PRICE 5 CENTS Yankee Daughter Again: Alarms Admirers by Showing Soreness but Wins All the Same YANKEE DAUGHTER AGAIN alarms admirers by showing soreness, but; wins all the same. Katie. Powers the Only Winning Outsider, Favorites Taking Five Races More Horses Going to Oakland. San Francisco, Cal.. December 23. "Bis Tim" Sullivan's Yankee Daughter survived early interference and won the second of the series of live selling races on the card at Oakland today. The winner displayed such pronounced stiffness and disinclination to extend herself in her preliminary gallop that intended hackers took alarm and proceeded .to ignore her in the betting. This enabled a well-informed few cognizant of the Mazagan Ally's chronic soreness to obtain unexpectedly liberal odds against her. Bubbling Water captured the other two-year-old race. This -was a condition affair, the only one on the card, at live furlongs, and its running wound up an interesting though featureless afternoon's sport. The remaining four selling races were won by St. Francis. Fulletta. Captain Kennedy and Katie Powers, all being favorites except the last named, which was accorded only meager support because of Glas-uer's presence in the saddle. This was the Goid-blatt jockey's first success on the local track. Today's racing, over a muddy and deceptive course, developed extraordinarily formful results. The annals of local racing do not often show such uniformly forward running of public choices. The ranks of the layers were augmented by two newcomers at today's fresh cut-in. A majority of the thirty-four doing business quit big losers on then-afternoon's ring transactions. P. T. Chinn has telegraphed Secretary Percy W. Treat for stable accommodations for twenty horses which he intends shipping up here immediately from Santa Anita in charge of .Tack McCormiek. Colonel Wliite was sold to W. Durker before today's races for $1,000 and ran in his new owner's name and colors. Jockey Scoville was suspended by starter Dwyer for three days for misbehavior at the post on Prince Nap. ' E. J. Baldwin is expected from Los Angeles today. The famous turfman was reported to be seriously ill last week. Leading Jockey of This Year: Methods and Archivements That Have Brought Powers Into Prominence LEADING JOCKEY OF THIS YEAR. Methods and Achievements That Have Brought Powers Into Prominence. With only about another week before the end of the current year, there is little chance that . Powers will be displaced from the top of the jockey list, which position he has successfully held for the past three months. Vincent Powers is a graduate of the Canadian racing circuit. Ills home is at Panama, a small village in the State of New York, not far from Buffalo and his early instruction in the handling of thoroughbred racers was imparted to him by trainer John Nixon of the Valley Farm Stable, having been taken on at Fort Erie as an exercise boy. Powers is an exceedingly well-behaved and scrupulously honest lad, of retiring habits and tastes, no matter how great bis success. His career has not been that of a skyrocket, for he has worked his way steadily, overcoming every opposition and without any sensational periods to the position which he now holds at the head of the jockey list. The great factor in his success has been bis re-liabilitv and consistency, coupled with his remarkable gift of horsemanship. Powers has the faculty, possessed in a high degree also by Tod Sloan, though his is a much more admirable character than Sloan's, of getting more out of his mounts than other riders could. Over and over again he demonstrated that under his skillful handling horses would run faster suid stay farther than for any other boy. Those that used to be beaten at seven furlongs would stay a mile and win for him. He was alert at the post, but alwavs so obedient that he was never in trouble for spoiling starts, or disobedience of the starter's orders. During the running of a race, no matter how large the field or the natural eagerness of his competitors to best the star rider, it came to be looked on as a matter of course that Powers' horse always kept well to the front and in a good position to make the deciding run. Powers' wonderful ability as a hand rider has been in evidence in .several races recently run at Santa Anita Park, where his mount, when tiring and almost falling in the stretch, was brought home a winner under his vigorous hand finish. Powers started this season riding at New Orleans, where he met with considerable success, having sKtv-four wins, fifty-nine seconds and fifty-six thirds to his credit, earning for the different owners for -whom he rode the sum of $35,334. At the Kentucky tracks, Lexington, Churchill Downs and La-tdilia. Powers' work in the saddle attracted the attention of the entire turf world. He rode seventy-sir winners, forty-eight seconds and thirty-eight thirds at these meetings, which represented to the owners for whom he rode the sum of $39,805. It was on the Canadian circuit where Powers began his real struggle for the leading jockey honors. The contest between Powers and Shilling on the northern circuit was so keen and close that it was oue of the most striking features of the Canadian racing. Powers rode twenty-two winners at Windsor, fifty-nine at Fort Erie, sixteen at Montreal and six at Toronto. Sintfe goiug to the coast. Powers, although at times ho has found it dltticult to make weight, has upheld his reputation for consistency and has piloted some thirty-eight winners home. . Powers work in the saddle during the season of 1007 was rather mediocre, for out of 4(51 mounts he only rode fifty winners and finished the season with a percentage of .11. while this year he-'has already ridden over 300 winners and will no doubt add to this, total before the first of the year. Jockey Powers, it is said, may ride in England next season for L. de Rothschild, who. it is alleged. Hi ass offered him a retainer of $15,000 through August Belmont. '. The Useful Career of Jugger THE USEFUL CAREER OF JUGGLER. Juggler, the five-year-old son of namburg Elusive "has been a useful and consistent racer during the 'four years of his career on the turf. Bred and raised by IL P- Whitney, Juggler made his first start on June 10, 1905, as an added starter in the Tremont Stakes at Gravesend, but ran green and finished last. He won only one race as a two-year-old the Autumn Stakes, at Sheepshead Bay. defeating' Belmere and Athlete in decisive fashion, while earlier in the vear he ran second in the Adirondack Handicap and third in the Hopeful Stakes. Juggler i-raced as a three-year-old under the colors of Burlew & O'Neill and performed in excellent style at New Ills victories in the Thanksgiving and Speed Handicaps at the Fair Grounds are worthy of mention, especially the former, in which lie won by a nose In an exciting and sensational struggle with St. Valentine and Jack Dolan. Juggler made a very creditable ' showing in 1907, winning six races, four of which were stake events the King Cotton at City Park, the Rockaway at Aqueduct and the Corona and Garden City at Jamaica. The beginning of the present season found Juggler nt the New Orleans tracks, where he was a potent factor in the success of the Burlew & O'Neill stable. Soon after the opening of the Aqueduct meeting Juggler was purchased by G. M. Odom and raced in his colors during the remainder of the season. The big brown son of Hamburg has always been a good horse over a considerable distance of ground and the past season has been the most successful one of his career, both as to the number of races won and the amount of money earned. He started in thirty-four races, was first in eleven, second In nine, third in four and was unplaced four times, his winnings amounting to $S,331. Still that was the banner year of the stable's history, with $71,892 to its credit. That year McCarter and Spconer together won more than the whole stable did In 1908. Had McCarter remained sound there would, probably have been a different story to tell, but unfortunately this game and .staying young horse fell lame early in the year and this made a great difference. However, there, are a host of owners in this country who would deem themselves singularly favored if they could show stable earnings of more than $30,000. Desnite his inability to do himself justice. McCarter defeated Jack Atkin in the rich Excelsior Handicap at Jamaica and was the stable's leading winner. Next to him was the good three-year-old. It was a notable triumph for him and made amends for his inglorious displays in the two Derbys at New Orleans early in the year, nowever, it was not at Yonkers alone that Pinkola proved liimself a thoroughly good race horse. The fact that he was only twice unplaced this year in twenty-three races, those races being the two Derbys referred to, speaks for itselr. And out at Santa Anita he may yet add to his story of this year before the new one steps' in. But if lie does it will be for a new owner, he now belonging to Ed Alvey. Another horse in the stable proved himself not only a useful servant, but a mavel of hardihood. The stewards of the Jockey Club, realizing that they will enter on a new era of the turf next season, have determined to keep away from the shoals of reform and have decided to do away with the field stand for the next two years. Everybody who wishes to see racing next year will have to buy a "grandstand badge or remain outside of the local tracks. It was the men who frequented the $1 Inclosure who caused the anti-betting crusade to develop. These race-goers, with small salaries and limited financial accounts, were badly crippled when they went "to the race' tracks and lost their money. As a result many families suffered. Consequently there was an attack on race track gambling which brought about the repeal of the Percy-Gray betting law. Another feature determined upon by the magnates is the abolishment of complimentary tickets. Ginette, the French mare by Clarion PIcardia. which was brought to this country several years ago and raced under the colors of R. T. Rainoy, will be shipped to France next Saturday on the Atlantic liner Minnetonka. The old mare Pronta and the six-year-old Massada will be sent along with Ginette and all three wil go to Nash Turner at Maisons-Lattitte. It is said that these mares are destined for the stud. France and Hungary, although as yet, so far as Japan is concerned, horse-breeding is only in its infuncy. The government representative recently reported officially that a great improvement has already been made in the class of young stock as the outcome of crossing these 'imported sires with the native mares, which are mostlv nondescript ponies. It will be Interesting to witness the type of animal eventually produced, and we understand that the Japanese military- authorities are more than satisfied with the results already obtained. Klugman and Fred Adler. Most of thei newcomers drew in to get the benefit of the usual heavy Christmas betting." The largest draw-in last year was twenty-six. The feature of today's racing was the victory of the old handicap horse, Proper, in the fifth race at seven furlongs. He was entirely neglected iu the betting, opening, at 15 to 1 and closing at 25 to 1. Breaking kindly next to the outside rail he raced forwardly throughout and easily came away from Dainty Belle In the final sixteenth, winning with speed to spare. Several sharpshooters that had narrowly watched his last previous race won heavily on him. Miss iSain's spectacular finish In the fourth race was productive of much enthusiasm. She was badly outfooted to the stretch, then had to go around on the outside, but steadied down to her work in the final eighth and. finishing with a jgreat burst of speed, nipped the tiring Angelus in the very last stride. A. Pinkerton Denies That the Sport Makes Criminals, and He Knows IN ABLE DEFENSE OF RACING. W. A, Pinkerton Denies that the Sport Makes Criminals, and He Knows. New Orleans, La., December 23. William Pinker-ton, while here last week in connection with the business of the Pinkerton Detective Agency, said that New Orleans plainly showed the results of the abolition of racing this winter. "If New Orleans could have had racing this winter it would have been the greatest and biggest meeting iu the history ofthe local turf," said he at the St. Charles last evening. "I believe it was a grievous wrong to pass so drastic a measure, for racing could be regulated very satisfactorily. But it is impossible to kill it. Racing has become too big an industry in America for that. Millions of dollars are invested in stock farms in Kentucky and elsewhere for the breeding of high-grade horses." Mr. Pinkerton only recently came in from a tour of the Pacific coast, during which he visited San Francisco and Los Angeles, and he says that in both cities the racing meetings are larger than they ever were before. But still there are a great many people who would bring their horses to New Orleans when they wouldn't risk the long trip across the continent to the Pacific coast. New Orleans, he says, though business seems fairly good in general lines, looks duller than he has ever before seen it in the winter time. Mr. Pinkerton says that racing could be regulated in such a way as to eliminate the vicious and undesirable features, and yet preserve the sport in all of its purity. One way would be to increase the admittance fee. That would keep out the man who could not afford to pay, and also increase the minimum bet which one could place to such a figure that the privilege of betting could be indulged iu only bv the man of means who can afford to lose. Mr. Pinkerton scouts the idea that tbe race track breeds crime. He says that every year there are far more men who go wrong on the stock exchange than ever have fallen through race betting. His business keeps him in touch with, these conditions all over the country, and he says that there is a percentage of weak men who will be tempted to take what is not theirs, but men who will misappropriate the funds of their employers for one thing will do it just as quickly for another, and if they have not got racing to put the blame on they will say it was some other form of gambling, such as poker playing or craps shooting, or perhaps women, or speculation in stocks, cotton or grain, or any one of the many other commodities gambled in at the commercial exchanges. "No. horse racing Is not the corrupting influence tliat it is held to be," said Mr. Pinkerton. "I know from experience of many things that are worse, and as for criminals following the wake of the races, that Is all nonsense. Just after we established our office here last year we put two men at the local track to co-operate with the police. During the entire season there was only oue robbery at the track, and the man in that case was arrested by our people tho following day and is now in prison. Raee tracks neither breed nor harbor criminals. The fact is that suspicious characters will not be tolerated anywhere around a race course." Not Hostile to Americans NOT (HOSTILE TO AMERICANS. John Porter, most famous of English trainers, when asked recently If lie thought there would be any action regarding the invasion of the British turf next year bv American trainers and jockeys, replied: "I til Ink not. providing the Americans are of the respectable class. The last invasion, with a few exceptions, was not altogether satisfactory. There was a strong suspicion that some trainers were in the habit of 'doping' their horses before sending them to the post'. I think this is a very pernicious liabit and injurious to the horse, and that no punishment would be too severe for trainers guilty of such practices. I have great respect for some American trainers, men of talent who have fought the game fairly and honestly and not altogether unsuccessfully. The United States lias sent us two fine jockeys In Dannv Maher and Tod Sloan. The latter was a genius. How sad to think he should be lost to the turf. Other American jockeys, such as the Reiff bovs and 'Skeets' ifartin, .possess merit and have ridden with success both here and on the continent. (But some followers of American jockeys have gone back to the States and I can assure you we can well spare them. It Is such men as these that bring the turf Into bad repute. I feel sure that the English Jockey Club and all. followers of the turf in Great Britain will gladly welcome owners, trainers and jockeys from America, those who choosQ to make a peaceful and honest invasion o the British turf." Milton Young's New Notion MILTON YOUNG'S NEW NOTION. Lexington. Ky., December 23. Colonel Milton Young will leave here Christmas ay with D. A. Campbell for the latter's home in Calcary. Alberta. Mr. Young intends to Investigate-conditions in the country of the northwest, and if he finds Alberta as It has been pictured to him bo will give up his Idea of going to the Argentine Republic, where hp, Intended to establish a thoroughbred breeding establishment such as he recently sold in Kentucky. On these occasions the long row of private boxes are filled with family parties. These boxes extend the entire length of the grandstand and back of them runs a wide aisle which nermits those who feel inclined to promenade up and down between races. ' Several attractive features have been given since the opening day in the way of races for Cuban-owned horses and the club is now offering a series of races in which the horses shall be ridden by officers of the Rural Guard and officers from Camp Columbia. The first of these events will be run on Saturday and it is expected that it will arouse keen local interest. There is considerable rivalry between the Cuban and American soldiers as to who are the best riders. Three oilieers from each camp will have mounts and to the winning team will be presented a handsome silver cup besides a medal to each rider of the winning team. Hurdle races will also be featured from now on as there are sufficient jumpers on the ground to give races of this sort. There are a number of good gentlemen riders here among the Americans and Cubans, and next winter tin club proposes to build a steeplechase course in the infield and feature that sort of racing. There were several arrivals during the week, among tliem J, U. Strode. A. P. Ginter. Charles Landsberg. George S. Davis and P. Gallagher. Every lwat from the States brings In some new ones. The tourist season begins in a couple of weeks and the city council has subscribed $50,000 for the entertainment of Dhe visitors. Of this amount the Cuban Racing Association gets $5,000. which will be added to the different events during the last week of the carnival season. The carnival season in Havana Is unlike that at New Orleans in that there is .1 general holiday for two weeks, and all the natives as well us the visitors turn out to enjoy themselves. There are many features connected with the Havana carnival that cannot be found even in the far South American countries. The rabbit races, the Jal Alai games, the horse races, the base -ball games, the apple rolling contests on the Prado and the concerts on the Maleeon. in which bands of over 100 nieces take part. There are also a number of great balls which are held in the immense theater in which grand opera is given. James Robertson has done well with his small stable. Johnny Pangle. however, did even better, os he won with Trey of Spades in the three races in which the colt carried his colors. After Trey of Spades last victory he disposed of him for SSOO tr a local man. Chief Hayes won two races for J. L. Adams and Momentum one. These two horses also finished Inside the money in five of their other starts. Eustacian won two races for Jack Baker and L' Amour two for A. G. Mollnelli, A, Baxter has gathered in three purses, two with Colonel Blue and one with Rexall. Colonel Blue beat good opponents in Ms last start, but. unfortunately, was jumped on and cut down. 'French Nun. in the same stable. Is also on the shelf. Jimmy Johnson's Laughing Eyes has been returned a winner In two of her starts, and old Solon Shingle has also been returned winner" on two occasions. Besides these horses the following have also won: Water Cooler. Artful Dodger. Roseburg H., Momentum.1 Oroonoka. Rexall. Oleosa, Hawksflight. Brimmer, Griften, Washakie, Bitter Hand, Malediction. Oxnard had rather a disastrous experience with the mares he had sent over from America, for the eight that changed hands made only $925, all told. It would obviously have paid him to give the animals away, instead of going to the exjwnse of sending them all the way across the Atlantic to realize this beggarly sum. They were, however, in every respect an unattractive lot, and why they were sent to these sales is a matter that is beyond one's comprehension. The reception they have had will, however, serve a useful purpose if it convinces American breeders in general that they are likely to find the policy of dumping their surplus stock in our market rather a costly one." On the last day of the sales, Friday, December 11, twenty-eight broodmares were sold for John Mackey and J. B. Haggin. of Elmendorf Stud. They brought very much less than their value. H. Stanhope, of Kentucky, evidently missed fire. She turned up in the Newmarket sales as Mr. Stanhope's property and was sold to Captain Northcv-Hopkins for $2,050. At the same sales Andrew Miller, of New York, offered the American stallion. Handspring, fifteen years old. by Hanover, out of My Favorite,, by Raydon and Frank Ilardlngo secured hlniTa bargain-for $1,250. The notable sales were few. The Burton Stud's black horse, 5. by Bill of Portland Opera Dance, by Macheath, went to the German government for $7,750. Mrs. Langtry's old cup horse. Merman, went to the same stud through Count Lehndorff for $2,500; J. B. Buchanan, the whiskey man. Tiald $9,500 for Major Loder's two-year-old chestnut filly. Lantana. by Cupid, out of Opulent, by Florentine. She only cost $450 as a yearling ami lias won six out of eight races she has contested, so the daughter of Cupid a sire deserving of good support has paid her late owners well. Baron Springer, of Austria, secured the prize broodmare of the sales, the lato Duke of Devonshire's: six-year-old bay marc. Lilla, by St. Simon Melody, by Tynedale. She was offered at ,n reserve price of SlO.OOQ and IsIu foal to Ga)luule and fetched $14,000, the bldtjer against the Austrian nobleman being M. ,Cherl Hal-bronn. of Paris, a horse dealer of high class. The Goodwood Cup winner. Plum Tree, ,by Persimmon, out of Cauliflower, having been ksold privately to the French government for $25,000. did not come up. Among the Tully Stud mares. Bush (dam of Knight of Tully) realized $7,750. Baron Springer securing her for Austria, and Mr. Gill gave $7,000 for Fair Jean, a sister to Jean's Folly ' and half-sister to Black Arrow and Cherry; Lass. In the course of the five, days no fewer than 586 animals were sold under the hammer for $625,745, the average per head being nearly $1,070. This average is not so good as that obtained last year. It can be seen that racing is far from profitable to King Edward. The contest for the leading jockey honors among the steeplechase riders in England for the season or 190S has developed into a close and exciting struggle iKitwcen F. Mason and P. Cowley, with fifty-four and fifty-two wins respectively to their credit. As crosscountry racing in England continues throughout tin; winter, the result of this contest will not be known until after the first of the year, but the. following table shows the record of the twenty leading steeplechase jockeys from January 1 to December 5, inclusive: Jockey, Mts. 1st. In 190S 3,000 horses ran In England, starting 15.000 times, and winning 1.700 races worth about $2,700,000. Of the 3,000 one-fifth were Irish-bred, but they won one-fourth of the total money run for. Thus GOO Irish-bred horses started 3.000 times, winning 400 races, value $625,000. It is a curious, but noteworthy fact that whereas the total number of runners. 3,000, started 15,000 times, giving an average of five starts per horse per annum, the figures work" out at exactly the same rate for the Irish-bred horses, the COO starting 3,000 times. These figures again come ont in the case of the foreign-bred horses, the seventy starting 350 times. Jockey Treubel is displaying good form since his return to the saddle after being on the ground for ten days for disobedience at the post. Advance figures on the value of British turf prizes for the season of 190S gives the total as .$2,707,905. This includes the racing of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Jockey Butwell is one of the most consistent riders iu the Texas circuit and is displaying at San Antonio the same form that made him so popular at Dallas and Beaumont. Jockey Hayes' continued absence from the saddle is diio to his inability to make reasonable riding weight. The bov is growing so rapidly that he now finds it difficult to do less than 112. The trophy which goes to the owner of the Australian Melbourne Cup winner this year, is in the form of a large silver shield, beautifully chased, and a view of the finish of a race at Flemington is engraved in the center. The trophy is valued at $500. Early Tide came out of his last race at Oakland with one of his legs in much the same cqudition that followed his last, start at the Seattle meeting, when he fell lame. Trainer Buxton is not yet able to determine how serious the trouble may be this time. Grande Dame's fast performance in the third race at Santa Anita Park Tuesday was overshadowed by the record-breaking feat of Centre Shot. but. nevertheless the three-year-old Commoner filly's race was a sparkling one and in defeating the favorite. Mary P.. she equaled the track record of 1:24 A for seven-eighths of a mile. Joseph Harper, who was many years ago a prominent Australian bookmaker and an owner of race horses, died at his residence, Malvern. Australia, at the age of seventy-eight years. Harper owned, amongst other horses. Barwou, which won the Champion Stakes and Australian Cup in 1S63. and Banker, which won the Derby in 1S62 and the MellMMtrne Cup in 1863. He failed In 1887 and was a milk vendor in a humble way of recent years. Starter Dwyer's work at the barrier at Oakland so far this season has not .been up to the high standard which he maintained here last season and throughout the Seattle meeting. Dwycr allows the jockeys to do a great deal more twisting and turning at the post than formerly, and it is the general opinion that this accounts for his failure to get as good results as he might. Famous Race Courses of Old England: Racing Conducted over Several for the Last Two Centuries-Epsom's Features FAMOUS EACE COURSES OF OLD ENGLAND. Racing Conducted Over Several for the Last Two Centuries Epsom's Features. As the classic events of the Bullish racing season, the Derby. St. Logur ami Oaks, always create considerable interest in lovers of the thoroughbred in nil parts of the world, it will not be amiss to say a few words concerning the courses over -which these historic rums are run. Not the least interesting feature of these courses is- their age. Racing -was held at Epsom as far back as 1045. but it did not assume a permanent character until the first Derby in 17S0. The famous Newmarket course is over 200 years old. while the Ascot races owe their origin to Queen Anne in 1711. The York and Doncaster meetings art-over 150 years old, while that at Goodwood is over 10O years old. The three Thames valley courses Hurst Park. Kemptou Park and Sandown 'Park are all modern courses, established in the last thirty-live years. It was on the last-named course, however, that the first race for S'.O.OOO stakes took nlace. Twenty-three years ago the managers of Sandown Park startled the racing world by instituting the Eclipse Stakes, nominally worth this amount first won by that famous horse. ISendigo and the success of the venture was such that the Jockey Club ultimately established two $50,000 races at Newmarket, viz.. the Prince of Wales' Stakes and the Jockey Club Stakes. Needless to say. the races for these enormous stakes attract the best horses of each year, and it is on record that in 189:; two winners of the Derby, two winners of the St. I.eger, two winners of the Two Thousand Guineas and a winner of the Ascot Cup ran on the Sandown Park course for the Eclipse Stakes. Newmarket, "the racing capital of England." possesses no fewer than ten courses, the longest being four and one-quarter miles in circuit. Here the Jockey Club has its chief seat, while over 1.000 horses will often be found in training on the Heath. Altogether there are nearly fifty training establishments at Newmarket, and a large army of employes are constantly at work during the racing season, keeping the courses and galloping grounds in order. The cost of this labor is mostly met by the fee charged by the Jockey Club on each horse trained on the Heath. For horses in training an annual charge of $25 is made, while a fee of $10 is levied or. yearlings taking their first lessons. Altogether between .$(10,000 and $75,000 is derived from these sources every year. Although somewhat expensive, most owners like to train their horses at Newmarket; for then the horses need not be taken away to run. There are seven annual meetings to choose from, and prizes like the Two Thousand and Cesare-witch to win. and., in addition, the course can be chosen which will most likely suit the horse. For. while some animals can run equally well on any course, there are others which never do themselves Justice except on a course they like. Consequently there is often a great deal to be gained by properly "placing" a horse. It is at Newmarket where King Edward's race horses are trained by Dick Marsh, as the famous trainer is known on the turf; while not far from the town is a beautiful estate owned by Danny Maher, the famous American jockey, and probably the richest professional rider iu the world. Ilow many people are aware that had It not been for the generosity of Lord George Bentinck some sixty years ago the Derby race at Epsom might have been crossed off the racing calendar? In 1S29-30 $100,000 was spent on the erection of the grandstand, which accommodates 7.500 spectators. The maintenance of the Epsom summer meeting, however, cost more Uian the revenue from the stands, etc., and the consequence was that the clerk of the course went to Lord George Bentinck and explained that unless more money was forthcoming this meeting would prolwbly come to an end. Lord George lent the clerk 25,000. which the latter used to such good purpose that the Epsom summer meeting took a new lease of life and the clerk and his family made their fortnnes. For manv years afterward the original S100 shares in the Epsom Grandstand Company realized large sums in 'the market. In 1SS4 they brought $400. although they dropped some $100 after that. This was owing to a falling off in the entries for the Derhv and Oaks, however, and a great fillip was given to the popularity of Epsom when, in ISOO. it was announced that in future the Derby would he worth a guaranteed miniranm of $25,000. Its guaranteed value was then made $32,000. at which it iiow stands. There are several courses at Epsom, but the chief of them all is the Derby course lOfone and one-half miles. This course contains the steepest hill lending down to Tattenham Corner to be found o.n any important course in the kingdom. In addition, the first half-mile of the track is on the ascent. As a matter of fact, the Derby course offers the greatest test of merit to race horses, and that is why 4he best horse nearly always wins. It has often happened that the winner of the Derby has also carried off the Ascot Gold Cup, the value of which of late years has been between $15,000 and $20,000. The Ascot course is circular, nearly two miles long, and within the confines of Windsor Park. As a matter of fact, the course is crown property, and to a certain extent under the care of the Master of His Majesty's Buckhounds. The Ascot course is generally considered to be the best in England, one great advautagc being that practically the whole of the racing can be seen from the stands. The race for the St. Leger. which takes place on the Doncaster course, has rightly been described as the "Derby of the north." for it is witnessed every year by something like 30,000 people, mostly Yorkshiremen. The race is of the same value as the Derby, viz.. $32,500. As a matter of fact, the Doncaster meetings are "run" by the town corporation, and the course relieves the rate-payers to the extent of about $00,000 each year, a large portion of the profits of the races being devoted to the reduction of the rates. The Ebor Handicap, which takes place on the York course, is also an event which draws thousands of excursionists: the race for the Gimcrack Stakes founded iu honor of Gimcrack. a famous grey horse foaled in 1700. which won races when he was eleven years ohWbeing almost equally popular. Fat and Lean Racing Seasons: Striking Changes in the Standing of English Owners from Year to Year FAT AND LEAN RACING SEASONS. Striking Changes in the Standing of English Owners from Year to Year. All classes of sportsmen lament the fact that a greater measure of success has not fallen to his majesty, though there is some little cause for congratulation in that the sum total of the royal win nings is nearly double that of the previous season. As with most other successful owners, the bulk of his majesty's winnings has been earned by one animal; the filly, Princesse de Galles. having accounted for some $15,000 of the $27,250 odd which stands to the credit of the king. But what a -lottery racing is. One could scarcely wisli for better-bred bloodstock than that sent forth from the Saudring-ham Stud, but on account of several lean years having been experienced, his majesty leased several yearling colts from the Tully Stud, which has for so many seasons sent out good winners for its founder. Mr. Hall Walker. The result has not proved very successful, for only Minoru earned winning brackets, his Great Surrey Foal Stakes victory at Epsom bringing in $4,070. Other owners there are, however, who buy of the lest, and breed from the best, wiio experience the reverse side of the medal when fortune fails to smile npon them. For instance. Colonel E. W. Baird. the popular ex-steward of the Jockey Club, figured in last year's list with $52.7S0 to his credit, principally earned by Wool Winder, but tills season one looks in vain for his name in the winning owners' list. Not even1 a $500 plate. W. B. Purefoy. too. could Iwast of a good season in 1007. when tally was at his best, with $50,110. What a change lias to be chronicled when we find him with one winning horse, which lias credited him with two races of the total value of $2MG5. Again. W. Bass than whom, perhaps, no one spends more money in endeavoring 'to purchase of the best has had no Sancy to do battle for him this year. and. his six winners of nine races worth $14,700 show a great falling off from the previous season, when, eight animals won for him fifteen races valued at $67,305. Sancy alone contributing $4C.020 to that total. Again. Sol Joel provides another instance of an owner experiencing a lean year. In 1907 he was seventh iu the winning owners' list, with $43,805 to his credit. Yet, in spito of big prices paid for promising racers, the owner named has to admit that you cannot buy a Polymelns every year, and his total for this season of $14,990 shows a considerable falling off. while nine animals have been called on to contribute this amount by winning 'thirteen races. Still, with nearly 15,000 in -prizes S. B. Joel has. perhaps, little to complain of, and he has certainly not experienced such a lean year as, for instance. Captain Greer, whose Slleve Gallion was mainly responsible for his total of $42.S35 in 1907. and $34,172.50 in 1900. Now two .races stand to his credit, of the value of $1,370. ProbaMv. however, there Is no more notable instance of an owner experiencing a lean year than that provided iby Major Enstace Loder. who had a remarkable sequence of fat years as represented by the following table: Year. Amt. Year. Amt. 1903 $7S,090 1900 SS0.245 1901 99.495 1907 38,220 1905 55,795 He must feel quite out in the cold with a beggarly $8,S75 only, as the result of the two Taces each which Galvanl and Miranda have credited to the famous Pretty Polly's owner. The reverse side of this picture, however. Is presented by glancing at the statistical tables, and noting the position of, say. SIgnorinetta's owner. Figuring in the 1907 return ns the winner of a paltry plate of $1,005 value. Chevalier GinistrellU thanks to his famous filly, is actually now fourth in the winning owners' list, with the total of $57.-400. What a remarkable change in luck. And what a wonderful reward for the chevalier's unswerving belief that some day his beloved mare. Signorina, would throw something as good as herself. Another sporting owner who breeds and races his bloodstock for the love of the sport, and who has experienced a fat year, may lte cited in Mr. Fairie. and he has his crack colt, Bayardo, alone to thank for being third in the list of successful owners, with over $05,000 to his credit. Probably another good year is in store next season for the "white, orange sleeves and cat)," if all goes well with Bayardo. which has retired into winter quarters as well as his owner could wisli and one cannot help thinking how the xor colt would have been pulled to pieces, metaphorically, during the winter months if his owner had not run him in the Dewhurst Plate, for had not the critics discovered a slovenly performance on his part in the Middle Park Plate V Well, well, 'twas ever thus. A good horse always had detractors. Reverting again to owners who are experiencing good years. J. B. Joel has moved up from second place last year with $09,015 to first place this season with the huge total of $131,230. which does not look as if the lean- year is coming yet. while Hall Walker, if going down a few places, is still well up in the list with $52,232.50. Then Mr. Barclay Walker comes in with $38.005 all but a century of which has been contributed by his smart colt. TJlangwm, which probably must be accounted unlucky not to be figuring as a Derby winner. Another popular owner whom all race-goers are delighted to see well up in the winning list is Leopold de Rothschild, whose total of nearly $50,000 has many contributories. but. of course, the Cup horse. Radium, has been the biggest winner, but one must not forget the game, staving Santo Strato. which will probably train on into a good long-distance runner. "Augur," in Sporting Life. Fast Miles Recorded This Year FAST MILES RECORDED THIS YEAR. So far in ithe racing of this year a mile has been run in 1:35) or faster seventy-six times. These miles have been won by fifty-nine different horses. The crowning achievement in this line was Centre Shot's mile in 1:372, which displaced the Dick Welles Kiamesha II. record. Without disparaging the filly In the least it is only fair to say that the credit for her achievement mnst he given to the almost incredibly fast Santa Anita track. It is there that 'thirty-four of the seventy-six fast miles of the year have been recorded, i Considering the great number of exceedingly swift horses now racing or preparing to race in California, it is safe to assume that Centre Shot's mile will be eclipsed before the Santa Anita meeting comes to a close. In the meantime the vear's miles in 1:39 or better, where, when and by what horses they were made are as follows: Horse. A. Wt. Track. Date. Time. Jack Atkin 4 124 Aqueduct ..
