Rubia Granda Victress in a Heads-Apart Finish of Six Bellwether Wins the Main Race of the Day. f .' San Francisco. CaL, December S. Rain and mini enveloped horses, jockeys and spectators indiscriminately :it Oakland today. Notwithstanding the disagreeable weather conditions extraordinarily good and wholly satisfactory sport developed. The layers were left with clean sheets when Prince Nap 'won the opener. After that well-hacked public choices in traneis. Bellwether. Rubia Granda. iMav Amelia and Warden scored all down the program and the ring was relieved of 'its ready cash. The card was made up of well-balanced overnight races withoat stake features. The fourth and sixth were contested bv a good baud of two-year-olds, while the third brought out !f.0i?leitlf tlll ,K!st 11111(1 runners of the older division. All three races produced satisfactory spectacles. Ilie one at six and a half furlongs for two-vear-olds proved particularly interesting. The finish 'was the closest between six horses ever seen hereabouts, the order being Hubia Granda. I!ou Homme, Madman, twilight Queen. Dr. Ilolzberg and Anna I.. Dalev President Williams' filly ran a remarkable race under Uilliert's inadequate ride and. when she got up to win finally in the very last stride, the big crowd acclaimed her the best of her age and sex in training here. The other attractive two-vcar-old feature was captured by Warden. His victorv w.-u measurably due to .T. Lee's vigorous and hustling ride, the colored rider's exhibition of loekevship being particularly impressive on this occasion. The black and yellow or Thomas II. Williams were also successful on Bellwether, which virtually led his fast opponents for the entire distance of a mile and seventy yards. The sudden improvement shown by Billy Pullman in this race evoked comment. Thomas II. Williams and C. It. Ellison are about to trade Jockeys. Walter Miller -and .T. -Butler, under winter engagements to these two owners, are the ones involved. Johnny Glenn and several other Itookmnkers are planning to go to Buenos Ayres to ply their vocation next spring. George Limlon 5s the latest recruit to the layers' ranks. Thomas QleCreery. formerly trainer for Fred John-win, expects to go to England and train a siring of racers there for nn American- owner next season. J. C Core was cut down behind in his nice and will not start tomorrow. Announcement is made that jockey 1). McCarthy will shortly resume riding at Oakland. This is welcome news to local race-goers, with whom the star lightweight rider was verv popular. Dr. Leggo. Joe Nealon. Jacomo. Ed Davis, horses formerly owned by C. C. MeCanerty. arrived todav from Seattle in charge of Frank Clancv. Two of E. T. Fitzgerald's. Zelina and Mill Song, were included in the shipment. They were also formerly thi property or McCajTertv. It. L. Thomas Light Wool will be shipped to Oak land immediately after his race in .Saturday's stake at Santa Anita. .Mr. Thomas says that he" is goin;. to England in the spring and remain to witness the running of the Epsom Derby, in which his Jockev C. II. ShiUing. will have the mount on Sir Martin, provided the Madden colt starts. .T. I). Miilin has resigned his position as trainer or Frank iTlittner, winner of the Crocker Stakes of last Saturday, and said to be. owned jointly bv a .Airs. McDpnald mid Mike Daly, racing under 'the jioni lie course of the Is Angeles Stable. Six yealings, the property of John Mackev. were sold last night at auction for small priees. Armv otlicers from the -Presidio were buyers. W. P. Fine paid the, highest price. $425. for a bav lillv bv Cano-pus Calora. The average per head was $139.'. A dispatch from Los Angeles says iockev V. Powers will ride in England next season. Leopold de HoHis-child i alleged .to have offered him a retainer of $15,000 through August Belmont. Magazine Beaten by the Start: Heavily Supported, but Practically Left at the Post Dominus Arvi a Crack MAGAZINE BEATEN BY THE START. Heavily Supported, but Practically Left at the Post Dominus Arvi a Crack. Lo Angeles. CaL. December S. The excellent card of today was somewhat marred bv a poor start in the fourth race. Magazine, well backed bv a coterie of confident supporters, being virtually left at the post. As the Carman colt has alwavs been a fair actor at the post, the blame can wholly be laid to starter 'IToltman's account. Listiro was generously supported in this race, being backed down from lit to 1 to S to 5, but the best the Baldwin starter could Io was to run second, the winner turning up in Molesey. entirely neglected in the betting, and against which as good as 40 to 1 could be had. LIsaro had little trouble in wearing the -pacemaker. Sir Edward, down when an eighth out. hut was unable to withstand LUoIesev's closing rush, the latter getting up and beating him out bv a half length in the, closing strides. Mr. Carman was sorely dis-appointed at 'Magazine's poor send-off. as he bet heavily on him to win. Dominus Arvi's effort in the second race was a sparkler. He took the track at the barrier's rise and. displaying dazzling speed throughout, alwavs held his opponents safe, winning with plenty to spare. He is regarded here by horsemen as one of the best horses in training in California. The Pasadena Stable scored with Iji Gloria in the day's opener. She was always held at odds-on and. breaking kindly, led all the way and won in a big canter. Mary F.. from the same stable, was the medium of heavy backing in the third race, but Tan disappointingly, finishing second to that old rogue. San Nicholas. The card was well balanced throughout and the sport was witnessed bv a crowd much larger than that of Monday. Tomorrow is cut-in day. when It is expected that one or two more bookmakers will answer the roll call. Many Brooklyn Stake Eligibles MANY BROOKLYN STAKE ELIGIBLES. omu time ago Daily Racing Form called attention to the fact that many of the great stakes of the various New York racing -associations- are still existent, and, having closed for entries last vear or the sear before, haves 'big entry lists available for future racing. Peruvian Buyer in New York: Belmont's String to be Sent to South Carolina to Pass the Winter PERUVIAN BUYER IN NEW YORK. Belmont's String To Be Sent to South Carolina to Pass the Winter. New York. December S. M. A. Silvers, of Lima, Peru, agent of the Lima Jockey Ciub. arrived in New York last Sunday on the steamer Panama. Mr. Silvers paid a visit to this country last -summer and purchased quite a number of horses, which were shipped to Peru and sold by the Lima Jockey Club to improve the breed of South American horses. Mr. Silvers was very successful in conducting that shipment of thoroughbreds, making the trip in sixteen days of actual traveling, with all the horses in good health and without the loss of a single one. On this trip Mr. Silvers will purchase a few more horses, including a sprinter and a driving horse. The horses which August Belmont will ship to Garnet. S. (.. December 1!. in charge of trainer J. Whalon. include Field Mouse. Half Sovereign, Don Diego. Mclodeon, Goodheart and Practical, besides eight yearlings. One of the yearlings is a filly by Octagon, and the other seven are bv the leading sire of 1008. the reliable Hastings. Trainer Whalen. who has been connected with the Belmont stable for many a year, says that he never had a more likely looking lot of yearlings. They arc as yet unnamed, but their breeding is as follows: Chestnut colt, toy Hastings Sunfish. Bay gelding, by Hastings St. Agues. Brown eolt. by Hastings Dulclbella. Bay gelding, by Hastings Aurata. Bay gelding, by Hastings Sourlante. Chestnut colt, by Hastings Glory. Brown filly, by Hastings -Sotiveraine. Bay lillv. by Octagon Lucy Cross. The chestnut colt by Hastings Glory is a full brother to Gloritier. the winner of the Metropolitan and Carter Handicaps, besides numerous other stakes, and 'greatly resembles that magnificent racer. The colt has showed considerable speed in liis trials and may prove a worthy successor of his famous sire. J. L. McGinnis speaks highly of the Run of Luck weanling, which he recently purchased at the Kentucky sales, and things ho landed a prize. Mr. McGinnis shipped Frank Gill to Kentucky Monday evening, where he will be placed in the stud. Henry Spencer's younger brother. Lester, who has been riding in foreign lands for the past six years, did not return home for the winter holidays. Lester has been riding in Italy, where he was at the head if the list of winning jockeys during the past season. Spencer is under contract to Signer Ronald, who has a very extensive stable in that country. Young Spencer at one time rode for Barney Schrei-ber and is said to be the only American boy now riding in Italy. Trainer Fred Slattery and James McLaughlin. Jr., will sltip several horses to Savannah next week. For the first time in his career Silas Veitcli is practically without a stable of cross-country horses. The only horse under his care at the present time is the old juniper. Grandpa. Superintendent W. A. Gormau. of the Belmont Park track, is slowly recovering from a severe attack of illness. Thirty Leading Jockeys THIRTY LEADING JOCKEYS. Eight was the high mark for winners ridden last week. V. Powers at Santa Anita and D. McCarthy at Oakland each having that number to his credit, the latter showiug excellent form, riding three- winners out of five mounts on Tuesday, anil the same number of winners out of Tour mounts ou Thursday. Stephen Donoglme has signed a contract to ride for Richard Croker next year. Donoglme was the leading jockey in Ireland during the past season and there is no reason why he should not gain that honor next year, according to a foreign turf paper. which has the following comment to make regarding this rider: "Donoghue finished up the season which found him at the head of -winning jockeys in brilliant fashion by riding three consecutive winners, one of them, it is true, being a subsequently defeated dead-heater, and there can be few instances ot" a jockey having risen from comparative obscurity to the top of the tree within three seasons. Donoghue lias got there by sheer merit, and with John Thompson and Charters riding next year for Mr. Muskcr in England, there is no reason why he should not stay where he is, namely, at the top of the list. It is to be hoped that his name will not be again allowed to appear in chalk on the Liverpool number- board. "Donoghue is no boy. being, as a matter of fact. 20 years of age. lie can go to scale at a little over OS pounds, and Mr. Croker has secured his services for next year, paying him a retainer ot $3,000, .Mrs. Sadlier-.Tackson having second claim. Dono- ghue was married last week to the daughter of Phil Behan, the much-respected Mountjoy Lodge trainer, who has had a very good season considering the comparatively small string he has had under his charge. Donoghue rode Rhodora when she ran away with the Turf Club Cup and the Champion Prize on consecutive days in the first week of September at tin- Curragh. and he will, I hope, be winning more races on her uext year." Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE TURF. Another week of the present line weather at Santa Anita Park and no one can tell how many records will be shattered by horses running over that extremely fast track. Miles in less than 1:30 Will be of everyday occurrence. Walter Jennings wanted to name a pair of his yearlings for Oneonta and Arcadia, but has been informed by the Jockey Club registrar that these names already have been applied for by another horseman and lie must select other names. Jockey Phair. the little midget who rode on the Canadian tracks last season, was badly injured about 1 lie head when a yearling which he was exercising the other day at the Woodbine track at Toronto wheeled and threw him. Although the injury was quite severe, the boy is now said to be doing well. Recapitulation shows that these Americans will race horses in England or France next year: W. K. Vauderbilt, August Belmont. James R. Keene. II. P. Whitney. John E. Madden. II. B. Duryea. J. E. Widener. George Saporlas. F. Ambrose Clark. T. Hitchcock. Jr.. F. R. Hitchcock. Eugene Leigh. F. Burlew and Frank O'Neill. Jockey Powers is creating quite a sensation at Santa Anita Park with his masterly rides, his powerful finish on fast-tiring horses being the conspicuous feature of many an exciting contest. Both Royal Ben and Norbltt's victories on Monday in the fourth and sixth races respectively were due to Powers' vigorous hand finish. E. D. Lawrence, secretary of the Tampa Bay Racing Association, is directing the overhauling and remodeling of the Florida track and expects to have it in grand condition for the opening day of the meeting to be held there beginning February 3. There are now several stables of horses quartered at the track and many horsemen now racing 011 the Texas tracks will bring their horses to Tampa after the San Antonio meeting. Trainer Enoch Wishard has transferred the entire racing establishment of A. B. Spreckels from the Oakland track to Tanforau. on account of the superior facilities which that course presents for training operations in wet weather. It is probable that the Spreckels horses will be trained at Tanforan throughout the winner and shipped back and fortli across the bay for the filling of their racing engagements. Trainer Wishard reports that the Tanforan course is in good condition. A band of Harry Stover's yearlings are the only horses quartered there at present besides the Spreckels stable.
