PRICE 5 CENTS Meelick's Brilliant Race: Hildreth's Colt Makes Chapultepec Appear Common in Crescent City Derby MEELICK'S BRILLIANT RACE ' HILDRETH'S COLT MAKES CHAPULTEPEC APPEAR COMMON IN CRESCENT CITY DERBY. Not Only Captures the Big Race Easily, but Sets a New Track Record for the Distance — Finkola Never a Contender. New Orleans, La., March 14.— S. C. Hildreth's double California Derby winner. Meelick. added to his laurels by annexing1 the Crescent City Derby today in a manner that stamps him one of the best three year olds in tin- country. What made his performance more notable was the fact that he had only ht hi nff t lie cars forty hours after a trip across the country. The race was a brilliant one from every angle, and will go down in racing history as the liest ever contested in the southland. The quartette f starters in the race were considered among the top-notchers in the country, and a great race was anticipated, but that Meelick, with his heavy impost, would lower the track record for the distance was unlooked fur. t'hapultepec. which finished second, clearly showed that he Is not Mee-lick's equal. The Burlew- & O'Neill representative was the early leader, but faltered at the critical moment when he was called on to prwve his mettle. Angelus and Plnkola, the latter a pronounced disappointment, were never serious contenders, and trailed the first pair hopelessly after the barrier was raised for the start. Chapultepec. breaking while in the act of wheeling from a side position, took the lead after going by the judges' stand for the first time, but on the first turn he bore out and McDaniel was forced to whip him across the head to keep him in. He again took the lead when fully around the turn and, aided by Dugan's restraining tactics on Meelick. Increased his advantage while going down the back-stretch. Dugan. however, was riding a confident race on Meelick. which was in close pursuit of Chapultepec. Behind the pair Angelus and Pinkola were trailing, the last-named seemingly sulking and thoroughly l eaten. After passing the three-quarters post Dugan called on Meelick, and the colt responded quickly, passing Chapultepec In the next half-dozen strides and, gaining the lead, the race was practically over. Chapultepec, under hard urging, retained second place from his stable companion, Angelus. After the finish, when the time of the race was made known, winners and losers alike vied with each other in paying tribute to a really groat colt, and the cheering was tremendous and prolonged. Ni ver before in the history of racing in this section has there been an attendance to equal the one at the Fair Grounds this afternoon. So dense did it become that all the gates leading to the infield were opened to allow the overflow to find space. The betting ring was a continuous jam throughout. The racing was spirited and immensely enjoyed by the holiday attendants; those of a speculative turn were disappointed, as upsets were frequent. The principal disappointment eanie with Chapultepec' s defeat. Intervene and Jack Witt also added to the bookmakers' profits by winning their respective races in commanding style. Escutcheon, Pedro and Hyperion II. were the winning choices. Fred Burlew. although sadly disappointed over rthe defeat of Chapultepec, had no excuses to offer «nd admitted defeat by a better horse. Dave Leary, who came here in charge of Meelick, was jubilant after his charge had been returned winner and said: "The colt's good race was no surprise to me. I maintained all along that he would win and did not feel in the least worried over the outeome after I was fully convinced that he LnXl stood the trip from California well, nis next Mar'* will l«e the City Park Derby and then I am instructed to ship east and, if he does not meet with a mishap, will be a starter in the Cartel-Handicap/' "Do you think he can beat Colin?" was asked « f Leary. "No. I don't," was the quick response. "Colin is the greatest race horse in the world." Owner Fizer was sadly disappointed over Pinkola's showing, but had no excuses to otter. Jockey Minder, who rode him, said that the colt pinned his cars back and refused to extend hiin-tolf at any stage of the race. Starter Cassidy left tonight for New York, where he will remain until the opening at Wasbingtoii. He will be succeeded by A. B. Dade. If Meelick captures the City Park Derby he will take rank with Claude as a winner of Derbys and is obviously a colt of more than ordinary m Tit. Bred by John K. Madden and sired by a horse Edward Corrigan brought back on his return from his racing venture in Kngland, he was bought from Madden last year for the reported price of $12,000. Prior to his purchase he had won a purse and two stake races for Madden. There was a dash of live and a half furlongs for maidens at Slvepshead Bay June 27, in whicli he defeated Besom, June Swift. Julia Powel and fourteen more aspiring youngsters in l:06j . Two days later he ran second to Colin for the Great 'Trial Stakes, with Monopolist. Stamina, Cohort, Firestone, Chapultepec and six more good ones behind him. He was not successful at Saratoga, but at the Sheepshead Bay fall meeting he won the Sapphire Stakes and Great Fastern Handicap. In the Sapphire he defeated Lawrence P. Daley, Live Wire and Nimbus at five and a half furlongs in 1:05|, carrying US pounds. .In the Great Fastern he had up 120 pounds and defeated Firestone, 121, Julia Powel. 100. Taken to California, he ■ won a purse and the Pasadena Handicap at Oakland for Hildreth before the close of last year. This year Meelick's career has been one to gratify any owner. His first start was at S'anta Anita. February 18, in a six-furlongs sprint, which he won from Mark Antony II., Old Timer and Canardo in 1:12. Then he went up to Oakland I ami won the California Derby in a canter by six lengths in front of Stanley Fay, running the mile • and a quarter in 2:00;, with 122 pounds up. Taken back to Santa Anita he was beaten in a fast-run i mile for a purse by Stanley Fay, no doubt because he had been indulged a bit after his success in i the Derby. This race took place March 3. Four • days later he won the Los Angeles Derby from i start to finish with all ease, and was at once I shipped to New Orleans to essay the capture of both of the Derbys there, one-half of which mission i he has now triumphantly accomplished. Bass' bay horse, Saucy, by Diamond Jubilee — Dame Agneta, met with an accident in his stable at Manton yesterday, which resulted in a broken neck, says the London Sporting Life of March 4. Sancy was five years old, and was bred by Mr. Russell Swanwick. As a two-year-old he failed to win a race, but the following season showed improvement by running second to Gorgos for the Two Thousand Guineas. He was, however, unplaced in the Derby. Then he won the Prince of Wales' Stakes at Asoot before being defeated by Black Arrow- in the Lingfield Park Plate. In the Zetland Plate at Newmarket he beat Slave-trader a head, and finished up by running second to Troutbeek in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. Saucy was at his best at four years of age, and commenced the season by dead-heating with Earl-ston, to which lie was giving thirty-two pounds, for the Chester Vase, following which he gave Polar Star a stone and beat him in the Rous Memorial Stakes at Ascot. Then came his most sensational race, when he was beaten a short head by Lally in the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park, blame for the defeat being laid on his jockey. Sancy then won the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket first Oetober. whilst he finished his career by running fourtli to Calvani. Bridge of Canny and Malua in the Champion Stakes at the second October meeting. He thus won five races of a toal value of £1 1,245. Sancy held some valuable engagements this year, comprising the March Stakes at Newmarket first Spring, the Coronation Cup at Epsom, the Ascot Cold Cup. the Alexandra Plate at Ascot, Princess of Wales' Stakes of 6.000 sovereigns at Newmarket first July, Jockey Club Stakes of 10,000 sovereigns at Newmarket first October, Champion Stakes at the second October meeting, and Limekiln Stakes at the Houghton meeting. ■ Peru Wins the Australian Cup PERU WINS THE AUSTRALIAN CUP. Oakland, Cal., March 14.- The prospective big field of starters in today's Thornton Stakes at Oakland finally dwindled down to four horses, the presence of the formidable pair of stayers, Big Bow and Livius. shutting out all but two of the long list of eligibles, Benvolio and Byronerdale, neither of which was seriously considered for first honors. Randall's ln ra finished third, thirty lengths away, and earned the $300 third money, while Byronerdale, by lauding fourth, saved his starting fee. Thomas H. Williams' new purchase. Big Bow, a perfect type of the old-fashioned four-mile-and-repeat stayer, fulfilled expectations by winning the great four-mile race with plenty to spare, from the gallant runner-up. The gaunt six-year-old uusexed son of Le Premier — Bess Owen, at all stages in the actual running, had the measure of his opposition, maintained leisurely pursuit of Byronerdale before he took command, au'd when menaced in the closing six furlongs of the long journey by Livius. proceeded to furnish the s( ectators with an exhibition of marvelous stamina uneqnaled in the history of four-mile racing on the Pacific coast. Colonel Jack Runs Fast Mile— Crowd Cheers Victories of Meelick and Big Bow. Los Angeles, Cal., March 14. — Racing Secretary E. C. Smith presented one of the best cards of the season, and the result was a noticeable increase in the attendance, the grandstand being crowded with a big half-holiday crowd. The victory of Meelick at New Orleans and the running of Big Bow and Livius in the Thornton Stakes at Oakland, were greeted with cheers from the grandstand. Their successes spoke volumes for the good horses that have raced here almost the entire season. Colonel Jack, running for the first time in the colors of R. F. Carman, won the mile handicap in a canter, running the distance in 1:38, and it is the opinion of his owner that he would have lowered the track record had there been anything in the race to force hiin to do his best. Carman more than won out the horse in wagers. Light Wool essayed to keep pace with the winner, but tired near the end. Melton Cloth was taken sick in the paddock and the judges excused hiiu from starting and allowed twenty minutes for a new book on the Colin Stakes. Ten of the best youngsters went to the post and after a delay of four minutes were sent away to a good start. Aunt Aggie set a fast pace to the stretch, closely followed by I^ee Rose and Del Cruzados. Near the end Musgrave took Lee Rose to the front and finished cantering. Under a hard ride Del Cruzados outstayed the early pacemaker. Shilling's splendid display of jockeyship in the last two races was one of the salient features of the day's sport. The entire Pasadena Stable will be sold at auction April 1. Twenty-flve lvooks drew in today and they received a bard drubbing. Page 2 DAILY RACING FORM PUBLISHED DAILY EXCEPT MONDAY. Keene has postponed his departure to Russia until his brother, G. H. Keene, somewhat recovers his health. Reservation came out of his last race with a bowed tendon, and his owner says he may never send him to the post again. William Gerst has 110 horses at his farm near Nashville, of which seventy-nine are in active training. Jumes Blute has been engaged to train them this year. William Cahill believes that Smiley Corbett will soon be able to maintain his speed over a long distance of ground, and is accordingly training bim with that end in view. Sir Archibald, who Is at present favorite for the Epsom Derby, at 5 to 1, will, if he starts, be ridden in the race by Mr. George Thursby, a wealthy amateur rider, whose brother is Sir John Thnrsby. Twice Mr. Thursby has ridden mounts into second place in the Derby — on John o' Gaunt and on Pic-ton. Jockey Walter Miller has bought $2,."i00 worth of the common stock of the new Utah Jockey Club, which will build a $225,000 race track near Salt Lake City. The Western Pacific Railroad and several English capitalists are interested in the venture. The track will be opened next year with six weeks of racing. H. T. Oxnard reports the arrival of twelve foals at his Blue Ridge Stud. Eight of them are by Islington and equally divided between the sexes. Oxnard has ten colts and the same number of Allies which are now yearlings by the same sire. They will be consigned to the summer sales in New York and he believes they will all bring good prices. Young Believes in Yorkshire Lad YOUNG BELIEVES IN YORKSHIRE LAD. Lexington, Ky., March 14. — "I think more of the future of imported Yorkshire Lad as a sire than I ever thought of any other stallion that ever entered the stud at McGrathiana," said Colonel Milton Young Wednesday afternoon in reporting the arrival the night before of the first foal begotten by this six-year-old son of the noted English sire, Dlnua Forget, and Rose Marjorie. "You surely mean to except Hanover," remarked one of Colonel Young's hearers. "No," he said after a moment's hesitation. "I do not mean to except Hanover. When I put Hanover into the stud I never had any idea that he would prove the great sire that he was. I do not think any one else believed that he would be a great success. You know they said he wasn't a 'thoroughbred.' that is some folks did. I thought he would get possibly a few good sprinters and milers, and there were a lot of people who thought that he wouldn't get anything. But there is no contaminated cross in the pedigree of Yorkshire Lad. He is English bred and English born and that counts a heap, particularly with the figure-system fellows. He did not have a particularly brilliant eareer on the turf, but he was a proved race horse. He started eighty-five times in three seasons, won twenty-one races, nineteen seconds and thirteen thirds, and earned nearly $15,000. "The late John Hanning brought him over here at the foot of his dam in the fall of 1908. a weanling. Mr. Camdttii bought the mare and I got the colt — a handsome little black fellow he was — for $300. I sent him out to New York the next summer as a yearling and sold him to M. L. Haytnan for $2,000. He raa in the name of M. L. Hayman as a two-year-old, but did not win a race until December at New Orleans. The- next year he raced in the name of J. L. Hayman- and won twelve races. In 1906 he was still in the stable of J. L. Hayman and at Aqueduct in April he ran a mile in 1:39. Along In the summer he was sold to A. L. Aste. but he never won a race for him. His last race was at Sheepshead Bay in September. 1906, and when It became known that he would not stand training another season I bought him from Mr. Asfe for $1,300. "Last spring I bred him to fifty-seven mares, forty-five of them my own. If I had not believed strongly in his future I would have been on the hunt for more outside mares. Yorkshire Lad hocks out better, stands over more ground, is broader through the jowels and wider between the eyes than any horse I have ever had in the stud, and I am staking my reputation as a prognosticator that when these racers of his first crop get to running two ! } years hence they will outshine the performances of the get of Cesarion, which, for two seasons now. has been at the bead of the column of sires of early two-year-old winners." This first foal by Yorkshire Lad Is from Fly Catcher, a young mare by Hastings, which was bred by August Belmont, and It is likewise her first foal. It is a bay colt.
