LIVELY AT SHEEPSHEAD BAY FINE STAKE RACING BIG ATTENDANCE AND MUCH BIDDING FEATURES OF THE DAY Firestone Takes the Omnium Handicap in Track TrackRecord Record Time Harrigan Wins tho thoGolden Golden Rod Stakes New York September 7 Thomas II Williams PPlendid threeyearold Firestone won tlie twenty fourth renewal of the Omnium Handicap at Sheeps liead Bay today defeating a quintette of genuine vraeks Doraute Royal Tourist Far West and Tony Bonero in a common canter and incidentally smashing the track record for the distance of the race one mile and a furlong by oneIifth of a second Firestone got away absolutely last on the Inside but so dazzling was his speed that it was a Jiiere moment before be bud established a command ¬ ing lead over the others The colt fairly flew over the ground and before half of the journey was tra versed his strenuously imrsniug opponents began to whow signs of legweariness and in at least the two instances of Far West and Tony Bonero abandoned the pursuit From the beginning of the stretch turn until the linish line was passed Firestones jockey wus busily engaged in alternately tugging at the lines and looking back at tlie striving horses and riders iu bis rear For the cuppr track conditions overywhcre and the particularly diflicult going next the inner mil which enforced running far out in the middle of the track as well as for the supreme vase in which lie won Firestones achievement today deserves to rank with the best of the meeting The time of the race in view of tlie unfavorable stale of the course following the heavy rains of the night before seemed also unbelievable and jockey Butler was hardly able to credit it itFirestone Firestone was only galloping easily and wanted to run away with inc I took a hard pull on him right after I got into the lead and kept waiting for some of the others to come along and make the Dace if they wanted to When finally none of Them showed near me after what seemed the longest kind of wait I 4got anxious and began to wonder what had become of such awfully fast horses as Tony Bonero and Royal Tourist I then looked back and had to laugh They all seemed to lie standing still BO I commenced to pull Firestone up JJi is certainly the fastest horse I ever rode The rodeThe Omnium Handicap is an old fixture first run Vor iu 1SS5 Its history since IIOO is given below Y ar Winner AWt
