Donau Wins Wakefield: William Gerst's Smart Youngster Beats Good Juveniles in East DONAU WINS WAKEFIELD WILLIAM GERST'S SMART YOUNGSTER BEATS GOOD JUVENILES IN EAST. Nimbus Takes Handicap Feature of Empire City Card at Short Odds Ida D.. Sir Neddam and Bobbie Kean Are Winning Outsiders. New York, July 22. Douau, William Gerst's Rood two-year-old, captured the Wakefield Stakes at Yonkers. 'today and incidentally ran the fastest live sind a half furlongs registered during the meeting, when he covered the distance in 1:07. This robust youngster's long and uninterrupted campaign of six months culminated on this occasion in the most brilliant effort of his extraordinarily busy career: Including today's race, Donau has started twenty-nine times since he began racing in January. lie lias been contending with the best of his age in training at the various tracks where he has raced, and his record to date is 12 firsts, 0 seconds, 8 thirds and 4 times unplaced. Notwithstanding the exacting nature of the campaign to which be has been subjected, the Wools-thorpe colt stripped bigger, bodily, than when he "began racing. Donau was opiMsed in the Wakefield Stakes by the pick of the Juveniles in local training. Including Fauntleroy. Reybourn, Charlie Har-grave. Chcrryola. Dullcare. Foursome and Firebox. He dominated the running with such convincing ease that race-goers began to wonder what manner of a horse The Fad could be to have been able to run away from Donau at will, as he did iu their previous meeting. The Wakefield was not truly run. The start was straggling. Dugau, astride Dullcare. being unprepared. The pair immediately became conspicuous by cutting obliquely across the track from the outside to the inside and fouling every horse within reach; The Belmont colt ran literally amuck throughout the first half mile, knocking his opponents alnmt like tenpins.. Fauutleroy and Foursome were the chief sufferers. James McLaughlin, the owner of the former, said that he would make formal coin plaint against jockey Dugau before the stewards. He attributes the loss of the race wholly to Dugan's foul riding tactics. The winner outbroke the others so decisively that it made the start look much worse than it was. Despite the interference, Fauntlerov finished a close-up second, with Iteylmurn a length" away, after having run out on the last turn. Dullcare was separately timed the first three-eighths in Xii seconds, which is phenomenal speed for the slightly uphill course over which the race was run. The tabled history of the Wakefield Stakes is as follows: Year. Winner. A. Wt. Jockev. Val. Uniformly fast time was a marked feature of the afternoon's racing. The cantering mile victory of Nimbus in 1:40?., in the secondary feature, with 117 pounds up. was" considered impressive.' May River and Nimbus, lndh quoted at the prohibitive odds of 1 to 2. were the only favorites to materialize. The remaining four races wore won by well-backed horses at good odds. Sir Neddam and Bobbie Kean were both the mediums of betting coups on an extensive scale. Yankee Daughter, the supposed contender and second choice in the opening dash, was started so palpably unfit that the crowd showed its -displeasure by hooting and hissing Zimmcr's mare as she staggered home many lengths lKdiind her opponents. E. It. Bradley was confident of winning a double with Black Mary and Bad Nc'ws in the fifth and wixth races. In upsetting the stable coup In the former race. Ida D. again showed herself to Jie one of the most consistent in-and-outers on the turf "Bad News had worked a fast mile in preparation for - his nice, and Mr. Bradley told his friends that he would not Have to extend himself at any "stage to lieat the lot opposed to Jilm. Bad News, however, lias grown cunning with advancing years and failed to do his lest. The card 'was .more than ordinarily attractive and the usual big midweek attendance was on hand, despite cloudy and threatening weather. A. G. Blakeley shipped his stable of fourteen racers to Saratoga today. Tom Shaw, the lookmaker, was arrested for auto speeding and did not get to the track until after the third race. Shaw employs an army of helpers under present conditions. Fall Racing Schedule in West FALL RACING SCHEDULE IN WEST. Butte, Mont.. July 22. Small and Donau each ran three and a half furlongs in 40 at Santa Anita, effacing the rtcord of 40 previously to the credit of Carmisa. At the same track Donau ran a half mile in 4G. which took the place of Bessie Macken's 40. made at Dallas, Texas, in 1899. At Louisville Joe Morris ran four and a half furlongs In 52. wiping out the previous record of 53, held by Old England. At La-tonia Moquette ran a mile and a sixteenth in 1:441, equaling the record to the credit of Jtoyal Tourist. The last and most important change was that made by Fltz Herbert, when he ran a mile and five-eighths in 2:45 in winning the Lawrence Realization and supplanted Africander's; previous mark of 2:45. "It might be said," remarks the New York Telegraph in commenting on the running of western horses at. Empire City, "despite some criticism of stables not belonging strictly to this territory, that these horsemen have done as much, if not more, for racing than big stables around New York. They have come on here to win, naturally, and they are in the majority: their horses are fit and well trained, and certainly the Empire City Racing Association is glad to have them and does not believe that these horsemen should be regarded as Interlopers or In any other way except as friends of the turf racing men, pure and simple. "Naturally many big stables desire to rest up their horses at this time, but it is a fact that the Empire City track has not had the horses from around the New York tracks that it should have had. Saratoga appeals, and already many horses have gone there to recuperate at Horse Haven and prepare for the extensive session of racing in August. Rut not all these will race at Saratoga, and a lot of them are as fit to race now as they will ever be, and are as good as the horses that furnish entertainment to the New York racing public at Empire City day after day. "Mr. James Butler has shown himself to be one of the best friends of racing, and the big stables about New York might very well have done better by him. Nothing that could have been asked of Mr. Butler in support of racing but that he has done, and the popularity of the Empire City course is unquestioned." Roseben's Brother a Big Fellow ROSEBEN'S BROTHER A BIG FELLOW. New York. July 22. Paul Rainey has not taken a subscription in the Saratoga Special this season, but Edward Peters has shipped to Saratoga for him a brace of two-year-olds that are at least handsome enough to win that race. One of them. Rousseau, a son of Ben Strome and Rose Leaf, is a brother to Roseben. The other. Voltaire, a son of Watercress and Pillowdex. is a half-brother to the fast but faint-hearted IStriko Out. a Griffon colt for which Herman B. Duryea paid $15,000 while he was still an untried yearling. Rousseau bids fair to make as big a horse as Roseben. Already he is close to sixteen hands high, and he weighs all of 1.050 pounds. He is a powerfully built youngster of fine lnme and muscular development. Peters is giving Rousseau time to develop in order to test Mr. Ralnev's theory that two-year-olds are better for not being put at early racing. But Rousseau has had some stiff work, and he is infinitely sounder than Roseben was at a corresponding period of his career. Roseben liowed Imth tendons before he went to . the post. Konsseau's legs are as hard as steel and he has yet to take a wabbly step. Voltaire is a growtKv colt of the Watercress tvpe. but he looks like a race horse. The only Saratoga race for which Voltaire and Rousseau are eligible Is the Hopeful, and Peters will bend his efforts toward fitting them to meet Ocean Bound and Sweep with some prospect of success in that valuable special. Voltaire and Rousseau are both iu the Futurity at Sheepshead Ray and the Matron at Belmont Park. , Creel is in Winnig Form: Defeats the Minks in Handicap Feature at Fort Erie CREEL IS IN WINNING FORM DEFEATS THE MINKS IN HANDICAP. FEATURE AT FORT ERIE. John E. McMillan, Remaining Contender, Bleeds During- Running of Race Argonaut and Laveno Take Races iriWhich Favorites .Fail. Buffalo, N. Y., July 22. Threatening weather, culminating in a light rain, detracted considerably from the sport at Fort Erie this, afternoon. The attendance, however, was of good proportions and speculation was brisk. The field for the mile and a sixteenth handicap was reduced to three starters, with speculation divided between The Minks and Creel. John E. McMillan, the other starter, attracted but little notice. Creel, under a light impost, made the others look cheap as he went into a long lead from the start. Although The Minks" made a game bid after the first half had been traversed, he weakened in the stretch and Creel won as his rider pleased. John E. McMillan, after being a forward contender Ju the early stages, suffered a hemorrhage and was pulled up at the stretch turn and led off the track, thereby forfeiting third money. In the opening' dash, for maiden fillies, twelve started, and under the good handling that Davenport gave Fair Louise she was able to get up in time to beat out Polly Lee, the early pacemaker. There was a big plunge on Charmian iu this race, but a poor send-off and incompetent handling' accounted for her failure to run up to a fast preliminary trial. Davenport followed up his initial success by landing Argonaut winner- in the second race over Clois-teress. Argonaut showed considerable improvement over his previous out when ridden by Mentry. The latter jockey is coming in for a good deal of adverse criticism on account of his faulty riding. Bob R. was considered best in the third race, but, after being in forward contention for five furlongs, he retired and left Laveno, Fearnaught II. and Brevite to fight it out. They finished in the order named. Sal Volatile found conditions exactly to her liking in the sixth race and sprcadeagled her opposition, winning by a big margin from Dareington, with Dainty Dame third. On her showing today it is patent that Dainty Dame' is iu poor form and in need of a rest. The race for Dominion-breds thoroughly demonstrated Caper Sauce's superiority over Cannie Maid. It was the third meeting of the pair and Caper Sauce has been the victor In each instance. Bilberry, one of the starters in this race, stumbled soon after the start and threw Guy Uurns heavily.- Pat Dunne scored his initial victory of the meeting when The Peer beat. Belle Scott and Mystifier in the closing race. It was a lucky win, as Mystlfier was best and fwlth a good ride would have been tha winner. T. jr.. Green was excused from starting In the sixth race on account of having gotten out of his stall in some mysterious manner during the night. He was pretty well skinned UP from contact with a ifenco before discovered by' early rising stably bands. , .1 .W. Colt was a visitor here this afternoon. He will ship his entire band of steeplechasers to Saratoga next week. . Jockey Crowley Is an" nddltioS to the riding ranks. He came from, Ncfw York andPis under contract to S. J. Kirkman. J. II. Woodford! was among the arrivals today from Kentucky. Toe Y'eager Is again showing good form In picking winners and has been a steady winner, operating from the ground. L. A. Cella returned today and will remain until next Saturday. There is very little interest manifested In the coming Do Lorimer Park meeting in Montreal, arid tho better class of horsemen are frowning on the scheme. Guy Burns was badly shaken up by his tumble from iBillierry. The horse struck him a glancing blow in the head and he had to cancel his remaining engagements for the day. Jack Atkin's Time in Question JACK ATEXN'S TIME IN aUESTION. New York, July 22. There were wide differences of opinion as to the time Jack Atkin made in winning the Fleetwing Handicap Tuesday at Yonkers. The otlieial time hung out was 1:12. Slany of the trainers snapped their watches on the race, and none of them agreed with William H. Barretto. Walter House caught the three-quarters in 1:11, which was one-fifth of a second better than the track record for the distance made last summer by George Odom's Nimbus. John Powers, the new trainer of the big Sain horse, made it 1:11.R, the first half in 45J. George Rowe, a brother of Charlie Rowe and one of the most expert of the watchers of early morning work, made it 1:11?. There can be little doubt but that Jack Atkin has regained his best form, and that he will go on now and fill his engagements at Yonkers and Saratoga. His coming engagements at Yonkers are In the Yonkers and Mount Vernon Handicaps. The Yonkers, a $2,500 race at one mile and a sixteenth, will be run next Saturday, and the Mount Vernon, a $2,500 race at one mile, will be run the following Saturday. Senoria Farm Formally Transferred SENORITA FARM FORMALLY TRANSFERRED. Lexington, Ky., July 22.-r-Confirmation of the reported sale of Senorlta Farm by Captain W. Harry Brown of Pittsburg to L. V. Ilarkness of Cleveland, the master of Walnut Hall Farm, came today through the filing of the deed in the county court here. Senorlta 'Farm, .which last fall was stripped of all the thoroughbred horses in the establishment owned by the late -Captain S. S. Brown, is now to become a part of. Walnut Hall Farm, one of the most famous trotting horse nurseries in the world. At the same time deeds to two other farms just across Newtown road from Walnut Hall Farm were filed by J. II. Parker and E. M. Norwood, respectively, to Collins Marsh of Brooklyn, N. Y. Mr. Marsh is understood to bo a friend of Mr. Harkness and it is generally believed that the purchase was made for him. Haggin to Abandon Breeding HAGGIN TO ABANDON BREEDING. Lexington. Ky., July 22. James B. Haggin, master of Elmendorf Farm, arrived here today from New York to spend several weeks at his magnificent estate. .Mr. Haggin confirms the report published several weeks ago to the effect that he Intends to abandon the breeding of thoroughbred horses. He says that to his notion the sport has received too severe a blow to warrant his continuance. There is now being erected at Elmendorf a large dairy plant and Mr. Haggin says he will devote his, attention to dairy cattle and dairy products more largely than to anything else. There are now at Elmendorf 'seventeen thoroughbred stallions, 190 mares,' about 100 yearlings and something like 150 foals of this year. The process of disposal, principally by sale in foreign countries, is to continue. Few Horses Left at Latonia FEW HORSES LEFT AT LATONIA. Cincinnati. O.. July 22. Tom Hayes, .7. C. Milam and Ed Gildersleeve shipped a carload of horses from Latonia to Windsor yesterday. Tom Stevens has sent his horses to the same place, and Ira Fitzgerald and others will send another carload Fridav. That will leave about one carload, which probably will be shipped on Saturday. The English Jockey Club and all the racing associations having on their programs produce stakes have awakened recently to a condition which causes them great embarrassment. These produce stakes ure many in number, and are among the valuable turf prizes. In the aggregate they amount up to many thousands of pounds. In all these races there has been an allowance for the produce 'Of sires and of dams that, prior to nomination time, had not produced a winner. But there was also another little clause that did not obtrude itself until the advent of. Siessrs. Keene, Belmont, Whitney, Duryea and other Americans last year. Who nominated with great liberality in everything to Which they were eligible. And this little clause. It now seems, gives the allowance to every one of their nominations, in some eases amounting to as much as twelve pounds. The clause referred to reads "for the produce of sires and dams that have not heretofore "produced a winner in the United Kingdom." Except, therefore. In the case of young sires and matrons, the Englisli-breds receive no allowances, while the Americans get all. Among the American nominations are the dams of such horses as Colin. Burgomaster, Sysonby. Fair Play and practically all the English ami French Importations to America in the last dozen years, as well as the produce of American mares exported to this country last autumn. As these stakes have closed for two years in advance, the situation Is embarrassing, and particularly to tin; English breeder clamoring to the Jockey Club, which has not seen Its way out of the difficulty. The stakes have closed and there does not seem" to be anv escape from the situation. There have lx-en several conferences between the associations, urged on by the home breeders and the Jockey Club, but no solution of the situation has been arrived at. nor does one seem possible, except for the Englishmen to trust to luck that even with the allowances the Americans will be beateu. Still Eligible to the Futurity Stakes: Eighty-Nine Youngsters from Which Will Come Winner of Our Richest Race for Two-Year-Olds STILL ELIGIBLE TO THE FUTURITY STAKES. Eighty-Nine Youngsters from Which Will Come Winner of Our Richest Race for Two-Year-Olds. The Futurity Stakes of the present year will bo run under the conditions that have prevailed heretofore, having closed long before the stress of hostile legislation enforced the cutting down in value of stakes and purses. It had an original entry of 954 mares, of which 333 nominations were void under tlie conditions of the race. Of the remaining 021, 309 declared at $10 each; eighty-three at $20 each: llftv-slx at $00 each, and twenty-four at $70 each, making an accumulation of $10.3.K) in declaration fees. This leaves eighty-nine colts and fillies still eligible at $100 each, so. with its $10,000 of added money, the Futurity of 1909 has a gross value of $29,21)0. Starters will have to pay $250 each, all of which goes to the second and third horses. Of tin; gross value, $1,250 of the added money and two-thirds of the starting fees go to the second horse and $750 of the added money and one-third of the starting fees to the third horse. The nominators of the winner, of the second horse and of the- third horse are to receive $2,000, $1,250 and $500 of the added money respectively. These sums and its own fees deducted, will give the winner of the race the net sum of $23,120. quite a tidy value in these days, but the lowest sum that ever went to a Futurity winner. The list of two-year-olds still eligible to start, their breeding and their owners, are the following: The following to pay $350 Each, or $100 Forfeit. The Slaryland Jockey Club only has authority over Its own affairs and races on dates allotted to it by the Jockey Club, which has its headquarters in New York and governs racing in the eastern states. C. 1). P., Chicago. If a horse is named in a parlay that is not in the race selected, a bookmaker should not change the name without the knowledge and consent of the bettor, thus leaving the responsibility for the mistake where it belongs. It follows that the parlay would be void as to that race. J. J. SIcK., Toronto. Ont. There are several ruling turf bodies in the United States. The Jockey Club rules in the eastern states, the Western Joekey Club and American Turf Association in the central west and south, and the Pacific Jockey Club in the states of the Pacific coast. Texas has a ruling body of its own and so has Kentucky. Walter Miller Rides at 117 Pounds WALTER MILLER RIDES AT 117 POUNDS. Walter Sillier, the American jockey, had his first mount in England on July 8, when he was unplaced in a race at Pontefrnct on a horse called Traitress, owned by G. W. Smith, who Is .Miller's regular employer. 'Sillier could not do less than 117 pounds. The turf writers said that the American shaped up well In the saddle. Motors Much Used at Yonkers MOTORS MUCH USED AT YONKERS. New York. July 22. The comparative inaccessibility of the Yonkers course makes the Empire City meeting a harvest for taxicabs and sightseeing automobile companies. Hundreds of racegoers make the journev In each direction by these means, more than fifty o'f the "free lance" vehicles being in commission during the racing hours on Important days. In addition nearly 150 private cars are parked in the old orchard back of the grandstand, which the racing club has turned into an open air garage. Leaving the track they are generally loaded to capacity, some of the owners carrying friends even on the running boards to save them the disagreeable journey to Yonkers on the subway. The roads to the Empire City course are in excellent condition but the nutdinobllists find themselves unable to do any speeding, as a short, run from the track carries them into the city, where numerous policemen on motorcycles see to it that the proprieties are observed. Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE TURF. Colonel Alex Labold of Cincinnati Is a recent arrival at Yonkers. Spooner has been suffering with a bad knee, but Is now much improved. Charles Churchill of Kentucky 'is n guest of Slatt J. Winn nt Empire City. R. F. Carman will ship his stable to Saratoga at the close of the Yonkers meeting. August Belmont's Field Slouse probably will next be seen under colors in the Alabama Stakes at Saratoga. Harrv Brolaski writes from the City of Slextco that the proposed race track at TIa Juana will be built. The two-vear-old filly Slay Florence is named for the wife of William L. Powers, of the Fasig-Tipton Company. Running- races at night having proved a failure, the management of the fair at Springfield. 111., have added two races for- thoroughbreds to the afternoon program. Among the exhibits at a siwrting show in England is a cork skull, cap worn, by an Australian steeple-chase jockey in a race, and which lie says saved his life when ho was thrown in a race and fell on his head. As H. J. Srorris. one of the stewards at Empire Citv, Is temporarily S. S. Howland's substitute as representative of August Belmont's racing interests, he does not net as steward -when any of Sir. Belmont's horses are running. Colonel Austin, the property of N. Crippen of Waco, and Knight of the East, belonging to W. II. Schwartz, were so badly burned In the fire at Tulsa race track that their usefulness for racing purposes has probably been destroyed. The monetary loss to the Tulsa Fair Association amounts to about $0,000. Shamrock, which set so fast an early pace in the second race at Yonkers Tuesday, was once a stable companion to Slay Florence, the winner. At the weeding out sale of II. P. Whitney's stable not long ago Shamrock was sold for $85 to II. W. Warner, her present owner. She Is a half-sister to Brother Jonathan and is by Irish Lad. Import, a horse that raced well in California in the colors of F. W. Healey, is beating everything in sight in western .Canada this summer in races over a considerable distance of ground. Preen, last season's champion sprinter in that locality, has had his colors lowered by Beaver Dam Lad. a bay colt by Eagle Plume Florida,, owned by N. E. Slc-Adie, of Golden, B. C. John Greener, the owner of Olambala. is a substantial citizen of Nashville, Tenn. Sir. Greener was at .one time the proprietor- of a big drug business in Nashville: also of the Duncan Hotel. He has long been Identified with horse racing, as breeder, promoter of racing enterprises and campaigner of race horses. He will be remembered as the man who took Oiseau east in 1904, and sold him to James B. Brady for $30,000. A visitor at Empire City track this week was Slaster John A. Slorris of Throggs Neck. This voting man Is a grandson of the late John A. Slorris, the builder of Slorris Park, and one of the famous racing men of the, country in the closing decades or the last century. He is a son of Alfred Henner Slorris. John .Morris Is just old enough to begin to take an active interest in the sport to which his grandfather devoted much time and money. Despite the great admiration expressed In some quarters over the method of carrying on racing details on English courses., there occurred recently at Salisbury an incident which caused much comment. Long after the horses which had run in a race were taken off the course the stewards decided to disqualify the -winner. The horse to which the race was awarded had been taken away from the course altogether. It was a selling race and he could not be offered for sale that day. John T. Ireland hails from Bourbon County, Kentucky.' He has be'eli a trainer and developer of horses for many years. He developed Hlndoocraft. long the holder of the American record for one mile and five-tiighths; -Newton, a Latonia Derby winner; and Douatello, winner' of a Derby at St. Paul when racing- flourished in Minnesota. Mr. Ireland Is a brother-in-law of Robert L. Thomas, and he it was who engineered the famous Thomas coup on Wexford at Gravesend three Seasons back, which netted its beneficiaries something like $40,000. Page 6 Strange Bets and Bettors: Titled Men and Thier Curies Wagers at White's Notorious Resort in London STRANGE BETS AND BETTORS. Titled Men and Their Curious Wagera at White's Notorious Resort in London. Undoubtedly the most notorious resort in the world is White's, of London, Eugland, for 200 years the headquarters of titled bettors and other gay followers of the game of chance. The betting book at White's is a most interesting volume, for it contains a record of all the wagers made there for nearly two centuries, and there Is a great variety, mainly the offspring of the singular whiins and caprices of several generations of members of the old club. In the second half of the eighteenth century the fyassion for making wagers reached ' its height. Men staked their money on anything that happened or suggested itself, no matter how trivial it might be. The duration of a man's life and the increase in well known families were never failing subjects for bets and they completely overshadowed those placed on sports and athletics. A history of the club has been published, and as a sort of a supplement the items of the betting book came out, and It proved to be the best part of the work. One of the best known members of White's was Lord Montford, a typically reckless gamester of the period. In hisxlay the gambling spirit at the club was at its zenith, and in the old book "there are no less than sixty of his wagers recorded, aggregating $2(1,000, and marriages, births and deaths were the events upon which nearly the whole of the sum depended. Evidently sporting matters did not appeal to his lordship. Under the date of November, 1754, a bet is recorded which is the most tragic in the whole book. It reads:. "Lord Monford wagers Sir John Bland 100 guineas that Mr. Nash outlives Mr. Cihber," the latter being the. noted actor and poet, and the. former the famous character. Beau Nash. The' bet was -never paid, for below it is the significant entry: "Both Lord Montford and Sir John Bland put an end to their own lives before the bet was decided." Lord Montford supplied the first of the tragedies by committing suicide on New Year's day. 1755. after having spent the last of his fortune. lie had squandered a vast amount of money extravagantly, but the worst blow came when two of his greatest friends Lord Gage and Lord Albemarle died on the same day. It" was the general opinion that they paid Lord Montford an annuity, but anyway lie became more reckless than ever, for he even went so far as to stake his life that the Duke of Newcastle would secure him a government appointment. He wanted to be" Master of the, Royal Hounds or else Governor of Virginia, and in both jobs he was disappointed. The blow was sore, and immediately Lord Montford aroused suspicion by inquiries as to the easiest method of self-destruction. He spent his last evening at White's and it was the last day of 1754; he ate supper and afterward played whist till the advent of the new year. Next morning Lord Montford sent for1 witnesses and a lawyer and had his will drawn up. He then asked the limb of the law if a man shot himself would his will hold good. On being informed that it would Lord Montford told the lawyer to wait a .while, and stepping into the next room, shot himself. Sir John Bland, the second party in the famous wager, shot himself in September of that same year ou the, road from Paris, to' Calais. According to the history of the club Lord' Lincoln made the following comment on the death of Lord Montford: "Well, I am very sorry for poor Lord Montford, but It is the part of every wise man to make the best of every misfortune. I shall now have the best cook in England." He was forestalled by the new Lord Montford, who retained the services of Joras, the chef in question. The very oldest bet in the book reads: "Oct. ye 5, 1743 Lord Lincoln bets Lord Winchilsea 100 guineas to 50 guineas that the Duchess Dowager of Marlboro does not survive the Duchess Dowager of Cleveland." The vitality of' the Duchess of Marlborough was then a common topic, and "Old Sarah," as she was familiarly called, was the subject of more bets than one among the members of White's. Two years before the date of the bet the old woman was very ill, and one day she lay for hours without speaking until she heard the dictum of the physician that she should be blistered or she would die. Instantly she woke up in the bed and shaking her bead in an emphatic manner said: "I won't be blistered and I won't die," and neither did she till toward the close of 1744. Coming down a little later there is a bet recorded under the date of May. 1815. and it has more or less of the sporting character. The entry says "Mr. Bou-verie bets Mr. Butler 200 guineas to 15 that lie does not name the winner of the Derby, the Oaks and the new Bishop." It was not ever known that the good gentleman knew he was classed with horses. That was the rear of the battle of Waterloo, and there is an entry that "Mr. Mills bets Mr. Raikes four ponies to one that hostilities commence between England and France on or before the 14tli of August. 18115," and this same bet Is followed by a wager of 200 guineas between Sir Joseph Copley and Mr. Haikes, the conditions being the same. Sir Joseph having previously wagered Mr. Raikes 100 guineas to 25 that war would break out on or before May 2!. The unsettled state of things at this particular time provoked lots of betting on the same line, as, for instauce, "Sir Berkeley Paget bets Lord Sefton 10 that Bonaparte is not at the head of the fuineas 'rench government on the d of August. 1S16." Waterloo definitely settled this bet. as well as a lot of others in the same line. , A great spendthrift and gambler of this period was Sir George Talbot. In April, 1810, he made his one hundred and fiftieth bet, his first wager being recorned at White's in 1809, and that was before he got the title. The bet which was his century and a half was: "Mr. Butler bets Sir George Tallwt 20 guineas that he is not in the room at White's, with Napoleon in the course of the next two years." , . . The footnotes to wagers are nearly always more or less laconic, but they are very often significant. One in particular tells the tale that the debts of the famous Beau Brummel are still unpaid, and under a 25 guinea wager of Colonel Cooke those who may. read are informed that the colonel "Is a bankrupt and pavs one shilling in the pound." The note to a bet of Lord Alvanley "that G. Talbot does not die a natural death N. B. Tinct, Canth, a drawn bet." looks very much like a medical prescription. . The straitened circumstances of a certain baronet also caused a lot of bets. Lord Alvanley made a bet of five guineas with Sir Joseph Copley "that a certain baronet understood between them is very much embarrassed in his circumstances in three years from the date thereof." By this it meant that Sir Joseph was to be a loser if the nobleman in question was seen to borrow small change from the waiters and other servants around the club. Perhaps the same unfortunate baronet was the subject of another bet recorded in the betting book, which says: "Mr. Me-tliuen bets Colonel Stanhope ten guineas to one that a certain worthy baronet understood between them does not of necessity part with his gold ice pails before tills day twelvemonth. The Ice nails, being fouud in a pawnbroker's will not entitle Colonel Stanhope to receive ten guineas." Another event that created a lot of wagering was that Lord Stewart would marry Lady Vane Tempest on or before a given date. One bet in particular had a sporting flavor, it being that "Mr. Broderick bets flftv guineas with General Mackenzie on bir John Shelley winning the Derby aeainst Lord Stewart being married to Lady Frances Vane Tempest in six months from this date." When King George IV, ascended the throne the movements of Queen Caroline began to attract attention and there was considerable speculation on the subject of her return. On January 29, 1820. a week after the old king's death. Mr. Raikes bet Horace Beckford that a certain person would be in England six months from the date. Several bets on the same event were made and the queen came back on January 0, 1S21. Horace Walpole, who was a member of the club, makes allusion to the bets in his letters. Hp says: "One of the youths at White's has committed a murder, and he intends to repeat it. He betted l.uOO that a man could not live twelve hours under water, hired a desperate fellow, sunk him in a ship by way of experiment, and both ship and man have not appeared since. Another ship and man are to be tried for their lives, instead of Blake, the assassin." This item gives a true Idea of the recklessly sporting character of the men who frequented White's. FOREMAN TEMPLE COURT BUILDING, SIXTH FLOOR, Nassau and Beekman Sts., New York City To the Racing Public: The arrangements for sending out tomorrow, Saturday, what I consider the surest betting proposition ever sent out. in my career are complete. ' The horse I have reference to and which I told you all about "both Wednesday and yesterday starts Tomorrow, Saturday. The stable the horse belongs to is not alone one of the most influential and successful in the country, but is also known for having one of the best and shrewdest trainers now in the east. The price I am paying for this, the most exclusive information I ever handled, is LARGER THAN I EVER PAID BEFORE. From what I saw, not only Sunday morning, but agaiu on Wednesday morning last, at Empire, as far as the work-out of the horse is concerned, convinces me that IT WILL PROVE THE BEST INVESTMENT EVER MADE. The price we will get can be no less than 10 to 1. and it is simply a question of whether we will get 10 to 1 or 25 to 1. The market I do not control. This horse is a phenomenal breaker at the barrier and leaves the post like a flash, which is one of the most essential things in racing. Most of all, I know of the fitness of this horse and I know the owners and trainer. I don't want you to have the slightest regard or opinion of your own when you get the same. I know what I am talking alioiit, and also know that if jou do not take advantage of this opportunity it means that you do not want any money. OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS BUT SELDOM at a man's door. I am giving you the chance to play a 10 or 25 to 1 shot tomorrow, Saturday, which, if real conditions were known, would not lie more than 8 to 5. This is a "genuine sleeper." The smallest detail has been attended to and no mistakes can be made, excepting by the "weather man," in which case the horse will not start. Loss appears impossible. This horse is THE BEST THING OF THE SEASON; In fact, it appears a chance to even up any losses that you niay have sustained. It will also prove to you the PROPER USE OF BLINKERS. Watch this race carefully as the charts report it on Sunday morning in the Racing Form. Nothing I have cverseen in racing appears a more practical certainty or a more foregone conclusion.
