ITO. 29S. CHICAGO, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 12, 1908. PRICE 5 CENTS Eastern Stars Defeated: High Private and Desirous Beaten in Their First Oakland Starts EASTERN STARS DEFEATED. HIGH PRIVATE AND DESIROUS BEATEN IN THEIR FIRST OAKLAND STARTS. Cotytto Wins the Main Race of the Afternoon All the Way Voorhees at Odds-on Runs Poorly. San Francisco. Cal.. December 11. Interest in the racing at Oakland today was tremendously enhanced by the appearance of the two eastern turf celebrities. High 1'rivate and Desirous, in the fourth and sixth races respectively. Doth had worked won-drously fast in private, but failed dismally in public. Tlicre were plenty of excuses forthcoming for each of the renowned pair. The Forsythc colt has been on the verso of a breakdown since, last August and stripped for today's race noticeably sore in front. The general public did not know this and on the strength of his great reputation hacked him persistently, notwithstanding that the steadily receding betting, from (5 to 5 opening to 4 to 1 closing, reflected his doubtful condition. .Moreover, track conditions were of the most trying kind. The course was a cross between a quagmire and a ploughed Held. Under the circumstances High Private's third to Cotvtto and Workbox. two of the fastest two-year-olds in training here, was a meritorious performance. Its excellence was further enhanced by the fact that several good ones Ocean Queen Dishop W. and Kose Oueen linished behind liini. With Desirous it win different, excepting th.tt it was jier first public trial in over a year, the grand-looking Hamburg filly having no valid excuses on the score of condition. She was simply irretrievably handicapped with the inexperienced Schmidt on her back. The field of horses opposing Desirous- was of hopelessly inferior class. It seemed almost inconceivable that a, royally bred filly costing Sll.flCO as :t yearling, and which subsequently developed into one of the good eastern two-year-olds of her year, could lose among such a lot of nondescripts. Schmidt, however, was equal to the occasion. The .start found him pulling up on the inside. Excessive urging brought diim into early close proximity on the pacemakers. Then began a series of suicidal maneuvers that landed her third at the finish. The betting on Desirous was phenomenally heavy. From the posting of the odds- at 2 to 1 until the close at 0 to 5, the layers were kept busy handling the money. Some of the largest single wagers ever recorded on the coast was sent on the supposed good thing, and her defeat created a mild sensation. Desirous ran in the name and colors of R. H. (Hob) Davis, a millionaire poolroom man of Xew York. ('otvtto was the only winding public choice, of the beaten favorites, two, Voorhees and Delle Kinnev. were at odds-on. The good card, backed by ideal weather conditions, helped to attract an unusually big off day attendance to the beautiful race course. Fordello, which was thought to have a mortgage on the race won. by Abraham, was a conspicuous au-Kcnteei because of falling lame while at exercise during the morning. Kdlla Colston offered to sell him to Thomas McCreery for $"00. Walter .Miller, who is now the 'most successful jockey here, has been engaged to ride Rosebon. .T. (". Core.' "This moral wave is onlv a passing fade." asserted Edward Cor-rigan. loosening up a bit today and talking for imblieatioii about his visit in New Orleans ami at Citv Park race track. "It had its origin in New York when Governor Hughes called a special session of the legislature to suppress racing. It lias swept over the country, but I confidently believe it will soon have its day and the country will return to well regulated racing. Where are the crowds that usually throng New Orleans at this season of the year? Your hotels are empty and 'the restaurants look vacant. In my judgment Louisiana will change her law when New Orleans reckons the full extent of her losses. The ministers should lie spiritual advisers and not politicians if they would keep our veneration and re-Mr. Corrigan said the City Park track would not be disturbed in any way. believing that the existing drastic legislation would be modified at the next session of the legislature in 1910. "Since my arrival here I have found that the existing law does not represent the will of a large and ixwerful element of the people of New Orleans, but of the moral faddists." Mr. Corrigan called twice at the Hennen building, headquarters of the New Orleans Jockey Club, todav. to see Colonel Samuel F. Heaslip. president of Citv 'Park. That even Mr. Corrigan has given up anv idea of fighting the law is now appareut. lie pins his faitli in the future and wants to keep the tracks intact. Corrigan will go to Mobile from here, whore he savs ho will spend the winter at his home near there, at Magnolia Springs. Mrs. Corrigan is now awaiting' him at the Alabama cottage. He will not go to California. Tom M'grath Proves a Failure: Well Backed Because of Fast Work in Private but Runs Unplaced TOM M'GRATH PROVES A FAILURE. Well Backed Because of Fast Work in Private, but Runs Unplaced. Lor Angeles, Cal.. December 11. Despite the fact that the card today was void of any stake or striking feature, the attendance was by far the largest of the week. This was probably owing to the balulv weather, which was ideal for racing purposes. The sport was featureless throughout, although several of the finishes were of the hair-raising kind snid were productive of much enthusiasm. Tin most pretentious field faced the barrier in tne last race. Tom MeGrath. on the strength of a fast work-out. was made an opening decided favorite, but receded several points in the betting about post tipie owing to the. strong backing of Lisaro. which was generously supported by the wiseacres. Neither of them won. the winner turning up in U. L. Carman's Cold Heart, which was entirely neglected in the betting. He led from start to finish and had enotlgh left to withstand Lisaro's closing challenge. Mr. Carman has been betting in phenomenal luck in the last few days, this being the third winner he has put over the plate at good odds in the last two days. . , , , . ("unique, well supported by a number of form players in the third race, ran away three miles while on I is way to the post and did not leave the post when the hairier went up. Judge Hamilton had on his disciplining clothes again today, lining jockey Martin $25 for rough riding in the first race and jockey Musgrave $2. in the fifth race. In this race, riding Miss Lida. he almost knocked Gannet down by trying to get II rough an impossible opening at the first turn. Tomorrow is draw-in day and it is expected that at least twenty-live books will again do business. Stirred by Sir Martin's Sale: New Yorkers Much Interested - Madden Retains Fayette for Racing in This Country STIRRED BY SIR MARTIN'S SALE. Ney Yorkers Much Interested Madden Retains Fayette for Racing in This Country. New York. December 11. The one absorbing topic ir turf circles today was the sale of Sir Martin and Edward, which took place at John E. Madden s stables at Sheepshead Day yesterday. S. man Gooeh, the famous horse show judge of thoroughbreds, acting for Mr. Wiunus. a wealthy horse owner of 'Brighton. England, was the purchaser. While the price was not mentioned, it is evident from what Mr. Madden said-tonight that the sum he received in exchange for the colts was entirely satisfactory to him. Before the colts were turned over to the Tiehenor-Grand Company for shipment to England, thev were given a thorough examination by Dr. Sheppard, the noted veterinarian, who pronounced them sound in every respect. "I would like to make it very plain." said Mr. Madden tonight in discussing the sale of Sir Martin and Edward, "that I was not prompted in the letting 'o of these two good colts by any action of the New York state authorities as against racing in tho east. I was offered a price for them that 1 could not decline. That is really the long and the short of it. Neither is this the first time I have sold' to Mr. "Winans. I have disposed of several cracks to him. among the number my great trotting stallion Siliko. for which he paid inc $35,000. Botli Sir Martin and Edward are well nominated on the English turf. I have been nominating colts abroad '''wince 189G. and I think I know something of that game King James, which I sold a few months ago 'was eligible for this year's Derby, and David Garrick. which I sold for S30.000 was also eligible for good events in England." Mr Winans. the purchaser of these crack racers, is an American, who has been residing in England for many rears and is actively connected with the trotting tu'rf of Europe. With his recent purchase of Allen Winter, the winner of the Readville Trot-tlnir Derby, for which he paid a small fortune and with bis acquisition of Sir Martin and Edward. Mr. Winan's name should figure conspicuously in both trotting and running circles next season. Sir Martin was bred by Mr. Madden at his Ilam-burg Place in Kentucky and proved to be the two-vear-old sensation of the past season. lie was the wluiier of six valuable stakes and finished second lu three others, including the Futurity. His total earnings for tho season amounted to the sum of 'Edward is a brown colt by Plaudit Passan and started in eleven races, was first in four, second in one. third in four and was unplaced in four, winning the sum or $14,225. . It is rumored in racing circles tonight that Mr. Madden received 5f05.(XH) for the pair, $50,000 for Sir Martin and $13,000 for Edward. It Is not likely that Mr. Madden would part with the colts for a figure less than this sum. as their net earnings iu one season alone amounted to $92,815. It is said that H. P. Whitney offered Mr. Madden $45,000 for Fa vet to. but the offer was refused. It is the intention of Mr. Madden to send Fayette to the track at Washington, where he will be trained for racing in tills country. Oiseati. the six-year-old son of Ornus Kitty Gunn, arrived from 'Lexington. Ky.. yesterday and is stabled in Jersey Citv. awaiting shipment to England, which will be" made December 1 on the Wilson Line. Oiseau was recently purchased by Mr. Alfred Jensen of England, and it may lte possible that this good racer, which performed so impressively under the colors of James I!. Brady, will be prepared for .f campaign in England. Oiseau was retired early from training 'bv Mr. Brady on account of having gone sore in his -preparation for an important race, hut is now said to be in excellent condition and may again show to advantage under colors. James Owens, the American steeplechase jockey, has found it necessary to undergo another operation in Paris. Owens was badly injured in a fall last year and was operated on three times, but not one 'proved successful and now another will have to be attempted. Well organized racing is a new thing to El Paso, but taken to kindly. Already opulent visions have been engendered by the bite of the racing ling and at this distance and season there is something of interest in the following from the El Paso Daily News : "El Paso is but on the threshold of her greatness as a racing center, and plans already outlined give promise of making this' city a racing center un-equaled even by New Orleans or Saratoga jn their palmiest days, according to plans now formulated and almost ready for putting into execution by men of unlimited wealth of New York City. "The veriest inkling of the great tilings in store for this city were brought to El Paso today by Judge Leigh Clark, who returned this morning from a trip of several days in New York. He tells of two mammoth hotels, one in El Paso and one in Juarez, and two mile tracks, one across the river and one on this side, all to be built and operated bv a group of millionaire horsemen of the east, who plan to start work on the proposition not later than January. " 'I am not at liberty to disclose the names of those back of the proposition,' said Judge Clark todav, 'although I am not connected iu any way with the movement, but I became aware of the movement while I was in New York and uikhi investigation I found it nil to lie true. " 'According to the plans of these men. and they have gone over the situation carefully, and figured out every detail, they will erect a splendid big hotel in this city and another in Juarez. These will eclipse anything in the west ami will accommodate the wealthy men. owners of the finest horses in the world, who will patronize the two tracks here. A mile track is to bo built in Juarez and another in ibis citv. One will be used exclusively for horses and the other for automobiles, and long and extensive race meets will be given- here '-practically the year around. " 'As these men have it reasoned out El Paso offers the ideal location for them. Its situation tin the Iwrder has been one important factor. El Paso's mild winter climate is another. The fact that lKX)kmaking is allowed at the tracks in this state is still another important factor. Poolselling may not he allowed in Texas, but it is in Mexico, and they have even investigated and found that the contract between the Western Union and the F.ederal Telegraph Company of Mexico provides that any message filed with one must be transmitted to the other if the sender desires, regardless of the contents of the message. These conditions, according to the plans of the backers of the proposition, form an ideal situation for the building up here of the greatest racing center in the western continent. " 'The idea is not to remain dormant long, as 1 understand it, and while I cannot say absolutely that such is the case, I understand that persons representing these Interests w;ill arrive In this city not later than January to commence the preliminary work on the proposition. " 'The men backing this movement are of unlimited wealth and can do all they have in mind if the fancy strikes them.' " Recent Arrivals at Oakland RECENT ARRIVALS AT OAKLAND. Trainer J. A. Abraham ran within striking distance pursuit of the pacemakers from the start, caught them tiring when a sixteenth out and drew out with a rush finally. Mike Asheim outbroke his opposition and set the early pace, then rellnquishedvhis, lead on the last, turn and seemed badly beaten, but came again and got up in the last stride for second place. Desirous, from a bad inside start, established herself in forward pursuit and went hopelessly wide on the turns, then drew, out in the stretch, but failpd at the end under an Inadequate finish. Trust, flatfooted at the start, closed a big gap in the last half. Burnell failed to stay. The (.tilers were beaten off. Scratched 74315 Fordello. 109. Overweights Vronsky, 1 pound.
