SUCCUMBS TO COLTNESS AFTER WINNING FIVE RACES STRAIGHT. Glamor Spoils a Coup Hurdle Horses Show Lack of Training Rebel Queen Springs a Surprise. New Origans?, La., December 24. The hurdle race at a mile and a quarter over live jumps was Intended as the day's feature, hut resulted in a huge failure, six of the eleven starters coming to grief at some stage of the race. The race was won by Itank Holiday, an extreme outsider in the betting. Hob Murphy, also at a long price, taking second place from Aules. Tins trio of placed horses were neglected in favor of Magic and Coal Mack Lady. Magic showed poor form as si hurdler and came to grief at the second obstacle. Lindale and Itaca-tiara, at the same time becoming entagled, fell heavily. At the next fence, Peter Becker and Fete Vinegar fell, and Modredlaw unseated his rider. The entire Held showed lack of training at hurdling and put up a bal contest. Outsiders managed to get away with the majority of the purses, much to the regret of the large crowd in attendance. The fourth race, at one mile, went to Coltness. Dainty r.ello, which linished second, made a sparkling effort to down the Watkins candidate, but was not good enough. This was Dainty Belle's first defeat in six starts. That it takes more than an ordinary rider at times to consummate successfully well intended coups, was demonstrated in the closing race when Deni-gre suffered defeat by the narrowest possible margin. Denigre had been primed for a "killing" and much money was bet on him in various places throughout the country. That iie lost was solely thejfault .of O. Baker, his rider, who became rattled and threw away the race. Glamor was thoroughly beaten in the 1.1st furlong, but managed to come again under hard nrgiug and got up iV the last ' stride-to win- out. Jockeys Kotter and Skirvin enlivened matters considerably in the third race by engaging in a whip duel. Notter slashed away at Skirvin several times, lint did no serious damage; The judges, however, assessed him a fine of $50. Skirvin tried to renew the battle after dismounting and was fined $10. ltebel Queen showed a sudden return to good form and beat Ketchemike in the third race. Rustle was best, but a poor send-off caused her to finish no better than third. The Cella following made amends for Rustle's defeat when Clara Huron won the fifth race in the last few strides of a spirited drive with Alegra. The latter was smartly supported by the knowing ones and would have won in better hands than Ilufnagel. T. Polk is negotiating for the purchase of Potheen. Polk is desirous of obtaining the horse for stud duty at his ranch near San Antonio, Texas. .Tockey .T. Carter, who rode Florentine in the opening race, was suspended for six days by starter Cassidy for disobedience at the post. The poor race Marbles ran last Saturday, when she failed to finish among the placed horses, when in with an ordinary band'., was explained today by the announcement that she has been ailing ever since and at times her fever has reached 105. Veterinarian Keogh, who has been looking after her, Js of the opinion that she will pull through, but will be unfit for racing purposes for some time. The money stringency is still apparent, and many of the layers who have booked big losings recently are worrying about how to replenish their working capital. Their money is slill in banks and they find it difficult to draw on it at short notice. Unless there is a noticeable change in their favor within ?he next few days, some of the most prominent will Jiave to take a forced vacation. "Jimmy" M' Laughlin's Youngsters "JIMMY" M'LAUGHLIN'S YOUNGSTERS. .Tamos McLaughlin has five yearlings in training at Sheepshcad Bay for next season. They are as lollows: A bay colt, standing fully sixteen hands high, by Woolstho'rpe Lady Prim. Is very stoutly built and one of the best looking colts around any of the tracks.- A brown colt by Knight of the Thistle. Has good size and length and on his looks should race Jo ids good breeding. A gray filly by Golden Maxim Gray Agnes, the 1m of Gossoon, is rugged, but quite well put together and has shown McLaughlin some speed. The bay filly by Kinlev Mack Lady Lindsey, recalls her dam very much. She is built on strong lines for a filly and stands close to sixteen hands. Alwiut the tallest filly seen out this season. The snlall but well made filly by Hastings, whose rtam McLaughlin could not give, has worked the front stretch at Gravesend in close to 23 seconds. She fs speedy looking. McLaughlin never likes to sell a horse which has won well for him, but it was surprising to find that ihc still has old First Whip, by Duke of Montrose, out of Theora. First Whip Is now ten years old nd has been standing at a farm on Long Island. JIcLaughlin intends to sell him, as lie cannot place him anywhere at present. Oxford. He was always n better horse, of better conformation than Golden Maxim, although he was a "bit high from the firound last season and he is broadening and thiek-fiiing in an eminently satisfactory manner. .Tim Ga(fney weighs ail of 200 pounds more than he did at Gravesend in the fall and he should carry when In racing fettle next season at least 150 pounds more than he did last fall. Uncle Among Them Bookmakers Are Big Losers No Outlaws at Track. Los Angeles, Cal., December 24. That Sam Hil-dretli purposes to begin an active campaign here was made apparent today when two carloads of his horses arrived at Santa Anita Park. Among the number was his crack colt Uncle, which was worked live furlongs over the track in 1:0(5 after the first race. With the high-class horses he brought here and Dugan in the saddle, Ilildreth is almost'certaln to displace R. F. Carman as public favorite, and the keen rivalry that is. sure to take place between the two easterners should produce some high-class sport. Horsemen were notified here today that the entire stable of C. E. Durnell will be sold next Friday in the paddock at Oakland, the sale commencing at 11. -"0 o'clock. The public is giving the hooks no respite, following up its successful play of the last two days with another good afternoon. A number of the twenty-one pencilers doing business have been hit hard since the last cut-in and it is confidently expected that a few will fail to answer roll call tomorrow. Public form is being well conserved and the close students that follow it are doing well. The Jamestown incident is causing a ludicrous mix-up here, as a number of horses under the ban have never raced east of the Mississippi. The blame is put on Sheridan Clark, who was secretary of the Jamestown meeting. It is said he padded out his programs with the names of horses that were not on the ground. Holiday distractions had no effect on tiie attendance today, which was as large as usual. A record-breaking crowd is -expected tomorrow. Red Bill ran into the fence in the last race, slightly injuring himself. How Mr. Croker Lost a Jockey HOW MR. CROKER LOST A JOCKEY. Dublin, December 12. Mr. Croker has lost his 190S jeekey, F. Hunter. The boy did a bit of double dealing in signing the contract. Within the last ton days or so Hunter undoubtedly signed a very advanrageous one for himself. engaging to ride "first jockey" for Mr. Croker in 190S. When this covenant was entered into, by Mr. Croker he was unaware that Hunter hud tohl Sir Ernest Cochrane he would ride for him next year. The conversation with Sir Ernest Cochrane in which Hunter made the promise, took place on Phoenix Park race course in August last. No ratification of that conversation or agreement has been signed or registered. However, the moment Mr. Croker was convinced that Hunter had conveyed, although more than three months ago. and then only verbally, to Sir Ernest Cochrane that he was willing to ride for him next season, he wrote informing Sir Ernest that, in the circumstances, he had cancelled his agreement with Hunter. The rules of racing lay it dowji that "all agreements shall be registered." No agreement between Sir Ernest Cochrane and Hunter for next season had been registered. Thus Mr. Croker's action In this matter, so far as Sir Ernest Cochrane is concerned, was admirable. The Derby winner, Orby, is looking in rude health. He is a splendid specimen of a thoroughbred, ' and will make a good stallion. If all goes well with his half-sister, Rhodora. by St. Frus-quin,-during the winter, the Dewhurst Plate winner's prospects for the One Thousand Guineas and the Oaks look rosy. She Is a beautiful lilly, but has gone through a deal this season, both in England and Ireland. Few who saw the raqe will deny that she was unlucky to be beaten by White Eagle for the rich National Breeders' Produce Stakes at Sandown Park, and had she won, her sire, St. Frusquln, would have been well on top. Although White Eagle just won, the filly evidently took the steel out of Colonel Hall Walker's colt. Before the Middle Park Plate Rhodora had been couching, and when she dead-heated with Mr. Win. Dunne's crack Temeraire for the Londonderry Plate at Leopardstown in August, she had 1m?ou badly kicked at the post. Her easy victory in the Dewhurst Plato was full of merit. In fact, I am convinced that when at concert pitch, this fine daughter of St. Frusquiii and .Rhoda B. is a smasher. More unlikely things have happened than that hi the first and second for the Dewhurst Plate the winner of next year's Derby and Oaks were on view His Majesty's fine colt, Perrier, by Persimmon, out of Amphion, for the Derby and Mr. Croker's Rhodora, by St. Frusquln, the Oaks. Alabama, half-sister to Orby and Rhodora, is a charming, sizy chestnut, by Americas, out of Rhoda B. Mr. Croker has engaged her in the Derby, Oaks (1909), and other English races of note. A rare good mover, if Hhe cannot go It will be indeed a queer thing. Her own sister. Rhododendron, by Americus, out of Rhoda B.. was very smart, a good two-year-old winner, and unbeaten as a three-year-old. She is now in Mr. Croker's stud at Glencairn and will in the ensuing season be ' mated with Clonmell. I think everything that Rhoda B. (which Is now only twelve years old), has ever thrown is a winner. German Thoroughbred Reports GERMAN THOROUGHBRED REPORTS. "Deutscher Sport" deplores the fact, recorded in the German "Calendar," that out of 709 broodmares only 400 had foals in 1907, the remaining 30.1. nearly forty-two per cent., being without foal. Ard Patrick and Galtee More proved disappointing, the first named having only nineteen foals to his credit, while of his remaining fifteen mares, twelve were barren, one slipped foal and two others had foals which died. Galtee More has only eleven foals living, while seven mares were barren, six slipped foals and the foals of three others died. More satisfactory report of St. Maclou. which lias twenty-five living foals to his name and two which died, while only five of his mares were barren aud three slipped foal. French Betting Consideration FRENCH BETTING CONSIDERATION. The Comite Consultatif des Courses, which is, for practical and administrative purposes, a body like the English Jockey Club, intends to make an inquiry into the whole betting question In France. For this purpose a sub-commlttee was recently appointed, which met for the first time under the presidency of M. Cabaret, at the Ministry of Agriculture. Eleven different propositions were submitted for consideration and these have been referred to M. Edinond Blanc for his opinion thereon. The report of this sub-committee is. looked forward to with much interest by our sporting circles, as several important' changes in the present regulations are proposed. "Father Bill" Daly's Jockeys "FATHER BILL" DALY'S JOCKEYS. "Father Bill" Daly Is depressed over his recent poor success as an owner of race horses, though he scored a time or two late this year. "But," says the sage of Hartford. "I've been lucky over jockeys." In his day Daly has developed, such riders as James McLaughlin, the Lamleys, "Snapper" Garrison, Danny Maher. Winnie O'Connor, Tommy Burns and his younger brother, Guy Burns, now riding successfully at Arcadia. O'Connor and Maher, by the way, are cousins. Racing Dates of 1908 Discussed: Stewards of the Jockey Club Fail to Arrive at a Decision RACING DATES OF 1908 DISCUSSED. Stewards of the Jockey Club Fail to Arrive at a Decision. New York. December 24. The stewards of the Jockey Club held a meeting at the Windsor Arcade this afternoon aud the date question was discussed at length. It was a stormy meeting and by no means harmonious. Present were August Belmont, chairman, and Messrs. Keene. Knapp, Sturgis and Miller. Of the two absent stewards, F. R. Hitchcock is in Tennessee at II. B. Duryea's hunting place, nickory Valley, and J. H. Bradford tele-' pliohed lie was not well enough to appear. Phil J. Dwyer, though not a Jockey Club steward, was called into the meeting. This gathering of the stewards followed the recent discussion of dates by the several racing associations, and, from what could be learned, the schedules proposed at that time were the subject of discussion today. August Belmont hurried away alont after the meeting had adjourned. Andrew Miller replied to a question that the dates had been discussed but nothing had been decided. He said another meeting would be held January 3. Nothing else was given out. It is plain that when it comes to the actual cutting off of days from their previous date schedule none of the associations is anxious to give up, but the impression prevails Empire City will race in August and that Sheepsuead Bay may have to lose a few of its valuable early fall dates. W. K. Vanderbllt has his eye on the Epsom Derby for 190S, and, according to "a horseman recently returned from Franco, has a royal chance to win with a hay colt called Sea Sick II., by Elf Saf-Saf. This colt was nominated by M, Gaston Dreyfus, and is highly thought of. He is also in the Grand Prix. How Gallinule Went to Ireland HOW GALLHMULE WENT TO IRELAND. Vigilant, the eminent racing critic of the London Sportsman, says of Gallinule, his racing, sale and subsequent history: "After a race equally as close and not less interesting than that, of four years ago, Gallinule may he said to have beaten St. Frusquln by a head for pride or place in the list of winning sires, that is so far as regards English racing alone. Foaled in 1SS4, he is a grandly bred horse, framed In beautiful mold, chestnut in color, with two white hind logs and a blaze face. He was bred by Mr, J. C. Hill, by Isouomy out of Moorhen, a singularly handsome mare by Hermit, who did her best racing work over hurdles. As a yearling Gallinule was sold' at the summer " sales- at Newmarket for 3,600 to "Mr. Ev H. Wood, and ran but once in that gentleman's colors before he was passed on to the late Lord Ailesbury, then Lord Savernake, for whom he won three 6f seven two-year-old engagements. In his next season he wore silk on three occasions only, the third being at York, when placed second to Panzerschiff. That ended his career in the service of Lord Ailesbury, for with the arrival of the next race came trouble, as although Everitt won the Harewood Plate after a dead heat witii Whittington, his jockey was called on by the stewards of the meeting to explain his manner of riding in the first heat. Having heard his evidence, as also that of the owner and trainer, they came to the conclusion that either an attempt had been made to win by an unjustifiably and dangerously short distance, or that Everitt had been wilfully stopped. In the circumstances the case was referred to the superior tribunal of the stewards of the Jockey Club, and as the result of a long inquiry, which commenced at Doncaster and concluded at the Newmarket First October meeting, it was proved to their satisfaction that the owner, in the presence of his trainer, gave orders to his jockey not to win, but that finding himself in a prominent position towards the finish the latter hesitated to carry out his orders, the result being' a dead heat. Lord Ailesbury and his trainer were warned off the turf, and the jockey was severely reprimanded and cautioned. At the second October meeting the horses were sold, and the late Mr. -Abiugton was tempted to pay ?2G.C00 for Galliuule, who unfortunately had a had habit of breaking blood vessels, and although he ran ten times during the two seasons following, never once did he win for his new owner. "Indeed, the only rctnrn he ever made for the big outlay was when he was privately sold for $5,000. and when informed of the transaction Mr. Abington's characteristic remark was, 'Good gra cious, who is the 'mug'? I hope you liave got the money.' Captain Greer was the buyer, but I do not imagine that, any one will accuse him of being a 'mug,' for few such bargains have ever been made. The horse ran no more, but was sent forthwith to the stud in Ireland, and, wonderful to relate, his progeny have since won collectively close on to a- million dollars." Lord Stanley on English Starting LORD STANLEY ON ENGLISH STARTING The feature in the GImcrack Club Dinner in York December 3, when Mr. W. Hall Walker was the guest of honor for the third year in succession, was Lord Stanley's speech, no very truly said the turf is much purer and in a more satisfactory state than lots of foolish people are inclined to make out and also mentioned that next year it is proposed to start a race course inspector. This should be an excellent thing, as certainly the condition of many race courses, except possibly just in the neighborhood of the stands, requires careful overhauling. In his speech Lord Stanley said that there was a subject which was much debated in one of the leading papers (The Sporting Life), and that was the question of the standing start. It was brought forward at the Jockey Club meeting in June, and the Jockey Club, was absolutely unanimous about it. He thought that the heaven upon earth which would come upon the sporting world if they had a walking up start was an absolute delusion. It would only mean that they would have a repetition of those false starts, which, owing to the introduction of the gate, were, he believed, gone forever. Statistics tended to prove that after all the number of horses that wore left at the post was not an extraordinary proportion of the sum total. Under "left" were often included horses that got badly away and he was certain that under any circumstances with a walking up or a standing start It would have been the same thing. During the year horses that got away badly numbered 307, left at the post 130, and of the latter thirty-nine whipped ronnd at the post and twelve took nc part in the race through bolting or throwing the rider. Thus in the year there were 443 horses that got away badly or were left at the post. The number of horses that ran during the year was 15.GCC and therefore there were rather less than three per cent, which did not get away. If they took into account some Of the vory big nurseries at the end of the year and some of the very big handieans there were, ho did not think they could say that the standing start had been an absolute failure. Alluding to the proposal for a circular course at Newmarket, Lord S'tapley1 said he most strongly objected to it. They had at Newmarket the finest course In the world. By the powers which they had of finishing at different winning posts they could give every possible test for speed and stamina, and as long as he had anything to do with It there would be no change of any sort or kind with regard to the racing, so far as distances and winning posts were concerned, at Newmarket. Grace G. an Easy Winner: Defeats Fast Opponents in the Chief Race at Oakland GRACE G. AN EASY WINNER. DEFEATS FAST OPPONENTS IN THE CHIEF RACE AT OAKLAND. - Jennings to Take His Horses to Santa Anita at Once Schreiber at Oakland Jockey Miller Unlucky. Oakland, Cal.. December 24. Edward Soule's fleet chestnut three-year-old filly, Grace G., by Albert Mountain Madge, won today's feature, the AValnut Creek Handicap, at six furlongs, with supreme ease from a small but select band of opponents, including the Woodlands-bred celebrity. De.utschland. and three others. Grace G. carried a fortune in wagers collectively for the public, and Individually for her sportsmanlike owner, and never gave her backers a moment's uneasiness during the actual running. An attractive race over a longer distance of ground, won by Judge Nelson in spreadeagle style, had preceded this which was marked bv a big runup of the winner, J. Schreiber boosting Bedwell's 'good three-year-old from $1,000 to $2,500 before he stopped. The owner bought him in for the customary advance. The remainder of the card was devoted chiefly to selling platers, the exception being the race won by .Marian Casey, which, under Du-gan's skillful riding, ran the best race of her career. John II. Sheehan, at prohibitive odds, evoked inuch criticism when he finished a distant third in the opening race. After that favorites held full swav and the speculatively inclined public waxed rich as the afternoon's racing progressed. W. B. Jennings, upon his return today from Los Angeles, decided to ship his entire stable to the Santa Anita track. Three carloads are scheduled to leave next Saturday. Walter Miller has been in total eclipse for the last two days. Barney Schreiber wired Secretary Percy W. Treat that he would be on hand and will commence booking at Oakland on Christmas day. There is ho truth 'In the report that Uncle Is in a bad way or suffering from a bruised foot. The $30,000 colt is physically in first-class shape and is doing all that is asked of him in the way of exercise. James E. Pierson today commenced suit against Charles White to secure the possession of three race horses. Happy Rice, Oronogo and Mabel Hollander. AH of the horses are now at the Oakland race track. Eddie Dugan has not departed for Los Angeles as yet and besides riding a winner, saw his elder brother almost succeed in doing the same thing. Ben Falk's Head Lasted Longest BEN FALK'S HEAD LASTED LONGEST. The gossip of the Oakland ring holds a story o the experience of Bookmaker Bennv Falk, which is interesting. Two weeks ago a soldier from tho Presidio offered him a $20 gold piece on Lone Wolf at 4 to 1. The bettor won his $S0 all right and won two other bets that afternoon. Next day the soldier beat five straight races, and the day following he made four out of five winning bets. For two days further he pressed his lucjc, winning with singular good fortune. Here is where the funnv thing of the affair comes in. The man of war did not entrust his speculation to any other bookmaker than Falk. Why? Falk has red hair and the soldier was one of those peculiar "bugs" you'll encounter on a race track with a penchant for gray horses" or red headed bookmakers. Something was in the hunch, all right, for in tho latter days of the soldier's success he was handing up St'oOO plays to the layer of auburn locks. Falk just kept taking the money and paying off, confident In the knowledge that the hunch fiend would soon come to his own. This Mr. Soldier finally did. for his last kick was an $S split across the boards to a choice in the Pacific-Union Handicap which did'nt win. At one time he had $5,200 of Falk's money. Celt Considered a Champion CELT CONSIDERED A CHAMPION. Now York, December 24. J'Celt will beat Colin and everything else in the Keene stable next year if he is asked to," was the glowing opinion of that two-year-old expressed by a good judge of horseflesh recently after a trip to Sheepshead Bay and a look over the string. That was strong talk for his hearers, but the Celt enthusiast couldn't be stopped In his wild praise of the chestnut son of Commando and Maid ofErin. 'He's the finest looking horse in the world and he hasn't been raced at all you might say as a two-year-old. Just wait till he starts and see a race horse. Playing Long-Distance Dreams PLAYING LONG-DISTANCE DREAMS. Edward Elliott, an English racing man In South Africa, cabled to England on the morning of the City and Suburban of 1904 to have $250 on No. G on the card for that race, which was won by Robert lo Diablo. It appears that the bet was the outcome of a dream, another South African , , maker navjnS dreamt that No. G won. and he had- $250 on with Mr. Elliott at starting price, subject to the latter's limit of 20 to 1, which left the layer with a fine profit, "Robert" starting at exactly double the odds to which he limited the successful dreamer. Winn Plans for Big Yonkers Stake WINN PLANS FOR BIG YONKERS STAKE Louisville, Ky., December 24. Matt Winn, the New Orleans and Empire .City racing manager, and James Butler, owner of the Empire City track, will meet here tomorrow and afterwards go south together. Butler is going to spend some time at Palm Beach. Fla., and Winn goes back to New-Orleans. They have some ambitious plans for the lonSrJacln?: oE 1008- Wlnne's idea- is to open a $2o.000 handicap at one and one-eighth or one and one-quarter miles, for three-year-olds and upwards, to rival the Brooklyn and Suburban Handicaps in importance. Business at the Racing Centers BUSINESS AT THE RACING CENTERS. Barney Weller, on his way from New Orleans to New- lork for the holidays, opines that the New-Orleans market is thirty or forty, per cent oft par so far this season. He and all operators expect It to Improve. Los Angeles also shows the financial pinch, wiille San Francisco is said by an authority of the highest grade to be twenty-five or thirty per cent better than last season Its banner-one The New Orleans fall-oft is directly attributed r to, tho change in the system of speculation, the "only excuse for which Is said to be the political turmoil In Louisiana. v Page 2 DAILY RACINE FORM PUBLISHED DAILY EXCEPT MONDAY. There Is an unconfirmed rumor that at the Benning meeting In March next, the moving start, for which there has 1k.'oh so much clamor, will be tried again and probably continued. Personally, I doubt the accuracy . of the report and, as the stewards of the Jockey Club are widely scattered at this moment, it is impossible to obtain confirmation of the story. Not Jong ago I spent the better part of an hour at the office of the Brighton Beach Racing Asso-ciafiou ' and then lnlked with Christopher .1. Fitzgerald, the president of that organization, who. for ten years, officiated as starter, the greater part of wnioh .time lie was at Now Orleans eacli Winter and In New York, under the Jockey Club. Tor eight months n yeaf. He gaive up the onerous poxltion of starter two years ago. lie Is an undeviating upholder of the standing etart anil asserted Hat to attempt to make moving. starts, would lead to all the good jockeys being suspended, for they would be on the move all the time trying to prejudge the starts and hence would be disciplined. This would not be a popular thing, for the race-going public like to bet on good jockeys and though they frequently denounce them lor bad or foul riding, they are given to realize that when it comes down to betting on a horse, much depends on the rider. When Notter and McDanicl left the recent Benning meeting before its close, they were missed greatly. Referring to the well-known fact that in England the standing start prevails and will be maintained by order of the stewards there, Mr. Fitzgerald asserted that the barriers in use on the other side are not up-to-date, inasmuch as smart jockeys can anticipate the movements of the starters because they use levers with which to release the barrier. "When Mr. Fitzgerald was starter lie had an electric button held clasped In his hand and that hand Vas behind his back. Thus no jockey knew the moment the start was to come and the consequence was that his starts were excellent. "I was not always up to my own standard of excellence," he said today. "I had great difficulties to overcome. I will say this for Mr. Bush, of New Orleans he stuck to me loyally at all times "and he resisted strong pressure the first year I was at New Orleans. They got up a round robin to replace me as starter because I punished the jockeys too freely they said. But Mr. Bush would not listen to them and the consequence was that the following year and eacli subsequent season, I had no trouble witli the jockeys." "Naturally, however, yon made enemies as starter?" was asked. "Nothing like as many as since I began .to act as steward," was the answer. "Two years ago word was conveyed to mo that a principal turfman was angry with me because of an investigation which was instituted into the ' running of a horse at Brighton. Threats were made that the stable would never again race at our track. I sent word back that such news was a great relief to me, for it would save me many anxious moments which would have been devoted to watching the horses in that particular stable." "Do you believe 'doping' is common?'' was asked. "I fear it is used more frequently than has been detected. It is difficult for some to prove it, but my ten years' experience as starter prompts me to assert that when a horse comes prancing up to you transformed from the meek, well-behaved racer which he has been up to that time, into a wild-eyed, frantic, crazy horse, it is reasonably sure that he has been artificially stimulated. I feel satisfied horses were doped last' summer In stables which had come under public suspicion, but which thus far have escaped official punishment Sooner or later the Jockey Club readies out and punishes malefactors, however, and if you should hear of certain trainers losing or not receiving their licenses, you can rest assured It Is probably for 'doping.' " Christopher J. Fitzgerald is a shining example of what rewards the turf may have for a shrewd man. The present writer as far back as 1SS9, was sending turf reports to various newspapers, amongst them the Philadelphia Times. The reports were filed at an office in Park Row and the operator who sent them over the wires, was Christopher Fitzgerald. He became turf reporter on the New York Sun, then clerk of the scales at some of the tracks under the old Board of Control, then patrol judge, next starter at New Orleans, thence a Jocky Club starter and now he is president of the Brighton Beach Racing Association at a salary of $10,000 a year. Out of his earnings as starter for ten years ho saved a handsome sum, invested it in a - boot and shoe manufactory in his native town of London. Canada and' takes life easily. As steward at Brighton Beacli and Montreal he was given to see and take prompt action and W. Knapp may yet rue that day he rode at Montreal in a race which brought down upon him discipline. J. 3 Burke. Illegal Stimulation of Horses: Preventive Measures Suggested to Abate the Practice of "Doping" ILLEGAL STIMULATION OF HORSES. Preventive Measures Suggested to Abate the - Practice of 'Doping." New Orleans,- December 23. Talk that has been" current in the west for the last year or so, of the appointment by the jockey clubs of a veterinary to serve as a sort of paddock "dope" judge, has been revived here. This "dope" problem lias been a serious one for a great many years, and one that the turf authorities have found exceedingly difficult to cope with. That some abnormally fretful and nervous horses' need moderate applications of stimulants to quiet them before going to the post is generally admitted. Frequently in the paddock, in the fear and dread of race contests, horses work themselves up into an almost uncontrollable state of nervousness. Oftentimes they break out and wash profusely. They betray every symptom of having been "doped," and from superficial observation, only one familiar with the peculiarities of such horses would be able, to attribute their condition to accurate causes. Horses of this temperament fret and worry themselves into such a state that they practically run their races while in the paddock awaiting the call to post, and as far as winning chances are concerned they might just as well have been left in their stables. It is not the moderate and consistent use of stimulants, where they are helpful, but the overdosing of horses with powerful drugs and the inconsistent employment of these artificial speed producers the "doping" in ami "doping." out process that is objectionable, norscs are run "warm" one day and "cold" the next, thus turning all theories of form topsy turvy and befuddling the public, the bookmakers and the officials alike. Many prominent owners there are in the west who never resort to stimulants under any circumstances. These men understand the art of thoroughly conditioning their horses and getting them in such good physical condition that they do not need" to be stimulated. The "dope" fiends, as a general thing, are found among the class of poor owners and incompetent trainers who either cannot afford to take the time, or have not the ability, to build up horses that have "gone off" and set them into racing fettle again. They tried the "dope" paddock judge down east last summer, and with satisfactory results in some instances, it Is claimed. The most noteworthy case, however, with which the official veterinary came in contact, occurred at the Benning fall meeting, and resulted in a $50,000 damage suit against the Washington Jockey Club, which was filed only two or three weeks ago. The instance referred to was when the horse, St. Joseph, belonging to Joe Marrone, ran a bad race at a long price in. the betting, this latter a circumstance which one would think should hardly have attracted much notice to him. The track veterinary alleged that St Joseph had been "doped." Another eminent "vet," employed by Marrone, asserted that St. Joseph Mad not been "doped," and it was on his suggestion that Marrone entered snit. Many plausible theories for controlling this "dope" evil have been advanced, and it Is doubtful if any plan could be devised that would not meet witii more or less strong objections. For example, an official "dope" judge might play favorites. He might injure innocent parties while neglecting to ferret out really notorious culprits. Again he might get jockey clubs into all sorts of le.gal tangles. Possibly the hurtful and highly unsatisfactory results of "doping" practices might be partially obviated, at all cvents, in the remodeling by the turf governing bodies of the existing rules against "doping," so that permission would have to be obtained from the judges to stimulate a horse, that such stimulant would have to be administered by a veterinary surgeon employed by the race track, and that announcement that such stimulant had been given would have to be displayed on the race track bulletin board. It would seem that this might place the matter under official control, and then If extreme penalties, say ruling off, were imposed against surreptitious "doping," It would appear to be probable that owners might fall into line and prefer to do their "doping" under official sanction rather than take the risks of outlawry. Won driving; second and third the same. Clara Huron, lucky in escaping interference all the way, was in close pursuit of Alegra for the first three-' quarters, moved up fast under urging in the stretch and got up in the final stride. Alegra had the best of the start and, showing superior speed, set the pace fast until in the last few strides, where she tired and almost lost second place. Lady Oakland, from a slow beginning, gained steadily, finished fast and was probably best today. Miltiades ran a good race, but tired in the last furlong as if short. Katie Powers, poorly ridden, closed a big gap from a slow beginning and finished gamelv. Lady Charade had a rough trip and will Improve. Goldspink finished with a belated rush. Jerry C. and Edith M. tired after going a half. The winner was entered for $400; no bid. Overweights Clara Huron, 14 pounds; Broken Melody, 2. 70QQC SIXTH RACE 1 Mile and 70 Yards. Denigre, showing sudden improvement and well meant, went into a contending position with a rush and, better ridden, would have won. Anna Day had a rough trip, but ran well and finished gamely. John McBride came from a long way back in the stretch and ran a good race. Water Dog ran sluggishly for three-quarters and came with a late rush in the stretch. Grenade can do much better.
