March 24. — Balmy weather ', was responsible for a greatly improved attendance at City Park today. The card was designed ti hiing together tin- i oorer class of horses in scrambles for •get away" pans, and this, together with a sticky track, made conditions favoring open betting and liberal odds in most of the races. In spite of the bad track and the poor racing material engaged, favorites and well-backed horses won all the laces except the first, which went to Nebraska Lass, an extreme outsider, and even she bad enough support to apprise the ring of the fact that ""something was doimr." The linish in the last race l etween Prytania and Hooray, the favorite, was one of the keenest and best seen here this winter. The pair ran as a leani through the last mile of the journey and at the end. through superior riding on the part of V. Powers. Prytania just managed to get her nose in front. Tiie placing caused considerable dissatisfaction and was attended by much booting and shouting. Kea tor's return to good form was one of the surprises of the day. This useful performer has proved a disappointment to bis owner. Frank K. Brown, here this season, who backed him on several occasions when he failed to put up any sort of a MlMnlll) race. Kvidontly he is just beginning to get into condition again, and besides that the track suited him. Brown and his friends backed biin at the profitable odds, and after waiting in the early running, Nieol brought him away in tne * stretch, wlnuiug witli consummate ease. The dis- w appointment of the race was the poor showing made by Plantland. Gold Circle's victory in the steeplechase was a w ell-earned one. The horse' was under pressure till through the latter part of the trip to withstand the game challenge of Bario. and but for the excellent ride he received from Archibald the chances are that he would have been beaten. It was remarkable, considering the state of the course, that only one horse. Little Wally, fell. It was one of the best races of its kind seen here in a long time, as all of the starters were closely grouped for the major portion of the trip. .1. II. McCormick sold Lady Almy .today to I*. Dunne. Jockeys W. Alien and T. Smith were each suspended for six days by the starter for disobedience at the post. For a similar offense Q, Swain was suspended for the remainder of the present meeting. J. C. Milam today sold Belle Scott to S. Richardson for a reported price of $1.:KK . Persons returning from Havana, who went there to engag- in the racing recently inaugurated, report that the Cuban city promises great possibilities, lint not under the present management. The men who have charge of the meeting are reported to know absolutely next to nothing about conducting racing affairs. {fee ■hurt is only half finished ami n meeting should not have lieen attempted tuis season. During t lie first f w days there was a splendid attendance, hut gradually it dwindled until only few now go to the track. Sprinkling carts and other paraphernalia that wouhl serve to help the sport, are an unknown quantity and the dust obscures any view of the horses. Syndicate bookmaking is in vogue, with Smith & Perry of Chicago in charge. Interpreters are necessary and the currency used ;s another puzzle the Americans have to contend with. Montreal Jockey Club's Spring Stakes MONTREAL JOCKEY CLUBS SPRING STAKES. The conditions governing entries to the seven Mak. s offered by the Montreal Jockey Club for de-elsion during the spring meeting to be held next June at the Blue Bonnets course have l een announced. The King's Plate, for three-year-olds and over, owned, foaled, raised and trained in the province of Quebec, that have never won a race, either on the Mat or across country, have never left Canada, and Jiave not been out of the province of Quebec since January I. 1908, are eligible to run for the fifty guineas annually given by bis majesty. King Kd-Ward VII.. and $750 added by the club. This is the most important race of the meeting and its running brings to the beautiful race course all the elite of Montreal and Quebec. Next in importance is the Mount Royal Handicap, for three-year-olds and over, at one mile and a quarter, which is the same distance as the King's Plate. Entries close April 30. The full list of stakes is as follows: For Two-Year-Olds. Kindergarten Stakes. $l.» 0O guaranteed; 5-S mile. For Three-Year-Olds. Blue Bonnets Stake . $1,000 guaranteed: 1 mile. Advocating an increase of government subventions in encouragement of horse breeding, the London Tini-s said recently: ""In France, for example, the subsidies in one form or another amount to i -omething like a quarter of a million per annum. ,-ind even mountainous Switzerland has a system of m 1 1 lag, horses for military purposes which has |.,cii i ureatlv approxed by some ,,f the war experts of thhl country. Burns Win Their First Race of the Year-No Betting Trouble ', INTERESTING RACING AT WASHINGTON. Holscher and T. Burns Win Their First Race of the Year — No Betting Trouble. Washington. D. C. March 24.— The second day's racing at Benning was a tremendous improvement over the opening day in the matter of weather, at least. It was a delightful spring day and. though following the opening, the attendance was good'. The card was not much, but several good races came out of the indifferent entries. The track had dried consideiably but is still deep and slow. The bettors have not exactly found the range as yet though several of the long shots today WCTC backed, especially Azure Maid. (Joes Fast and Holscher were the best backed horses in their races and th ■ books did not have any of the best of it on the whole. jockey McCarthy won half the card, riding ;.•• Fast. Poquessing and Beggarinan. Tommy Burns rode his first winner of the year on Holscher in the last race, this l eing a eWM of two old-timers coming back together. Jockey W. Walker was set down for six days for beating the barrier and br.-aking up several start.; in the Helming First Spring Handicap. There was no interruption of the betting today and no signs of trouble. Sixty books were on and the lietting in several of the races was pretty strong. Fifth in the American Stallion List FIFTH IN THE AMERICAN STALLION LIST. Ben Strome. the brown horse by Bend Or — Strath-fleet, which ranked fifth in the list of leading American sires of M07 and whose progeny in IMS showed a greater amount of earnings on the American turf than those of any other sire, was not particularly famed as a racer. His contests both in Kngland and this country, while clowned with few successes, showed him poss ssed of qualities indicating that good blood coursed through his \cins and the record of his sons aud daughters wherever found exemplified this well. In tflH he raced as a two-year-old under the colors of the Duke of Westminster in the Middle Park Plate at Newmarket, but was no", among th" winners until the following year when he captured a plat of 150 sovereigns for all ages at York. The same year he won a maiden plate at Leicester, lb-was second in the St. James Palace Stakes at Ascot and third in the Triennial Stak-s at the same course. In MM be i-an in twelve race*, in nine of whi.-h be was entered under the name of Mr. G. Haughton. who then became .his owner. He was second in three, third in three and unplaced in the remainder. In MM he was heard from in ten races, all in Kngland. finishing second in two and third in two. The following year found him in America, where be started in six races, being unplaced in all. Soon after he was retired to the stud and how good an account he gave of himself is best r corded in "the performances of bis splendid offspring. Among these Kos«ben stands well in the bad. this great sprinter having to his credit MS, MS in winnings during 1907. Ben Ban. another good horse, had $11,075 for the same period and I'.en Fleet, the two-vear-old brother to Highball, which died last year, stands third in th ■ list with $lo.7 ;s to his credit. March 24. — The latest arrivals at Churchill Downs from New Orleans are Carroll Iteid and W. H. Robinson. Ibdd brought up Bon Tro-vato and three two -year-olds. In the Kobinson consignment were Minnehaha. Blaze o'Light and another horse. Keid will train Dr. Neet's Astl.y Cooper, which is entered in the Bashford Manor Stakes. The finest stable of racers at the track is probably that of Komi Itespess. Joe Moser. his I . rby candidate, is training to expectations and the Pick Welles two-year-olds are the fastest youngsters here. Secretary Lyman Davis has received a telegram from T. C. McDowell to reserve twenty stalls for his horses. McDowell had contemplated chipping to New York, but has changpd his plans and will race his small stable on the Kentucky tracks. A Jarge force of men was put to work yesterday building a boulevard from Fourth avenue and i' str-et to the grandstand. This will obviate the ne- cessity of crossing the street car tracks when driving to the track from town. 1 Substitute for the City Park Derby: Big Handicap Suggested to Take Its Place as Likely to be More Interesting i i , i i SUBSTITUTE FOR THE CITY PARK DERBY. Big Handicap Suggested to Take Its Place As Likely to be More Interesting. New Orleans. La.. March 23. — The running of the two Derbys here this season has emphasized the fact that the City Park event, coming one week after the decision of the Fair Grounds big race for the three-year-olds, is lnuind to suffer both as a drawing attraction and in ante-post interest, if not ;.lways in the matter of a keen contest. The two events come close together. With rare exceptions all the prominent starters are candidates that have been tried out here both in their two-year-old and three-year-old forms. No matter what they may have done in previous efforts, their capabilities over the Per'ny route with weight up is quite another matter, and so the Crescent City race always receives a great deal of public attention lor weeks before tin running of the event. After the decision of the Crescent City race, however, form is exposed, anil interest lags with reference to the running of the City Park 1) rby. It would seem, therefore, as if the City Park Jockey Club might do a wise thing to abolish its Derby and substitute a $10,000 handicap, similar to the Harlem and Hawthorne Handicaps of several years ago, which were th.' big features of the summer racing at those two Chicago tracks, which always drew out the best horses in training, and always attracted overflow crowds to witness the running of them. Such a handicap would bring here a much better average class of horses four years old and upward from the east, as an owner would figure that besides whining opportunities in the purses and overnight races be would have a cnance to take down the big feature event of the City Park season. Following the Fair Grounds Derby, such an event would not only bring out all the best handicap horses, but a majority of the best three-year-olds ::s well. With an equitable adjustment of weights, announced say at least two weeks before the decision of the race, it would have great ante-post interest and would easily be in all respects the best (Wee of the local winter season, a race of as much interest and importance as the Burns Handicap now is at Oakland. Of course, some glamor always attaches to a Derby, but under circumstances where the public knew exactly, or near to the point of exactness, what the candidates are capable of, any Derby is bound to lose much of its attractiveness. This, at all events, is a suggestion well worth the consideration of the City Park Jockey Club. Among the betting people notliiug has occurred in a long time that has received as much attention as the announcement by the New Louisville Jockey Club that the speculation at the Churchill Downs spring meeting will be carried on through the Pari-mutuel machines. This is the mode of speculation employed in France, where it is sanctioned by the government, a small percentage reverting to the government for the purpose of improving the breed of cavalry and utility horses. In the late seventies and early eighties the machines were used in this country to a limited extent, in conjunction with auction jmioIs and the books, but subsequently both the machines and the auction pools were abandoned in favor of the books. Many prominent turfmen there still are in the east who lxdieve that the Pari-mutuels constitute the fairest and best manner of speculation, but conditions are such that there would hardly be a possibility of re-introducing them in that section. The Louisville experiment will receive careful consideration throughout the meeting there from racetrack managers as well as from the bookmakers and the public. Of course the machines can never be popular with the bookmakers, as it deprives them of the opportunity to do business. Their general introduction would throw out of employment thus-ands of bookmakers and their el rks. and naturally it is to be expected that from this class the plan will meet with opposition. Just why it has been decided to put in the machines at Louisville has not been explained, unless it may be a matter turn-, ing on some technicality of the Kentucky racing law or the possibility to derive a greater revenue than has heretofore been derived from the books. The system is likely to be cumbersome and awkward at first, and very likely unsatisfactory to the public, who are unaccustomed to it. but with familiarity it may be found to work satisfactorily. Thirty Leading Jockeys THIRTY LEADING JOCKEYS. C. H. Sbilling, Musgrave and Walter Miller scored the riding honors last week. At Santa Anita Shilling rode fifteen winners and is still at the head of the jockey list, and if he continues his present good form, is apt to remain there for quite a while. having a lead of thirteen winners over Miller, his nearest opindieiit. Musgrave piloted seven winners at Santa Anita, then went up to Oakland Saturday and scored brackets on Lee Rose in the Bell Stakes. At Oakland Miller's Men for the six days was seven. From time to time Daily Racing Form will publish a table of the comparative rating of those jockeys whoso skill in the saddle has already been well demonstrated and of those who have not arrived, but give promise of coming excellence. The handicap will divide these riders into four classifications, of watch those admittedly in the front rank of their calling will be indicated by 100. thence downward through 95 and 90 to SO, the lowest classification from which advancement upward will come when justified by good riding. The table will also show the number of mounts, wins, seconds, thirds and unplaced from January 1, 19o7. and will be corrected from week to week. The table is smaller than that heretofore published in Daily Racing Form, but contains more serviceable information and is as follows: Jockeys. Mts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp.Han. Reduction of Prominent German Stables '" e. 0. 7. il REDUCTION OF PROMINENT GERMAN STABLES There Is a teiidencv in Germany, save with one or two exceptions, to relinquish large stables. Breeders who showed their colors and found their plcasare in following the foals from the home pa.l docks into the Iraining stable and 011 to the rare toaise, have bud all the savor taken out of the former pastime by the suppression of betting. The famous •totalizator" has us many facilities tor finessing as were offered formerly and gives no tangible prool of in and out running by accident or design. I cannot understand how stewards can bring th ir consciences to warn off a jockey or proceed ag.iinst owner or trainer when it has lieen laid down that the system of betting actually in vogue is said to be the quintessence of honesty: a strong buckler and defense against every species of maneuver. Important stables have disappeared and with them a certain quantity of important races. The proof is found in the sum received each year by the I of li t I ■ J ' — 1 I'nion Clnb as entries and forfeits. The records the clnb show that the £33.545 r.-ceived in 19i l bus steudily declined, and that the amount received in 1907 only reached £19.136. The decrease shown in six years of n arly one-half should demand the attention of the government in a country with an open frontier where so much will dei end on an adequate supply of horses In those troublous timn that prophets foretell. — London Sportsman.
