NEW ORLEANS RACING GIVEN OVER TO THEM WITH ENTERTAINING RESULTS. Momentum Improves Quickly and Defeats Grimaldi and Charlie Eastman — Notter Rides Five Winners Out of Six Mounts — Owners Leaving. New Orleans. La.. March 27. — Today's card, a typical consolation one. served to bring together the poorer graele of horses that have liee-n racing here this winter, and a record number of starters for one day went to the |iost. The sport, despite Ihe big lields which caused much crowding, resulted in close finishes, and as the preferred ones in the speculation proved successful in most instances the talent had the better of their financial argument Willi the layers. Jockey Notter and his employer. C It. Ellison, enjoyed their banner day of the season. The former piloted live winners, and the blonde plunder is reported to ha\e cleared a bis ■■■ l'.v the rider's successes. Notter's lirst success came in the opening race-when l'inion led a good band of youngsters to the linish. Tin- surprise in the race was the suddenly improved showing of Lillian Hay. which was pressing the winner closely at the finish. Wausau. in the second race, was only slightly in less esteem than Risk. Th- pair had it between them almost for the entire trip, with Wausau winning, which was largely due to the listless ride Nicol put Hi) on the favorite. Frontenac was much the best of thos ■ that started in the third race and won as Notter pleased. Ben Strong lasting long enough to save second place from Hen Double. In contrast to his effort on Risk, Nicol gave a masicrlul exhibition on Momentum and led a fairly good band of sprinters to the finish in the fourth. «»rimaldi and Charlie Eastman fought it out for ,^^ second place, which the former finally secured. The ^P showing or II. ('. Kann in the race was disappointing and racing critics at once put him down as a jioor Kentucky Derby possibility. Crenad" had an easy time in winning the fifth Nee from the poorly ridden and much interfered with Gild. King Cole, during the early stages of the race, threatened to take the purs- by running kindly and leading by a good margin, but in the stretch run his old nvgaishness asserted itself and. by boring out and sulking, lie allowed Grenade and OKI to finish in front of him. Topsy Uobinsou gain d a cantering victory in the Pixth race in which Carew was liest. but succumbed on account of a bad ride on the part of J. Lee. Gilpin, under Notter's good riding, proved himself much the superior of Lady Vincent in the last race. Jockey A. Martin has been signed by J J. Mc-CafTerty". acting for .1. A. Wernberg. to ride the horses in his stable during the coming season. Jockey HiHKstis was suspended for ten days by ♦he starter for disobedience at the post in the first race, and W. Mt for six days lor the same offense in the second race. There will l e many departures from here for New York on the steamship which sails tomorrow. The old rumor that big booths and slates w ill lie in operation during the final two weeks of the Fair Grounds was revived today. Immediately after the second race there was a wild stampede in the 'betting ring, which, for a brief space, threatened a riot. It was caused by fisticuffs between two disputants and the fear of gun play. Roth belligerents were piickly hustled out of the gates. The following horses will be offered for sale by miction in the paddock before the racing tomorrow: Bcaaoaharst, Shining Star, Pillow. Miss Ferris. Lady Souffle. (;race Larsen. Staunch and True. Devout. Matross. Lindale and Bird of Prey. As the end of the season approaches there is :i marked falling off in attendance. The crowd was ■ small one today and little interest was shown. Tlie majority of tin- big layers have migrated to Benning. and those that are left are not handling many large commissii.ns. American Horse Wins Grand National AMERICAN HORSE WINS GRAND NATIONAL. Liverpool. England, March 27. — The Grand Na-lional Steeplechase, the greatest cross-country race in the world, worth : .O00 sovereigns and a trophy valued at 12." sovereigns, was run today over the QllM National course of four miles and Sod yards, mid won by Major F. Douglas-Pennant's ten year-old chestnut gelding. Kubio. by Star Ruby — La To- piera. by ten lengths. Mr. William Cooper's six-year old bay mare, Mattie Macgregor. by Kvan Mac gregor — Ju. was second, and Mr. P. Whitaker's h vcn-year-old chestnut gelding. Lawyer III., by Broxton — Solon, was third. The betting on the winner was 60 to 1 against: ■a Mattie Macgregor 2." to 1 against, and on Lawyer III., loo to 7 against. The race was notable for the number of favorites that failed to take all of the difficult jumps marking the course, a circumstance that allowed cm ouisidcr to capture the blue ribbon of ste ■pb-cliasing. The interest or Americans was centered in the performances of Foxhsill P. Keene's two candidates in the foremost steeplechase race Of the world, which were the ten-year-old chestnut mare. Chorus, by Chorister — Helena, by Mortemer. • ml the nine -ye ar old bay gelding. Prophet, by Hor-oscopt — Royal Nun, but neither of thein was a contender. The winner was the first horse bred in the T'nited States to win the race. Kubio was bred »iv James B. Haggin. foremost of American breeders, at his Rancho Del Paso establishment at Sacramento. California, in ISM. Kubio was sired by Star Ruby, which was bred by the Duke of Westminster, and after making two starts in the colors • if his breeder, in the Stockbridge Foal Stakes ami «he Rous Memorial Stakes, in both of which he was unplaced, was then sent to the 1'nited States, where lie became a great racer, winning among many others the Thornton Stakes, at four miles. A full brother to Rubio. Somlircro. was also a good race horse, winning (he California Derby, the Buffalo Derby and oilier races, and is BOW a stallion in Kliiicmlorf Stud. Rubio never raced in America, and made his first start under colors at the November. P.hMi. meeting at Kompton Park, finishing third to Sud-d««i Rise and Denton in a two-mile steeplechase. \i Hurst Park last vear he was second to Canary II. in the three-mile Grange Steeplechase Handicap. He then won the Newbury Stecplccha M and followed it with the Towcestcr Handicap at the ; raft on Hunt meeting. He was third to Anna lure and Asliton in the Nottingham Handicap Steeplechase, and again finished third to Springlmk and Paddy Maher in the Grand Sefton of two miles, neveii furlongs and lit) yards, over the Liverpool course November 7 last. Booger Red Wins in Sensational Finish: Takes the Feature from E. M. Fry by a Head-Lucky Lad Defeats Chimney Sweep B00GER RED WINS IN SENSATIONAL FINISH. Takes the Feature from E. M. Fry by a Head — Lucky Lad Defeats Chimney Sweep. Los Angeles. CM., March 27. — The Santa Anita Racing Association is certainly giving the poorer class of owners a chance to win a race in the closing days of the meeting, for the fields today were unwieldy and the selection of winners very difficult. The feature race of the day was the third, which was taken by Booger Red in a sensational drive from E. M. Fry. the former carrying the latter out in the closing strides. All Alone, which finished third, was backed by the eastern contingent, hut tired near the end when his chances of winning seemed good. The victories of Lucky Lad and Gentle Harry were a good break for tie- layers, many of whom recouped on their losses of the last few days. Most of the owners her ■ who ale going to race in the east this year arc getting ready to ship ami all of th"in will be on their way east by the end of next week. Jaims Donohue, the Chicago bookmaker, who has been here for several months, left for Chicago tonight by way of San Francisco. There were nineteen bookmakers in line. Thoroughbreds Sent to England THOROUGHBREDS SENT TO ENGLAND. Lexington. Ky.. March 27. — Just before leaving here for Atlanta Thursday. Scott Hudson received advice of the arrival in London of thirty-eight thoroughbreds liought by him at New Orleans and ex ported for sale to huntsmen in England and on the Continent. These horses are all at or about sixteen hands and are robust in appearance, though not necessarily sound. The prices paid for them ringed from $M to $308. In ages they range from three to seven years. For further racing purposes in this country they were practically worthless and since the- greatest number are geldings they, of course, have no value as breeding stock. It can be truly said that Mr. Hudson is doing much for the good of the- snort of racing in getting such as the- following uff the turf: Aber Nit. eh. g. 3, by Sanders— Orangeade. T'ncle James and Weberlields are the only horses among the number that were- winners last year. Bery YVaddell, which was bred by the late R. Bradley at Wilcox Landing in Virginia, is probably the most Bated performer in the collection. He raced many times on the flat and through the field and was a winner of a considerable sum. Sir Navarre is the brother in blood to Sal.idere. and is the colt for which C. R. Ellison paid f*,OO0 as a yearling when the last crop from the late C. F. McMeekin's Oakwood Stud was offered in New-York in September. 1906. Incidentally he is the colt for which Ellison wanted to claim the name Governor Hughes. The Jockey Club, for reasons of its own. advised Mr. Ellison that the name was not obtainable and Sir Navarre was taken as a substitute. lu his work at Memphis in the spring of 1907 Sir Navarre accpiitted himself so creditably that he was heralded as a world-beater, but he Went wrong and Kllison was never able to get him to the post. What a narrow escape for the distinguished chief executive of the State of New York, who is imw exerting his every effort to put the greatest of outdoor sports under the ban. C. B. Reid is another distinguished counterfeit in this collection. He was bred by John Morris at Woodburu Stud and was sold as a yearling to Louis A. Cella for $l'..~ oo. He was named for the tr-.im-r of that good horse The Picket, and made two appearances under the colors of the chief of the St. Louis race-track confederacy — once last year and once this year — but was not in the money in either race. Mr. Hudson «ays lie is in the market for as many more of the kind as he can buy. and he will go to New Orleans next week to remain until the close of the season thin- cm April 11. in the hope that he will be able to pick up another carload or two. "There are plenty of horses at New Orleans that come up to my reipiirements for exportation." said he. "but they are hard to buy. One might think that owners would be glad to get rid of such horses at any price, but not so. They have an undelinablc attachment for them, and I have had sonic- men actually cry when they were selling their horses to me. and in more than one instance I have let them have the horses back." Form of New Orleans Two-Year-Olds: Instructive Analysis of the Merits of the Youngsters Raced over Southern Tracks FORM OF NEW ORLEANS TWO-YEAR-OLDS. Instructive Analysis of the Merits of the Youngsters Raced Over Southern Tracks. New Orleans. La.. March 2C— Now that the local racing season is Hearing an end, it is possible to indicate with a good deal of accuracy the quality of the two-year-olds that have lieen developed here this winter. No really first-class ones have be.-n brought out. but the showing has been a surprisingly good one. as more youngsters of the better class have gon to the post than in any other season. L. A. (Vila's stable has far outclassed all others both in the huhiIht and the- caliber of its juvenile- material. Mr. Cella has started ten two-year-olds. Of the sc eight have been returned winners. The following of his youngsters earned brackets as stated: Marse Abe. S races, including the- Carnival Stak.s; Sea Swell. .". including the Premier Stakes; Ladv I.e-ota, 1: Fore. 1: Irrigator, 1; She Wolf, 1; Ario-.iette. 2. and Inela. 1. This is a most remarkable showing and one that was Deter before cvem approached here. The suc-coss of the Cella two-year-olds is responsible for the- fact that the Si. Louis turfman now h.-aels the list of winning owners with something like $2:1,000 to his credit. Marse Abe and Sea Swell are; not only the best of the Cella lot that have started, but much the be-st of all the other juveniles that have Billed colors on the local tracks this winter. The stable people- say Sea Swell is the be-tter of the pair, but th • writer would prefer to take a chance on Marse Abe. both on bree-ding and e-onformalion. as well on game-ness. weight-carrying ability anil winning quality. Besides his eight wins, he only started on.- other time wh.-n he finished second to Sea Swell in the Premie-r Stakes. This is a most notable record for any two-year-old so early in the seas. 'ii. Mars • Abe is of me-elium size, but he is a stout, well proportioned, smooth actioned. wiry type, one- that, if he- trains on. will make a very valuable bone, for betting purposes at any rate. Mr. Cella has some t n other two-year-olds, none if which has been started here. Supposedly these are letter than the ones that have been sent to the post. If so. the stable will go cast with a powerful aggregation erf juv. nile- mat rial. Edward Corrigan baa a big band of two-year-olds, most of which are at Lexington, and it is more than likely that he will show two or three clinkers at th;-Lexington. Louisville and Latonia meetings. Only the "s. conds" of his lot were brought down here and these have, with one or two exceptions, been backward in their training. Not much can be said of those which have started outside of the winners, as they have nearly all been tried repeatedly and found wanting. Some of them, of e-ourse, will develop winning form later on. R. Tucker's Maritza and J. I. Sockwell's Brougham have been disappointments. Both we-re highly tried and much was ex-I eet'd of them. Brougham is a more than ordinarily good looking colt, has shown improvement and will likely continue to do so. Tom Holland has always t een hammering in and around the money, but has not been able to win. He is a sizable, well built colt, and may do hotter things yet. Mrs. Sewall is a likely looking filly, but of the same ilk as Tom Holland. Guy Fishe-r. one of Schreibi-r's lot. still a maiden, is a big. growthy. powerful e-olt that will jump out and earn brackets one of these days. Of all the non winners Poe-otaligo has impressed the writer as the most likely sort. He is a big colt, well put together, but a slow b ginner. He has lost one or twe races that he should have won. and will un-doubte-elly lie heard from later in the season. A complete list of the two-year-old winners to and including March 17. is given below, with comments on their breeding, conformation and merit as racing propositions: January 1 — Irfaneh — J. Whitlaw's bay filly, by Mesmerist — La Cheviot. Beat e rdinary lot of green one-s. Fair filly, with some size and substance to her. January 4 — Anne Mctiee. bay filly, by Marta Santa — California. Led all the way and won in a drive from Holy Mass (l'inion). Roseburg II. . Cunning, Brougham and others finished behind her. This is a small but very compact aud well-built tilly, with gexid depth through the shoulder. She ought to win up the line in ordinary company, but' does not fancy any kind of heavy going. Wants a fast track. January 7 — Alice — J. Capo's chestnut filly, by Fatherless — Eostre. Beat Cunning in a drive by a head on heavy track. Arionette and Pinion best that finished behind her. Cunning would have won this race but for a weak finish. Only ordinary sort of filly. January 0 — Marse Abe — L. A. Cella's chestnut colt, by Yankee — Halo. Running green, won in a drive with Hammock Boy. Best colt shown here this winter. Is of tmdium size, but compact, and for what there is to him a race horse all over. Can carry weight and run in any kind of going. This is as useful a colt as was ever developed here and erne that should win in any ordinary conipany on the eastern tracks at the early me-etings. In fae-t, seasoned as he is. he ought to be a factor in any of his early starts in the east. January 11 — Marse Abe — Beat Irfaneh by a head in a drive in big field on heavy track. J. Lee rode and could have finished further off. January 13— Arionette — L. A. Cella's bay filly, by Cesariem — Fonsolette. Won easily from l'inion. Cunning and others. This is a filly of considerable substance and cpiality, one of the best that have raced here January 14 — Sea Swell — L. A. Cella's chestnut colt, by Cesarion — Nydia. Beat big field of oulinary ones easily. This is a well-built colt of considerable size and substance, ami, next to Marse Abe, the- best of the local lot. January ]( — Lady Leota — L. A. Cella's chestnut filly, by" Voter — Dovecote. Beat a big field in a elrive This is a very fast filly, but of small size and light barrelled. I'nder feather weight she might win in fair e-ompany. January Is — Marse- Abe — Beat Anne McOee and big field in a elrive. but again could have won by a i-omfe rtable margin had Lee so desired. January 20 — Elizabeth Harwnod — E. Ce rrigan's bay filly." by Marta Santa — Proclaim. Beat Helen Kidder and others in a drive. This is a filly of some size- and substance, good shoulder depth and well quartered. She is game, and is one of the two or three liest fillies of the winter. She is one-that should go on and improve into winning form up the line. January 21 — Injury — J. W. Fuller's bay gelding, by Marehmont II. — Sweet Danger. Beat Moderate led in hard elrive. Not much. January 22 —Cunning — A. H. & D. H. Morris' bay filly, by Chilton — Pre-stidigitatrice. Won driving from Nasturtia anil others. This is a filly of good substance and above the- average of those shown here. Especially good in heavy going January 23 — Tony W. —A. Weber's e-hestnut colt, by Marehmont II. — Sweet Danger. Beat moderate banel in a drive. This is a e-edt of good size, well put up. and one that has been e-emstantly improving. Looks like improving and might have I winning chances aj early eastern meetings. January 2.S— Fete — Mrs. R. W. Walden's gray | filly, by Faraday — Festa. Beat a poor lot of maidens easily. Does not call for much. i January 29— Fore — L. A. Cella's chestnut filly, by Cesarion — In Front. Carrying 110 pounds, weal National Stakes in a drive from stable companion; ; Sea Swell, Elizabeth Harwood, Anne McGee, Brougham, Cunning and Gloriole finishing behind : her. Seeley & Co.'s bay-filly, by Buck Massie— Holy Bird. B -at fair band iu canter. This is a very fast filly, but too small i to be of much value in racing unless under light imposts. She is a useful sort at that. January 31 — Hammock Boy — ('. T. Brownfield's chestnut colt, by Hammock — Sister Adeline. Beat fair band, winning from Craftsman by a nose. "Cricket" Kelly Disabled: Little Rider Has His Foot Crushed in the Last Race at Oakland "CRICKET" KELLY DISABLED. LITTLE RIDER HAS HIS FOOT CRUSHED IN THE LAST RACE AT OAKLAND. Walter Miller in the First Race and Gypsy King in the Last Race the Only Winning Favorites — Downpatrick Scores for Ryan. Oakland. Cal., March 27.— "Cricket" Kelly, the hero of Thursday's sensational bareback exploit on Wing Ting, was the victim of rough riding while piloting Cruzados in the last race- at Oakland today and put out of commssion entirely with a crushed foot. According to the- report of patrol judge- Freel Mulholland. "Midget" Walsh, on Gypsy King, the favorite and ultimate winner, ran amuck and when passing St. Elmwood on the backstretch. the little dareele-vil jockey crowdeel the latter and forced Cruzados against the fence-, disabling the aged sprinter's joe-key and causing him to pull his mount up Sharp ly to avoid going eiver the fence into the infield. From the grandstand it app. ared as if Walter Miller, on St. Klmwoexl. was at fault. As a matter of fact. Miller would have landed the Spreck-els horse in the- first thre-e at the finish but for the bitter's evident tendency to bore into the rail all through the race. The racing was marked by about the wewst starting that has been seen here in a long time. Wap, in the third race, and J. R. Laughre-y in the fifth, were two favorites left at the post that might have won with good starts. I'eir a card that lacked stake features, tcxlay's offering was exe-ellent and produced racing which e-otild not be excelled. The opening and closing rac.-s wore captured by favorites in the lietting, Walter Miller and Gypsy King. The intervening four races we-nt to outsielers. There is only one conclusion possible- in the case of Downpatrlck's sudden awake-ning in th ■ fourth race today and that is that T. II. Ryan's lmrse was not at his' best in his two previous races. W. W. Finn claimed St. Avon out of the third rae.- for $1.32r . Al Monrissey. president of the Metropolitan Turf Benevolent Association, will leave for New York next Sunday, going via Los Angeles, where he will stop over for one day only. Dr. Lee Falls When Far in the Lead: Successful Long Shots Add Spice to the Racing at Washington DR. LEE FALLS WHEN FAR IN THE LEAD. Successful Long Shots Add Spice to the Racing at Washington. Washington. D. C. March 27. — Real fine, summer-like weather prevailed toelay. and all who eouid be were at the track to take advantage of the outdoor sport. The crowd was thoroughly representative of the liest race-going citizenship of Washington, and with as fine we-ather tomorrow the grandstand and ehshhsase will be taxed to their full capacity to accommodate the crowd which will come out to the track. A capital card is programmed for decision tomorrow, including the Nursery Stakes, the Spring Handicap Steeplechase and the Potomac Purse Race, besides three dashes over the Columbia course. The racing today furnished several close finishes and two distinct surprises, the successes of Park Row and Richmond Duke, which defeated the favorites in their respective races, with long odds quote-d against their chances. The defeat of Dr. Lee in the first race started the talent off badly on the dav, and also was disastrous for jockeys T. Burns, W. Walsh and J. J. Walsh, who had miraculous escapes from death when their mounts. Dr. Lee, Comedienne and Kemp-ton, fell in a cloud of dust at the head of the stretch. It was caused by Dr. Lee. which was leading by many lengths at the time, crossing his legs and falling, the others going over him. Neither riders nor horses were hurt. Firebrand was not caught in the mishap and coming on won easily. John E. Madden saddled his second winner i f the meeting in Court Lady, which won the maiden race for twoyear-old fillies. Goes Fast scored again in the third race by out-gaming Woodlane in a rousing finish. The latter led to the stretch, where she tired and probablv was ne t fit for a bruising race, as she is a sour-tenipered filly, and refuses to work by herself and is likely to continue to be an unreliable proposition during the rest of the meeting. Call Boy, running for the first time in the colors of his ne-w owner. G. W. Langdon. was an even-money favorite to win the fourth race. He was no match feir Richmond Duke, the winner, but wonld have finished closer up' but for swerving in the stretch. Samuel II. Harris was the second heavilv backed favorite to finish second when Park Row "outbroke and outpaced his opi onents in the fifth race to win in a canter after losing several lengths on the stretch turn. C W. Langdon was not sufficiently disheartened with the defeat of Call Boy to permit his see-ond starter. Animus, to go to the post except at less than even money. Langdon was not alone in backing his horse, as all the sharpshoote-rs considered Animus the- e ne to bring order out of chaos. They we-re dlssppoioted, as Animus was unable to even keep within striking distance of the leaders and was tiring badly at the end. The finish between Campaigner and Killiecrankie was so close that many thought that Killiecrankie had won the rae-e-. Eighty layers of odds were in treat of the grin. Island toelay and a greate-r numlier will probably be on hand tomorrow afternoon to care for the wants e f the holiday crowd. Mutuel Machines Ready at Louisville MTJTUEL MACHINES READY AT LOUISVILLE.
