NO. 314. CHICAGO, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1908. PRICE 5 CENTS Favorites All Defeated: Oakland's Races Taken By Overlooked Outsiders without an Exception FAVORITES ALL DEFEATED. OAKLAND'S RACES TAKEN BY OVERLOOKED OUTSIDERS WITHOUT AN EXCEPTION. Booger Rod Takes the Chief Race of the Afternoon Jeanne D'Arc and Spooner Run Unplaced. San Francisco. Cal., December :0. From the class of horses today's racirnr at Oakland was of the regulation off-day description. A majority of the rfices were conditioned for selling platers and in n form way results were hopelessly chaotic. Outsiders enjoyed a clean sweep of the turf honors. The procession of winning long shots began with Egotist at 20 to 1 and wound up with Knight Deck at t! to 1. The fateful summary included Exchequer, S to 1. Altamor. 15 to 1, Booger Bed. 7 to 1, and Bock-stone at 8 to 1. It was financially the most disastrous afternoon's sport the local speculatively inclined race-going public has experienced this season. The, defeat and unplacing of Tim Sullivan's Sarn-cinesca without mishaps or excuses of any kind in the second race was a staggering blow to the plunging contingent. In fact, every liorse in every race was seemingly striving for all he was worth to gain one of the coveted positions at the finish. Figent. favorite in the closing race, inay have been a single exception. Unlike the other five favortes the bettiug on Jones' fiilly 'had an unhealthy asiecr. The Todd Handicap was the only feature and relieved the card from hopeless mediocrity. It was over1 the live-furlongs course and engaged some of the fastest sprinters in training, including Jeanne d'Arc, Smiley Corbett, Pajaroita. Booger Bed, Spooner, Trois Temp and five others. The winner turned up in the lightly weighted Booger Bed after si hotly contested struggle through the stretch with the favorite. Smiley Corbett. Jeanne d'Arc failed dismally, as did Spooner under his light impost of ninety-five pounds. For the cuppy going and in comparison with the other races, the time. seconds, was phenomenally fast. James Boden arrived from Santa Anita today with Gowan, Botanist, John Bice, Gene Wood and Pnn-de-Oro. Steve Lawlor placed Gowan In Mr. Boden's care temporarily. She will be started in the 1ig New Year Handicap, unless rain intervenes. Firestone, an eligible in the same stake, worked well between races this afternoon. CStartcr Dwyer inflicted a three-day suspension on CS. Russell for misbehavior at the jost on Sain-posal. Mr. Dwyer's starting for the past month lias been uniformly good and satisfactory. Hie legislature convenes next Saturday. The Antl-Itacing League has . prepared two bills for .xjmultsiueous presentation in the senate and as-enmbry. In the matter of adverse racing legislation Thomas II. Williams has no fears for the outcome. He said today that the California legislature contained a sulticient number of good and liberal-minded sportsmen who could be depended upon to save the great .sport. Fraudulent Prices from Los Angeles FRAUDULENT PRICES FROM LOS ANGELES. At Santa Anita Park Saturday. December 2(5. the horse Lord Stanhope ran unplaced in the first race with 5 to 1, 2 to 1 and even laid against him as closing -prices. The prices received by and pub-liJied in Daily Bacing Form were 4 to .1. 4 to Ti and 2 to 0. On the same day Alleviator ran unplaced in the sixth race at closing prices of J! to 1. 7 to tl and 4 to 5. The prices received by and published in Daily Bacisig Form were :i to 1. 4 to 5 and 2 to o. In both cases the prices had been changed in the chart sheets while' in transmission from the race track to the telegraph office at Los Angeles. Both of these horses were backed abroad from the track for place and show, with the proviso of even money place, or better, or no bet. There is reason to think that the bulk of the money bet was placed iit eastern cities, but tome may Iiave been wagered here and in closely adjacent cities. When the horses were beaten and the forget! prices were published the cheaters were able to claim a draw under their conditions as to prices and save their money. Daily Racing Form does not take the faintest interest in Uk; operations of neople. who bet. but It is keenly interested In publishing everything appertaining to racing from day to day with absolute accuracy, and takes the greatest care to do so. In tliis case it failed for the reason stated. Wihat is published here has developed in the court- of an investigation now in progress, and Daily .Racing Form asks persons who may have been affected by the transaction, or who mav have gained some knowledge of the affair, as well as of the persons engaged in It and sums wagered, to send particulars 'to this newspaper. Any such communications received will be considered confidential. Risk Takes Two Races In One Day RISK TAKES TWO RACES IN ONE DAY. Savannan. Ga.. December .'SO. Racing at the Thuuderltolt com-sc showed marked improvement, and it- was the most satisfactory day's sport since the opening of the meeting. Larger fields of better class horses went to the post in each of the five races run today and faster time was recorded. The feature of the. day was the double, victory of three-year-old Bisk, which, after winning the third race, came right 'back and disposed: of a good band of opponents in the fifth, including Belle of the Bay. the favorite. Leonard Joe Haymau and Jigger. At Richard Croker's Glencairn Stud, near Dublin. Ireland, the sires ate Orby and Clonniell, the former commencing stud life in the season so rapidly approaching, while Clonniell will at the same time begin bis third year. Orby. a son of Orme and lthoda B., by Hanover, ber dam Margorine. by Al-gerine. owns the unique distinction of having won the L'nglish as well as the Irish Derby, and was beyond question a high-class race horse. He is a "Urtifullr- molded chestnut, standing well up to 1(5.1, possessing great power, bone and substance. Most o the nominations to Orby have been appropriated, and amongst others who are sending mares to him are Iorrt Derby, the Duke of Portland. Sir Edgar Vincent. Mr. It. Sherifte. Sir John Itobinsoii. Mr. Martin T"ltzfrerall. Mr. B. Kennedy. Mr. 1'. J. Farley and Mr. P. Field. He will be limited to r tv .. Mr. Croker's mares ar thirteen in number, and are an exceedingly nice 16, With the exception of lthoda B.. the darn of Orbj all are in foal, and it "niay be that this grand niacin will prove true to C'lonmell after all. In the coaling season she will visit Lord Edward, II. at the Tickford Park Stud. The mares which will nay court to 0rbv are St. Hylila, by St. Simon, out of Darkness, and in foal io Parhnah: IlkkeStowh (sister to Gleneskyi. In foal to Aiuericus; Little Dinah, bv Kager, out of St. Bees, in foal to Clonniell: St. lima, by St. Simon, out of Sterling Love, in foal to Fariman, and Grand Gcraldine. by Desmond, out of Grand Marnier, In foal to The Gull. There are five yearlings at Glencairn. which are very forward, and the same can be said for four foals, two of which are by Clonniell and one each by Chaucer and Cerasus. Of the yearlings" the most taking is the fine, upstanding Colorado, bv Lesterlin. out of Sabine Queen, which displavs much power, lione and quality. Probably the earliest to come to hand will be Ladkin. a brown colt bv Lesterlin. out of Pearl Set. which is built on rare lines and bears a striking likeness to his 'sire, whose death was a serious loss vto the Irish stud. Vast improvements have been carried out in the arrangements at Glencairn since Dr. Walter Russell assumed the reins of .management and verv likelv there is not in the United Kingdom a bettor-ordered establishment. One important addition is a fully-equipped surgery and on an Isolated portion of the estate a hospital is being erected on the most up-to-date lines. Orbicular in a Star Role: Defeats Meelick in a Tremendous Finish in Handicap at Santa Anita Park ORBICULAR IN A STAR ROLE. Defeats Meelick in a Tremendous Finish in Handicap at Santa Anita Park. Los Angeles. Oil.. December 30. The defeat of .Meelick bv Orbicular today in the fourth race, at six and one-half furlongs, was a source of bitter disappointment to the public and also to owner S. C. Hildretli. who sent a numler of heavy commissions into the ring on his colt. Shilling, who rode. Meelick, claims that he was over-confident and grew a little wireless in the final eighth when Meelick appeared to have his opponents well beaten. Orbicuiar's victory was not unexpected by a few dharpsl-ooters. among them being Tom Shaw, who won handsonielv on the race. Orbicular was badly outpaced to the stretch. Iiut in the final eighth iie closed up ground fast and finished with a meteoric rush, overwhelming 'Meelick in tl-c last few strides. C. B. Reid retaliated on Eugene Mayno today when the latter's horse. Whidden. won the second race, bv running the gelding up from SoOO to $000. but Mavne retained the gelding. The latter bid up Ueid's liorse. Ben Trovato. yesterday. Today was draw-in day. only twenty-six books taking stands, a falling off of five from the last cut-in. This is owing to the fact that a number of peneilers have lost heavily in the last three days. George Rose is confined to his home with a light attack of the grippe, and will not be out for a few days. Seymour Rentier is also on the sick list and was not present today. The third race, which was won by Seymour Beut-ler. was also productive of another sensational finish, in which he beat Adriuche by a short head in a fierce drive. The winner ran an excellent race, coming through fast in the stretch and finishing resolutclv under a terrific drive. Stirred Up at New Orleans STIRRED UP AT NEW ORLEANS. Xew Orleans. La.. December :50. "When the proposed race meeting at the Suburban race course in Jefferson1 Parish opens on January 10 I will positively enforce the Locke law to the letter." said District Attorney L. II. "Mafrero today in discussing Joseph A. Murphy's plans for a meeting across the river. "Of-course, if the racing can be conducted so as not' to violate the law there will be no Interference on tlie part of any of the authorities, but I will make it a point to see that the law is rigidly enforced." President A. Rouprieli of the Suburban Bacing Association today confirmed the story that Judge Murphy would Inaugurate a racing meeting at the Suburban track in Jefferson Parish on January 1(5. He said that while Murphy would be presiding judge, he (Rouprieli) would have full charge of the management. He said that while Borne Resness would be interested, he would have no active direction in the management. Rouprieli feels, confident that they can operate within the confines of the Locke law. asserting that the best of racing would be furnished, and that the association would not tolerate bookmaklng of any kind, and that the Locke law would be strictly enforced. He said that they did not exnect to make a world of money out of the meeting, but lie thought if it was conducted on the right basis they could make some money out of it. Reported Sum Paid for Sir Martin REPORTED SUM PAID FOR SIR MARTIN. Xew York. December :X). -It is now rumored that John E. Madden received $7.1.000 for his crack two-year-olds. Sir Martin and Edward, but that only $60,000 In cash was paid by Mr. Wimins. leaving $15,000 to be paid out of the first or second stake won by Sir Martin in one or the other lug English features to which he is eligible. It is also said that John Huggins was asked to: train these star two-year-olds for their campaign in England, for which service lie was to receive forty-five per cent, of their winnings. Mr. Huggins, who is no longer a young man and is a wealthy horseman himself, declined the offer and the colts were turned over to Black-well, at Newmarket. Reiwrts from Jamaica say that racing at Kingston is flourishing, the attendance large and the interest In the sport at fever heat. The American horses racing there are performing in excellent style and capturing the majority of the purses. 1 The Oneck Stable has changed its quarters, having i moved to the old Joyner barn at Sheepshead Bay.; where trainer Karrick will have the advantage of being able to train indoors during the bad weather, as there is an eighth of a mile covered way around the stable. Close Finishes at San Antonio CLOSE FINISHES AT SAN ANTONIO. San Antonio, Tex.; Deewnlier ."0. Today's deceptive track was responsible for numerous upsets and defeats of the best-backed choices in several of the races. The failure of Cooney K. was a stunner. There was a reasonable excuse for his defeat in the fact that he was almost thrown at the start. Finishes were close, that between Haughty. Stoic and Grenade being a thriller. The latter was best and with a 'better send-off would have won. The closing race also resulted in a close fit. Dick Redd taking the nurse in the last stride from Adesso. due to carelessness on the part of Pickens. Immediately on the announcement by Judge Murphy that lie would conduct the meeting at Suburban Park, ibeginning January 16. fully ninety per cent, of the horsemen here made applications for stall room. Pressure is now being brought to lear to start tlie meeting on January 5). 'but Judge Murphy is of the opinion that everythiifcr would not be in thorough readiness on that date, and rather than begin in crude fashion will delay one week longer. He will arrive in Xew Orleans on Tuesday next and assume active charge of arrangements at once. Favorites Sweep the El Paso Card FAVORITES SWEEP THE EL PASO CARD. El Paso. Tex., December o0.
