NO. 271. CHICAGO, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 1908. PRICE 5 CENTS Muddy Track at Latonia: Weather Brings Discomfort but Attendance and Racing Continue Good MUDDY TRACK AT LATOMA. i WEATHER BRINGS DISCOMFORT BUT ATTENDANCE AND RACING CONTINUE GOOD. Merrick and Marmorean Win for Backers of Favorites Dr. Mayer. Maid Militant and Gold Treasure Surprise. Cincinnati, O.. November 10. Heavy. chilling weather and a muddy track detracted from interest iii Latonia racing today. A fair crowd, however, was on hand and, as a majority of those present believed in their ability to pick the mud runners, the speculation was lively on most of the races. Scratches were numerous, but a bis entry list sent liberal fields to the post in all of the races except the fourth, which had but four starters. Two heavily supported favorites, Marmorean anil Merrick, won and three outsiders. Dr. Mayer. Maid Militant and Gold Treasure. This latter trio were all strongly fancied and Hold Treasure in particular carried the investments of a smart coterie of paddock operators, so that the books did not lay up much on the day's transactions. The fourth race, a high-priced selling affair, seemed like it ought to be a sift to Merrick, about which short prices were eagerly accepted. Milam's .sprinter got home in front handily, but Cloisteress raced in elose enough contention to make the result in doubt to the last hundred yards. This mare comes within the prescribed pony standard and is the smallest thoroughbred in training here. She displayed excellent mud running ability and hung on gamely with Merrick throughout a long, hard stretch drive. The second race, for which Marmorean was the choice, brought out under the conditions a moderate lot of mares and fillies, of which the daughter of Cesarion. revelling in the going, proved herself to be much the best. She was outrun early, but after Miss Felix and Europa had tired under stress of the early pace, she came on at the end to win easily. The defeat of Quagga in the fifth race by Maid Militant was a hard jolt for the favorite ibackers. and enabled bookmaker Fontelieu to make one of the largest winnings recorded at this meeting1. His commission of 1.000 averaged about S to 1. He also laid liberally against Quagga. On the strength of her recent good running Sorrel Top was most fancied to win the third race, but iio-Ver seriously threatened the winner. Snake Mary. The opening race enabled (Dr. Mayer to graduate from the maiden ranks. He showed a good perform- nee in racing Killiugton into defeat and standing the final hard drive. Jockey Brannon sustained an injury to bis foot while riding Bonart in the fourth race and had to cancel his engagements for the remaining two races. Pat Dunne today decided to ship his string of twelve racers to Santa Anita for the meeting there. George C. Dennett will also send three horses to the same track, including his fast sprinter. Ethon. G. H. Holle's consignment of twelve horses will lie shipped to Oakland on Sunday next. Vic Britton disposed of The Shaughraun this afternoon to J. V. Strode for $400. Oroonoka was sold for $150 to W. Lr. Hatchett. acting for C. Smith. Fred Gerhardy expects that ten carloads of horses ; will be shipped immediately at the close of this meeting to New Orleans, from which point they will be transferred by boat to Havana. A representative of the Jockev Club will superintend the shipment and look after the bonding through the Havana custom house. Jamaica Track May Disappear JAMAICA TRACK MAY DISAPPEAR. New York. November 10. It is practically a foregone conclusion that the Jamaica race track will I be sold In the near future and cut up into building lots. The land is owned by the Ryder estate and I was leased six years aso for a long term to the ' .Metropolitan Jockey Club. W. H. Reynolds, the ' president of the club, obtaining an option for the ultimata purchase of the plant. The Long Island Real Estate Company has made an offer for the land, it was said yesterday, and the race track stockholders have practically decided to give up their lease. As the Metropolitan Jockey Club kept no reserve fund but paid dividends on the full profits of each meeting, it would be impossible to conduct racing at a loss in future without assessing the stockholders. When the Metropolitan Jockey Club leased the property plans were drawn on an elaborate scale for buildings and a track that would compare favorably with those of the other racing associations under the control of the Jockey Club. Probably the finest clubhouse In the country was constructed, together with a steel grandstand seating 8,000 persons and a field .stand with room for 5.000 more. The betting ring, as large as any in America, was so well appointed that there was room .for 200 bookmakers around the four sides. The track was the only cause for fault-finding, for the reason that it was kite shapekl, with two sharp turns and a short Jiomestretch. The lawns were so broad and sloping Ihat probably 20.000 spectators could nave seen the racing standing up. The leading stockholders are Timothy D. Sullivan. Patrick H. McCarren. Eugene Wood. W. H. Reynolds. Edward Burke. George Considlne and others identified with the turf. Jamaica has always been called "Sullivan's track," although "Big Tim." it Is said, does not !hold a controlling interest. In huilding this plant it was estimated that $750,000 was expended, all of which has been recovered in six .successful seasons. The spring meeting this year aietted more than S7S.O0O profits, of which. 820.000 was lost on the fall session of five days. The Jamaica track is on the old Springfield branch of the Long Island Railroad at Locust Avenue station. It is about two miles from the Jamaica station, ou the main line. Since the track was built a township has sprung up in its vicinity, and the value of property has greatly increased. Santa Anita Stakes Fill Well SANTA ANITA STAKES FILL WELL. I Los Angeles. Cal.. November 10. The Santa Anita gtake entries which closed at twelve tonight show a larger list than that of last iyear. The chief nominator is Phil Chinn with 72 entries: then comes R. F. Carman with 40 and J. J. Walsh with 17. All the events have been well patronized. A field of at least ten is expected to face the harrier in the Pomona Handicap Thanksgiving Day. which is the big opening race. Many of the 700 horses now at the track are well advanced, probably owing to the splendid condition of the course in the last ten days. It is as good, safe and fast now as it will be at any time during the racing season, The latest arrivals are Henderson & Hogan. W. S. j 1 Williams, W. V. Conran, J. A. Bennet and Ed Al-' vey. Archie Zimmer and a number of other easterners now racing at Latonia are expected to ship here from there at the end of this week. Barney Schreiber. who was to arrive here last might, "telegraphed manager Gardner from Bar-5tow that he would continue on to San Francisco, fihis sudden change of plans has probably been precipitated by the fact that C.v Myrlck. a big local poolroom operator, is now in San Francisco awaiting the arrival of George Rose. Owing to some misunderstanding between Myrick and the management, iMie former threatens, it is reported, to keep his ipoolroom open all winter. The trouble centers around the dollar books at the track, in which My-a-lck was largely interested last year. It Is reasonably expected that when Rose, Schrei-,ber and Myrlck meet in San Francisco the threatened trouble will be amicably settled. Montgomery Defeats Fast Neva Lee: Oakland Racing Draws the Usual Big Crowd-Barney Schreiber's Surprising Indiana News i I ' ' MONTGOMERY DEFEATS FAST NEVA LEE. Oakland Racing Draws the Usual Big Crowd Barney : Schreiber's Surprising Indiana News. San Francisco. Cal.. November 10. Sewell. at odds-on. captured the Fieldwlck Handicap from an , opposing iiuiirtette of fast sprinters at Oakland to- . day and did it so easily as to suggest an almost invincible career during the rain and mud of the coming winter season of racing in California. The , four-year-old son of Cesarion. however, pulled up very lame and his usefulness on the turf may end with this afternoon's brilliant effort. Jockey Pow- ers rode Sewell admirably and was the recipient of liberal applause by the big and enthusiastic crowd of racegoers present. Shilling, the only other high- class jockey now riding here, distinguished himself even more conspicuously by guiding another prohibitive favorite in Montgomery to victory in the closing condition race at one mile and seventy yards. The midreth horse, which was the medium of one of his owner's characteristic plunges, seemed hopelessly beaten for over half the journey, but got up and passed Neva Lee in the last stride of a desperate and punishing stretch sprint. .... The Williams and Rowell stable and their .jockey. Sweet, furnished the third winning favorite of the afternoon in 1'halanx. The other three winners. Ncbulosus, Wap and Sir Brillar. were outsiders m the betting and ridden by Keogh, Taplin and an-dusen respectively. The last named pair are promising apprentices. Weather indications were unfavorable, but had no deterrent effect on the attendance. Two men distinguished in the racing world, east and middle west, F. I). Weir and Barney Schreiber. arrived today and were at the track. The horses belonging to the first named gentleman are due tomorrow.- I). C. Johnson, F. J. Farrell and h . II. Milden are the owners represented in this consignment of thoroughbreds. Roseben's owner has announced his intention of coming out here shortly for an extended sojourn. Other arrivals were Otto Townsend and Sam Shaen. , , . , Barney Schreiber stated that prospects are good for racing in Indiana next year, that the reformers were soundly beaten in that state at the recent elections. Meetings may be held at the Lakeside. Shellield and Forsythe tracks, all within easy travel of Chicago. , . William Gerst telegraphed Percy W. Treat from Nashville today for stall accommodations for fifteen horses, which he planned to ship to Oakland this W0.""R. Ellison said today that his recently ac quired pair. Royal Tourist and Don Enrique, are "sucker" horses. He also added that the local ring is afraid to loosen up. that it needed a couple of layers like Tom Shaw and George Rose to give it backbone. , , . . . . . Last night the opera house was crowded to repletion with citizens in response to a call of the Business Men's League to discuss petitioning the legislature to exempt Garland County from the operations of the anti-race track law. The meeting was presided over by President Charles N. Rix. who is also president of the Arkansas National Bank. , , ,, , , He stated that business in commercial lines had decreased at least forty per cent, during the last - , . j two years and that the city was facing a serious crisis. The Amis anti-racing law went into effect Itwo years ago. since which time the magnificent plant at Oaklawn has been closed. , 'Many prominent property owners made speeches. The representatives of the reform element were present in numbers and were unanimous, with one exception. In the stand they have taken against racing In this state. Ogden and Disguise, have over $100,000 to their credit through the lleetness and good fortune of their progeny. Of these Hastings is the leader and sure to remain so to the end of this year, making the second time he lias figured as premier sire. Ogden and Disguise are almost equally sure to retain second and third places respectively, but Sain should displace Voter from fourth place in the list. Voter's most effective representatives are now in England or in retirement until next year, while Sain has a useful baud of !i?ns illul daughters actively at work, and may pass the .100,000 line himself lvefore the new year arrives, it would only require the pulling off of a Ktake race or two. helped out with purses, in the Oakland and Santa Anita racing to bring this about, t he complete earnings of tlio representatives of our twenty leading sires in detail and in aggregate up to November 1 arc as follows: ...
