PSICE 5 CENTS Oraculum First in Again: Increased Attendance despite Muddy Track At Washington OIIACULM FIRST IN AGAIN ' f INCREASED ATTENDANCE DESPITE MUDDY TRACK AT WASHINGTON. s 1 1 D'Arkle, at Long Odds, Springs a Surprise Trash a Smart Filly in Mud i Incognito Wins. J i 'Washington, I). C, Xovember 22. One of the largest crowds of the mooting attended the races ( today, notwithstanding the continued had weather, which was cloudy and showery all afternoon. 1 They were soon put in good humor when Oraculuni i won the first race at an astonishingly good price, ; as it was figured that the Odoni horse had nothing to heat. The hotting race-goers seem to he getting on to angles of the racing here in muddy going i and two favorites and three heavily backed second choices were returned winners. Oraculuni won the first race eased up after being reserved behind Right and True to the stretch, i where .McDaniol brought him up into a safe lead which he maintained to the end. night and True l led in the early running and was easily second best. Ola neiis was the only other starter to receive any support in the speculation, but ran poorly and was handily beaten for third place by Workman. Trash came bnek from her winning race Wednesday with seventeen pounds off. The discerning public took its cue from that and had the advantage of the receding price, while the form players were installing Rappahannock as the 2 to 1 favorite. Trash. i:casiy left at the start, went around her opponents and, co ining fast in- the stretch, finally secured the load and increased her advantage as the race prr -grossed, winning in a cantor. Fancy Bird, in a resolute finish, outstayed the fast tiring favorite for second place. King Thistle showed marked improvement over his last race and finished a fast going fourth. Ostrich, which had raced two days in succession, declined to make it three by being withdrawn in the third race. Lane Alien was most fancied, opening at 1 to 2 and closing at 2 to 5, but again demonstrated his inability to run in the mud here. D'Arkle, the outsider in the betting, stole up on L. Smith, on Weirdsouie, right at the end and won by a length. Woinisome, but for this piece of carelessness, would have won. Oxford was a contender to the last furlong and then tired. The race should improve him. Russell T., from the Kelso Stable, was made an odds-on favorite in the fourth race, as much because Odom trained him as anything else, but he probably was best before the race anyway. Xotter quickly took his mount to the front and won all the way. Kcmpton ran in second place throughout, but could never reach the winner, although vigorously ridden by Walsh. The crowd thought it had the right combination in Xotter and Dixie Himmel to win the fifth race. The winner proved to be Incognito, which the sharpshooters had backed down from C to 3 to 1 at pot time. McDaniol took the Disguise colt to the front right after the start and proceeded to sprcadeagle his opponents. Miss Catcsby, in a game finish, outstayed the tiring favorite, which could not givo the weight and beat the first two. r.raggadocio met with interference at the start, hut closed up with a remarkable rush in the stretch. Henry, who had ridden two winners, fell with liis mount when he stumbled at the sixteenth post, but got up uninjured. El Dorado was considered a good thing in the ' last race and the crowd, excepting those who had backed Iligginhotham in his last race, took the favorite to win the race. Higginbotham, next to the rail, was first off and led all the way, closely followed by the favorite. Xotter took no chances, but set a fast pace to the end. El Dorado tired badly in the stretch, permitting Royal Lady to pass him. He finished third ten lengths in front of Hounding Elk. John Walters and Frank Moore, two clubhouse commissioners, backed D'Arkle all ovor the ring in small sums and are said to have won upward of $.-1,000 on the race. The ring was badly loser until the fifth race was run, where the defeat of El Dorado nearly made them even with the day. Xotter, McDaniel and Henry divided the card, each riding two winners. Tim Sullivan arrived last night and made his first appearance at the track today, decidedly to his pecuniary betterment, as it turned out. All in Readiness at City Park: Racing Begins Today over a Heavy Track with Good Horses In Evidence ' f s 1 1 i J i ( 1 i ; i i l ALL IN READINESS AT CITY PARK. Racing Begins Today Over a Heavy Track with Good Horses in Evidence. New Orleans, La., Xovemher 22. The racing season for 1907-S will open tomorrow under conditions far from favorable. The tightness of the money market, the muddy condition of the track and the absence of many big speculators will rob the opening of much eclat. There is no question hut that matters will improve as the meeting progresses, but for the first few weeks the managements look for a light attendance. The continual grind at the half-mile merry-go-round all summer has not improved matters locally, although the success of racing in the Crescent City depends to a great extent upon the patronage which comes from the regulars who put in the winter months here. As yet many of them have yet to put in an npiearanee, but with the close of the Donning mooting, they will probably turn up. The track at City Park is deep and holding, owing principally to a deep covering of black loam which was placed on it last summer. A continual downpour of rain for the past four or five days lias not helped to improve matters and it will take a pretty solid horse to run freely in the going. Already predictions are being made for a rainy winter. Last season hut little rain fell and horsemen who brought mud runners here had hut few opportunities to race. their horses. It appears as if there will be a shift this winter in their favor. If present indications count for anything the fair grounds people will have the best track this-winter. Hilly Myers has given the constructio:: of the new track considerable study, and particular attention was paid to the selection of the soli used. At City I'ark a force of men lias been busy for the past week putting the plant in shape. .Many of the little details incidental to the opening of a race meeting were completed today and everything will lie in readiness. The announcement that clearing house certificates will be accepted by the bookmakers will bolster the hotting to some extent. Indications tonight are that not more than twenty-five layers will operate during the early period of racing. Among the recent arrivals of bookmakers are Fred Adler and Sam Most. Herman Brandt got in from New York with a division of Barney Schreiber's horses. Jack Atkin is in the string. Miss Sain, which .T. W. Gorman purchased for 5,000 during the Latonia meeting and shipped to Aqueduct,, arrived yesterday in very bad condition, having contracted a high fever on the way. Jockey Lee is working hard to keep down at a light riding weight. His services will not he in great demand, as there are any number of lightweight riders attached to the principal stables. The apprentice rule allowing live pounds will he general. All the owners engaging an apprentice-will he entitled to the allowance regardless oi whether the youngster is under their contract or attached to some other stable. Jockey Xicol denies the story that he is to retire from the saddle next year. His contract with Fred Cook expires December 14, but this does not mean that his connection with the Cook stable will be severed for all time. The probability is that his signature will be ailixed to a new contract for the same owner. While here, NIcol will mostly ride free lance. William Shelley, who will act as presiding judge until Clarence McDowell arrives from Benning, got in last night from Louisville. On the same train came a number of race followers. Tommy McGee, business agent for Edward Corri-gan, got in yesterday with the advance guard of his employer's extensive string that he will campaign this winter. Mr. Corrigan is expected to arrive here tonight. Santa Anita Opening Postponed SANTA ANITA OPENING POSTPONED. Los Angeles, Cal., Xovemher 22. The opening of the new race track at Santa Anita, "Lucky" P.aldwin's ranch, scheduled for Thanksgiving day, lias been postponed until Saturday, December 7. The directors today, Including George Hose, reviewed the course, and, after going over the ground carefully, decided that at least two weeks more would be necessary to get things into running Bliape. The top dressing has not yet been laid on the course, and waterpipes will have to lie run clear around the track. Moreover, the grandstand, while almost finished, is not quite ready for public occupancy. These and other minor details preclude the possibility of a Thanksgiving day start. Mr. Rose said tonight that he took this action in consideration of the public, but says things will surely he In splendid condition by December' 7. No New Race Tracks at Present: Suggestion That the Yonkers Track May Open and Close New York Racing NO NEW RACE TRACKS AT PRESENT. Suggestion that the Yonkers Track May Open and Close New York Racing. A Xew York newspaper says concerning the recent decision in the case of Butler against the Xew York State Racing Commission: "It is generally understood, however, that the decision of the Court of Appeals does not mean that new tracks can be built in this state without the official sanction of the Racing Commission. The Yonkers track was an established organization with a plant that was built before the law was amended limiting the number of tracks in the state to those already in existence." There is little in the text of the decision to sustain this view of the matter, although it in a way covers the only immediate result. But if at any time an association is formed, sufficient land secured and all the usual tracks, building and equipment of a race track brought to completion and readiness for racing, application for a license to carry on a race mooting must be followed by its issuance. But no one is likely to rush in haste to incur the great expense attending such an enterprise. Xew tracks there probably will bo in the vicinity of Xew York, but not immediately by any moans. As to another matter discussed the same newspaper says: "Friends of Mr. Butler said that if there should he any attempt to take away the dates for an August meeting at Yonkers, there might be trouble, as it was clearly demonstrated last summer that 'le metropolitan racing public, unable to go to Saratoga, desired a session witli the horses on a local track. The Yonkers meeting, under severe handicap, was liberally patronized and about 90,000 in profits was cleared up. "If m attempt is made to keep the month of August clear for Saratoga it is said that the Jockey Club will Offer to Mr. Butler spring and fall dates, about twenty in all, the plan being to have the Yonkers track open and close the metropolitan racing campaign instead of Aqueduct. In that case all of the other racing associations would have to surrender enough dates to make such an arrangement possible." The Burlew & O'Neill Stable THE BURLEW & O'NEILL STABLE. Xcw Orleans, La., Xovemher 22. Burlew & O'Xeill, who led the winning owners here last winter, are represented this season by the strongest stable that has been raced in Xew Orleans since the Durnell-Herz combination campaigned Mc-Chesney, Lucion Appleby, Rolling Doer and other high-class horses several years ago. The Burlew & O'Xeill string numbers twenty-four and includes the sensational two-year-old Chapultepcc, the half-brother to De Mund. It is the intention of the firm to dispose of all the horses they brought here with the exception of Chapultepcc, Bclmere and two others. Gemmell Continues His Victorious Career True Wing and Tavora Take Races Miller Fails to Shine. Oakland, Cal., Xovember 22. Rapid Water, which has not shown winning form since the Brighton July meeting, captured today's stake feature, the San Lorenzo Handicap at Oakland in the track record time of l:0Si for the Futurity course. S. C. Hildreth's uncertain Rapallo horse started a hot favorite at G to f, and under Walter Miller's skillful riding accomplished the task of defeating the quintette of fast sprinters opposed to him in a manner which removed all doubts as to his present superlative form. All Ablaze was the only outsider to break the monotony of winning first and second choices during the afternoon by scoring in the third race, a selling affair at one utile and fifty yards. W. Knapp started the procession with a brilliantly earned victory on Harvel at 2 to 1 in the opening race for two-year-olds. Walter Miller finished in the ruck in this race on an ordinary plug named Warden Yell, and then successively failed on Prejuicio and Sahara, the last named, a favorite, in the next two, won by the crack sprinter Gemmell, at 11 to 10, and All Ablaze at 30 to 1. The champion jockey, against whoso mounts short prices are laid and taken, made amends by leading his rivals in the feature race, then could do no better than second on Serenity in the fifth, won by Tavora at C to and finished unplaced on Roalta, the favorite, in the last, won by the heavily backed second choice. True Wing. Knapp, in the meantime, had retired for the afternoon after running fourth with his second mount, Fisher Boy, in the third race. There is a steady improvement in the class of horses engaged daily witli resultant increase in patronage. The inclosnre was filled to overflowing today. Twenty-nine bookmakers occupied positions in the ring and they all did a big business. Tavora was bid up from G0O to 1,300 and retained by her owner. C. T. Ilenshall began the boosting and offered 700. The owner said 1,000 and then De Armau took a hand in the game and hid 1.300. Mack, who bought the fleet Woodlands bred filly in with the customary 5 advance, wanted to start something immediately afterwards, but was restrained by the timely arrival of an officer. George Rose wired an official announcement to the local horsemen that the opening day of the new race track at Arcadia had been postponed until December 7. It is rumored that It. F. Carman has engaged sixty stalls, inclnding a kitchen at Arcadia. Also that V. Z. De Arman, E. Peters, Stuart Polk, Jack Kcene (with twelve), II. I. Wilson, R. II. Harris and J. Touhcy will shortly ship to Los Angeles. The last named owner has released jockey McRride and threatens to sell out his useful string and retire from the turf. Fleming is announced as a sure starter in the Santa Anita opening stake race. Walter Miller and his mother will make Oakland their home thiswinter. Jake Becklcy will swing the whip for starter Holtman this winter. Treasure Seeker has spread a foot. II. G. Bed-well's Salable broke down so badly in his last race that he will be fired and shelved for the winter. The Sobra Vista Stable has secured second call on the services of jockey Reggie Davis. Jockey Carroll, who fell from Mitre the other day, is on the road to recovery. Good Jockeys at New Orleans: Nicol, R. McDaniel and Mountain Among Those to Ride at the Crescent City GOOD JOCKEYS AT NEW ORLEANS. Nicol, R. McDaniel and Mountain Among Those to Ride at the Crescent City. Xew Orleans, La., November 22. More than fifty riders are now assembled at the Crescent City and in all probability before the meeting is far advanced, this number will be greatly enlarged. Among those already on the ground are some of the best pigskin artists. As they are attached to some of the most prominent stables that will participate in the racing here, they should lie kept busy and return north with good records. The interest of horsemen hereabouts just now is centered in the eighth annual Kentucky sale of thoroughbred stallions, mares and weanlings and horses, in training, which is to open Monday next under the auspices of the Fasig-Tipton Company. A few less than 900 horses have been catalogued. These come from about seventy-five breeders and owners. Under normal conditions in the world of finance the man who would predict low prices for such horses as are those to bS offered, would be laughed out of the community, but with money as tight as it Is at present, it is a toss-up whether or not the sale will give satisfaction to the consignors. The question most frequently asked among local horsemen is: "Where are the buyers eoming from?" Xo one has ventured to designate localities, but the more hopeful say with Colonel Milton Young, who is keen of observation and rich in experience: "I have never known it to fail that when people get it into their heads that other people have no money and that a bargain is to be had in the way of a horse, the sale will pan out better than everybody and anybody expected. I think this sale is going to be a success." Tourenne Ready to Race TOURENNE READY TO RACE. Trainer Edwin Whyte says he has Tourenne now about as good as he was before the running of the Oceanview Handicap at Gravesend last September. In that race he was badly injured by being crowded into the fence by Monfort, and has carried a running sore on his left hind leg ever since. It was opened last week and a piece of splintered bone taken out, and it has since healed. The colt will probably fill" his engagements in the Washington Club and Dixie Stakes. Gretna Green at Washington GRETNA GREEN AT WASHINGTON. James R. Keene's nomination to the Dixie Stakes, Gretna Green, lias arrived at Washington and the Ben Brush gelding is receiving his early preparation for the race at the hands of trainer T. J. Healey. James Rowe will leave Xew York Sunday for Washington to further prepare Gretna Green for the big race o Wednesday. Page 2 DAILY RACINE FORM PUBLISHED DAILY EXCEPT MONDAY. When Montgomery was defeated by Jack Nunnally In the Opening Handicap at Oakland a good many observers blamed Sandy, his rider, for the unexpected result, but not all. On this point the Chronicle said: "About the only person among those heard to express an opinion who did not lay the blame for Montgomery's defeat at Sandy's door was Herman Radtke, who was originally scheduled to ride the horse. Whether from professional courtesy or what not, Radtke said he did not think Sandy's ride was a bad one, but he also said Montgomery will loaf if not held together. . 'I rode Montgomery three times in the east and won with him each time,' said the crack jockey. 'The first time I rode him I knew nothing about him and 1 was told not to use the whip. He broke slowly, just as he did yesterday, and 1 hand rode him for all I was worth for more than a quarter of a mile, but he kept dropping hack all the time. Then 1 gave him a few cuts with the whip and he closed a big gap in the next furlong and finally got up and won going away. The next 'time I did not let him drop out of it the first part, but whipped him into second place early and kept Uiui there to the last eighth and then sent him to the front. The last time I rode him he had an inside position with good horses, and to keep from being cut off and knocked out of .tho race in its beginning, I went away from the post whipping, took the track and never did put up my whip. So the notion that Montgomery won't race in front, but wants to come from behind, is wrong. He can run the first quarter of a mile under pressure In 23, and there never was a gamer horse. What he docs want is to loaf that's all there is to his liking to come from behind.' " Telegraphic Form TELEGRAPHIC FORM. The horses which seem best in Saturday's races arc: Denning Washington, D. American Broodmares in England: An Expert View of Their Value and Their Success When Properly Mated AMERICAN BROODMARES IN ENGLAND. An Expert View of Their Value and Their v Success When Properly Mated. "When the statistics have to bo made up at the end of the current .season It will be found that American broodmares have played ;m Important part in the history of Its racing, and. further, it will be seen for the most part they trace back to English blood," says Vigilant In the London Sportsman. "Iihoda B., the property of Mr. Richard Crokcr, will stand out conspicuously as the dam of Orby, the winner of the Derby, and of the smart filly, Rhodora, which surprised every one hut her trainer, Dr. McCabe, by the ease with which she ran away from her opponents in the Dewhurst Plate after having but a fortnight before been to all Intents and purposes tailed off behind Lesbia in the Middle Park Plate. Such inconsistencies in form have become all too common since the introduction of the present Impossible system of starting horses from a standstill, for whereas they may get off all right one day, they arc as likely as not to he left the next, and it is only on rare occasions that we see a perfect start such as was that effected by Mr. Willoughby for the Cambridgeshire. Orby and Rhodora are of purely English breeding on the sire's side, tho one being by Orme and the other by St. Frusquin; but Rhoda B. is more American, being by Hanover out of Margerine, by Algerinc out of Sweet Songstress, a daughter of Doncaster and Melodious. Whether Mr. Croker's anticipation that Orby will stand training again next year will be realized remains to bo seen, but everyone who admires a good horse will sincerely hope so. As regards Rhodora, which shows all the beautiful quality of her sire, and is really a grand specimen of the thoroughbred mare, there should be a great career in front of her, for though her performances have varied between good and moderate, her last was irreproachable, dimmed only by the close proximity of Little Goose, which finished within three lengths of her. Between them was his' majesty's fine colt, Perrier, a colt of great promise by Persimmon out of Amphora, which was making his first appearance in public, but is yet so backward and unfurnished that it was surprising to see the stoutness with which he ran on and finished second. All things considered, it was a highly meritorious debut, and, all continuing well with him through the long winter recess, Perrier should develop into a first-class horse next year, good enough, perhaps, to follow In the successful footsteps of his 'father,' Persimmon, and his 'uncle,' Diamond Jubilee. The colts of the season are certainly not top-sawyers, unless exception be made in favor of Prospector, which is not bred to 'go on,' being by Pioneer, added to which a certain amount of doubt must attach to him until it is known whether or not his serious illness has left him affected by any constitutional weakness, as has so often been the case in similar circumstances. "To return to American mares, it was a remarkable day in December seven years ago when at Newmarket the late Lord William Beresford disposed of Jiffy II., Chinook, Sibola, Myakka, Slloah and Lutetla. The first-named daughter of that sensational Cambridgeshire winner, The Sailor Prince, out of Joy, by Duke of Montrose, took the fancy of Mr. Leonard Brassey at $4,050, but her several alliances with Cyllene, Matchmaker and Bay Ronald were for the most part failures, and she was in foal to the last-named when, twelve months ago, she was sold for $3,000 to S'ignor Tesio, and left this country for service in Italy. Siloah, by Pontiac out of Saluda, by Mortemer out of Perfection, by Leamington; was sold to Mr. J. Musker for $1,130, but she did not bring any new fame to the Westerham Hill Stud, and, having been covered by Orion, was in 190-1 sold for the modest sum of a 'pony' to Mr. Van do Water, and sent to France. Myakka, by Sensation, out of Magnetic, by 111 Used, out of Magnetism, which was sold to Sir Daniel Cooper for ?2,000, produced Hyacinth to Orme in 1903, and Seminole to Flotsam in 1900, subsequent to a dead foal by Merman In her previous season, so that she cannot be described as a stud success, any more than the two mares above referred to. "Major Eustace Loder was more fortunate in his dealings at the same sale, for he bought Chinook for $3,250, Sibola for $9,750, and Lutetia for 57,730, and they were forthwith sent to his famous stud in Ireland. Chinook produced first La BIse to Laveno, then Chewink to Gallinule, and anon Weathercock to the same sire. Next a brown filly by Laveno, but she was sold as a yearling last summer to Sir Ernest CasscI for $3,750, and, although beaten in her only two essays this year, may be safely relied on to recover the purchase money with compound interest, being as yet backward and capable of much improvement from two to three years old. Chinook's yearling is a filly by Gallinule. Next we come to Sibola, by The S'allor Prince, her dam, Saluda, by Mortemer. Foaled in 1S9C, she was tho victim of cruel luck when beaten by Musa in the Oaks, after having run away with the One Thousand Guineas, and for once in a way the great little Sloan did not shine. At the stud her first mate was Count Schomberg, by which she produced Gripenburg, which, however, is a had horse, and, having as a two-year-old run seven times unsuccessfully for Major Loder, was passed to Colonel R. Chaloner Knox, for whom he has won two paltry races in sixteen attempts, all in Ireland. Sibola's next produce was Baltinglass, which in spite of his Cesarewitch failure, was second for the St. Leger and has won since. Moreover, he is thought to bo well above average class by his trainer, and much is expected of him next year. Her filly by Gallinule, which followed, is dead, but I believe she has a good-looking yearling colt by the same sire called Morillon. Lutetia, which could use her feet to a merry tune during her active service on the turf, is now nine years old, and is by Pontiac, her dam, Luella B., by Onondaga out of Kelp, by Strachino, out of Kelpie, by Bonnie Scotland. Her first foal, Gay Paris, by Laveno, is a commoner, though a winner, and his own sister, Parisicnne, is still a maiden. But with the service changed to Gallinule came French Partridge, a dual winner at Newmarket, and, unless my reckoning is far wide of the mark, a very smart filly. She is a 'big 'un,' capable of more than ordinary improvement with time, and when she has fined down will not unlikely hold her own against all the so-called champions of her age and sex, for the way in which she cut down her opponents first in the Criterion Stakes and then in the Moulton Stakes, was a treat to witness. Last year Lutetia was unfortunately barren to Wildfowler, but there may yet be great stud fame in store for her." The Second Ten American Sires: Ornament at the Head with Plaudit And Sir Dixon Close Up THE SECOND- TEN AMERICAN SIRES. Ornament at the Head with Plaudit and Sir Dixon Close Up. Following the ten leading sires of this country Is another group of ten next in the list through the earnings of their progeny, of which up to and including last Monday, November IS, Ornament was the leader, closely followed by Plaudit and Sir Dixon. The devotion of R. T. Wilson, Jr., to the get of Ornament has Its reward, as is illustrated by the fact that of Ornament's total of $0S,194, Mr. Wilson - won $37,475 through the fleotness of Monfort, Gallavant, Beaucoup, Adoration, Orcagna,- Sanguine, Aletheuo, Alauda and Thermidor Ornament has sired no real star as yet, but was a grand race horse, is yet young in stud service and is liable to send a top-notcher to the races any year. The young stallion Plaudit, and the old one, Sir Dixon, are so close together that the winning of an ordinary purse is sufficient to switch their positions. Largely Plaudit owes his prominence to the two-year-olds King James and Lady Winifred, S'ir Dixon's main contributors being Yankee Girl and Running Water, full sisters and a credit to any sire. Sir Dixon led the sire list In 1901, but is not likely to do so again. But his fame is secure as a great race horse and a great sire. The lack of a good stake winning two-year-old told against him this year. The imported begetter of hardy, useful platers, Woolsthorpe, is close up to Plaudit and Sir Dixon, with Grapple as his chief money winner, and the promising two-year-old Falcada his best of that age. Pcssara is fifteenth in the list, through his sturdy son, Montgomery, and old Kingston, like Sir Dixon, once a leader in the list, comes next witli a long list of useful performers and no single money winner of note. As was the case last year, Bclvidero is in the list solely through the prowess of Salvi-derc and had this good horse not been unfortunate, would have. been higher up than seventeeth. Nasturtium gives promise as a sire and is next to Belvidcre through the winnings of the good two-year-olds Stamina and Bar None. Royal Flush III. has done exceedingly well since he was brought to this, country and sent two good ones to the races this year in Firestone and Royal Vane. Last in the list is the Futurity winner, Yankee, which, as a son of Hanover and Reckon should, may he-come one of the foremost of American sires. The second ten sires and the earnings of their representatives to the date named, are as follows: Ornament, ch. h, 13, by Order Victorine. Horse. A. Sts. 1st; 2d. 3d. Unp. Won. True AVing broke slowly and ran around 011 the outside, rapidly improved her position and made good decisively in the stretch. May L. N. helped force the pace for six furlongs and finished a game second, showing conspicuous improvement. Sidney F., a slow beginner and shuffled to the rear, trailed seeminglv a hopeless last for the first half, but closed an immense gap and finished with a sensational closing r-print. Rather Royal, after forward early pursuit of the pacemakers, drew out at the half, hut tired iii the last quarter. Itoalta beat the barrier aDd was reserved In the middle running, but failed to make any impression in the stretch and ran a remarkably poor nice.
