Big Crowds at Fort Erie: Patronage on Second Day Exceeds Expectations of Management BIG CROWDS AT FOBT ERIE PATRONAGE ON SECOND DAY EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS OF MANAGEMENT. Delegation from Latonia Helps to Swell the Attendance Cavo Adsum Wins Principal Race J Selling Race War On. Buffalo. X. Y.. July C. The surprising feature at Fort Eric this afternoon was the attendance. While there was a decided falling oft from the banner crowd of yesterday, still, the number of people that turned out to witness the sport, far exceeded the fondest expectations of the management. The 2.000 regulars that liave been following the Canadian circuit this spring were reinforced by the arrival of the Latonia delegation this morning from Cincinnati. Speculation was brisk and a majority of the races were keenly contested. There were no stake features, selling conditions attending nearly all the races. The best contest of the afternoon came with the running of the fourth race, in which Mome horses of fair class went to the post. While the race was keenly contested all the way, it was not until the llual sixteenth that Cave Adsum. the favorite and eventual winner, loomed up as a dangerous factor. The pace throughout was exceedingly fast, the lirst mile being run in l:3Si and the mile and seventy yards iu 1:4."!. What promises to develop into a lively selling race war was started today when Guy Gray, owner of Uncle Jiinmie Gray, boosted liob It., winner of the two-year-old race. $500 over his entered selling price. Gray also tilted Vesme .$400 over his entered selling-price. Itoth horses were protected by their owners and bought in at the usual advance of $.". Frank McCain; arrived from New York this morning with Ragman, lie will linish the season on. the Canadian circuit. Kobert Tucker got in from Louisville this morning. He will remain here for the present and will go to Saratoga later on. Jockey Bramiou was an arrival from I.atonia. The delegation that got in from Cincinnati this morning numbered close to :0u. Among the prominent ones were John Fay. W. A. Walsh. Harry Laudcman and Fred Melter. Jockey Lynch, who rode Economy in the steeplechase, got a bad-looking fall at the jump directly in front of the grandstand. He was rendered unconscious, but was able to walk off the field after regaining his senses. Waldo Being Reserved for Saratoga WALDO BEING RESERVED FOR SARATOGA. New York, July C. The reason Charles L. Harrison did not start his good colt. Waldo, winner of the Juvenile and Laureate Stakes at Belmont Park sllid the Manhanset and Tremont at (Jravesend. in the Great Trial at Sheepshead Bay Saturday was that the son of I'lanudes is in temporary retirement. Mr. Harrison declared on the eve of the running of the Tremont that whether the colt won or lost he would be laid by until the Saratoga meeting. He is adhering unswervingly to that determination. Mr. Harrison wants Waldo to get to the Saratoga races in first-class condition, because he is acutely anxious to win the Saratoga Special, a race in which it seems reasonably certain that James R. Keene will start kis crack Ben Brush colt. Sweep. The sportsmanlike character of the Special appeals to Mr. Harrison. He will regard such a race a fair test of the qualities of Sweep and Waldo, because tiie two colts will carry scale weight if they meet. Neither will be penalized tor earlier successes. James Gaffncy, the .friend of 'Mr. Harrison who purchased Alfred Noble from him recently for $15,-1100, would like to own Waldo, but Mr. Harrison does not care to part with the two-year-old. Mr. Harrison, who is a breeder of thoroughbreds, realizes that Waldo has a future in the stud. And if the I'lanudes colt, far and away the best son of bis sire that lias yet come to the races, makes a first-class reputation as a three or four-year-old. he will lc especially valuable. Alfred Noble is a good horse and a tine individual, but when he is through racing lie will be valueless. He is a gelding. Alfred Noble is to have one more race at Sheeps-liead Bay. The big Garry Herrmann horse will start next Saturday in the Long Island Handicap at one mile and a furlong for three-year-olds and over. If Alfred Noble makes a creditable showing in this rr.ee he may start at Winkers iu the Empire Citv Handicap, a $5,000 race at one mile and an eighth that will attract the best handicap horses in training. Samuel H. Harries Goes to Stud SAMUEL H. HARRIS GOES TO STUD. New York, July C. Samuel H. Harris, the seven-year-old son of Sir Walter and Liudula. has been shipped to Montreal. Canada. He is destined for the Canadian National Stud, having been donated to the breeding bureau by his owner, 1'. II. Sullivan. Jerry Carroll handled Samuel II. Harris during his racing career and won many races with the horse. On breeding and individuality Samuel II. Harris should make good as a sire. Here is the record of Samuel H. New York. July G. Spindrift, whose colt by Hamburg brought $".100 at the Sheepshead Kay yearling Kilos of yesterday, has been mated this year with Yankee, a Hanover stallion closely related to Hamburg on his dam's side. Elliot C. Cowdin. owner of the mare, will mate her with Hamburg next spring if Harry I'ayne Whitney consents. Mr. Cowdin's Counterpane, a fast three-year-old filly out of Homespun, is coming to the races again. This filly, racing under the silks of the Newcastle Stable by virtue of a lease, defeated Harrigan at Sheepshead Hay last summer. The lease expired last fall and Mr. Cowdin sent Counterpane to Brookdalc, where she was bred to Hamburg last spring. When Counterpane conies up from Hrookdale she will enter the stable of T. C. McDowell to be trained and laced under his direction. High Private Now Doing Well HIGH PRIVATE NOW DOING WELL. New York, Julv G. High Private, the winner of last winter's California Derby at Oakland, will not race until the Saratoga meeting. High Private was so sore after the Brooklyn Handicap, in which he ran disappointingly, that F. A. Forsythe. his breeder and owner, blistered him and ordered trainer Colston to rest him a bit. This treatment seems to have benefited High Private. The Oddfellow gelding Is doing nicelv at Itelmont Park. Colston does not an-ticiiate ditiiculty in getting him ready for the Saratoga races and predicts that he will show his class there. Licenses Refused in Canada LICENSES REFUSED IN CANADA. Toronto. Out., July G. The stewards of the Canadian Racing Associations are reported to have refused the applications of W. (Rod) Shields. Kay Siience and L. C. Shobe for trainer licenses and of J. Finn and George Mountain for jockey licenses. The Mermaid Stakes Today THE MERMAID STAKES TODAY : The Mermaid Stakes, for thrcc-ycar-old fillies, is one of the first established fixtures of the Coney Island Jockey Club, having first been run over the (Jravesend track when tho club did not ossess a finished track and home of Its own. That year it fell to Capt. Hilly Connor's noted Bonnie Scotland filly. Glldelia, ix very fast lilly, but not the equal of Tliora, which won it the following year, or of Miss Woodford, the winner in 18S:i. Besides these the Mermaid has been won by a wonderful succession of splendid fillies, Duchess, Wanda, Firenze, Bella B She, Yorkville Belie, Afternoon, Gunfire, Beldame, Tradition, Perverse and Stamina all having been high-class race mares. Some difference of opinion might reasonably exist as to which was the best of these magnificent creatures, but the crown of superiority belongs to Firenze or Miss Woodford, closely pressed by Tliora and Beldame. Gunfire and Yorkville Belle, too, were of rare excellence In their prime. Altogether, the Mermaid is an event of many memories. It' will be run for the twenty-third time this afternoon, there having been an interregnum in its running from 1805 to 1002. Its record is as follows: Year. First. Jockeys. Wt. Second. Wt. Third. Wt. Prediction That Fall Meeting Will Be Held, hut That Next Year Will See Sweeping Change. Cincinnati. O., July G. Latonia race track presented a desolate appearance today. T1m? rain which began yesterday contributed to the discomfort of horsemen desirous of shipping to other tracks. They began early iu the day to load what cars could be secured. The eastern delegation were" given preference in the matter of getting away. It required eight cars to transport tiie consignment. Tho uncertainty aliout the Paducah. Ky.. meeting kept a number of horsemen from going there. J. T. Coombs, O. Yaeger. L. Hatchett. A. Bellew and A. Gordon were the most extensive shippers to that point. Coombs shipped 'six horses, including Addax and Guard Rail, which he purchased during the day from their former owners. Several cars of horses owned by various owners will 4ie shipped to Lexington to lie turned out until fall. T. II. Stevens will rest his horses here until the opening of Windsor, where he will campaign them. Charles Hughes will send the remainder of the II. M. Ziegler string, consisting ot Barleythorpe, Ash-well and iMiramar to Saratoga. The Henderson & Hogan racers will be sent to the Empire City track on Thursday next and the J. B. Respcss string will follow the succeeding day. W. O. Joplin will send his limited string to Louisville to lie rested until fall. E. J. Gildersleeve is undecided about shipping, but will probably select Fort Erie. Captain Kennedy, owned by J. J. Flannl-gan. was shipped together with Ray II. to Douglas Park. Louisville, where they will remain until time to lie taken up for winter racing. Prior to his departure this afternoon for New Y"ork,.H. G. Bedwcll was served' with a notice as defendant in a suit for $10,000 damages claimed by '.Mrs. Elizalieth Fischer, witli whom the Bedwell family boarded during the Latonia meeting. Mrs. Fischer alleges that dtedwell slandered and made derogatory remarks concerning her character. Secretary John B. Dillon, who is a candidate for county clerk, a position paying about $12,000 yearly, will devote the next few months to a strenuous canvas for his election. Despite rumors to the contrary there will be at least thirty days of racing here this fall. There are Indications of a sweeping change iu management of Latonia affairs next year. Wants Uncle for the Stud: Catesby Woodford Anxious to Get $30,000 Colt If He Fails to Stand Training WANTS UNCLE FOR THE STUD. Catesby Woodford Anxious to Get $30,000 Colt if He Fails to Stand Training. New Y'ork. July G. If S. C. Hildreth fails to get-the $30,000 Uncle to stand training this season, that horse probably will go into permanent retirement at Catesby Woodford's Raceland Stud. Uncle, now four years old, has not raced since he was a two-year-old. But when in winning form he was a clinker. He straightened Colin in the Saratoga Special of 1007. Uncle spent the winter of 1907-S in California, and when Hildreth brought him cast In the spring of 1!10S he confidently expected to beat Colin witli him. But Uncle went wrong while training for the Withers of 100S and did not get a chance at the distinguished son of Commando and Pastor-ella. Uncle's trouble is with his feet and ankles. The colt has increased enormously In weight in the course of his long term of idleness, and a horse of his size and speed bears heavily upon weak ankles. Hildreth. who has trained many great race horses, says that Uncle is the fastest one that ever bore his colors. Catesby -Woodford raised the horse and wants him to take the place of Sir Dixon, which died last winter after a brilliant career both as a racer and as a sire. Uncle is closelv akin to Sir Dixon on the side of his dam. The Niece. The latter was a daughter of Jaconet, a daughter of Leamington and Maggie It. It., a sister to Iroquois, and the dam of both Sir Dixon and Belvidere. He is by Star Shoot. First Stalwarts to be Sold Today FIRST STALWARTS TO BE SOLD TODAY. New York, July G. Garrett D. Wilson. Charles W. Moore and O. I). Randolph arrived Sunday from Kentucky with a hunch of yearlings that will be sold tomorrow. Mr. Wilson is the owner of the Iroquois Stud, and Senator Joseph W. Bailey, of Texas, is his partner in the ownership of the untried stallion. Stalwart, a Meddler horse that won the Century and Annual Champion races of 10O1. The yearlings Mr. Wilson brought east this season are Stalwart's first crop, and they are a prepossessing lot. Stalwart has improved immensely iu appearance since he retired to the stud. Mr. Moore owns a handsome youngster by him out of Radiance, a daughter of Onondaga and Sungleam. Mr. Moore's prize youngster, however, is a son of Broomstick and Lizzie T. This colt is a strapping brown strikingly like Ben Brush in conformation and action. He was foaled in April, but is uncommonly well developed. Most of Mr. Moore's colts are by the Mere Hill stallion, Ingoldsby. Mr. Randolph will offer for sale no less well-connected a youngster than a half-sister to First Mason. AVise Mason and McCliesney. This fill- is a daughter of Stalwart and Manola Mason, and she is a finely developed miss of the type of her paternal grand-sire. Meddler. Dalmatian Brought $400 as Yearling DALMATIAN BROUGHT $400 AS YEARLING. New York, July 6. Dalmatian, winner of tho first part of the Double Event, also of the Great Trial Stakes, is the two-year-old wonder of the season. Dalmatian is a ringer for his three-year-old stable companion, Fitz Herbert, in conformation and color, but possesses little of the speed of that colt.' He does not seem to get fairly started until he has traveled halt a mile. Dalmatian cost Sam Hildreth only $40(. He bought the Ethelbert colt from Charles W. Moore last year. Mr. Moore had previously acquired him for $100. Dalmatian was a big, awkward yearling by a discredited stallion and nobody seemed to want him. Hildreth did not think him worth much until he won the first part of the Double Event. But todav the Missourian would not part witli Dalmatian for $10,000. He believes the colt will make a first-class three-year-old. Optimistic of the Future: James R. Keene Sees Bright Outlook for American Turf OPTIMISTIC OF THE EUTURE JAMES R. KEENE SEES BRIGHT OUTLOOK FOR AMERICAN TURF. Vice-President of the Jockey Club Declares That Best Days of Racing Axe Before . Us and Not Behind. New York. July 6. Tho personnel and size of the crowd of "holiday race-goers that visited the Sheepshead Bay race course 3-csterday is everywhere the subject of favorable comment. Women were more than ordinarily prominent, and it was an encouraging sight for Itlie future of the sport to see them strolling on the lawns and in the paddock. 'Messrs. Schuyler Parsons, James It. Keene and James Butler today expressed themselves as delighted with the sliowing, and look uivon the future as promising in the extreme. Mr. Butler remarked that a more representative crowd could Jiardly have been gathered. Mr. Keene was especially optimistic concerning the future of the American turf. "We. must have rich stakes and good horses to make the- public enthuse," be said. "I feel assured that the turf is gradually growing into a healthier condition, than It ever was. Many things happened yesterday." continued Olr. Keene, "that contributed to my Arm belief that the (best days of the turf in this country are before instead1 of behind us. Everybody is agreed that 20,000 is a conservative estimate ot the attendance." The Coney Island' Jockey Club lias provided one of tlio best cards of the season for tomorrow, the principal feature being the 'Mermaid Stakes, in which the peerless Maskette is named to start. There is also an important secondary attraction the Spindrift Handicap in which the Oneck Stable's good colt. WEDNESDAY'S FORM SPECIAL: August Peach 30-25-31-22-29-11-50-48-10, Latonia Jockey Club's Affairs LATONIA JOCKEY CLUB'S AFFAIRS. Cincinnati, O., July C Concerning the affairs of the Latonia Jockey Club, the Enquirer makes the following comment: "The track management claims that the meeting was not a financial success. Neither was last fall or the preceding spring, and anyone could go a bit further back than that and the tale would be the same. The public has failed to support the game in the manner that it did formerly. "There seems to be a doubt as to the racing at this once popular course in the future. Much of this comes from the fact that there is a clash between the various Interests that, bound together, control the destinies of the course'. This breach has existed for some time, and it looks now as if neither will give way to the other, and it would be no surprise if one or the other did not sell out. It is claimed tliat the L. and N. Railroad stands ready to buy the course for $300,000. The capital stock Is about $150,000. and this would make each share the pur value of which Is $100 worth double that amount. There is, however, a bonded indebtedness on the track of $."0,000, and this would reduce the value to $l(ii; per share. As I.oiiis A. Cella and his associates are credited with paying $230 a share for their half of S25 shares, it can be seen that tiiey are not going to wax fat on a deal Willi the railroad company. "Inasmuch as the fate of bookmaking in Kentucky is -not known, and will not be known until some time in September, it is hardly probable that any stock in the course will change hands before the Court of Appeals makes its decision."
