FIRST IN THE RICH CHRISTMAS HANDICAP BEFORE A GREAT HOLIDAY CROWD. Montgomery Runs Unplaced Trois Temp Scores Again Smiley Corbett Defeats Pajaroita Miller Heavily Fined, i' San Francisco, Gil.. Decenilier 2.". Doranlc. backed into favoritism, scored a hollow victory in the rich Christmas 'Handicap at Oakland today. The Rood three-year-old came out of his magnificent exploit lame. Good weather prevailed and the bis race was witnessed by 15.000 spectators. Eight horses started, including Legatee, the last-named being added at the eleventh hour. Tlie momentous struggle over tlie still course of one mile and a quarter was spectacular and interesting from start to finish. In the running the conspicuous Forsythe colors, worn by Lee, were always prominent astride Doranto. wild at the end of a mile lie singled out with an electric rusk and the race was over as far as the winner was concerned. Mllford's sensational sprint from the rear into a fast-going second caused everv-body to stand agape with astonishment. Firestone finished a good third after exhaustive paceniaking for one mile. Tlie Hildreth-Ellison trio, from which much, was expected, were unimportant factors in the race. Montgomery. Don Enrique ami Royal Tourist retired when Dorante made his real effort. Xotter's methods proved ineffective with the non-staving Don Enrique, and McCarthy drove Montgomery into the bog-like going on the inside on the far turn and had liim anchored. Fears were entertained that Montgomery would not arrive in time, and trainer Taylor was just able to unload and saddle him for the big feature. Whether it was the long confinement in the car or the peculiar going which affected the ITildreth horse adversely, the fact remains that he ran one of the poorest races of his career. Clamor, the highest tried of all the eligibles. fell lame during bis morning exercise and was withdrawn. The condensed history of the Christmas Handicap is as follows: Year. Winner. A. Wt. Jockey. Stanley Fay's Santa Anita Handicap: Jack Atkin Wins in His Best Style-Jockey Treubel Punished for Rough Riding STANLEY FAY'S SANTA ANITA HANDICAP. Jack Atkin Wins in His Best Style Jockey Treubel Punished for Rough Riding. Los Angeles. Cal.. December 23. Stanley Fay von the Santa Anita Handicap by a head today in a sensational finish with Czar amid ilea fen ins acclaim. Passing the stand the first time Treuliel. in playing for a snug position, bumped Vox Populi off his stride, he caroming into Husky, and he in turn interfering with Magazine, the three being thrown clear out f the race. Treubel was sharply reprimanded for his rough tactics, fined $500 and set down for thirty racing days, but will 1m? allowed to ride for his contract employer. P. T. Chinn. Stanley Fay's victory was popular, as lie was backed by the public and talent alike. He was skillfully rated for the first seven furlongs, then moved up fast and. in a stirring last sixteenth drive, outgamed Czar. The latter was made too sudden use of when Hearing the far turn and this probablv cost him the race. He showed rare gameness under the whip in the final sixteenth, but was not quite good enough. Gowan, well supported lv nianv easterners, raced promisingly for seven furlongs anil then gradually fell away beafen. Jack Atkin. with the steadying impost of 130 pounds on his back, had little trouble in disposing of oue of the best fields of sprinters here, winning tiie third race at sir furlongs in fast time. He is at his liest and should be hard to beat from now on. The weather was balmy and clear, being ideal for racing purposes. Roy Offutt. of Wright & Offutt. will sell his entire stable of eighteen horses on Saturday, January 2, by auction in. the paddock. James Crooks and John Fitch, well-known sportsmen from Hamilton, Ont arrived here today and will remain for the winter. Round and Round was run up from $500 to $1,100 and sold to Charles Ilealey. The attendance today was about 8.000 and the thirty-one books did by far the greatest oue-dav business of the present meeting. , Encouraging Progress at Havana ENCOURAGING PROGRESS AT HAVANA. Havana. December 20. Large crowds have been turning out at the Almendares track during the past week. On Tuesday the attendance was the largest of any week day up to that time, while on Thursday as many persons witnessed the racing as were present on Sundays, which is the banner day of the week for racing in Cuba. The people in Havana apparently are just awakening to the fact that there is a Tace meeting in town. The club has directed jill its energies to interesting the fashionable people ir. Havana in the sport and their labors. are beginning to bear fruit. One day of the week. Thursday, is set apart as society day at the track and It is beginning to be the proper thing for the fashionable people of the city to be seen at tlie course on these afternoons. On Thursday last the fifty boxes in the rear of the grandstand were all crowded with family parties. The ladies were all I' handsomely gowned and anyone at all conversant with Havana society knows what this means. Signor Maria Diaz Igrator. a brilliant young attorney of Havana, is looking after the society end of the sport and he has interested Fome of the most influential men on the island in racing. Several gentlemen prominent In the social life of Havana have become Interested to such an extent that they have expressed i wish to have racing establishments of their own, and with this end in view they Jiave commissioned a couple of A'merlcan owners and trainers who are racing here to purchase them suitable material to carry their colors. Al Hanicl. the clever young horseman who developed and raced that good "filly, Notasulga. is a great favorite with the Cubans. The fact that he is racing one of the best horses here has attracted their attention, namel brought the speedy Halifax over from the States and the old sprinter has won a couple of good races during the present week in which he simply smothered his opponents with speed. After Halifax's last victory Hamel was approached by a Cuban gentleman, who is one of the principal wholesale merchants in Havana, and asked if he would consider an offer of $1,200 for the horse. Hamel did not feel like parting with his breadwinner for' that figure and he was told to look around and find a couple of horses which could win and that they would be purchased, provided that Hamel would agree to do the training. Offers have been made for Cloisteress, Sally Preston and Chief Hayes, but their owners have refused to sell except at an exorbitant figure. Young Hinchcliffe, the little apprentice that J. W. Pangle brought here from the States, is fast developing into a good rideri He is a great favorite here and has ridden a number of winners. Hannan. Hugh McCarren's lad. is also improving. He is a ten-pounds better rider now than when the meeting began and when he returns to the States lie, too. will be a good rider. M. Sheedy's jockey. Tommy Harty, has finally struck his stride and lias ridden three winners during tlie past week, narty has put in some strenuous work on the roads surrounding Almendares and is three or four pounds lighter than lie was last summer. Young Rollins, who came down from New York with Frank Lightfoot. has ridden a couple of winners. Lightfoot won his first race at the meeting when Jeanette M. beat Eustacian a few days ago. A. Molinelli and jockey Liebert returned to New York on Saturday. Liebert got into trouble here with the officials for rough riding and was suspended lor one week. Molinelli won two races while here with L'Amour. The hitter will remain here in charge of A. Albright for the remainder of the meeting, when lie will be shipped over to Tampa. There was a hurdle race on Thursday last, the first given since the meeting legaii. It proved a strong attraction despite tlie fact that only three horses went to tlie post. J. W. Pangle furnished the winner in George Lelper. which won off by himself. He was ridden by Dick Pending, who got in from New Orleans the morning that tin? race was run. Pending, not having had time to lose his sea legs, was a bit wobbly, but he rode a splendid race. Lizzie Flat, one of the others starters, proved a keen factor until at the fourth hurdle, where she fell. She and George Leiper took the two previous hurdles head and head and less than a length separated them when she fell. MeClain. who rode Lizzie Flat, was shaken up a bit. but fortunately escaped witli no broken bones. The mare fell heavily, landing on her bead and turning a complete somersault. J. F. Strode is talking of disposing of his entire stable and returning to the States. Strode is interested in the building of a race track in Jacksonville. Florida. Associated with him are several other horsemen, among them W. H. Fizer. It is not thought that the Jacksonville track will lie completed in time for racing next spring, lint tlie idea is to hold a meeting there next year, following that at Tampa. On Saturday a military race was run in which the horses were ridden by oOicers from the Rural Guard and from Camp Columbia. The three Rural Guard officers' wore small Cuban Hags on their arms to distinguish them from the American officers, who wore their national colors on their arms. A tremendous crowd turned out to witness this race and so strong an attraction did it prove that there is talk of giving another race of this kind before the meeting closes. President-elect General Jose Manuel Gomez presented the rider of the winner with a handsome silver trophy. The presentation was made in the state box. which is situated in the middle of the grandstand. Measure for Hot Spring Racing MEASURE FOR HOT SPRINGS RACING. Hot Springs. Ark.. December 25. The proposed amendment to tlie Amis anti-racing law. which will be presented by the Business Men's League to the legislature for action, is as follows: 'To except Garland County from the operation of the bill us to wagers or bookmaking. Permit racing on tracks in this county under auspices of responsible organizations, not to exceed fifty days in any one year, nor three days in any one week. Provide for a county racing commission composed of three reputable citizens and real estate owners of this county to he appointed by the governor. "The jurisdiction of the commission is restricted to the matter of protecting the public against fraudulent racing or other fraudulent methods connected with racing with power to punish or suppress same. "Said commissioners are to become county olficers and draw their salaries from the county treasury on approval of their accounts by the judge. "Provides for a license tax of $100 per day on racing associations for every day of racing, to be collected by the county collector and turned into tne county treasury, out of . which the salary and expenses of the commission are to lie paid and the residue to go to the public road fund." The result of w recent poll among .business men and other representative citizens as to whether or not racing in Garland County under certain regulations and restrictions tdiould be resumed, showed that 570 out of a total number of 071 were for racing, lifty-four against racing and forty-one noncommittal. Paddock Improvement at Oakland PADDOCK IMPROVEMENT AT OAKLAND. San Francisco. Cal.. December 25. Under the supervision of Superintendent Grant an improvement was made at the Oakland track the early part of this week which will certainly be appreciated by those who are accustomed to pay for the privilege of entering the paddock. Heretofore the fifty-cents admission fee has .carried with it nothing but the permission to pass into the inclosuro and see 'the horses before they were sent to the post. Xo provision, however, was made for them to witness the running of a race without leaving tlie paddock. Hereafter this will not be tlie case. A space about twenty-five feet in width in front of the paddock lias been inclosed for their accommodation, a wire fence oaring been built from the end of the paddock nearest the betting ring down to tlie track fence. In the rear of the space a tier of seats has been placed, which, will furnish seating room for about 100 persons, land down In front, close to the rail, chairs will be placed for tlie accommodation of others who may want to be out in the sun. There are two entrances to the inclosure from the paddock. Superintendent Grant thinks that those who pay to enter the paddock are entitled to something like fair accommodations, and his latest move will meet with approval. To Sell Rainey Two-Year-Olds TO SELL RAINEY TWO-YEAR-OLDS. Los Angeles. Cal..' (December 25. One is a two-year-old colt. Roy, Jr.. named after R. A. Rainey. and is said to be exceptionally fast, having recently worked three-eighths in thirty-six at Santa Anita Park. The other is a two-year-old full-brother to Frank Lord and is named Fighting Chance. The Ralneys did not return to California this winter as they expected to do. and so thought it advisable to dlspose-of' these two colts. Fuller's Day at San Antonio FULLER'S DAY AT SAN ANTONIO. San Antonio. .Tex., December 25. Today's large attendance and the victories of a majority of favorites were features of the racing here this afternoon. Midsummer weather 'prevailed and the track was lightning fast. J. W. Fuller sent a pair of winners to the post during tlie afternoon in Toy Boy and General March-tnont. The last named had a close call, only landing the purse in his final stride. Los Angeles Form Chart LOS ANGELES FORM CHART. . (SANTA AX IT A PARK.) FRIDAY. DECEMBER 25. 1908. WEATHER CLEAR.
