CANADIAN BREEDING BUREAU FLOURISHES Ten More Horses To Be Distributed Through tha Dominion This Month MonthMontreal Montreal Que September 3 Colonel McLaiiRh Hn of Medicine Hat has been appointed secretary of the Canadian National Bureau of Breeding for Alberta The colonel is a man of wide experience in the breeding of horses and was especially selected by the war office in London when it was decided to send a inau to the Canadian northwest to make a final effort at the improvement in the breed of cavalry horses He will remain in Alberta for a year and a half at least and will devote most of his time to the work of securing good mares and cross ¬ ing thoroughbredThe them with the thoroughbred The National Bureau says Colonel McLaughlin in his letter accepting the secretaryship for Alberta has arrived at a most opportune time This pro ¬ vince and Saskatchewan have been overrun with Clydes and the result is that the market has been glutted There are just about enough lighter mares however to commence the breeding of a saddle and cavalry type and the conditions for developing such foals Is unsurpassed The main objection hereto ¬ fore of the farmer who is asked to bring his mares to a thoroughbred stallion has been that he has not been sarc of getting a suitable price for the foal in a country where work horses are most in demand The war otHce 1 am sure will change this and will make it worth the farmers while to go in for the halfbred With a market secured the rests should be a matter of work and business sense Colonel senseColonel McLaughlin is ready at once to place sev ¬ eral stallions in comfortable quarters on Alberta forms and these will be sent to him from the head ¬ quarters of the bureau in Montreal The names oC the stallions selected will be given in a few days None but superior thoroughbreds will be sent to tho west An effort will be made to get a cheap rate of transportation from the railways as It Is easy to see that they will get their revenue when the remounts seaboardDeleanta are being shipped back to the seaboard Deleanta will be presented to the bureau as soon as his racing days are over and Botanist will also probably close his career in the national stud studT T F Ryan organizer of the bureau expects to place ten stallions before the end of September LieutenantColonel Ashrnead is secretary for Que ¬ bec Oeorge Carruthers of Winnipeg Is secretary for Manitoba H J P Good of Toronto Is secretary for Ontario and Colonel McLaughlin secretary for Alberta Seattle Favorites Much In Eclipse.
