Big Race Goes to Maltbie: Extreme Outsider in Betting Wins the Empire City Handicap BIG RACE GOES TO MALTBIE EXTREME OUTSIDER IN BETTING WINS THE EMPIRE CITY HANDICAP. Alfred Noble, Fashion Plate and King's Daughter Among Horses Beaten Field Mouse Runs Fastest Six Furlongs of Meeting. Now York. July 17.' The Empire City Handicap, which succeeds the defunct Brighton Handicap :is thu big metropolitan midsummer racing feature, was won by tin- western horse. Maltbie. at Yonkcr. today in tin- presence nf 15.000 enthusiastic devotees of tie tiirf. The victory of tin- niifasliionably bred Deering gelding was duo to the rare judgment of pace exhibited by jockey Stanley Page, whose patient tactics in reserving his mount hehind the speeding pacemakers, w.s tinally rewarded in sensational fashion. Mnltbio's opposition included sutli formidahh: horses as Alfred Noble. Fashion IMate. King's Daughter and Arondack. and the outcome of the struggle excited widespread interest. The victor was the extreme outsider in the betting, at 20 to 1. hut was bricked witli much conlidence. notwithstanding his preceding poor race at Sheepshend Bay. It is rumored that a coup of considerable pro portions was consummated. The finish was marked liy the public- applause invariably lies towed on the winner of a;iv great turf event hereabout. Alfred .Noble anil Fashion l'late were equal choices In the betting at S to .". until the close, when the former was given the call. McDowell's mare, as well as the McLaughlin lilly. Arondack. had plenty of admirers, but Maltbie was absolutely ignored by the general public His victory, therefore, was not a popular one In the strict sense of the word. In the actual running. King's Daughter was the dominant factor for one mile and held the supposed contenders. Alfred Noble. Fashion l'late and Arondack absolutely safe. Jockey K. Martin, after glancing behind him once in the first furlong of the stretch, went on about his business, seemingly confident of ultimate victory. He did not reckon on and was unprepared for the cyclonic coming of Maltbie. .Martin's effort to stall off Maltble's belated rush was so exhausting that his mount lost second place to the favorite in the last stride. It was a wonderful struggle from start to finish. Not-ivjthstandlng Fashion Plate's forward position in the early running, he was the only contender that seemed to be beaten from the beginning and liefore half of the journey had been covered most of hfs hackers gave up hope, The pace throughout was rather slow. The Kmpire City Handicap, from modest beginnings, was one of the great stakes of 1U0S and is still worth winning and a fixture. Its short history is as follows: Year. Winner. A. Wt. Jockey. Val. The Belmont colors were carried to victory in the tlilrd race by Field iMouse in the fastest time of th. meeting, six furlongs in 1:1". That Mr. Belmont was able to win In America even though he could tiot win in England, was regarded with satisfaction. Calash. Yankee Daughter. Rial to. Alfred Noble. Royliourn and Acrobat were six "good things" that failed to materialize. The support accorded Hie Carman horse in the last race was highly sensational. Towards the close many of the big layers refused to quote a price about him. While Acrobat seemed deficient in speed to a marked degree, his jockey, J. .Butler, was regarded as materially to blnine for his defeat. Donau was equipped with hood and blinkers today. Mr. Gerst's "olt ran without them in his last race. Jockey Butweli. who rode Reyliouru. lodged a claim of foul that was generally regarded as frivolous against Donau. the winner of the fifth race. It was speedily dismissed. J. 0. Follansbee was a visitor at Empire City today. Faimtleroy stands James 'McLaughlin just S5.". He bought three yearlings for $300 at last year's sales and disposed of two of them for $235. retaining today's first race winner. The Best Two-Year-Old Filly So Far Raced This Year : - O. THE BEST TWO-YEAR-OLD FILLY SO FAR RACED THIS YEAR W. CLAY'S BR. F, 2, OCEAN BOUND, BY STAR. SHOOT FLYING SHIP. : Indisputably the queen of the two-year-old fillies of the -year to date is Woodford Clay's Ocean Bound. This fine daughter of Star Shoot was introduced to the racing public in the Fashion Stakes at Belmont Para, May 25, and ran fourth to. Apgerona, Calypte and Grcenvale, at four and a half furlongs In 52-Y-She showed speed in running In second place to the stretch, hut tired and was evidently in that condition of training called short. The education she then received in the actualities of racing was beneficial and she lias since then won every time she has been started. Her second race was in the Criterion Stakes at Gravesend. June 3. There was something In the manner of her running in her first race that had attracted the attention of critical observers and. notwithstanding the fact that the three fillies which had beaten her then were also starters In the Criterion she wont to the post the favorite and justified the preference by leading all the wav and winning by three' and i; half lengths, with Angerona second and Grcenvale third, covering the five furlongs of the race in 1-01V-At the same meeting, June 21, she won the Astoria Stakes in a canter by six lengths from Grcenvale and Calypte In 1:01, and at Sheepshead Bay, July 10, took the Vernal Stakes bv- two and a half lengths with Amelia .Tenks second and Greenvaie third. Fast Running at Fort Erie: Big Crowd Sees Tourenne and Zipango Reduce Track Records ` FAST5KUNNING AT FORT ERIE BIG CROWD SEES T0URENNE AND ZIPANG0 REDUCE TRACK RECORDS. Former Makes New Mark for Mile and Sixteenth and Zipango Cuts Mile and Three-Sixteenths Mark Al Muller Takes Stake Feature of Program. Buffalo. N. Y., July 17. Today's splendid card, featured by the Fort Erie Selling Stakes at six furlongs, and two handicaps une at a mile and a sixteenth- and another for sprinters at three-quarters brought out by far the largest attendance of the I' ort Erie meeting. The" crowd .was regaled with some sensational sport. While the stake race was the headliner from the monetary standpoint, the handicaps furnished the best contests. The mile and a sixteenth handicap especially proved n thriller, the first four at the finish, Tourenue. Green Seal. Grania and Creel, finishing so closely grouped) that the proverbial blanket would, have covered them. The race had its disappointment to many in the poor showing of Meadow, the speedv Texas filly, which, in her previous out. had gained numerous friends by a sterling -performance. In today's race she was given a blundering ride liy jockey Brooks, which largely accounted for her poor showing. Green Seal and Tourenue were the contenders most of the way and the speedy pace they forced caused a reduction of the former track record of 1:45 for the distance liy a. fifth of a second. Royal Onyx, which lias lieen running consistently here, surprised the public by boating Hanbridge in the sprint handicap. Hanbridge. Little Osage ami Centre Shot were the leaders approaching the stretch turn, where Centre Shot liegan to bleed and was forced to quit. She carried Hanbridge and Little Osage out. which enabled Royal Onvx to slip through next to the rail. Hanbridge landed second money a nose before Little Osage and half a length behind the winner. Al Muller showed improvement over previous essays and it proved an easy matter for him to tieat a fair band of sprinters in the stake race, ne was away forwardly, showed the most speed for the entire journey and had a couple of lengths to spare at the finish. Kulford landed 'Second place a small margin liefore Sal Volatile, the favorite. . The tabled history of the Fort Erie Stakes is -as follows: M KSS,rv ,ii,wlnner- A. Wt; Jockey.. Val. Fizer. iu addition to the stake, took down a purse when his good colt. Eye White, toyed with a fair band of two-year-olds and won commandlrigly. Another track record was shattered when Zipango ran the mile and three-sixteenths .in 1:58. reducing the former mark by three-fifths of a second. He was lucky to win. as Reidmoore was much the best, but suffered from poor handling and interference. Apache, showing his old-time good form, cantered away with the purse in the opening race, winning much as his rider pleased. John Carroll was able to win the fifth race after a brief stretch struggle with Steel. After the finish of the closing race, jockey Haynes. the rider of Reldmoore.; complained to the judges that jockey Musgrave on Giles had taken hold of 'Reid-mooro's bridle and steered him wide at the stretch turn. The offlciabv after questioning Musgrave, dismissed the matter. That rider; who arrived todav from Saratoga, returned again to the same placd and will be engaged in riding the Seagram horses during-their preparation for the Saratoga meeting. Starter Dade suspended jockey Leibert for the remainder of the Fort Erie meeting for disobedience at the post while astride Royal Onyx.. Zipnngo was hid up $305 over his entered price of $700, but was retained. Chinn Training for John A. Drake CHINN TRAINING FOR JOHN A. DRAKE. Lexington, Ky., July 17. A. Slertz, who for several years was connected with the training establishment of Thomas Clyde, but who is now in the employ of 1'. T. Better Results at Home than Abroad: Kentuckians See Greater Profit by Selling Yearlings in American Market Review of Seasons Sales BETTER RESULTS AT HOME THAN ABROAD. Kentuckians See Greater Profit by Selling Yearlings in American Market Review of Season's Sales. Lexington, Ky., July 17. The average of $035 per head for twenty-two thoroughbred yearlings from Elmendorf and Kingston Studs sold at Newmarket, in England. Wednesday, by James B. Haggin and Clarence II. Mackay was only $111 in excess of the average of $524 per head for the 21S yearlings belonging to various owners disposed of at the auctions of the Fasig-Tipton Company during the meeting at Shecpshead Bay. Figuring the expense of getting to the sales ring in England anil comparing it with the expense of selling the Kentucky product at New York, the net average for the Haggin and' Mackav yearlings, the pick- of the Elmendorf and Kingston establishments, was less than that obtained by the Americans who sold at home. Clearly the English do nut want American-bred' yearlings, at least not in large numbers. It cannot, in the light of tlie prices paid for the yearlings from the establishment of the late Sir Daniel Cooper, coupled witli tlie record sum of $78,750 for the broodmare Flair, be contended that there is a scarcity of money for thoroughbreds and no market for them in England. The reason for the tardiness of the English in bidding for the American youngsters is probably attributable to the fact that few of the American-bred horses now in that country have come up to the expectations of the trainers in whose hands they have fallen and whose opinions have great weight with the buyers. Racing conditions in this country are gradually and steadily improving and this, coupled with the lesson gathered from the English sales ring, has put into the mouths of American thoroughbred breeders the slogan "Sell at home." There were some few of the consignors to recent Sheepshead Bay sales Who were disappointed in the prices obtained for various individuals, but the majority were well pleased with their averages, and they are certain that there will be improvement In' the market during the September sales period, when something above 200 head will go under the hammer.-The totals and averages for the July period were as follows: Date. No. Sold. Total. Average. June ,50 34 $19,750 $ 580 July 1 31 7.025 272 July 2. 30 9;020 2.10 July :'. 14 2,575 184 July 5 39 34.175 876 July 7 , 39 15,625 400 July 10 25 25,425 1,017 Aggregates 218 $114,105 $ 524 Of these 218 yearlings, 132 were colts and brought an aggregate of $S0,425, while the 80 fillies sold for a total "of $33,770. So tho colts averaged $609 per head as against $393 for Hie fillies. The' fillies generally were not in demand. Eight particularly good1 individuals out of producing mares and popular sires brought $1,000 or more each and accounted for $13.-200 of the total of $33,700.. leaving $20,500 as? an aggregate for the remaining 78. an average of $203 per head. Of tlie 132 colts, 27 Bead brought upward of $1,000 each, $49,350 in the aggregate, leaving' $31,125 for the remaining 105 head, which Was an average of $300 pur head for the ordinary, ones. This shows a healthier state of market conditions at home than might have been expected. The star' colt of the Sheepshead Bay sales was a son of Adam and the first foal of Grace Gumbert, a laughter of Sainfoin and Maid of Mentruofev imported from England to this country as a yearling' and afterwards a winner. This colt tfas a prize winner among the weanlings shown with Adam by; manager Charles MeCracken of the Silllstream Stud at the Blue Grass Fairhere last Angusjt. He was knocked down to J. A. Rennet for $4,100. The next highest price was $3,100, at which figure three coifs were sold. . Two of them came" from Elliot O. Cowdin'S Maplehurst Stud, they being The Spy II., by Disguise II. Semper Paratus, knocked, down to W. E, D, Stokes,- owner' of the I'atchen Wilkes Stock Farm, the big trottlng-horse nursery near this city; arid Katonah, a chestnut colt Irr Hamburg Spindrift, bought by James R. Keclie. the master of Castleton Stud. The other was the bay colt by Ben Brush White nose (dam. of Rose Queen), which was sold out, of the Castleton Stud consignment July 10 to Robert F. Little, the New York financier who is going in for racing more extensively. Only one other brought as mlicli as $3,000 and that was the brother to Notasulga by The Commoner Touch Not,- bought out of the Edenwold Stud consignment by Dapid Dnnlop.- The highest price for a filly was $2,900 for the sister to Pope Joan, by Disguise Editha, sold to John H. Madden out of the Castleton Stud lot. and tlie next highest was $2,800. paid by J. A. Bcnnct. for the half-sister to Smoke.., This was the chestnut filly by Adam out of Virgin Soil in the Millstrcam Stud's offering. Law Enforcement at Yonkers LAW ENFORCEMENT AT YONKERS. New York, July 17. So far as the attitude of the authorities is concerned, racing is going on at Empire City under conditions similar to those that have prevailed at other New York tracks this season. The authorities of Westchester county who are enforcing the law at Empire Cityliclieve In respecting the rulings of tlie courts relative to individual betting. Reformers in Westchester who have become concerned have possibly overlooked the fact that tlie courts have decided that. oral wagers are legal and that settlements in' dash can be made after the races; that a person can quote odds and accept as many wagers as he may sec lit providing he does not make a record of tho transactions: It is a fact that some of the layers who are taking oral bets employ as many as half a dozen men to memorize the transactions " and that these "clerks have a: remarkable capacity due to long experience. A casual observer of the methods in vogue at Empire City would find It impossible to detect the slightest violation of the :iaw-. The race track police havo made operators understand that "loose business'' will result in prompt banishment, and as a sequence the Westchester authorities, though- constantly on the alert, say that they cannot legally interfere with the proceedings. He Is owned by Mr. Falrie. who piso owns Bityardo, Improvements at Empire City IMPROVEMENTS AT EMPIRE CITY. New York. July 17. Jame's Butler Is planning to make further improvements at Yonkers after the finish of tho current meeting, including the installment of a new stewards' stand. The stewards' stand at Yonkers now is one of the old-fashioned sort, witli wide-spreading, eaves that obscure a good por linn of the track. It was all right in the nineties when the late William H. Clark built the Empire City trotting track, but it does not go these days. Patrons of the grandstand want to sec finishes. They see them at Sheepshead Bay because the stewards' and judges' stand a light, steel-framed structure, enclosed by glass does not obstruct their view. Mr. ISutler and Mr. Wlim have worked wonders with the infield of the Yonkers course. The sand dunes which used to offend the eye have been leveled and a luxuriant growth of coarse grass has been coaxed from the sterile soil by diligent ton dressing. It is not generally known, but it Is a fact nevertheless, that James Butler was the man who picked the site of tlie Empire City track as a suitable one for a first-class trotting track. He had the ground on which the course lies surveyed and took an option on the property before Mr. Clark thought of interesting himself in the enterprise. That was when Mr. Butler was still president of tho Fleetwood course. Mr. Butler surrendered his options and his ideas to Mr. Clark when that gentleman indicated that he wanted to build tho course; Mr. Clark went ahead in the big way which characterized all his undertakings and built the Yonkers course at n cost of over a million dollars. The cost was uncommonly heavy because it was necessary to make an embankment of seventy-five feet for the upper turn. There is no better grandstand on the metropolitan circuit than the one at Yonkers. Tlie Empire City property cost Mr. Clark from $1,750 to $2,500 an acre. Its present value per acre Is about $0,000.
