DEFEATS BERRY MAID UNEXPECTEDLY IN A FAST MILE AT OAKLAND. Saracinesca Takes a Race Tawasentha Is Favored at the Start and Wins from Native Son. San Francisco. Cal.. December -1. Berry Maid's defeat in tbe mile feature by Voorhees was the sensational racing incident at Oakland today. Tbe Forsythe lllly carried only a feather impost of ninety-live pounds in the race and was thought to outclass her opposition besides. Therefore little danger of serious contention was apprehended and least of all from the notorious Spreckels' cripple, whose sudden rejuvenation was nothing short of miraculous. In view of the piercing cold and still somewhat slow track the time. 1:40 flat, made by the winner was considered very good. The opinion prevailed that Berry Maid was not quite keyed up for n gruelling contest at a mile, this being the first time she had ever been asked to go that far. Ocean Shore ran amuck on the first turn, crowding Desirous. Legatee and Keep Moving, the llrst named to her knee ami the other two out of their stride. For this exhibition of glaring incompetency. Groth. the rider of the offending horse, -was suspended indefinitely by the stewards. President Thomas H. Williams was represented during the afternoon by Apto Oro, Creation and Rosevale. The 'first mentioned pair figured prominently in their respective races, the lilly being eliminated at the start. T. D. Sullivan's colors were borne to the front on Saracinesca in the other mile race on the card. His success was due chiefly to Walter Miller's alertness and vigorously rough riding. The stewards deliberated for some time after Standovcr's jockey had lodged a claim of foul against him before they confirmed their original placings. In two conspicuous ins'taiiees. the races won by Tawasentha and Hereafter, the results were decided nt the start, both of these horses being virtually presented with their respective races by the starter. Native Son. the beaten odds-on favorite, forced to play second fiddle to Tawasentha, was claimed by O. A. Blnnchi for $1,225. F. D. Weir was also a claimant for the unlucky Stover gelding, but lost out in the toss-up. This was Native Son's first appearance in a selling race and his defeat by such an ordinary racer created surprise and jockey Scoville was criticised for his lethargic ride. Miss Mazzonl and Fulletta. the two choices in the mile and a quarter selling race, also Tailed. The winner unexpectedly turned up in Kelowna. which was quoted at SO -to 1. Thi horse was not raced until four years of age. winning bis first race at the Anaconda meeting lu September last. In sonic quar- tors the opinion prevails that the son of Bute will ' develop Into a good one. Favorites and outsiders shared cqunlly in the afternoon's racing successes. Although fruitful of surprises the siort, for the class of horses engaged, could hardly have" been improved upon. Jockey .loc Notter arrived Sunday morning and was at the track this afternoon with .Tames Casey, and, according to report, had a financial interest Ik every race run. He will not do any riding until Christmas day. New Selling Race Feature: Trainer Bids Up Horse from His Own Stable-Jack Atkin's Victorious Debut NEW SELLING RACE FEATURE. Trainer Bids Up Horse from His Own Stable Jack Atkin's Victorious Debut. Los Angeles. Cal.. December 21. The racing today was marked by the peculiar feature of a trainer running up his own horse. Just after Fleming won the last race and was put up for sale, trainer M. Doole.v, who had charge of Carman's horses up to within a few moments of the sixth race, boosted the gelding from $500 to $700 and then desisted. As he walked away from the jndges' stand he claimed that It. F. Carman's son had heaped abuse on him and ended it by calling him an objectionable name. He at once reported the circumstance to Judge Hamilton, who told him to make out his charge in writing and he would fully look into the matter. Carman and Doole.v had a falling-out today over what is reputed to be a fuss about salary, the latter claiming that Carman had not paid him since the Hamilton meeting and that he (Doole.v) had spent $2,800 of his own money on the horses. The matter will, in all probability, come before Judge Hamilton for settlement. Jack Atkin made his first appearance here today, running an impressive race and simply playing with a fair band of sprinters at live and one-half furlongs. He is rounding to his best form just at present and is about ready to put up one of his best performances. Pat Dunne finally won a race today with Dainty Belle, the mare winning from a slower band at almost prohibitive odds. Ben Trovato, one of the most consistent horses here, added another purse to his owner's credit when he beat Goldway in a mild drive in the fourth race at one and one-eighth miles. Charles Walker, of the firm of Chambers & Walker, arrived here today for the winter from Detroit. He has been coming here for the last five years, usually arriving about the holidays. The somewhat gloomy weather was instrumental in curtailing the attendance, which was the smallest Monday crowd of the present meeting. Sir Martin and Edward Go to England SIR MARTIN AND EDWARD GO TO ENGLAND New York. December 21. Sir Martin and Edward, the crack two-year-olds which were recently sold br John K. Madden to 'Mr. W brans of Brighton. England, wore shipped on the Atlantic liner. Minnehaha, which, left here Saturday evening bound for Eug-land. Dan O'Neill, an exercise boy. who has handled Sir Martin all season, went with the colts and will look after them on the trip across. Mr. Madden was at the pier himself to see that they were properly placed aboard. "I am glad to get Sir Martin and Edward off my hands," said Madden, "for if they had remained Fayette's chances of winnltur races In this country next season would have been lessened. As it is. 1 believe Fayette will develop into a great three-year-old and will win the lion's share of the stakes for horses of that age." Madden will visit France after the holidays for several weeks, after which he will re-turn here to begin getting his big stable in shape for the eastern racing season. Oiscau. which was purchased by Walter Gray at the recent Lexington sales for $150 and then sold to Alfred .Tcsson of Melton Mowbray. England, for S2.500. was shipped to England on the steamer Toronto in charge of jockey J. Murphy. Oiseau is looking remarkably well and may probably be seen under colore next season. The loard of estimate lias leen asked to pass on the account of Mr. Elder, the assistant district attorney of Kings County, for services rendered In connection with the race track cases. Mr. Elder's statement says that nearly $5,000 was expended in this manner. The items of the bill of the assistant district attorney are as follows: Drummond's Detective Agency. $614: 'Metropolitan Secret Service Bureau, $S4: Lanyon's Detective Agency. $1,S15: Itobert H. Elder, for various services. $07S. The board of estimate has not as yet passed favorably on 'Mr. Elder's statement. George Saportas sent two more of his jumpers tc France Saturday, when he shipped Chaseaway and Corncob on the Minnehaha. Mr. Saportas received a letter from W. C. Hayes reporting that all the horses recently shipped to France arrived in good condition. It is reported that Thomas F. Ryan has established a breeding establishment at. his place near Lvnehburg. Va. He has secured several mares from William Garth and only recently purchased the stallion. Dolce far Niente. the nine-year-old chestnut eon of Hanover Holiday. The case of Joseph Marronc. the New York horseman, against the Washington Jockey Club and its stewards. S. S. Howl and. Henry J. Morris and Samuel Boss, for S50.000 damages, was tried in the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia today "before Chief Justice Clitbaugh. The suit is the outcome of Marrone being ejected from the Benning track and the assertion of the stewards that his horse. St. Joscuh. was "doped." Chief Justice Clabaugh late this afternoon directed a verdict in favor of the Jockey Club and the stewards, holding that no evidence of the alleged conspiracy had been shown. He held that the ticket purchased by Marrone on which he was denied admission ufter his trainer's badge had bcfii taken nwa.v was a mere license, revocable at will of the ulub on a proffer of the price paid. Edward Corri-gan. reputed backer of the light which is being waged against the Locke bill in the courts, was arraigned at the bar of the Criminal District Court in this city today. He was accompanied by attorney Lionel Adams, who will be associated in the tight against the law with E. Howard McCaleb. Corrlgau entered a plea of not guilty and a demurrer to the information pending against him was filed by his lawyer. It is contended that the information is not sufficient in law to compel Corrigan to answer, and for that reason he Is. entitled to his discharge. Corrigan was granted a leave of absence by Judge Baker to leave the state during the Christmas holidays. He will go to Magnolia Springs. Ala., to spend the holidays with his family. Until after the expiration of the yuletide season there, will be no further proceedings in the fight. Samuel F. Heaslip, president of the City Park Club, did not appear for arraignment. In his absence Judge It. II. Marr appeared with a motion to quash, the allegation being advanced that the Information against Heaslip is not sufficient in law to lustify an answer. This case, like the others, went over until after the holidays. In the case of W. W. Lvles and others, charged with operating a Iwok. District Attorney Adams filed the bill of particulars demanded by the attorneys on Saturday. John W. Gates, millionaire steel magnate and sportsman, is here and had a .conference with Mr. Corrigan at noon. Tills fact led to the rumor that Air. Gates might assist Corrigan in his fight here. Pending the test in court a monster mass-meeting of business interests and citizens has been called for next Monday night. December 2S. to make formal protest to the governor against the Locke law and ask for its modification at a special session o the legislature. Memphis Horsemen Hopeful MEMPHIS HORSEMEN HOPEFUL.
