Page [1] Jack Atkin Once Again.: Defeats Restigouche In The Montague Stakes At Weight-For-Age.; Trance Conquers Top Note in the Rosedale Stakes--Horace E. Displays Remarkable Speed in Defeating Baby Wolf. JACK ATKIN ONCE iGAIN DEFEATS RESTIGOUCHE IN THE MONTAGUE STAKES AT WEIGHTFORAGE Tranco Cdnquers Top Note in the Rosedalo Stakes Horace E Displays Remarkable Speed in Defeating Baby Wolf New York May 0 At Timaica today Tack Atkin easily defeated his only competitor Restigouche for tlio Montague Stakes but the latter seems to be an illfiitiil horse in races with only two starters and the race was a repetition of the Sterling Stakes at Aqueduct when Chapnltepecs victory was made questionable by his interference with Restlgouche It is rather a singular Coincident that the Montague like the Sterling is a weightforagei race with two starters in each and the rider of Restigouche making a claim of foul In both For six furlongs Jack Atkin and Restigonche ran like a team when Jack Atkin began to slip away but never gained a big lend At the quarter post he had a lengths advantage but Rcstlgmiche seemed to be gaining when bo suddenly faltered and Jack Atkin Ixmnded away to a lead of live lengths in a jiffy which he held to the end endEvery Every one believed that Restigouchc had stepped in a bad spot in the course and there was general surprise when Notter went up to claim a foul The evidence of the patrol judge who was very near the scene of 41iu incident was that Rcstigouche ran upon Jack Atkin and that the latter was in no way to blame It is quite probable that Notter started to take Restlgouche inside of Jack Atkin when the latter was not entirely clear The in ¬ cident spoiled a most interesting contest as Resti gouche was going well at the ime and might have given the winner a close argument Restigoncbe had a slight cut on one of his ankles but Jack Atkin was unhurt While Jack Atkin was a good favorite there was a lot of wise support for Resti gonche which was hardly justified by his public form formThe The tabulated history of the Montague Stakes is as follows iear followsiear Winner A Wt Jockey Val Time 1203 Ytllow Tail 5 I20Waterbury 2005 140 v 1004 of her good class by her victory in the Rosedale Stakes in which she showed a truly remarkabe performance She was conceding Mven iwuiuls to the other starters and it seemed to be a twoJiorse race with Trance and Top Note as the contenders Top Notes only race hail boon such a good one that she was made a slight favorite but at the end both she and Trance were at 11 to 10 Top Notes preliminary gallop was not encouraging as she seemed to go short and choppy and the bettors were very much at sea regarding the merits of the pair But when it came to racing Trance quickly showed her superiority She Itroke fast and opened up a gap of four lengths in the llrst quarter which she ran in 22i Mnsgrave then steadied her to the turn for home from where she bounded away again to win eased up by eight lengths She ran the four and a half furlongs in Mi remarkable time for the condition of the track and the ease with which she won It appears more than ever that she may develop Into a highclass Conditions.; Polly Prim Wins the Clark Handicap from The Minks and Pinkola--Al Muller Is Beaten by Darknight. LOUISVILLE EACING DRAWS SATURDAYS CROWD A GREAT ONE DESPITE UNFAVORABLE TRACK CONDITIONS Polly Prim Wins the Clark Handicap from The Minks and Pinkola Al Muller Is Beaten by Darknight Louisville Ky May 0 For the first time since the beginning of this meeting favorable weather pre ¬ vailed and it caused a large attendance The track however was frightfully Iwd and it required the sturdiest type of thoroughbred to run in the going successfully Under favorable conditions todays card would have been a splendid offering containing as it did the Clark Handicap in which 102 horses were originally nominated The bad going however precluded any possibility of a big field and little disappointment was manifest when only three start ¬ ers fought it out for the 1070 that went to the winner J R Wainwrights good filly Polly Prim ran a splendid race and landed the prize after a terrific struggle In the last furlong to outstay The Minks while Pinkola far back took the small por ¬ tion of the purse Polly Prim was greatly favored by good racing luck inasmuch that Pinkola and The Minks in the early running indulged in a bumping match With her clear sailing Powers was enabled to keep Polly Prim in the lead for threequarters under steadying restraint and when The Minks chal ¬ lenged in the stretch run she had enough to with ¬ stand his rush Pinkola labored in the going and showed a tendency to sulk His performance today was not his true form formThe The condensed history of the Clark Handicap since 1000 is as follows Year Winner A Wt Jockey Val Tim 1000 Lieutenant Glbsonl27 Boland 3350 154 154J001 J001 His Eminence 127 Winkfield y350 1 55 1002leatb 7 115 Slack 1000147 1003 Loves Labor 100 Scully 2150 148 1004 Colonial Girl 5 100 Lyne 2170148 1005 Batts 4 104 Nicol 2070 153 J J10W 10W Hyperion II 3 103W Mclntyre 2100 140 1207 The Minks 4 110 Nicol 1820 150 1008 Polly Prim 5 1171V Powers 1G70 153 J Changed JChanged to handicap for threeyearolds and over and distance reduced to 1 115 miles milesThe The third race for sprinters at threequarters brought together a good band of shortdistance racers and resulted in the defeat of the heavily supported Al Muller by Darknight Al Muller might have been best today but the inexperienced Ed miston rushed him into exhauston in the first half and he was unable to withstand the winners chal ¬ lenge at the end Colonel Bob by showing an im ¬ proved performance over his last previous effort landed in third place placeThe The closing race went to Margaret Randolph pay ¬ ing a long price in the straight nmtnels Ed Kane which finished second ran the best race but under Incompetent riding he was forced to sustain de ¬ feat The poor showing of Synchronized caused un ¬ favorable comment but it was unwarranted as he la a poor sort of racer racerTony Tony W showed himself to be a fair sort of colt especially on a muddy track by the easy manner in which he disposed of his opponents in the fifth race Light Blue which lln isjied third might have given him a closer argu ¬ ment but for the fact that he was subjected to much early interference Judge Lneders a flashy looking youngster owned by Fred Cook and for which he paid a stiff price made his debut in tho race and showed speed but was tiring near the nd He runningThat will show improvement and reverse this running That Advancing is a good filly was again demon ¬ strated in the opening race when she made a show of the other starters and won with ridiculous ease from Lillian Ray and Inela InelaBoserrlau Boserrlau proved a surprise when he led for the entire trip in the second race and won witli plenty to spare from Floridaglen Pimlico Meeting Comes To A Close.: Rio Grande Takes the Amateur Cup--Little Lighter Under Investigation--Horses Sold.
