CLOSED AT SHEEPSHEAD BAY FAIR PLAY TAKES THE LAWRENCE REALIZA TION WITHOUT BEING EXTENDED Sir Martin Defeats Helmet in tho Second Half of ofthe the Double Event Coney Island Stakes StakesAnnounced Announced as Usual New York July C The Coney Island Jockey Club arranged a brilliant card for the getaway day of its memorable JuneJuly meeting of 1008 It included such features as the famous Lawrence Realization the second half of the Double Event and four sup ¬ plementary overnight races While of lesser value tin Double Event far overshadowed Its big three yearold counter attraction as a purely racing fea ¬ ture in that a large portion of the expectant race going public have been anticipating a probable de ¬ feat for the hitherto invincible Madden ipair Sir Martin and Fayette for a week past or ever since the running of the Groat Trial on June 27 when the green and supposedly nonseasoned Helmet gave thorn both such a hard nice Hence todays renewal of that memorable struggle between the trio of best twoyearolds of the season excited the most widespread interest This state of affairs was re ¬ flected by the betting the bulk of the wagering on the race centering on the Keene entry Helmet and Selectman In an extraordinary flight of speed Helmet the preferred one of the pair flattered Ills Iwickcrs for a full five furlongs of the journey with a lead of anywhere from five to eight lengths over Ills nearest pursuer Rowes audibly voiced misgiv ¬ ings early in the race that his colt could not stay after l elng the victim of such heartbreaking and suicidal paccmaking tactics were suddenly verified in the closing furlong the big black succumbing so luickly to the Madden thunderbolt Sir Martin that it caused the big throng of spectators to gasp with Jistonlshment Fayette for which his owner had refused 40000 casli while being saddled for his last race histcd long enough to save third plate from Bobbin Torbollino and Statesman which were all three on top of him at the finish finishThe The Realization brought out only four threeyear olds Antaeus originally named as a starter was withdrawn aiid Alfred Noble added Owing to re rent favorable training reports about Colin there wore many present who had an idea that the cham ¬ pion himself might be an added starter and this vastly Increased the prestige of the race This was not to bo however and the nice developed Into the onesided affair that the Imtting indicated it would Fair Play was firm in the market at 1 to 4 In the running he justified the confidence rejx sed in him by moving up leisurely when called upon at the end of the first mile taking the lead from Div rante without any perceptible acceleration in his stride and maintaining his advantage without urging to the end King James became the runnerup in H gallant effort For his inches Maddens little liorse is a wonder and in almost any season but the profusionFavorite present would Iw winning stakes in profusion Favorite players received n partial setlmck today The odds about two of the winning public choices were practically prohibitive and it is presumed that only the immediate stable connections profited over Grapples victory on the grass course Chepontuc Roseben Tourenne and Marathon were all heavily Iwcked and the defeat of the last named by Fri zette in the closing race capped the climax of an afternoon of unprofitable sport to tlie speculatively inclined inclinedAs As a final crowning act of lilxraHty and support for racing the Coney Island Jockey Club today issued entry blanks containing announcement of the closing of the supplementary entries on July 15 to live rich slakes which will be decided at their com ¬ ing autumn meeting Their names and probable values are The Flatbush of 17000 the Great Eastern of 7500 the Autumn of 5000 the Flight of C000 and the September of 0000 0000Tlie Tlie Saratoga Association gave out some encourag ¬ ing news today To get a line on just where they stood and what patronage they might expect at the August meeting at the Spa subscribing members and former boxholders were communicated with with gratifying results The replies received indicated that at least ninetenths of their former patrons would be on hand this year There was a persistent rumor In circulation today that Saratoga might transfer its racing to Brighton Beach Andrew Miller however denied this Another rumor and one that was believed by many although no one in authority would either deny or aflirm it was to the effect that Empire City would hold its mectln at the beach course courseOne One of he early track specials got into trouble In the yard here today when the last car jumped the track 100 yards from its stopping place ob ¬ structing the Long Island line for some time A wrecking train was rushed to the scene but Ixjfore the track was cleared many persons bound for the race distanceThe course were compelled to walk some distance The heat was Intolerably oppressive in New York and vicinity but a direct breeze from the ocean swept the grandstand and tlie 12000 turf devotees present at Sheepshead Bay were probably very glad they were there The police arrangements were the same as ever and it is said they will be con ¬ tinued at Brighton Telegraph connections will be resumed tomorrow by the Western Union UnionA A man by the nanie of Hart was arrested in tlie grandstand just before the second race by a deputy sheriff Michael Ray and Joseph Noonan who were with him were also taken but subsequently released It seems that Hart and his friends wound up a heated discussion regarding the relative merits of the horses engaged in the second race by wager ¬ ing one another a dinner on tbc outcome This alleged violation of the HartAgnew antibetting law was witnessed by tlie deputy sheriff with the aforesaid results resultsGrapple Grapple appears to be almost Invincible over the turf track He smashed a recently established record In running the nine furlongs of his race in Amended Stakes Of Saratoga Meeting. AMENDED STAKES OF SARATOGA MEETING New York July C Conditions have been an ¬ nounced for the amended stakes of the Saratoga meeting There are four of tlie old ones that have been remodeled so far as the prizes are concerned and the closing is set for July 1 The stakes are the Saratoga Handicap the Merchants and Citizens Handicap the Catskill Handicap and the Bevcrwyck Handicap Steeplechase The SteeplechaseThe Saratoga Handicap is made a 1500 race and a llko prize is tixed for the Merchants and Citizens The Catskill Is fixed at 1000 and tlie steeplechase bus a value of 1200 In all four of the races no added money Is offered The Saratoga Handicap alls for a subscription of 50 each and 25 forfeit For the Merchants and Citizens It is 25 entrance and 25 additional to start Tho Catskill is 10 entrance and 25 additional to start while tin steeplechase Is framed In the same fashion as the Saratoga Handicap so far as entrance Is concerned Indcr concernedIndcr such conditions it is possible for the asso ¬ ciation to continue its old fixtures without standing to lose much A moderate number of nominations will pay any one of the purses and indeed It would be possible under such an arrangement for the association to make money on tuu races Condensed History Of The Lawrence Realization Stakes.
