SIR LYfflEWOODS VICTORY SUNS AWAY FROM OPPONENTS AT BRIGHTON BEACH UNDER HEAVY WEIGHT Watcrvliet Wins Like a Good TwoYearOld Earl EarlG G Defeats Trash and Juggler Two Horses 1 Bleed in One Race New York July 10 Sir Lynnewood the only flat runner in the stable of J K AVidcner carried top weight and won the feature race of the card at Brighton Beach this afternoon with great ease from ix others including the highpriced but disappoint ¬ ing FQiintainblue Zieuap and others Notwithstand ¬ ing that the Brady horse has invariably pulled up lame after every one of his recent races the public made him a strong second choice Sir Lynnewood was always an oddson favorite and monopolized the big support This veteran racer is one of the most conspicuous examples of a thoroughbred im ¬ proved with age of the past decade Formerly con lined exclusively to participation in sprint races the grand looking son of Sir Dixon Lady Wayward bids fair to make his mark as a longdistance per ¬ former in his old age as a racer racerWeather Weather conditions were perfect The track was fast but a trifle too hard and the card offered nearly a highclass one from a racing standpoint despite its lack of stake features The racing compared favorably with any afternoon program of the season although any lirst money on the program did not exceed 25 25The The record of the present meeting for formful results is still kept up three favorites one second choice and two comparative outsiders proving suc ¬ cessful cessfulWalter Walter Millers skill enabled Golconda to capture the maiden opening race for threeyearolds and over at one mile and a sixteenth The steeplechase which followed and was won by Waterspeed devel ¬ oped into a procession hut was interesting enough to watch although the result was hardly ever in doubt doubtWatervliet Watervliet continued the general opinion in the third race for twoyearolds that he is a youngster of stake caliber masquerading as a selling plater This also applies to Kniield which scored in the other twoyearoldsDavid race for twoyearolds David Dunhip acquired Tule Carsons fast two yearold ITakahira at private sale after the fifth race today todayT T i McGinnis was promptly on hand to boost the winner Enticld which Was entered to be sold for 500 The wit was tiually knocked down to his bid of 1100 Wood ford Clay tlie owner protested the sale claiming that Judge McDowell overlooked the protecting bid of trainer Brooks which was made before Kniield was knocked down to McGinnis No oflicial protest had been filed with the stewards up to the time of their departure from the track They did however conduct a brief investigation into the Star Shoot youngsters sudden and marvelous improvement as compared with his preceding race and it developed that his customary equipment of blinkers which he wore today with such astounding results had been left off on Tuesday when he ran his bad race raceWith With the exception of Brighton Beach all the racing associations up to Jamaica and Aqueduct have practically decided to run a majority of their stakes if not all and it is almost a sure tiling that the two endoft lieseason meetings will fall in line in that respect if there is the slightest prospect of their breaking anywhere near even on the propo ¬ sition Consequently the sport appears in much bet ¬ ter condition than it did a fortnight ago Jesse agoJesse IxMvisohn is speeding the summer at the farm owned by J B Brady situated about thirty miles from the New Jersey coast coastDr Dr Sayior the track veterinarian was given charge of the horse Disaster after his race of yesterday but found no evidence of doping dopingIt It is an unusual occurrence to have two bleeders in one nice but that is what happened in the last race at Brighton Beach today the horses St Joseph and Crack Shot l oth pulling up with hemorrhages from the nostrils nostrilsKarl Karl G a wonderfully improved threeyearold won an Impressive victory in the longdistance rare last on the card The time 2OG was fast and the company behind him included Trash and Juggler Many Betting Indictments Returned.: Twenty-Two Arrested Men Arraigned in a Brooklyn Court and Plead Not Guilty. GREAT TEST CASE THROUGH CAVANAGH Commencement of One is Likely to Come If Former Betting Manager Is Indicted New York July 10 The calling of John Cavuuagh and his assistants before the grand jury makes it plain that an attempt Is being made by Governor Hughes and his direct aides to prove connection be ¬ tween Cavanagh the former manager of the betting ring and the race track owners who according to the statement of acting District Attorrey Elder have received a revenue from bookmakers for the privilege of doing business at the track trackCavanagh Cavanagh declares that he has never sold privileges to bookmakers or anybody else and that the sale of advance Information is strictly a private business venture The advance Information has been sold to all persons who wished to get the names oC the Jockeys and starters ten minutes before they were publicly posted The slips have also been handed to the newspapers to facilitate the sending of re ¬ ports from the track Cavanagh never has received u salary from the race tracks for conducting affairs in the betting ring He was permitted to sell sta ¬ tionery to lxx kmakers and others before the new law was passed It was also his privilege to gather the advance information which has grown into a profitable business businessCavanagh Cavanagh has repeatedly stated that the racing associations have never received one dollar of the profits accruing from his privileges in the ring ringIt It Is likely that Cavanaghs indictment will make the grand test case against the HartAgnew law He will probably be charged under that law with aiding and abetting bookmaklng and gambling on the metropolitan race tracks tracksThere There is sharp demand here that a real test case be started at once A writer in the Telegraph de ¬ fines public opinion as it is applied to the racing situation in this way wayIt It is due the Jockey Club from itself and it is due the lovers of racing from the Jockey Club that a radical test be made of the law Governor Hughes forced through the legislature This test was ex ¬ pected immediately upon the signing of the statute and its taking effect It should not be delayed delayedAttorneys Attorneys for the Jockey Club and lawyers in general in proportion of seven out of ten assert the Invalidity of the Hughes law for the prevention of racing They baee their argument on the In ¬ formality the illegality of the election of Senator Wallace who took the deceased Franchots place Here is a vital law point in dispute with the courts open for its final fcettlement fcettlementJust Just by way of settlement of a debatable ques ¬ tion the entire matter should be gone through In au upper court The Jockey Club is the body upon which devolves the duty of testing the law The Jockey Club rules govern racing and racing men therefore the Jockey Club should assure itself that the statute laws affecting the turf are legally enacted It Is possible the Jockey Club is awaiting until after the political conventions before making the supreme test of the virtue of this Hughes law I have heard It suggested that none will be made until after the nominees are decided upon by the parties anfl bosses and handed put to the waiting elector Notes Of The Turf.
