NO. 285. CHICAGO, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1908. PRICE 5 CENTS Feature to Don Enrique: Runs Away from Crack Opponents in Oakland's Thanksgiving Handicap FEATURE TO DON ENRIQUE. RUMS AWAY FROM CRACK OPPONENTS IN OAKLAND'S THANKSGIVING HANDICAP. Tremendous Attendances Marks the Holiday Occasion Roscbcn Warmly Received and t Wins in a Canter. Li?- San Francisco. Csil., November 2i. A big Thanksgiving Day crowd witnessed high-class card decided at Oakland today. Roseben made an impressive debut oit the California track in the third race. 'The ring took unwarranted liberties with "The Bis Train" in Hie betting, steadily advancing prices until be rencltcd even 'money. A reaction left 4 to 5 on offer at the close. Roseben appeared trained to the hour when going to the post. lie was mobbed continuously from the. time he appeared on the track until Dast the clubhouse, so intense anil eager -was the curiosity on every hand to see the wonderful horse all had heard so much about. The lucrative price wis chiefly due to Ellison's misguided plunge on his entry. J. O. Core. It was only an exercise Kallop lor IDavid Johnson's celebrate! meal ticket to beat his moderate opposition at even weights. In the first low strides he established a commanding lead and thereafter almost pulled Holmes out of his saddle while running in the remarkably fast time of 1:10.? over the difficult Futurity course. By the time of the decision of the rich .Thanksgiving Handicap the thirty-one layers were hopelessly insufficient to handle the business on the big race. The crowd had swelled to tremendous proportions and many intending bettors were unable to penetrate the layers' inelosure. The Held was reduced by Lawrence 1 Daley's withdrawal to six starters. Dorante was the storm center of speculation from the beginning, backed down from an opening of 2 to 1 to 7 to 5. There was mild support only for the Ilildroth pair and seemingly none at all for Ellison's or Astronomer. It appeared that ovcrylwdy at the track had a wager on Dorante. taking for granted he could run well in the deceptive going. It proved a serious handicap. as IDon Enrique, despite a poor start and excessive early use to make up lost ground, easily held the favorite safe when the test rami1. Tony Faust lasted in front just seven furlongs at a terrilie pace with Royal Tourist. Don Enrique and Dorante all in. forward pursuit. The first named was finally anchored in the deep inside going when looming up ai menacing contender in the last furlong. Montgomery meanwhile was a hopeless trailer and unable to raise a respectable gallop. Ilildreth's horses, while seriously handicapped by poor jockeys, seemed both unfit. Koerner was unable to get anything telling out of Montgomery and .McCarthy was too weak to keep Tony Faust together at the end of seven furlongs, when lie surrendered Vpiiekly and was shalllcd to the rear so suddenly that the spectators thought the horse had broken down. It was jockey Butler's first success in his new em Dloycr's colors, and Ellison gave him $500 for winning the race. Worth $1,900 net. The owner beforehand was supremely confident of victory and said he had won one of the largest bets of his turf career. The remaining races brought out moderate class horses, with one exception, under selling conditions. Their running was replete with sensational upsets. It legan with the first success of tho meeting for A. G. Blakeley's Oowen, he leading eleven two-year-olds home. Mike Askeim. quoted at CO to 1, spreadeagled his opponents in the second. Magrane. even money favorite, broke down hopelessly at the end of half of the journey. Fulletta. a notorious sulker. ordinarily slow as a huckster's horse and nearly left, passed the favorites at will on the backstrctch. beating them off at the end. Outside of Butler and Walsh, riding honors went to inexperienced, but promising riders of the Kebmidt. Taplin and Holmes kind. The weather was perfect. Healthy Appearing Purchases HEALTHY APPEARING PURCHASES. Lexington. Ky., November 20. William Garth, the Virginia horseman, spent the day with .T. E. Madden at Hamburg Place and bought the following nine yearlings, which will be shipped to Mr. Garth at Warrenton in a day or two: Bay colt, by Galore Busy Maid: bay colt, by Galore Galea ; bay filly, by Galore Lacrimea: brown or black filly, by Galore Linda Lee; brown filly, by Yankee Ivory Be.lls: chestnut filly, by Yankee Partridge: brown filly, by Yankee Unsightly; chestnut filly, by Og-den Drama; chestnut colt, by Resolute II. Love Note. It is evident from this purchase that tho successful Virginian' is not looking for any worse times on the turf than prevailed this year. The dams of these youngsters are all young mares and the majority of them were good winners. H. Eugene Leigh left here tonight for Cincinnati, where he will remain until Sunday and thence to New York to sail December 0 for France. The horses Leigh bought will be shipped to New York Sunday. Leigh will take Robert Shannon, brother of John Shannon and the late Tom Shannon to France with him. Young Shannon has had some experience as a trainer and Leigh is satisfied that he will make good abroad. It may be that John Ferriss. Jr. will cross the pond with Leigh to remain until February. A. L. Klrby left here tonight with Romp. Fair Messenger and three others bought during the week. This will make thirty-six head ho will have In training for himself and Rome Resness at Memphis. The shipment from Latonia to the Tennessee city will be in ii do next week. Frank Respess returned to Cincinnati with' Klrby. Algernon Dalngcrfleld. assistant secretary of the Jockey Club, Is here with. Mrs. Dalugerfwld for a visit to their parents. 'Major Foxhall A. Dainger-field of Castleton and Colonel Henry T. Duncan, former mayor of Lexington. Edward Corrigan did mot go to New Orleans to attend the conference with reference to racing in that city, lie is too busy settling up the sale of his horses. He had not been advised as to what had been done up to the time of his departure for the farm tonight. There is a rumor afloat that James B. Hagglu is contemplating the sale of about 200 of the Elmen-dorf thoroughbreds here in December. It is likely that there will be some decision in the matter in the next two or tluee days. Promising Opening at Santa Anita: Nearly 10,000 Spectators Witness Restigouche's Success in the Pomona Handicap PROMISING OPENING AT SANTA ANITA. Nearly 10,000 Spectators Witness Rcstigouche's Success in the Pomona Handicap. Los Angeles. Cal.. November 2G. The second year's racing opened auspiciously at Santa Anita Park with an estimated attendance of almost 10,000. After the steady rain of Wednesday night, the clouds broke this morning and the afternoon, though somewhat cooler than usual, was not unpleasant. Many of the smart set from Los Angeles and Pasadena were present and the grandstand was filled to repletion. At least 1200 new faces were seen among the crowd, most of them being followers of the New Orleans races heretofore. The New York and Chicago contingent this year is unusually heavy. Tho Pomona Handicap, with a net value to the winner of $1.770l went to Sam Jlildroah's crack gelding. Restigouche. which was easily best in a field of nine. He hiad little difficulty in racing Magazine into subjection an the first quarter, and the rest of the journey Was a big canter. He was smartly backed by New Yorkers here, many of whom thought be should have been an odds-on favorite. Phil Chinn brought off a good thing in the second race, which was won by his good two-year-old. Joe Gaiteus. Mr. Chinn passed the good thing around to his friends, many of whom won handsomely. The track, though somewhat muddy and holding, dried out fast during 'the afternoon and should be in good condition tomorrow. Nineteen books were on and most of them were made by eastern pencilers. George Rose, as usual, set the prices. The betting was brisk, with the public having by far the better of the day's argument. Among the visitors were Senator J. T. McCall of New York, a friend of Governor Hughes and commissioner to the Alaska-Yukon-Pacitie Exposition. Mr. McCall was highly pleased with the beautiful plant and keenly enjoyed the afternoon's' racing. Departures for Cuba Yesterday DEPARTURES FOR CUBA YESTERDAY. New Orleans. La.. November 20. C. L. Jones, of the firm of Smith & Perry, who are financing the Havana meeting, arrived from Galveston. Texas, where he went to superintend the shipment of horses to Cuba, but found that the ships leaving Galveston were not prepared 'to handle that sort of business. The stalls .on the ships were very small and the accommodations- not nearly so good as could he obtained on the boats leaving New Orleans. He imme-ditely notified horsemen of thees conditions. A big consignment lot the horses quartered at City Park, besides those coming from Texas, will be shipped on the Excelsior, leaving port tonight. The Texas consignment wilt consist of Melange. Hand-me-down. Kingthorpe. Kitty Mason, Lady Mnritana. Elder. Miller Boy. Autumn Maid. Chief Hayes. Momentum. Moyea. 'Miss Topsy. John A. Munro, IConite. Bitter Man. Reside. Reticent. Fernando. Malta and several yearlings. Jack Baker, who shipped to Cuba from New York, cabled track that the outlook for a successful meeting looked very bright and that the plant, was first-class. Edward Garrison. W. C. (Father Bill) Daly. Jule Garson and W. O. Scully have asked for stable room at the Almaudares course and will send their horses down from 'New York some day this week. The following is a partial list of the jockeys who will take part in the Havana meeting: Kennedy. Troxler, A. IMartin. Ilanlon. Hinchcllffe, Warren. Walker, Pickens. Hogg. Ott. F. Burton. Brannon. Muleahey. Griffin, A. Burton. Glassner. Young. J. Fogg and Lawrence. Thoroughbreds at Low Prices THOROUGHBREDS AT LOW PRICES. Lexington, Ky., November 2G. The stallions Royal Stag and Ed Farrell, 2;? broodmares and II weanlings, belonging to Grant Hugh Browne, of the Brownleigh Park Stud, New York, were sold by auction at horsemen's headquarters last night for a total of $1,645, a fraction less than $45 per head. Foster Helm, at whose GrassraCro Farm these horses have been since last January, has a bill of $3,0G0 against Mr. Browne for their keep. Royal Stag "was sold to W. Dolloway. of Ada. Mich., for $25. and James Riley got Ed Farrell for $30. Tho majority of the weanlings were sold to Charles Thompson for about $40 per head. O. H. Cbrnault bought six of the youngest marcs. Bayardo Great Derby Favorite BAYARD 0 GREAT DERBY FAVORITE, Bayardo, the unbeaten two-year-old ofvthe English turf, finished up his brilliant season with a decisive victory for the Dewhurst Plate in the Newmarket Houghton meeting. Danny Maher had the mount on the colt and. after waiting on Sir Daniel Cooper's crack filly. Perola. for three furlongs, the American let Bayardo have his head a little and the young champion came away with a grand burst and won by three lengths. It was his final race for the year 1008. The race was worth $G,G35 this brings the colt's total for seven races to the sum of $04,017.50. A couple of weeks previously Bayardo won tho Middle Park Plate by a length from the filly. Vivid, and she. too, la owned by Sir Daniel Cooper. Many of the critics thought Bayardo was extended, while not a few held different ideas. In the Dewhurst Plate Bayardo carried 131 pounds to 126 on Perola. Bayardo Is small in stature and not much to look at, but is a wonderful mover, and Is seen to the best advantage when galloping at full speed. At the recent Derby meeting some future betting on the Epsom Derby of 1009 was indulged in and Bayardo was backed at 31 to 1 to win and even money that he would finish In the first three. It seems an absurdly short price six months in advance. Bayardo's pedigree was published in Dally Racing Form October 28. El Paso Meeting and Officials EL PASO MEETING AND OFFICIALS. El Paso, Tex.. La., November 2G. Before an estimated attendance of COO persons, the Louisiana Driving and Racing Association began today its advertised ninety-davs winter meeting. While the attendance was somewhat of a disappointment to the managers, they feel hopeful that there will be a gradual increase. There was little dilliculty in placing a wager if speculatively inclined, for, while considered "individual" betting, it was nothing less than hand-bookinaking, a number operating during the afternoon. Mayor Behrman, Chief Inspector O'Connor and Prosecuting Attorney-Elect Adams were early ,vis-itors to the track but, finding no evidence of violations of the Locke law, withdrew and also ordered a score of hlueeoats from the grounds that had been ordered for duty to enforce the law. While a real racing air is lacking, it appears that under the present system of operating at a small expense, the sport can be maintained without loss to the management. Should the authorities hold aloof as they did today the "individual" system of betting will bo soon familiarized and bettors will have little dilliculty in placing their money. The prices quoted this afternoon were extremely short. Jack Loycano, who is manager of the plant, stated that considering the many counter attractions the attendance held out encouragement as pointing to buccops for the meeting. Close observers in attendance -were of the opinion that racing as conducted today would prove a failure, and predict that there will be a shut-down at the plant within a Aveek. Rome Respess was among today's visitors and witnessed the running of the handicap won by his cast-off. Copperfleld. Jockey "Tiny" Moore, injured last year by being struck by a street car. was awarded 5,000 damages yesterday. He sued for 25.000. Little Meeting at Petersburg LITTLE MEETING AT PETERSBURG. Petersburg, Va.. November 2J. Everything is In readiness for the special race meeting to be given here next Saturday. David Dunlop. of Cog-gin's Point, who is the prime promoter of this enterprise, has engaged Riverside track and his harrows are putting it in order. Mr. Dunlop guarantees the seven purses, six for mnners and one for trotters, to be decided and has stable accommodations for from 50 to 100 horses. Some of the campaigners, with which patrons of the eastern turf are familiar, that will take part in the regular events are Wayside. West Over, Rec-tortown. Kankakee. Collateral, Broadway Girl. Jack-wood. Clovercrest. Essex II.. Cousin Kate and Ala-uiansor. Many prominent turfmen from Maryland and Virginia will attend the meeting, among whom the following are well known in racing circles throughout the country: Gwyn Tompkins. James Evans, Arthur Hancock. Dion K. Kerr. Henry T. Oxnard. Colonel Robert Neville. William and Woods Garth. Among 'the Now Yorkers who have signified their intention of coming down to witness the sport are Senator Christopher Sullivan, M. Lynch. Jay O'Brien. Frank Herold. It. Angarola. Frank Gardner and Jack McCMnnis. Frank Herold Will do the starting and will use the flag in the old-fashioned way. Speedy Work at Santa Anita SPEEDY WORK AT SANTA ANITA. News from the training quarters at Santa Anita Park speaks well of the condition of horses in training for the long winter season. Some of the best and most recent work sent out from the track shows that Orbicular, which had been racing on tup Texas tracks, turned three-quarters in 1:17. going easily: Senator Beckham went a mile in 1:45, John Lyle a mile in 1:42?. The Sultan a half In 48-. Dorainus Arvi and Old Timer a half in 47g. live-eighths iu nOi, three-quarters in 1:13 and seven-eighths in 1:27 . Details of Recent Corrigan Sale DETAILS OF RECENT CORRIGAN SALE. The passing away of Edward Corrigan's big breeding establishment, like that of. the. greater Me-Grathiana Stud, illustrates the privations brought to the Kentucky breeders by Governor Hughes of New York. It has been said that both were, under the circumstances, good sales. But the fact remains that had the Hughes crusade never occurred, the horses disposed of in the two sales would have brought three times as much as they did, and per-liaps more. McGee. a brilliant race horse and promising young sire, sold for but a paltry $1,300. whereas under the conditions prevalent two years back It is almost a surety 'that he would have been considered cheap at $7,500. Many similar cases might be. picked out from the following complete list. of. prices paid for the Corrigan broodmares and weanlings. Summary in full: McGee. b. b, 8, by White Knight Remorse: C. W. Matchtulla met early inside interference, but made up ground and finished gamely. Palo Alto, after strenuous forward pursuit, finished in deep going and tired badly. Rosamo broke slowly and closed up steadily. Joe Rose, away slowly, improved his position steadily and will improve. Charles Ellison Is conlident that his speed marvel. Royal Tourist, will hang np a new American record for three-quarters of a mile before the winter ' is over. Early Wright's three-year-old gelding. Maltbie. of which great tilings were expected this winter, has been thrown out of training through a sudden attack of illness. John Bullman has been working hard to get into riding form for the Santa Anita season. Bu.llman is a masterly rider of two-year-olds and by no means a has been in jockeyship. Charles Rub, formerly well known in racing circles in the east, is seriously ill in the Post Graduate Hospital in New York, where he underwent an operation a few days ago. Jockey J. King, who has been riding at Oakland since the opening of the coast season, has signed a contract to ride for T. P. Childs. who will race his horses at Sauta Anita Park. Last week a record, was established by the "mu-tuels" at Maisons-Lallitte, France, when UC.901 francs for every ten Invested fell to the lot of those who supported the chances of Etheree. Taylor George has been showing some fast work over the &mta Anita track, only recently doing six furlongs in 1:13 j. Mintia, another from 11. T. OITutt's barn, reeled off three-quarters in 1:1-14 under restraint at the end. Jockey Eddie Dugan, when his suspension expires January 1. will resume riding for S. C. Hildreth. to whom he is engaged until March. 1909. when lie will sail for England. Harry Payne Whitney will have first call on his services for one year beginning Mareli 15. Little remains of what was once the famous old Brighton Beach track. The field stand has been torn down and laborers arc busily engaged in ripping up the brick lawn which extended from the stand to the fence and on which many race-goers in the past witnessed stirring linishes. Sand and soil have been carted in such quantities that two streets, where formerly the steeplechase horses raced, are now nearly completed. Spirit of Racing in Ireland SPIRIT OF RACING IN IRELAND. Racing in Ireland has features which Vigilant, of the London Sportsman, found pleasing on a recent visit to Leopardstown course, judged by the following comment, which includes some reference to Mr. Richard Croker's ltbodora: "Personal experience has taught nie that, granted favorable conditions as regards weather, nothing is more enjoyable than a visit to an Irish nice meeting. The natives are more enthusiastic than arc the turfites on this side of St. George's Channel, and more genuine in their love of the sport for its own sake, apart from the gambling interests inseparable from the game. People do not appe.ir to lie mooning about in seareh of tips, tho business in the ring is much more open and liberal in character and. as it seems to me. there is far less cliuuism than is prevalent at home. Everything works smoothly, thanks to the admirable management by ellieient and courteous officials, and as concerning visitors from England the.v cannot do enough to insure their comfort, convenience and enjoyment. By the merest chance it was my good' fortune to be present on Saturday at the conclusion of the Hat racing season at Leopardstown. and I must confess to having been delighted at all I saw. The weather was perfect, and there was brilliant company present to see the curtain fall on a remarkably pleasant tinale to the Hat racing season. Among others present was Mr. Richard Croker, from whom I was pleased to learn that Rbodora's case is by no means hopeless, though she injured one of her tendons badly in a winding- up gallop preparatory for tho Catnbridgcsliire. for which she had been backed for a very large sum erP money. Her owner has disposed of her yearling relative, which is regrettable, though Dr. McCabe may not think so, as lie now has charge of The Batten, a chestnut colt which is described as doubtfully sired by Lcsterliu or Clonmell. out of Rhoda B."
