La.. January 23. — Over a trark which was in frightful condition, an ordinary lot of lacers 1'urnislicd today's sport. Close finishes were in order throughout except in the third race. A steeplechase over the short course and two races for two-year-olds were the principal features. Favorites failed on live occasions. The only choice to win was Cooney K. His victory was a lucky one •pad he would have been liealen in another stride. The principal surprise of the afternoon occurred in the steeplechase when Bell-thc-Cat. in a desper ale drive, lipat Gold Circle l y the narrowest kind • pf a margin. Harney Schroiber started his California crack. Dr. Logan, in the race, but after showing superior form both as a juniper and racer tor the first turn of the MM, lie tired as if short and will no doubt reverse this running later ou. Another upset to shock the taleut came in the closing race when Redgauntlet. at a ridiculously false price, took the pnrse after a terrific stretch drive to beat Adesso. also at a long price. Detail", on which nearly all the feral students pinned their faith, again disappointed ibeni and. although run niug a good race, failed to finish better than third. Redgauntlct's owner neglected a good opportunity to even up some of bis receut heavv losses by allowing the horse to go to the post unbacked. Cooney K. and Posing, the latter making her first start in a long time, fought out the finish in the fourth race and the favorite barely lasted K ng enough to get by the judges in front, l'osing. but for suffering from much interference in the first quarter, would have won. Brougham, running in much improved form with blinkers, was backed extensively by his connections and spreadeagled his opponents in the third race, in which a good band of youngsters started. and verified his owners' statements that Ik- is one of the best colts at the track. Hammock Boy gained second place from Servicencc. In the opener another baud of two-year-olds made up the field and Tony W. scrambled home before T'-ddington. a first-time starter. A. Weber, owner ot Tony \V.. also furnished the winner of the fifth |M in Bridge Whist. The latter was much the best and had to be to win. Joekev s Niiid and Lang were each suspended by the starter for six days for disobedience at the post in the third race. Announcement was made today that beginning with Saturday seven races would be the daily offering at both tracks. Bernard Corrigan, the well known Kansas City railway magnate and brother of Edward Corrigan. was among today's visitors. He will remain several days before going to Cuba. Joseph A. Murphy, who came here to testify in the Kabb trial, returned to St. Louis. He will likely be the presiding judge this spring and summer at Toronto. Kenihvortb. and, possibly, the Hamilton meetings. Jockey .7. YV. Murphy has severed his connections with .1. W. Burttschell and will return to his home in Te\as. Captain J. il. Rees arrived today. Gives an English Newspaper Entertaining Statement — The Turf in General Alto. An interview with James 1'. Keene from England is going some distance for home news, but one that appeared in the London S|M rtsman recently, sent ou by its New York correspondent, is decidedly interesting and in part as follows: "Attributing his winnings principally to Colin, the champion two-year-old by Commando, out of Pastorella, and to Ballot and l'eter Pan. the three-year-olds. 1 asked how these horses compared with others here, especially Salvidere. De Muud and 1'raiik Gill (by Collar). "Mr. Keene immediately replied: 'I really do not care to compare mine with any of them, but you know what Colin has dona. Now. as to the three-year-olds and the talk of Frank Will and Salvidere. I believe I am warranted in sayiug that no matter where you looked, l'eter Ban was the best three-year-old of the season. He was such a gigantic horse and so heavy that be required a tremeudous amount of work and racing to get him into pro|»er condition, so I have sent him out to Major Daiugerfield. and he will go to the stud. Ballot tby Yoter. out of Ceritoi. however, will race next year, and then we will see more definitely what he is capable of. He is a realiy charming horse and. although he was l eaten by Salvidere. 1 think that after l'eter I'au he was the best three-year-old we had. He had a little trouble in lhe throat early in the season and that affected him somewhat right along, but at a utile and a half I thiuk he was unbeatable. 'As to Peter Pan. although the papers seem to have decided the question. I have not yet settled with Major Daiugerfield how I will dispose of the sralliou this year, but I Itiiuk it is extremely pro!. aide that the horse will be put to Pastor Ha.' ■Mention of the close of the season gave me an opportunity of asking how the American compared with the English turf at present. " 'Well.' said Mr. Keene. after a minute's hesitation. T have some very strong opinions on that subject, but I do not know that I care to give them in detail now. I think, however, we «ue gradually improving, ami we will continue to improve, but we want more votaries of the turf — we want them the same as in England. We want more gentlemen to become interested here and maintain the s[iort on a high level — gentlemen who will race for the s|KH-t and not for the mere money. Of course, it is very nice to win and to win money in stakes, but I would like to see more wealthy and independent gentlemen owning here than at present. We have not very many to depend upon and the Jockey Club has a good deal to contend with. " "There are the jockeys. I do not think it is a question of lightweights or continuous riding with them. They simply get into bad hands, they are flattered and pitted and spoiled and just as soon as they should become useful, they become worthless. We have trouble with them and with others, but, "as I have remarked. I think we are improving. - " T was. I may say. correctly quoted in The Sportsman after the Futurity, when I said that under similar circumstances iu England my colt, Colin, would have liecu M to 1 on instead of 5 to 2. a price offered on account of the unfair tactics pursued here, especially by jockeys. Iteally. no .price could have represented Colin — he was so immeasurably superior to the others. The question of jockeys is a serious one. As for my own stable. I have engaged Notter for next season and up to the present I think he is all right and a gixxl boy. " 'I would not say we do not compare favorably, but while we have many good owners. I would like to see. as 1 have said, more votaries — gentlemen who would race for tfio love of the sport alone. In that direction, of course. England is ahead of us.' "Ih you intend to race iu England next season?" I asked. " "Weli. I don't know that yet.' he answered. 'Of course. I have always entered horses in the big races and keep a few in training there, but I cannot say how they will turn out. There is Colin, for instance. I never kuew how lie would turn out. and. of course, didn't enter him. Colin un doubtedly would have won the Derby — not the slightest doubt about it. As in everything else, there is a lot of luck iu it. though I supi ose I cannot complain.' And then he significantly added: "Yes. I think .Mr. Croker was lucky to win the I lerliy — very lucky. ' "Regarding training operations. Mr. Keene spoke highly of Felix Leach, of Newmarket, and referred particularly to the ability of Sam Darling, who trained llisguise. As to his stable at Shccps-head Bay. he said he had a very promising lot of MM there in charge of James Howe. The latter had now been training for him twelve years and he thought he was fortunate in having his services. Of course. Ballot and Colin arc the stars of the stable, but Mr. Keene. iu kindly inviting me to I visit the training quarters, gave me a tip which, through The Sportsman, will settle a much-vexed question bare. An exceptionally fast aud finely built youngster at Sheepshead Bay has been 'spotted' by other trainers, and 'rail birds" and serious disputes have arisen as to whether he is a I colt by Disguise — St. Mildred, or one by Voter — ' Costume, lie is neither one nor the oilier. 1 was flsked to look out i specially tor Celt, by Commando -Maid of Erin, by Aniphion -Cerito. "Remembering that during his career Mr. Keene s has owned such celebrities as Foxhall, Commando. . Domino. Voter, St. Cloud, Sysonby. In addition 1 to those now in training, I ventured to put the B I inn- honored question: 'Well, after all, which 1 do you think was actually the best you ever r « w lied '■' " 'Ah.' he replied, 'it would be very hard to tell. Rain and Mud at Santa Anita Park: Weather Change Keeps Enthusiasts Away-Burns Handicap the Magnet of Departing Horsemen RAIN AND MUD AT SANTA ANITA PARK. Weather Change Keeps Enthusiasts Away — Burns Handicap the Magnet of Departing Horsemen. ( Los Angeles. Cal.. January 2."!. — An incessant rain accompanied by a cold northerly wind made climatic conditions unfavorable for race-goers today, aud the attendance was confined to the regulars. ' The changed track conditions permitted some of the mud running horses entered today to show their mettle. A big delegation of horsemen here will leave tonight for Oakland to witness the running of the Burns Handicap at the Emeryville track Saturday. The city ordinance which is to go into effect Sat unlay, is now said to also hit the daily papers, and they will not publish selections of probable winners iu the future. I'. T. Chinn and his friends extensively backed Senator Beckham to win the fifth race, and his victory was the most notable incident of the afternoon. Captain Emerich a.nd P. J. McKenna and wife were among the arrivals today. Hidden Hand, a Texas-bred filly in the stable of J. 1". Newman, won the first race ou the card after several futile attempts to win at this track. She was made the favorite today, and her backers were in susiiense throughout the running, as Kerry found the sloppy track just to his liking and proceeded to set the pace, closely followed by the favorite. Kerry tired iu the closing drive, allowing Hidden Hand to finish an easy winner, oritiaiuh. finishing with a rush, obtained third place. The change of track conditions probably caused the defeat of the favorite iu the second race, as Copper Princess did not seem to take kindly to it. Chilla proved the best in the going. Marion Rose found the track suited to her and made the third race a runaway affair. Prolific was her nearest contender, but never was dangerous. Lee Harrison II. lost the [dace by a head, but was an easy third. Lucky Lad set a fast pace in the fourth race, but failed to stay. Avontellus was badly outpaced in the early running, but outstayed Saiurida in a bard drive. Aquiline was backed to win the fifth race in a manner to indicate that the race was already run and won. but finished beaten off. The eastern contingent, headed by owner Chinn. scored a coup with Senator Beckham, which won in a canter after run-niug lapped on Booger Red. the pacemaker. Billy Bowlegs was an easy third. Long Island, of brain trouble, lllman hail been ill for nearly a year and his relatives placed him in the Long Island institution some time ago for treatment for his malady. Lllman went to California last winter for his health and it was there that he broke down, but returned to New York iu the early summer somewhat Improved in health. January 23. — President Geutge M. Heiidrie of the Windsor track stated last night that iu ail probability there would lie no racing in Windsor this similiter. This decision was reached on receipt of the news that the Niagara Jockey Club had decided to race for a period of thirty-six days at Fort Erie. President Hendrie said: '"Providing the report from Chicago that races will be conducted at the Fort Erie track for a period of thirty-six days, beginning Jwly 27 to September 5. is true, it will lie out of the question to endeavor to hold the usual meeting at Windsor." Mr. Hendrie further stated that the Windsor track had contemplated an eighteen-day meeting, beginning August 21», but thinks a conflict in dates would not be beneficial to the local track. There is but one chance for the Windsor meeting, the possibility of a law being passed making it impossible to carry on an extended iiieetiBg. tin February 5 the legislature meets iu Toronto and such a measure may be adopted. Burns Handicap Field Reduced to Nineteen Good Eligibles — Jockey Moreland Under Suspension and Investigation. Oakland. Cal.. January 23.— Jack Follausbee's old trainer, Harry M. Mason, got up from a sick bed aud came to the track to saddle the Duke of Milan for the closing race at Oakland today, although suffering from an incipient attack of pneumonia and in defiance of the doctor's orders. The youngster was in a playful mood and delayed his departure from the post long enough to take a • nip at Barney Schreiber's filly. Minnie Bright, ami got off badly, but got quickly down to the work before him. overhauled those in front of him one by one until nearing the finish he had only Minnie Bright to beat, passed the Schreiber filly with a meteoric end sprint and won a remarkable race, drawing out. The winner's flight of speed was phenomenal, and was greeted with tremendous applause. A good card was partially spoiled by rain, which commenced falling just before fhe first race. Favorites and well backed horses, however, monopolized the card despite the very bad going. Walter Miller scored two successes and kept up his wonderful winning average. The public had all the l»est of the argument with the layers. There was no stake feature programmed, but the card was excellent. Today's rain disposed of any possibility for a good track on Saturday, therefore only tried mud runners will have any chance in the Burns Handicap. After yesterday's declarations the big race is left with nineteen eligibles as follows: Horse. Wt. Horn-. Wt. Riftt man 125 Royal Maxim 102 Early Tide UU A. Edwards of the Metropolitan Jockey Club, announces the estalishnieut of a new stake for the* spriug meeting at the Jamaica track. It is a handicap for three-year-olds and over at one mile and a sixteenth with $1,500 iu added money. The ck»s-ing day for stake entries to be run for at the spring meeting at Jamaica will be February 17. The established races for mature horses will be renewed as follows: Excelsior Handicap, one mile and a sixteenth. $10,000 guaranteed: Montague, one mile and a sixteenth, $2,000 added; Kings Comity, Handicap, one mile and a sixteenth. $1,500 added: Paumonok Handicap, six furlongs. $1,500 added: Newtown, six furlongs, $1,000 added, and the Corona, one mile and a sixteenth. $1,000 added. The three-year-old specials will be the Williams-bridge Handicap, six furlongs, $1,500 added: Dtin-ton Stakes, six furiongs. $1.50l added, and the Columbus Stakes, one mile aud a sixteenth, $1,U0 ) added. Two-year-olds will to provided for as of yore in the Greenfield, four and a half furlongs. $1,500 added: Rosedale. four and a half furlongs, $1.50O added; Suffolk, live furlongs, Si.imo added aud the Elinhurst. five furlongs, $1.0 H added. The only project the Metropolitan Jockey Club has deferred until the skies brighten ■ bit is the scheme to lengthen lhe track at Jamaica from one mile to one mile and a furlong by moving the Long Island railroad tracks at the upper end of the course to the left a sufficient distance to make adding a sixteenth of a mile to each stretch possible. Tlie management realizes that the present cramped course does not meet the requirements of modern racing and that the track must be enlarged as soon as possible. When the enlargement of the main track is made the Metroiiolitau Jockey Club will construct within it a fine steeple-chase course. Washington Jockey Club Dates WASHINGTON JOCKEY CLUB DATES. New York. January 23. — The dates for the spring meeting of the Washington Jockey Club at Penning will be announced by the stewards of the Jockey Club withiu a day or two. The management of the Beunlug track has been busy for some time pre paring the stake b« ok for the meeting ami it will lie announced shortly. This puts to rest the rectal rumors that there would not be a spriug meeting held at Benning. The rumor was probably based upon the fact that dates were not made for Ben ning at the same time dates for the metropolitan tracks were decided upou. The "walk around" s s torn of lM»..kniaking. if is understood, will lie used again this spring. The dates Tor the meeting at Pinilico will, it is said, be announced iu the near future. Steepleehasing and hnrdle racing plays a much more important part on the English turf than it does in this country, being carried on steadily from the close of flat racing at Manchester in November to the March following. The result is more horses in the illegitimate branch of the sport, and a period of active and continuous employment for riders. many of whom, professional and amateur, are ae- complished horsemen.
