Deutschland Defeated by Billy Pullman Anna L. Daley Scores at Kcr First Attempt Adverse Legislation Not Feared. San Francisco. Cal.. November 28. Hon Enrique, recent coiKiucror of tin chief Inrf celebrities in training lien-, including Do'rantc. created a sensation today liy refusinjr to start in the feature race being left standing at tlie, post. Butler rode Klii-son's heavily backed gelding and both liorse anil rider were unready at the barrier. It was a clear case, however, or a sulky horse and this trait, common to his sire's progeny, was betrayed in the favorite's preliminary gallop, (ieneral Thomas McGregor, r. S. A., an honored guest in the press-stand, remarked on Don Enrique's mean looiis when going to the Kst. Despite free use of his whip and spurs. Butler was unable to make him budge for a seemingly interminable time. When he finally got to going, the others were nearly a half mile in the lead. Pursuit therefore was unavailing and he only cantered the journey. Cressina outbroke and outpaced ber four remaining contestants decisively. W. T. Overton. Tony Faust. Frank Flittiior and Miiford ran throughout' in Indian lile and finished as named. Another incident of the running of a line card "was Strike Out's runaway or a mile before the start. His regular rider. Holmes, had been discarded, but lie was too big a handful for the diininu live Upton and went around the track at top speed. A coup would probably have materialized but for this. The victorious debut of Anna L. Daley marked the first appearance of Fred Cook's colors- on the coast in six years. The -winner was a well-hacked public choice and her success very popular in consequence. S'chreiber's Sainvoko was nearly left and failed to get up in :i phenomenal effort. A pair of grand lookers in llaunab Louise and Hosevala participated ami displayed brilliant speed, but were palpably short and will surely reverse this running later on. Deutschland, backed into hot favoritism, succumbed under his his wob'lit to his younger, lightly -weighted opponent, I'.illy Pullman, in the third race. This stallion will soon be racing against a dozen or more of ids progeny. Mr. Schreiber's coining two-year-olds by Deutschland are said to bo wonders. Boas s-prcadeagled bis opposition in the opener, ridden by jockey Alliert Walsh. This lad again distinguished himself in the last race. K. Sullivan also rode two winners. Cressina and Mabel Hollan i'er both froln K. J. Ramsey's stable. Kcogh scored on the resurrected El lord, while I). McCarthy took the remaining 'Winning mount on Hilly Pullman. Glorious weather prevailed. The track was still cuppy and comparatively slow and dillicult. still favorites maintained their ascendancy, accounting for half of the card. Senator Gus Ilartnian, one of the biggest men politically in the state of California, and an out spoken champion of thoroughbred racing and clean sport of all kinds, was a visitor at Oakland this afternoon. The senator said that the coming iegis lature anight possibly, though very improbably, enact a few mild and reasonable restrictive laws governing racing. It is a very line lot of liberal-minded men composing the present senate and assembly, and people in favor of the sport liave positively no fear of adverse legislation. Winter racing in California means millions of dollars to business interests throughout the state every six mouths, besides1 incalculable tienefits derived from the enormous advertising the state derives through its race meetings. Twenty-nine Iooks reported at the new cut-in. Ambrose Dunn and the St. Lonls Club being absentees. All of P. T. '.Cliinn's raters have been shipped south, which leaves W. II. Spence without a stable to train. Give Up at New Orleans GIVE UP AT NEW ORLEANS. New Orleans. La.. November 2S. Racing at the Louisiana Driving and Racing Club's balf-inile track was suspended this afternoon and there will be no further attempt to nice. Manager Jack Loyacano stated that the three-days meeting had cost the club about $10,000. They had put up all purses and other expenses and they would be out that much on the venture. He declared that it was impossible to race in New Orleans under the Locke law with the antagonistic sentiment that exists here. I'licy had believed they could earrv on a ninety-days meeting successfully and had gone to beavv expense in preparation, but the people would not attend without bookmaking and betting features. Therefore, after seeing a few hundred stragglers enter the gate today, where there should have been thousands on a Saturday afternoon, the management threw up the sponge and decided to quit. Most of the horses that were here will lie shipped to El Paso. Texas, although some will go to Havana ami California. William Murray, manager of the El Paso race meeting, is here and he lias secured the bulk of the stock and talent for the western circuit. This puts an end to any attempt at racing in New Orleans this whiter. Neither of the two big tracks will make any effort to open their gates. Route Respess. a large stockholder of City Park, left last night after severay days' conferences here, fully satisfied that it would be impossible to hold any races this year. CREDITABLE RECORD OF A TWO-YEAR-OLD HALF-BROTHER TO M'CHESNEY NEWCASTLE STABLE'S B. G. 2. WISE MASON. BY SEMPR0NIUS MANOLA MASON. For the reason that he is a half brother to McChesney the performances of Wiso Mason were of more Ihan ordinary interest to those Chicagoans who but. a few years back were in the habit of deeming the miglily white-faced chestnut able to cope successfully with apy race horse in the land.. It cannot be said that Wise Mason raced up to the standard of his famous half brother, but he ran well and may show great improvement as a three-year-old. McChesney himself was beaten many times when a two-year-old. running unsuccessfully in nine races before lie finally achieved his first win in a purse race at Hawthorne. He afterwards developed into one of the greatest race horses of bis time and. in the way of a family characteristic, it may be that Wise Mason will emulate his example. He made his debut in a selling race at Brighton P.each, July 17. and ran fourth to Rubia Granda, Lady Selina and Arionette. at live furlongs in 1:03?. In his next attempt be improved over this showing by winning a purse at five and a half furlongs in l:07jU with 110 pounds, defeating Arondack, 101; 0. U. Kid, 102, and two more. Then he ran unplaced nt the same distance to Etberial, Sententious and Ruble, but was unlucky and pocketed. Moving over to the Empire City track, lie won at his first start, defeating (.rania, Arondack, Ragman and ten more at three-quarters of a mile .in l.:12j. a very creditable display of speed. In another purse race at the same track be won from Personal. Tom Hayward and three others, at five and a half furlongs in 1:0S with ease. Then, in the valuable Knickerbocker Handicap, for two-year-olds at about, three-quarters of a mile, he ran fourth to Dick Roller. Erbet and Footpad. He carried 115 pounds to 112 on Dick Roller. 100 on Erbet and 11!) on Footpad and was barely lieu ten out for third place. On the second day of the Gravescnd autumn meeting Fitz Herbert defeated him by a head at five and a half furlongs, run in 1:07J. Madman was third and three more unplaced. In his next race lie defeated The Gardener, County Fair, Dandy Dixon and Mauviette easily at the same distance in 1:07?. Then Footpad, carrying 100 pounds to his 111. beat him by three-quarters of a length in 1:00. with the good colt Fashion Plate, third. At the Aqueduct fall meeting he won his only stake race, the Bellerose. at three-quarters, in which be was first In a cauter in 1:10. with The Gardener second and Spellbound third. Witching Hour and Law I on Wiggins running unplaced. His only other winning race after that was for a purse at Empire City. October 21, for which lie was a 1 to 0 favorite, and won at three-quarters pulled up in l:i:B. witli Garland second and Siskin third. His last race of the year was at Jamaica, October 31, and in this he was second to Waponoca. beaten a length and having up lis pounds to 113 on the winner. La Gloria Sets a New Track Record All Alone Disappoints Admirers Jockey J. Leo Reports for Duty. Los Angeles. Cal., November 2S. A largo and enthusiastic Saturday crowd was present today and was? well repaid for its trip to the course at the foot of the mountains, for the racing was productive of three cracking, close finishes. Secretary Smith presented one of his best cards and, although the lields were comparatively small, they were so well balanced as to furnish exciting sport throughout the afternoon. The event of the day went to W. Walker's three-year-old. Stanley Fay. which was heavily sup ported by (he public. Vox Po:uii set him a merry pace for the first seven furlongs, but here Stanley Fay overhauled him. the two lighting it out under keen urging to the line. Stanley Fay's splemUd gameness stood him in good stead in the closing strides and he got bis head over the winning mark in front. All Alone disappointed a number of easterners in the day's opener by failing to finish inside the money. La Gloria was at her best -today and. generously supported by public and sharpshooters alike, made the others in the last race look cbean. Old Dutiful, the gray that has inn some peculiar races here in the last Tew years, was not allowed to start today. He was not in any condition to race and Judge Hamilton put him on the retired list. Jockey J. Lee arrived this afternoon and will ride hero for F. A. ForsyUho. Today was the second draw-in. nineteen books answering the roll call. They drew in for three days. The speculation was brisk but somewliat light, the books getting an awful drubbing. The horses of the Sobre Vista Stable, property or A. I. Maher's Great Career in England: Lands First in the Jockey List This Year in Wins and Percentage MAHER'S GREAT CAREER IN ENGLAND. Lands First in the Jockey List This Year in Win3 and Percentage. Danny Maher. the American jockey, has completed the most successful year he has had since he began riding in England. The fiat racing season dame to an end yesterday and found Malier at the head of the jockey list. He has scored a total of 131) firsts, including the last race in which lie rode. Although this is the first time that Manor has had the honor of heading the list of English jockeys, except in percentage, it is not because he was not successful in the saddle over there, but rather a lack of opportunity to ride oftener. due to inability to make low weight. Danny Maher rode for the first time in England in September 1900. the mount being, a winning one. Arriving so late in the year gave him only a limited time to prove his ability, but that was soon evi dent. In the short time that remained he rode twenty-seven winners and finished the season witli a percentage of 21.09 and only once since then has it been less. In 1903 Maher was the victim of a motor car accident, the injuries from which caused his life to be despaired of and kept him out of the saddle for many weeks. Still, that year he rode fifty-six winners and had an average of 13.7S. which was the lowest of his career on the English turf. He led the jockeys in matter of percentage four different years and from 1900 to and including 1907. a period of eight seasons, he. earned a general average of 23.92. a remarkable record. Maher rode the winners of many of the oldest fixtures of the English turf, including three Derbys. Maher is very popular with the Uritish turf patrons and his services are always in demand. An American returning from England recently said: "About the only American that seems to get along perfectly in England is iDanny 'Maher. and it is pretty good hotting that Danny is more English now than they are themselves, lie has got along because he is shrewd enough to cater to them and to take up their ways and make them his own. Of course, they like him because ho is capable, too, but it wouldn't be easy to call to mind another instance of the kind." (Maher's winning mounts and percentages for each year from 1900 to 1907. inclusive, are as follows: Winning Year. Mounts. Percent. 1000 ,.. 27 21.09 1901 94 22.4.1 1902 10G 23.50 1903 50 13.78 1904 115 24.89 1905 , 101 24.57 190G -103 29.17 1907 113 20.8S Personal Liberty and New Orleans PERSONAL LIBERTY AND NEW ORLEANS. The Daily States of New Orleans, in commenting on the recent decision handed down by the Appellate Division of the Supremo Court In the case of Melville Collins, charged with a violation of the Hurt-Agnew law. says: "No matter how deeply interesting the value of personal liberty may appeal to the majority that makes up the real ruling jower in every state in our Union, very few in the Crescent City will absorb what the decision of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of the state of New York meant to nearly 100,000 fairly good citizens of that commonwealth. "It was a decision that will have great weight In the endeavors of fair-minded people to check the almost insane efforts of those members of society who meddle with men's rights. "It would appear that various members of legislatures throughout the south and west were made to vote blindly, not only in putting racing out of busl-.ness, but everything else that savored in any way as being within the specula'tive zone. "The decision in the state of New York" shows that it is still of the opinion that the Percy-Gray bill was good law and the Hart-Agnew measure was a sumptuary act. "If "the Hart-Asnew bill as a law is carried to the same body it must decide it unconstitutional, as its verdict In the gerrymander cases in the state of New York made the senate do facto, thereby making Governor Hughes' call for an extra session an usurpation, and an act that that court cannot stultify itself enough to accept. "Or, in other words, while no one denies the right of states to police themselves, the people at large will not allow its servants to dictate to them the curtailment of their personal rights and privileges "Then why. if the people of New Orleans wish to patronize racing, a sport which has been maintained within the environs of the Crescent City for over forty years, should so-called reformers assume that the people who are trying to promote it along lines calling for no transgression of the recently enacted Locke bill are a band of highwaymen? "Perhaps it would have been better If the mile track people had tried to find out the temper of the citizens of Now Orleans, but they did not choose to do so." Turf and Stud in Foreign Lands: Results of the Haggin-Keene Sales at Buenos Ayres English Racing Statistics TURF AND STUD IN FOREIGN LANDS. Results of the Haggin-Keene Sales at Buenos Ayres English Racing Statistics. W. Allison writes in the Sportsman about the Haggin-Keene sales expedition to South America: "It may bo remembered that a short time ago a Kreat deal was written concerning elaborate arrangements made with regard to the shipment of a large consignment of thoroughbred stock by Mr. J. B. Haggin. of New York, for public sale in Buenos Ayres. The consignment, including a number of animals, the property of Mr. James R. Keene. was said to have numbered 100. Mr. Uaggln's own share of the total shipment was about seventy animals, but only fifty-nine lots (comprising seven stallions, seventeen broodmares, and a number of three-year-old fillies, two-year-old fillies, and yearlings) were ottered. The consignment was divided into three separate portions, and sold on the 3rd. 10th, and 14th of October. The aggregate amount realized for the whole of the fifty-nine animals was $40,100, which gives an average of SCSO each, and makes one inclined to doubt whether the shipment has paid the actual expenses. "The first lot offered on October 3 included three stallions and nine broodmares. Amongst the former was Dieudonue, for which John Mackey, acting on behalf of Mr. Haggin. gave $5,000 in England seven years ago. Ampblon's sou. which has a number of winners to his credit in the United States, now fetched 11.000 pesos or $4,Slo. He goes to the stud. Henry Hawkins, where lie will take the place of the recently defunct Le Mat. a son of The Bard. For McChesney. a winner of twenty-june races. Dr. Cobo gave $3.2S0. Amongst the mares. Grand March, bv Goldfinch, topped the list, and was acquired by El Dorado Stud for $1.5.0. "A week later the second portion was disposed of. It was made up of five broodmares and seventeen three-year-old fillies. These animals fared badly, since the five mares altogether only made $l.o00. an average of $270 each. The seventeen fillies only fetched $7,370. an average of $430 each. Amongst them were daughters of Watercress, Goldfinch. Star Rubv. Order. Mimic. Greenan. Toddington. Kinley Mack. WatercoUJr. and Salvator. The poor average Is only another proof of the objection to American blood entertained by South American breeders, for, with one exception, these fillies had real American pedigrees on thedam!s side, and this exception was from an obscurely'-bred English, mare, by Lancastrian, from a daughter of .Donnybrook. her dam by De ' : ' i i ! i , Ruyter. Only one of them beat her in regard to price obtained, and this to the extent of $20 only. "The third portion of the consignment was offered on October 14. It included four stallions (Arkle, Gerolstein, Shapfell and Goldsplnner. a son of Goldfinch): three broodmares (one a daughter of Persimmon), eight two-year-old fillies and eleven year- . ling fillies, all of them by sires mentioned in the foregoing. The total amount realized by these twenty-six animals was $14,270, which gives an average of less than $545 each. The yearling and two-year-old fillies made altogether $9,190. the average being about $510. A daughter of Greenan fetched top price. $1,970, Senor D. J. Atucha bidding that amount for bar. Arkle and Shapfell. which were purchased in England in 1S99 for $12,500 and $2,500 respectively, now made $S25 and $C55. He shares the wholesome conviction of most sportsmen that it Is immoral to attract the smaller public to racing. He is quite aware that racing will always claim the attention of every class, but that the bookmaker is a far better guardian of public ethics than the lottery disguised under the cloak of a mutual operation and appealing, under such a spe'eious denomination to those who would not otherwise have been attracted to a race course. Consequently he has denounced the system embodied, by the "totalizator," and appears to favor the lists where ready money is taken. Books are folioed and signed by a delegate of the Belgian Jockey Club. Certain moral and pecuniary guarantees are required fr"om those to whom they are issued, with a guarantee that the. books provided for them contain a full record of their several transactions and they are liable to be recalled for examination at any moment by the officials of the club. Milton Young Still Owns Many Horses . MILTON YOUNG STILL OWNS MANY HORSES. Lexington. Ky., November 28. When Scarf Pin, the fourteen-year-old daughter of Springbok and Emerald, was knocked down to the bid of Colonel Milton Young for $125 at the Corrlgan dispersal sale Wednesday morning, there was general surprise among the horsemen at the ringside. "Back in the game so soon?" shouted some. "I knew he couldn't stay out of It long," said a voice. "Are you going to take her to the Argentine Republic.'" queried another, and similar inquiries were fired at the Master of McGrathlana in a good-natured vein until auctioneer Easton rapped his hammer sharply upon the box to call attention to another horse In the ring. " That's just a necktie adornment that I've picked up at a bargain." answered Colonel Young. "I guess I might as well tell you now as at anv other time that this isn't the only thoroughbred I own. I bought back forty-seven of those that went through my sale. Including the stallion. Wools-thorpe. because I had an opportunity to pick them up cheaply, and I have rented a barn and a part of the farm that I sold to Messrs. Thomasson & Coons on the Tate's Creek Pike, where I will keep them for the present. What I shall eventually do with them, I do not know; but I am certain that 1 will not take any of them to the Argentine Republic. "I expect to leave for Buenos Ayres about January 1, aud will remain there three or four months, maybe longer. Investigating conditions. If I conclude to locate there, and I think I will. I shall buy a farm and then go to England and spend another six months selecting stallions and mares for my stud in the new place. The mares that I have picked up since the sale are worth much more than they were knocked down for and I can affoTd to hold them as an investment." It will be noted that twenty-six of the thirty-six mares were bred to Cesarion, and it is reasonable to presume that the majority of them are in foal and will produce living colts or fillies. Likewise six of the eleven weanlings are by him. The get of Cesarion have been doing things and they are in demand. The forty-eight head did not cost Colonel Young a great deal more than $10,000 and it is next to a cinch that he will get that back with interest during the coming two years and still have the mares left if he should choose to keep them. The Houston Jockey Club's meeting of twelve days, which came to an end Saturday, November 14, was the most successful one given by that organization when viewedi either from the attendance or racing standpoint. Some 5,000 people .attended the races dally throughout the meeting and speculation was keen and brisk at all times, keeping from twenty to thirty books busy every day. The racing brought about many close and exciting finishes, the duel between First Premium aud Joe Stokes in the Ben Levy Handicap being especially worthy of notice. ' The work of the officials during the meeting was most praiseworthy. The starting of Arthur McKnight was so uniformly good that the public had little chance to find fault, and he left that city with a reputation well earned of being one of the best starters In the country. Hart Dernham'a work as racing secretary has won him many friends among Texas race-goers, his well balanced programs contributing to the many interesting races witnessed during the meeting. The meeting has been singularly free from scandal, due to the strict censorship of Judge Murphy, who has become very popular with the racing people of the south. His punishment of jockey Moriarity. whom lie ruled off the turf tor life for a dishonest ride, while severe. Was just. During the twelve days of racing the Houston Jockey Club distributed $20,000 in- purses, of which the following owners won $300 or more each: Owner. Won. Owner. Won. R. E. Watkins Sl.CSO G. J. His work in the saddle easily eclipsed that of the other lwys taking part in the meeting. He had a mount in nearly every race, sixty-nine in all. riding twenty winners, eleven seconds and eight thirds. Butwell accomplished a very rare feat when he rode eight winners in 'two days, four each day. His presence on the track always .brought forth enthusiastic applause from the Texas race-goers, with' whom he became very popular.
