SPOILED BY BAD WEATHER HEAVY RAIN AFFECTS LOUISVILLE RACING AND ATTENDANCE UNFAVORABLY. Crystal Maid Takes the Louisville Handicap in a Close Finish of Four — Irfaneh Mends Her Ways. Louisville. Ky.. May 20.— Unfavorable weather marred today's racing and was responsible for tin-poerwl attendance of tin- meeting. Ike track, on ai count of tlic steady drenching it received, rc-MkM a mortar lied and caused withdrawals of tnanv prospective starters. S| eculatiou fell off considerably, but as most of the winners were strongly supported, the favorite backers profited handsomely. The Ijouisvillo llandicaii. at three-quarters, having a net value of $1,300 to the winner, resulted in one of tlie closest finishes ever witnessed here, and brought about disagreement with the ludges in regard to their pssrlasi. crystal Maid. Charlie Enst-inan. Sea Swell and Al Mullcr lauded at the fiuisn so closely grou'ied that no one outside of those on a direct line was in a positiou to attempt a statement as to the winner. Crystal Maid, which had moved up M the outside with a great rusli. was given the purse. Charlie Eastman second and Sea Swell third. To many, including those who were in the press stand, ft appeared as if Al Muller. on the extreme inside, had lasted lone enough to outstay Sea Swell, and that Crystal Maid had just nipped out Charlie Kastman for third place. The showing of T. M. Creep iu this race was disappointing and it is likely that he has not recovered from his recent illness. Irfaneh. which had been transferred from the W. J. Young stable into that of Jack Baker after her recent poor showing, made the others in the second race appear cheap by the handy manner in which she won from Tom McGrath and Marbles. The latter was claimed out of the race by I.. Thompson, acting supposedly for M. C. Moore, but after the flllv was delivered to him. tiainer Miller Henderson protested to the judges that the claim was irregular and by witm sses will try to show that Thompson had been given $5o to claim the tilly for an outside person. The judges are investigating the case and will rule on it tomorrow. The handicap at a mile and a sixteenth had to be declared off on account of the many scratches and a selling race at a mile and seventy yards was substituted. Alice won over Lady Vie. with Green-bridge, recently acquired by II. G. Kedwell. iu third place. Tie- Fad repeated his hollow victory of his last previous start on a muddy track, while Tom Hay-ward, in the (losing race, had no difficulty in proving his superiority over the poor band that opposed him. Tlie mishap to Wintergreen sustained yesterday has eliminated him as a starter in the I.atonia Dcrbv. There are divers opinions as to the extent of the colt's injury. Some contend that there is nothing more serious with the colt than a split hoof, while others maintain that he is also suffering from a sprained ankle. Owner Kespess was not at the track today and authentic information concerning the colt's condition could not be obtained. Last night Mr. Kespess stated that it would be at least five months before it was probable that the colt would again be put in training. With Wintergiccn an absentee from the I.atonia Derby, that event appears at the mercy of olamhala. which will only have Plate Glass and Warticld for itonslbly dangerous opponents. Jockey Powers, who was to have ridden Wintergreen. has been engagcil by \V. -J. Young to pilot Plate Glass or Wartiehl. whichever he may choose to ride. W. F. Schulte has reconsidered his intention of shipping to New York and will send his horses to I.atonia. King's Plate Probable Field. KING'S PLATE PROBABLE FIELD. Toronto. Out.. Sir Martin did a well-paced mile and a quarter spin at Newmarket Tuesday in preparation for his Derby effort. An English brokerage firm iu Flushing. Maskette Takes The Ladies Stakes.: Roseben Runs Unplaced to Chapultepec--Racing at Belmont Park Next Monday. MASKETTE TAKES THE LADIES STAKES. Roseben Runs Unplaced to Chapulteoec — Racing at Belmont Park Next Monday. New York. May 20.— Maskette. queen of the 111 lies, won the forty-first running of the famous Ladies Stakes, at odds „f 1 to 4. from Lady Bedford. Field Mouse and Affliction, the last named 1k-ing ■ second string in James It. Keeue's entry. The brilliant quartette finished In the order named in 1 :1! . which is the fastest time ever recorded for the stake. There was eager curiosity on the part of everyone present to see the renowned young mare, and her appearance on the track was greeted with cheers and handelapping. Inclined to frac-tionsness while turning postward directly in front of the grandstand. Butwell yelled at her and tlie crowd, taking umbrage thereat, railed after him: "Don't call that tilly mimes.'' In the actual racing Maskette singled out early and made the running bv an unnoicssarilv wide gap. She appeared to fully extend herself as Lady Bedford loomed up menacingly when beginning the final furlong, but there was never anv need of Butwell's display of overanxiety in the closing strides. Lady Bedford's sinsational closing sprint thrilled the spectators, while Field Mouse and Affliction ran like non-stay ers. There was a rumor in circulation liefore the race that Maskette was lame and on tlie verge of a breakdown. It was apparent that she had been under serious suspicion of unsoundness during the winter, for both ankles showed marks of having la-en punch fired. While an abnormally giowthv two-year old the peerless Disguise filly did not seem unduly big as a three-year old. Moreover, she was decidedly light flanked in comparison with last year, though stripping very fit. When asked last week why le did not send Maskette out In a preliminary public trial for today's big stake. Rowe replied: "If she is going to break down I'll have it occur in a stake, not in a cheap purse race." Her owner. James R. Keene. was not present to see Maskette's victory. Chapultepec scored in tlie Norwood Selling Stakes from seven others, including Roseben. which ran a singularly poor race. Dreamer, the runner-up. unexpectedly tired when seemingly certain of victory three strides from the finish. August Belmont announced after the races that an extra day's racing would be given by the Westchester Association next Monday, that the attendance warranted it and furthermore that the practice would be kept up and the association would probably give additional extra days as the meeting progresses. Monday's program will contain one race of $800 added and one of $000 added and four of $400 added. The cold threatening weather had a deterrnut effect on the attendance, not more than 4. (MM) being sres nt win n the bugle called the horses to the liost in tne Ladies Stakes, John E. Madden confirmed the report of his having received a cablegram to the eirect that Sir Martin had worked a Derby trial of one and one-quarter miles in 2:oS at Newmarket yesterday. He denied the story of his having cabled to Loudon a $10,000 bet on his colt at the prevailing odds, saying that he was quite satisfied with what would be his share of the stake in the event of his winning. Mr. Madden remarked also that J. B. Haggin's decision to scud the entire yearling production of Eliin-ndorf to England to sell, in the event of Sir Martin's victory iu the Derby, was very gratifying. Infanta, cut down at the Pimlico meeting, has been destroyed. C. earner, who rode in the novice race today, is a brother of the well-known jockey. Garner. The last race at seven furlongs on the pn gram for next Saturday over the straight course, has been changed to tlie same distance over the regular course. Mr. August Belmont has called a conference for two O'clock Friday afternoon in his office, at which the lacing reporters of the New York morning dailies have been invited to attend. Santa Anita To Open In Fall As Usual.: George Rose Sends Instructions to Los Angeles to Have Track Made Ready for Racing. SANTA ANITA TO OPEN IN FALL AS USUAL. George Rose Sends Instructions to Los Angeles to Have Track Made Ready for Racing. Los Angeles. May 20. — That Santa Anita Park will open for racing next fall as usual, in spite of the recent enactment of adverse legislation iu this state. Is indicated bv instructions telegraphed here yesterday from San Francisco bv George Rose, one of the directors of the track. Rose instructed the track superintendent to have the plant made ready for racing in the fall and authorized the announce-uient that the meeting will lie on an extensive scale. It is said that betting will be by the New York oral method. Rose is quoted as saying that the betting question will have to take care of itself. Ed Corrigan Gives Up Hawthorne. ED C0RRIGAN GIVES UP HAWTHORNE. A quit claim deed was filed in the Cook County recorder's office Wednesday in which Ed Corrigan and his wife conveyed their equity in three-quarters of the Hawthorne race track to ex-alderman Thomas Corey far $20.00o. Of this sum. Mr. Corrigau received but $2,000 in cash. $24,000 going to pay a note made by him. indorsed by Mr. Carey and held by Foreman Bros. Banking Company. Tlie Hawthorne property comprises 100 acres be. tween Thirty-fifth and Thirty ninth streets and south Forty-eighth and Fifty-second avenues. The other one-quarter interest is owned by Richard Fitzgerald. A. S. Trude held a mortgage of $.S0. HM on the property and Carey ■ second mortgage for $40,000. When Carey received notice from the bank a few-days ago that the note fell due May 24. he tele-graphed Corrigau. asking hiiu what he was going to do about it. Corrigan replied that he could not meet it and asked Carey to' take care of the note and he would convey to him his interest iu the |UO|KTty. Hence the deal, which was necessary because recent financial reverses growing out of so-called reform legislation have taken nearly all of Mr. Corri-gan's ready money and ability to raise more. Tlie veteran was in good health and spirits and was more worried over Mrs. Corrigan's condition than his own financial health. He has gone back to Lexington, where Mrs. Corrigan is ill iu St. Joseph's Hospital, but is much better than she was. Tlie deal by which John W. Gates seeks to get control of the Corrigan holdings in the City Park track at New Orleans will. Mr. Corrigau thinks. be made more equitable by the courts, or settled in a fair way. Mr. Corrigan's Kansas city property is in the best hands and condition of all his holdings, but the turf will hardly see much more of him iu an active way. Thomas Carey, when iu politics, was also interested in racing and owned the New City Stable. He still loves the sport and has grown rich in late years. He is also less interested in politics than in the old days and is president of the American Brick Company. When asked what he meant to do with Hawthorne Mr. Carey said: "Leave it as it is and wait until the public gets a little sense." Corrigan's Reply In Gates' Suit. CORRIGAN'S REPLY IN GATES' SUIT. Lexington. Ky.. May 20. — Edward Corrigan returned this morning from Chicago. Attorney John T. Shelby, acting for Mr. Corrigan. has filed a cross bill in answer 10 tlie suit recently ibroughl by John W. Gates. Mr. Corrigan In the cross bill admits that he made a note for sixty days for $."58,500 to Gates: that the money was used by Gates in buying for 1dm MB shares of stock of tin-New Orleans Jockey Club: that to further secure Gates lie gave him as collateral 100 more shares of the same stock: that he was required to pay a usurious rate of interest: that Gates took advantage of his illness in New Orleans and notified him on January 27 that the- stock would be sold February 1; that he was unable to have himself re pre - ■eated at the sale at that time: that he has onlv the statement of Gates that the stock was sold for the sum of $2,418 and that this sum is not reason able value for the stock: that he does not know by whom or to whom the stock was sold by Gates: that he believes it was I ruse to deprive him of the stiwk and to force Dim to pay an extraordinary sum. He prays the court to order Gates to return the stock to him' upon payment of $38,560 and the leial rate of interest, or to give him judgment against Gates for the par value of 485 shares, which would be $38,500. Cal.. lias been abandoned. It has been known all along that the proposed track at Tia .luana would materialize only in the event of no racing in California. The plans of its projectors were based on the elimination of California from the racing map. While the Barnes of Harry Brolaski. Clem Creveling and others more or less known on the turf have been mentioned in connection with the venture, it is known that these men were merely acting in behalf of others who for various reasons desired to remain in the background. It is stated that men of influence and wraith were in reality behind the enterprise, and that their plans contemplated the establishment of an American Monte Carlo and sporting headquarters at Tia .luana. with racing as an Incidental attrae-tioii. If racing fails to flourish iu California, it is probable that the Tia J nana proposition will be revived. Prominent People Interested. PROMINENT PEOPLE INTERESTED. Salt Lake City. Utah.
