NO. 296. CB3CAGO, THURSDAY, DECEMBER TO, 1908. PRICE 5 CENTS Hanbridge in Good Form: Scores at His First Start in California and Defeats Creation and Sewell HANBRIDGE IN GOOD FORM. SCORES AT HIS FIRST START IN CALIFORNIA i AND DEFEATS CREATION AND SEWELL. Eyebright Wins the Principal Race of the Afternoon Jockey D. McCarthy Returns to Oakland Miller Rides Two Winners. San Francisco, Cal.. December !). Hanbridgo. one if the season's 'high-class three-year-olds of the middle west racing, signalized his first 'appearance ill California 'by a victory at Oakland today. The course was very muddy and the public was deterred rrom backing the crack -colt lieeause of the belief that he lacked in condition to cope successfully with such superlative mud running opposition as Sowoll. Creation and Ocean Shore was conceded to be. Tlie result proved that Ilanlnidge was very nearly lit. as he engaged in a gruelling struggle for supremacy with Creation from the start and finally prevailed over the seasoned Williams representative at the end of a terrific closing drive, with Sewell (hopelessly outpaced throughout and even unplaced at the finish, third honors going to Ocean Shore, at one time quoted at 100 to 1. J. Butler, on the winner, outjockeyed. Gilbert on the runner-up so palpably that a crowd gathered around the stewards' stand and yelled foul. No claim was made, however, and the official confirmation was quickly displayed. The Withers Handicap, at a mile and an eighth, and the principal feature of an excellent card, was won all the way by Eyebright. Loyal and persistent supiwrt forced the winner's odds down and his success aroused enthusiasm. D. McCarthy, after a brief absence at Santa Anita, made his re-appearance on Tony Faust iu this race and. because the popular lightweight jockey was astride the Hildreth horse, lie was made an unwarranted short-priced favorite iu the betting. He maintained a fast ami game, but unavailing, pursuit of the winner throughout and finished a good second. Milford's third was the surprise of the race. Such good ones as J. C. Core. Boggs and Cressina finished beaten off. Racing results included three favorites, one second and two tlwrd choices. Chief jockey honors went to Walter .Miller, who scored two wins and one third out of three mounts. The former champion is easily the best of the local riding contingent at present. He displayed his old ability in getting his mounts into their stride, a big advantage on a muddy track. Captain Kennedy in the first and The Englishman in the fifth, were two conspicuous examples. The former was bid up from $1,000 to $1,303 by .1. ,1. Flaunigan and bought in. Fancy, unplaced, was claimed by II. Mack, owner of the winner, for $1,023. F. 1). Weir professed to be glad to lie rid of the Whitney cast-oft at what he terms a fancy price. Uurney Schreibcr's IS ill L'aton made good at a prohibitive price in the second race and J. R. Laughrey with ridiculous ease in the third. The latter y.'as bid up from $400 to $703 by J. M. Crane. .1. 15. Dunn's big string got in from Santa Anita this morning. Tlie .Spreckels sale of yearlings advertised for yesterday was declared off. offerings failing to elicit bhltf with one exception. Sir Ralph Haines of England visited at the track today, lie is a member of an English, family prominent in racing on the other .side. The two-year-old stakes of the New California Jockey Club will close December fc.4. Bookmaker Lee 'Wagner joined the ranks of the layers at today's cut-in. '' High Private was worked seven furlongs today in 1:332 in preparation for the I'aeilic-Union Stakes. He was reported about breaking down very recently. Ed Heffuer received a letter from Superintendent Frank Clark, of Shcepshead Bay, today containing that gentleman's declaration that there will be plenty of good racing on New York tracks next summer. Joseph' S. Emery, after whom the town of Emeryville was named, is at death's door. New York Turf Gossip of the Day: Master Robert, Maskette, Sir Martin and Favette Doing Well at Sheepshead Bay NEW YORK TURF GOSSIP OF THE DAY. Master Robert, Maskettc. Sir Martin and Fayette Doint? Well at Sheepshead Bay. New York. December !). According to an absurd real estate news item. Sheepshead Bay race track is shortly to be cut up into building lots. W. K. Vanderbilt, president of the Coney Island Jockey Club, only recently announced positively that there would be racing at Sheepshead Bay next year. Track superintendent F. Clarke is going about his usual winter work. The harrows are keeping the magnificent stretches in excellent condition and the winter colony of horses are being daily exercised there. While the number of horses quartered there for the winter is pot as great as in former years, tstill the, track is far from being deserted. Simon Healey has Master Robert out daily for light exercise, while frequently one may see the champion two-year-old. Sir Martin, and the Futurity winner. Maskettc. given walking exercise. Keene's crack filly is growing fast and will no doubt carry her brilliant two-year-old 'form to next season. Fayette 1 is Sir Martin's companion at the track and both are looking extremely well. Several yearlings by Irish Lad have worked some exceedingly fast trials and trainer Healey thinks that they will show to advantage next season. Jockey Seder, who rode for Burlew & O'Neill last winter, lias signed a contract to ride for a South American stable and will leave for his new country shortly. . 1. J. Dwyer, Andrew Miller. T. Mouahan. Mars Caasidy and Thomas Welsh arrived Iu New York last night after having spent some time at French Lick Springs. It is said that J. E. Madden will ship fifteen horses to Savannah. Ga.. to race at tlie meeting there, which will commence Christmas day. The sale of broodmares belonging to II. T. Oxnard. which took place at Newmarket, England. Monday, brought extremely low prices. Eight out of a- consignment of ten sold at an average of $110. Unusual Accident at Santa Anita: Runaway Racer Badly Injures Two Men - Restigouche Gives a Great Display of Speed UNUSUAL ACCIDENT AT SANTA ANITA. Runaway Racer Badly Injures Two Men Restigouche Gives a Great Display of Speed. Los Angeles. Cal.. December II. When Font ex ran away while going to the post today, lie threw his rider ;iud plunged through a bar on the outside rail near tlie five furlongs starting post. Ross Vance, a. deputy marshal, and John Daniron. the latter a colored stable hand of "Kansas" Price, were lounging on tlie bar and were dashed to the ground with terrific force. Vance suffered a broken leg and Daniron had many of ids teeth knocked out. Poutex was returned to the post, but acted so badly that the starter refused to let E. Martin ride him. Big fields were the rule today, but despite this the public apiioared to be able to pick the winners. The feature event of the day. the Oneonta Handicap at six and one-half furlongs, went to the odds-on choice. Kestigouche. conceding much weight to everything iu the race. It was only a big gallop for the former Keenc crack, which set a dazzling pace throughout, winning in a canter. The other races were of the mediocre order and were featureless. The cut-in day .saw twenty-five bookmakers doing business. This is by far the best showing at this time of the year since racing lias been inaugurated here. The live new books to go on were: George Guyton, Peter Collett. W. MclSride. Henry Haines and Dave McCuddy. The betting was the heaviest of the week, with the layers of odds breaking aliout even on the day's speculation. Among the latest arrivals from the east were W. V. Conran. who has a ,big string here, and Fred Adler. Assistant Judge Ed Cole was not present today. He sprained his shoulder in an accident at .his hotel last night and will be absent for a day or so. Kit Cliiuu left for Salt Fraucisco tonight. Judge Hamilton fluid si notice posted In the paddock today cautioning all owners and trainers not to A'lnl their horses to the jnist short or to "qualify" tor future races. This1 emphasizes tlie determination of Judge 'Hamilton to have clean sport here this winter. It. F. Jockey Goldstein Was fined $50 for cutting across Hasty Agnes with Ida "May Iu the third race. I Racing Telegraphy in England RACING TELEGRAPHY IN ENGLAND. A bit of interesting information leaked out in the proceedings of parliament November 20. It was due to the fact that in England the telegraph is operated as a part of the post oiiice department and so its operations are a matter of legitimate inquiry on the part of any member of parliament disposed to ask questions. Sporting Life of November 27 says: '"In the house of commons yesterday, Mr. Cooper asked the postmaster-general whether the post oiiice send a special start of telegraphists to nice meetings; and, if so. how many were sent to the Epsom race course on' Derby day. 100S. and to the Doncaster race course on St. Leger day. 190$: whether lie could say in what building the telegraph office is situated on a race course: whether the post oiiice hires the room or whether the racecourse authorities make a payment for the facilities offered: and whether the telegrams to the press giving the betting and -state of odds receive the usual press rebate. "Mr. Sydney Buxton writes iu reply: 'The post office sends a special staff to all important race meetings. Sixty-four men were sent to Epsom on Derby day and sixty-two to Doncaster for the St. Leger. The race course authorities provide the office free. It is usually either in or adjoining the grandstand. Messages sent to the press under the usual regulations go at the press rates prescribed by parliament. The postmaster-general has no authority to discriminate against certain items of news, such as those giving the statu of the odds.' "Mr. Cooper next asked the postmaster-general whether he could state how many telegrams were received at and dispatched from the temporary telegraph office on tlie race course at Newmarket on October 14 and 2S. lUOS: whether he could say whether these telegrams were sent to and dispatched by bookmakers and related to bets: and whether the post office incurred any financial loss by establishing offices on this race course on those days. "Mr. Sydney Buxton states: 'On October 14 Ce-sarewitcli day the numbers were S72 ordinary telegrams received at the grandstand: 3.772 ordinary telegrams dispatched from tlie grandstand, and 03(5 press telegrams dispatched from the grandstand. On the 2Sth Cambridgeshire day 773 ordinary telegrams received at the grandstand: 3,372 ordinary telegrams- dispatched from the grandstand, and 501 press telegrams dispatched from the grandstand. I can give no information as to the contents of these telegrams. No financial loss was incurred.' " Millin Youngsters Bid In MILLIN YOUNGSTERS BID IN.
