The Latonla track has been packed so hard by -lutomoblle racing that the track superintendent Is hoping for ti good soaking rain to lit it for the thoroughbreds. The American jockey. Harrv Michaels, who has been riding in Chill for several years, was seriously hurt at Santiago last Saturday, owing ito his mount in a race falling. Miss Alert was scratched from the first race at Belmont Park Monday for the reason that she had fallen so lame In a work-out in the morning that it was feared she had broken down. It is doubtful if he can be raced again tills year. One result of the Whltuey-Duryea sale of Tuesday is the addition of such excellent race horses as Westbury. Royal Tourist. Fancy. Sandpiper, The Vicar and Strike Out to the big list already booked for a campaign over the California tracks. The running of the Australian Steeplechase of this year at Caulficld was attended with numerous accidents, including the deaths of the horses Cardinal and Maine, and injuries of severity to jockeys Ryan and Burn. The race is over a four-mile course and was won by Nigel, by Paddock Wydgel, carrying 151 pounds. It is of the value of $7,000. and was run in 7:59, by far the fastest Australian record at the distance In steeplechaslng. Of its stakes which closed last spring the Empire City Racing Association reserved for Its fall meeting, which is scheduled for October 19 to 24. inclusive, the following events: The Tarrytown Stakes, three-year-olds and over, one and one-sixteenth miles. $2,000 added: Clark Memorial Handicap, three-year-olds, three-quarters of a mile. 82,000 added: Arrow Stakes, threeyear-olds and over, selling, three-quarters of a mile. $1,800 added.
