Kv.. Mav 11!. — The running of the Baahford Manor Stake*, one f the old time fixtures, this itlwmai confirmed Joe Morris' good form ami entitles him to take precedence over tlie youngsters that have up to tl.e present shown in these parts. Eleven owners accepted the issue for their colts. King Solomon, because of his even impost with lee Morris, was thought to hold his recent conqueror ■aft and invited the hulk ot speculation, hut Joe Morris thoroughly doiiwnsiratod thai his recent trie-tory over King Solomon was no tluke by the impres sive manner in which he disposed of him and other opponents when it eainc to the deciding drive. During the early running King Solomon and Duqucsm had maintained a speedy pace and measured strides for three lurlongs he tare being joined bv .loo Morris. When fully straightened out for the stretch racing. Page urged the latter mildly and the colt, respond ing in gaim fashion, dashed by the leaders with an patent ease and won casing up. King Solomon, after disposing of Dmpiesue. had to be driven out hard Hi retain second place from the fast coining Douau. There was considerable Interference, always present in tlie two year old scrambles here when the number of starters reaches large proportions and it accounted for the failure of Eye White and Frank ;. Bona to finish closer up. E\e White ran a splendid race considering the amount of interference he had to overcome and may reverse this running with the winner. W. I*. Schulte*s colors were carried to victory on two occasions during tlie afternoon ami us liotli his representatives. King Olympian and Gliding Belle, were outsiders in the betting, then-backers, composed mostly of local people, were richly rewarded. Gliding Belle won the free liancli cap. in which four other useful handicap horses started, including the high-priced Direct. Dr. Bark lev. whieh finished third in this year's Kentucky Derby, went out into a long lead soou after the start, but the Schulte fillv stuck to hfin closely am! passed him in the final furlong. The closest finish of the afternoon came with the running of tiie fifth race, when Marbles just lasted hng enough to get to the finish iu advance of Gypsy King and Merrick. Gypsy Kins was licst. hut re uuires strong riding, which accounted for his failure to get into a prominent position until after the greater part of the race had ln-en run. News that the Arkansas legislature had adjourned without votiHg on the Wadley bill, which weald ha\e given raeing to Hot Springs, was a severe blow io Many horsemen who had built hopes on Hot Borings as tie future haven for their oiierations. Matt I. Winn also expressed his regrets over the failure to re -establish racing at Hot Springs, for. while Juarez. Mr. Winn and Secretary I.ymau Davis will leave at the close of this meeting for New York, whole tlie stakes and other details of the coining Juarez racing will be gone over. When this business is fullv straightened out the gentlemen will leave for Juarez to superintend the construction of the plant, which is to he finished by Thanksgiving day. They will return east in ample time for the opening of the Empire City track. Joekey V. Frazier, formerly in the service of D. T. Its liistory for more than a century has Iieen a not unimportant pan of tic history of England. Parliament adjourns in honor of the day of its decision and from the king ■own iu all gradations of society every loyal Briton who can do so is present to hail the victor. Where-i iit the gallant thoroughbred is known an Epsom Derby winner is deemed chief among horses and proud Is the man who can exult ill the possession of the victor in a struggle for the Blue Ribband of the Turf. The one hundred and thirty-first Derby will lie run one week from next Wednesday. It promises to lie a sensational contest. The unexpected defeat of Biyardo in the Two Thousand deposed him from the BeUV tlan of favorite and gave that place to King Edward's Mitioru. Still Bnyardo nss a host of admirers who think lie was not entirely fit when he m t his first defeat and that he will redeem himself in the Derby. Then the American crack. Sir Martin, has la en heavily backed and the certainty that he will start gives an International tinge to the great race and will make the result almost as impatiently awaited in this country as in England itself. PIMLICO MEETING CLOSES- GREAT ATTENDANCE WITNESSES EFFENDIS VICTORY IN THE PREAKNESS STAKES. Good Colt. Statesman. Breaks Down in the Race — Red River and St. Jeanne the Only Winning Favorites. Baltimore. Met, May 12. -It was a day full of sensation-,, this w indup of the Pilule o spring meeting. The Preakness Stakes, a revival of one of Baltimore's oldest stakes, was won by a despised outsider. Statesman, a horse for which 920,099 wis refused early in tin spring, broke down in ; he race and will never race again and the hit. Washington Steeplechase was espial id by a jumper that was mid in the auddeck on Monday for $65. Enough excitement surely for one afternoon. The Preakaeas was the stellar attraction of the meeting ami Baltimore society and horse folk showed their interest in the event by turning out iu larger numbers than on any previous day of tlie meeting, with the exception perhaps of last Saturday. Fash ion Plate, which had been shipped over from New-York to start in tlie race, was tlie choice with the horsemen and public as well. The good reports of Us work at Bassnshcad Bay earned tor the colt many friends. The result proved the greatest kind of a surprise, the winner turning up in Kffendt, which ni.'de a runaway allair of the race and won bv a length. Fashion Plate was the ope thai tarnished what contention there was. He dropped brto s 1 place BOSa after the start ami remained there throughout. Smith took the colt unnecessarily wide whil-rounding the far turn and this probably cost him the victory, for in the stretch his mount moved up with a game effort and at tie furlong post it appeared as if he might win. Effendi. however, hid a bit left and in tlie last sixteenth drew away again. Something happened to Statesman on tlie llrst turn, where there was a jam. aud tlie . ii diopped back. He labored along until well iu tip-homestretch, where he faltered and went to his: knees and •unseated Dugan. Minoru. la now a firm favorite for the Epsom IK'rby. to lie run May 20. There is steady supiHirt for the American. Sir Martin, which will be ridden by Walter Griggs. It is the BaslUb expert opinion fliat as long as Minoru keeps well, nothing will prevent him following up the victories of Persimmon ami Diamond Jubilee in the greatest of all races. 'Die Prince of Wales was an interested Spectator of the reception accorded to Minoru's success, but should the colt win at Epsom the scene would, indeed, be difficult to portray. Her" js the tabulated pedigree of Minoru. which should be of interest to American readers: The times, aside from Minoru's. were: Heath Hteh-Weight Handicap, won by Sixty II. . five rarion* in SB*!: Selling Plate, won by Miss Ellen, four fur longs in 4S*: Bretby Handicap, won by Paddingtou. six furlongs in 1:121. The opiuion or Mr. Whitney's colt. Sixty IL. is that he is "a fine, rangey and speedy fellow, hut not to be fully trusted, because inclined to roguish-ness." It Is an interesting fact that Mother Siegel th» dam of Minoru. gave birth to a brown foal by Count Selkotulierg lust about the time that Minoru was winning the Two Thousand Guineas. No one will lie more gratified at the horse's splendid victory than Colonel Hall Walker, who bred Minoru and leased him with five others as yearlings to the king. Minoru is still another brilliant product of the Tall; Stud. Klldare. Ireland. * Of Bavardo Allison says In the Sportsman: "He will be a very different horse on that dav if all goes well with him. and he is exceedingly well suited to the course. On the other hand Minora uas trained to the hour today and cannot be made better for Epsom: indeed. Marsh will ad ieve a lust possible if lie sends him to the post for the Derby as fit as be now is." It is explained that Glasgerion was struck out of the Two Thousand Guineas and Derby becasse he was not good enough to win ami not because his legs have failed. . George Stern, the French crack iockev. will ride Louviers in the Epsom I erbv. W. Raphael's big bay colt, by Isinglass — St. Louvaine. was an early beginner last year and won the Zetland and Coventry Stakes with his first starts. He has been well supported and ran an excellent race in the Guineas. As the natural result of the modification of rac ing fixtures in France retarding the Grand Prize of Paris and the international fortnight at Atiteuii. the Societe Sportive d'Eucouragement has changed the date of the Prix du President de la Republlquc. formerly decided on the second Sunday in Julv at Maisons-Lallitte. to the Sunday immediately following the Grand Prize of Paris, so thai the English horses and their traveling companions who come over for the racing at Auteuil or Loaseaasipa may have a chance of winning the $20,000 which accompany the work of art given bv M. Fallieres to the owner of the winner. The race, over a mile and font and a half furlongs, is open to three-vear-ohH and upward, including mares ami geldings, at weight lor age. without penalties or allowances, irrespective of nationality, with an entry of $200. half forfeit. During a career scrupulously beuest, Morny Cannon rode in 8.938 races and won 1.S91 of them. A curious racing point has been raised in Germany. Anklang. a horse that last season was trained at Bockhainpton. through running a dead heat for the Boulogne Grand Prize, earned a ten-pound extra for the Hamburg Grand Prize. In the latter event the stewards ruled that as he made a dead heat, the horse was only entitled to carry half the penalty. Tlie horse won and a ■aatsesuenl objection was overruled, though we understand that an appeal has beep made to the I'nion Club of Germany. The time. 1:37*. made by MiiKiru in winning the Two TkeSSaad Guineas, is the fastest vei made in the lac-. The going was perfect, and the competl-tors were assisted liv a strong "following" breeze.
