Yonkers' closing day o racing was marked by the first defeat at the meeting of Barney Schreiber's great racer. .Tack Atkin. It was only after a particularly brilliant effort, considering the stiutendous weight of KK) pounds carried, that the great sprinter succumbed to August Bel-mont's lightly weighted lilly, Half Sovereign, in the Mount Vernon Handicap, at one mile, worth $1.!J5 net to the winner, and the chief feature of a splendid card. A quintet of fast horses were engaged, including, besides the pair mentioned. Arondack. Tony Bonei-o and I'raetical. Despite the severe handicap of weight, distance and cuppy going. .Tack Atkin ruled favorite against the held and had a numerous and loyal public following. The wonderful son of Sain El Salado was conceding from 15 to 39 pounds to his adversaries. The winner's weight concession from him was i!U pounds. Essentially a sprinter and striding over anything but firm footing the Missouri-bred racer's failure was nevertheless chiefly attributed to his jockey's premature pacemaking. The favorite exhibited his recently contracted habit of dwelling at the start, went somewhat wide on tlx? iirst turn and cut down Tony Bonero's flying lead too quickly. Although he impressively dominated the middle running Half Sovereign's close -and iersistent proximity at all stages prepared the favorite's adherents for ultimate defeat. Arondack. ibeaten only a length after having met with serious early interference, shared almost equally with Jack Atkin in the real glory of the struggle. The tabled history of the Mount Vernon Handicap, flrst run for in 1907, is as follows: Year. Winner. A. Wt. Jockey. Val. The specially arranged race, at live and a half furlongs, for the stars of the juvenile division, furnished a thrilling and spectacular contest. The field was composed of Collner, Donau. The Fad and th inconsequential I'lacide. It was meant to" Ik; a trl-cornered affair and a test of supremacy between the bet of the youngsters developed' at ""the Yonkers meeting, and so it turned out. "The trio of cracks furnished excitingly keen contention from first to last. The result remained in doubt until in the last few strides Colinet drew out and won going away from his pair of excessively used and exhausted pacemaking opponents. Donau was particularly unlucky in the matter of , suicidal pacemakiug forced on him by his jockey in the deep going on the inner rail. The largest crowd seen at the meeting came out this afternoon to enjoy the getaway program. The weather was propitious. The hot sun hail accomplished wonders in putting the track in shaio. but the effects of yesterday's rainstorm were still visible, and the cuppy going prevailed. Favorites were in eclipse in the lirst and last races. Queen Marguerite's convincing victory in the fifth was regarded as additional evidence that she had not been defeated on her merits by Earl's Court last Wednesday. It was the winner's fourth appearance under colors within the week. The Yonkers meeting has been remarkable for the success of western horses, owners and jockeys. The record of fifteen firsts achieved during the sixteen days of the meeting by II. G. BcdwoH's horses has not been equaled on a metropolitan track in the past decade. Taplin, the stable jockey, rode all of Bed-well's representatives, but was a dismal failure on outside mounts. His handling of Don Enrique and Madman this afternoon evoked much criticism, and the running of the latter was not taken too seriously. Jockey Bergen complained to the stewards that bis horse, St. Joseph, had lioen fouled by Itclleview. the winner of the last race. The Marrone horse's right stille was badly bruised from contact with the fence. Acting .Sheriff Scherp, who has been continuouslv on duty to enforce the law regarding betting, declares that lie is sure there was no violation of the law during the Yonkers meeting. As the session progressed money was wagered freely, if unostentatiously. ISets were made publicly and the layers displayed their odds conspicuously by holding their programs face outward as in the old days. The liest authorities agree that a conviction would be Impossible under the present system of betting. Twelve Haggin yearlings that recently returned to the United States from England have been turned over to Charles Littlclield for training. Would Lease Lexington Track: Cincinnati Concern Makes Kentucky Association Proposition for Fall Meeting WOULD LEASE LEXINGTON TRACK. Cincinnati Concern Makes Kentucky Association Proposition for Fall Meeting. Lexington, Ky., July 31. The Minyard-Kessler Company, of Cincinnati, a concern engaged in handling business investments and securities, has written to the Kentucky Racing Association, asking if it will bo possible to lease the Lexington track the coming fall for a race meeting of seven or ten days. They proposed to pay all purses and other expenses of the meeting and to give a cash guarantee that everything will be conducted along business lines, and asked for what sum per day the track could be leased under such conditions. Xo reference is made in the letter to the system of betting that the company expects to use in the even that they can lease the track. The letter will be presented to the directors of the Kentucky Association at their next meeting, but it is exceedingly doubtful if the proposition will be favorably received. A similar proposition was made by local people last fall, but the association declined to enter into an arrangement which would have yielded them a certain profit, and, instead, conducted a meeting at a loss. They take the stand that the Kentucky Association was formed for the promotion of the sport rat her than for financial gain, ami they much prefer to conduct the local track along lines that have been laid out, tending to improved racing conditions, than to entrust the management of a mooting to persons who mean primarily to make a dollar-gathering enterprise. In order to embrace another Saturday in the thirty days of racing authorized by law. there will be no racing on Monday. This will permit the legal extension of the meeting for one day longer than the dates originally announced. Running of the Flash Stakes 1 ' : RUNNING OF THE FLASH STAKES Few American stake races are of longer establishment than the Flash Stakes, it having lirst been run so far back as in 1809, when it fell to Francis .Morris' famous filly. Remorseless. The Flash has not been run continuously, having been dropped from the Saratoga program under the Walbaum regime. When It was 'revived in 1901 it was at a value greater than any In its previous history. It was a dash of a half mile down to 1S97 and it was' this that enabled the extremely speedy Leamington filly, Olitipa. to set a half-mile record as far back as 1S74 that stands as the track record at the distance to this day and probably will for a long time to come. The Flash is a race that revives recollections of many of the most ruinous racers of our turf history from such long-gone celebrities of old days as Remorseless and Tom Rowling down to such recent stars as Hamburg, Sysonby, Burgomaster and Peter Pan. Candidates for Opening Day's Handicap Feature Work Gossip from the Spa. Saratoga, N. Y.. July 31. With the exception of the .Saratoga Handicap. the card for the opening day of the summer meeting of the Saratoga Association is strong and well balanced. That there will he added starters when the field for the handicap is posted is believed to be a certainty. It is doubtful if either of the Beverwyck pair. Berkeley and Sir John Johnson, answers the 'bugle. Sir John Johnson -has become sour. He stubbornlj- refused to work this morning. Despite his impost. Olambala will be the favorite. His race against Filz Herbert in the Lawrence Realization and his impressive, although not particularly fast work here causes him to be strongly fancied. His final exercise was a mile in 1:44 on the "Whitney" track this morning. Bouquet. Petticoat, Maltbie and Allliction were sent the handicap route on the main track. Bouquet did the mile and a quarter in 2:0SJ, the first mile being covered in 1:41s. anil finished stoutly. Petticoat's performance was the best of the quartet. The fractional time of it was: 25. 50, 1:15. 1:41. 1:54, 2:07;. She was tiring at the end. but she had up more than the 8t! pounds she will have to carry Monday. Allliction, ridden by James dtowe's stout exercise boy. -Marshall, did a mile in 1:42 and the full distance in 2:09. A feature of the morning work was a spin by. Sweep. He is ready for the Special, and the two-year-old that ilieats him from now on will have to bo of rare quality. His time was 12. 23J. 47-. l:00i and lrlSS. He pulled up at the seven-eighths mark in 1:2S;. Grasniere. by some claimed to be speedier than Sweep, was cantered three-quarters in 1:10. He Is a high-strung animal and liable to be left at the .post. . Woodford Clay's Ocean Bound did a half in :49 and was not fully extended. She favored her right fore foot slightly as she walked back to where her owner and trainer stood. Her improved condition caused trainer French Brooks to exultingly remark: "She doesn't act much like a broken-down filly, does she? Her feet are tender, that's all." John Sanford, in speaking of the Hurricana-hred horses, which will race here, said: "Our horses were not well when they arrived, but are all right now. Wejiavc a stable similar to what we had last year, and with average luck will win about as many races as we did then. We Jiave no world beaters, luit believe some of our young "" horses are good oni'S." John Sanford seemingly has a smart juvenile in Agnier. a brown filly by Clifford Muiest. This youngster, which will face the barrier for the lirst time during the approaching meeting here, worked three-eighths of a mile Friday morning In 352, and was pulling up at the half in 49. Bouquet, which was sick in Canada, has fully recuperated. A few days ago she galloped a mile over the "WHiitney course" In 1:43. If she can stay a mile and a quarter, with 105 up. she is likely to be a factor in the handicap Monday. Maltbie, 117, has done a mile in 1:43. Charles Hughes' Barleythorpe, a line-looking two-year-old. did three-quarters in 1:15. the lirst half in 47. Sweep, now in perfect condition, did three-iiuarters Thursday in the "Whitney" going in 1:1S. Ills stable companion. Grasniere. worked a like distance on the main track in 1:15. Turf Situation on the Coast TURF SITUATION ON THE COAST. San Francisco, Cal., July 31. It is intimated that an ollicial announcement relative to racing in California next winter may lie expected within a month or so. T. II. Williams, the controlling spirit in turf affairs on the coast, is. quoted as saying that no definite arrangements have as yet been made. East, West and Empire City: How it Comes That Big Metropolitan Stables Are Not Racing at Yonkers Meeting EAST, WEST .AND EMPIRE CITY. How It Comes That Big Metropolitan Stables Are Not Racing- at Yonkers Meeting. The fact that James R. Keene, S. C. Hildretli and some other prominent eastern turfmen did not race any of their horses at Empire City has come in for criticism and a suggestion that they were averse to , contributing to the success of racing over that track. Both Keene and Hildretli helped Empire City with liberal nominations to its stakes, and that both decided ; to send their horses to Saratoga for a rest during . the time consumed by the Empire City meeting . is a coincidence that has its solution in the Importance . of the Saratoga stakes and the rivalry of the two stables for the leadership in eastern racing. Both owners knew very well that horses in abundance were ready for racing at Empire City, and. In view of that fact, felt at liberty to cater to what they deemed their own best interest. Had there : been a necessity for the presence of their horses at Empire City, it may be safely assumed that they : would have been active participants in the racing . over the Yonkers track. Both arc capable of making sacrifices for the good of racing. It has also been suggested that western owners and horses were too predominant at Empire City. That western horses contributed greatly to the success of the meeting is a fact and that they were there in unusual numbers for an eastern meeting is also a fact. One does not have to seek far for the reason. A popular western ollicial. Matt J. Winn, had charge of the Empire City racing, and it was largely due to the favor with which he was regarded by western owners that New Yorkers enjoyed the splendid displays of speed given by Prince Ahmed. Rose Queen. Richard Reed, Cherryola. Donau. Jack Atkin, Apache, The Fad, Hans, Stanley Fay and other western cracks. There is no doubt that James- Butler's advent in eastern racing was at the outset unfavorably regarded by the big men of the eastern turf, but that is a condition long past, and his track and its meeting now stand higher in general esteem than Brighton Beach and its meetings ever did. Mr. Butler is progressive and manifests a liberal disposition to put Empire City racing on a plane with that of the other metropolitan tracks. Empire City is a firmly established seat of racing and it is a good thing that it is sulliciently ixipular with western owners to induce them to send their best horses there to race. Some narrow-minded writers may make ill-natured comments on that feature, but there is not lacking evidence that it is pleasing to the patrons of the track. I Record-Breaking Crowd: Summer Meeting at Windsor Opens Under Auspicious Circumstances , ; . . . : : . RECORD - BREAKING CROWD SUMMER MEETING AT WINDSOR OPENS UNDER AUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES. Green Seal Carries Colors of St. James Stable to Victory in Frontier Handicap, Stake -Feature of Excellent Card. - Detroit. Mich., July 31. Under auspices more favorable than ever before; the Windsor Racing Association began this afternoon its summer -meeting. Never in the history of the track was the attendance larger. The crowd taxed the recently enlarged plant to its utmost capacity. The newly built clubhouse was a favorite spot for the society folk who viewed the racing. Among many prominent persons present were Hon. R. E. Sutherland, M. P.. Speaker of the House of Commons; Hon. A. II. Clark. M. P.; Magistrate and Mrs. Leggett; Attorney-General Rodd and Mrs. Rodd, George Hendrie, Strathern Hendrie. F, II. Walker. Edward Corrigan. W. B. Haldeman, of Louisville, and M. Gerrans of Buffalo, N. Y. Green Seal, owned by the St. James Stable, was successful in the Frontier Handicap, the stake offering of a good card. The handicap carried a net value of .$1,535 to the winner and attracted seven of the best racers in training hereabouts. Hanbridge. although conceding weight to his opponents, was cousidered best and enjoyed the honor of favoritism. He encouraged his backer by following Green Seal closely for three-quarters and made a determined ldd for the lead just before reaching the stretch. Green Seal, however, after a slight shaking up, drew out ugain and passed the finish with nearly two lengths to spare. Old Honesty, after overcoming much interference, stood a hard stretch drive courageously and 'held the others safe for third. The start of the race was ragged, Tourenne. one of the supposedly dangerous contenders, being practically left at the post. He closed a big gap and finished fourth'. Gretna Green ran ioorly and All Red was not good enough at the weights. The tabled history of the Frontier Handicap is as follows: Year. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. The racing throughout the afternoon was spirited and speculation was brisk, thirty-two layers working at top seed to accommodate the bettors. The defeat of Star Wave, and Eye White by Banlves in the second race was a stunner and proved the principal upset of the afternoon. Because of his previous good showing. Eye White- was thought to hold his opponents safe, but he evidently lias not recovered from ltis last, race. He weakened palpably after following the speedy C. II. Patten closely the first part and allowed Star Wave to move away from him in the stretch. Star Wave was overhauled by the fast-coming Banives in the last few strides. The inaugural scramble introduced some of the best sprinters" quartered here. They furnished a rousing contest throughout. Hyperion II. drew clear in the final furlong tft gain the victory from- March-monet. with Dr. Waldo Briggs third. Ada Meade was strongly supported in the race, but her chances went glimmering when Hufnagel pulled her out of contention in the first half-mile. Giles and Reidmoore- fought it out in the third, and the former took the purse after leading for the entire trip. Uncle Toby, after many failures, was finally pitted against a band that he clearly outclassed and -won with ease, Minot being his closest attendant throughout. The nncertain Tom Dolan failed the favorite backers in the sixth race, retiring after running forwardly for half a mile. Dennis Stafford beat Grande Dame for the purse in a big romp. Ragman, in the closing race, had to be shaken up to down Mrs. Sewall, an outsider, but managed to draw away in the last quarter and won comfortably. Valley Stream, which was posted to start in the opening race, was withdrawn on account of injuries sustained while being led to the track from the outside. The horse was frightened by a street car. got tangled in a barbed wire fence, was badly cue about the legs and probably will not be able to again race in consequence of the mishap. John Hogan, who will do the starting at the Joliet. 111., mixed meeting, speaks hopefully of the prospects for that venture and for the probable resunip-; tion of thoroughbred racing in the state of Illinois Tom Dolan pulled up decidedly lame after th-; finish of the sixth race, and this campaigner will probably le donated shortly to the Canadian Breed-; iug Bureau as a gift from J. The greatest system in the world; can be operated at track, poolroom or Handbook, on a capital as small as $20. Race Players, I wish to say a few words in regard to tills system. First, it is entirely different in every way from any other system that has ever been discovered. It is strictly a flat bet system. Your bet is the same on each race, never more nor less.. It never plays more than one horse in a race. It deals in no way with handicapping or newspaper selections. Its makes its selections from the entries and past performances. If- you desire, all your bets can be placed on the morning of the day of race or even night previous, if you are able to get the entries. NOTE BELOW the record this system has shown oicrated with $40 capital; also the guarantee 1 give to each purchaser. MY GUARANTEE I guarantee every purchaser of the Hayes Flat Bet System to refund the price paid for said system if it is found that the record as stated below "was not realized with a capital of $43. or that the capital exceeded $40. C. Hayes. This guarantee, xigned as It appears hero, stands good to every purchaser. In connection wltli this I also mail this same guarantee to purchaser with system with my name signed in my own handwriting, and the record exactly as appears below, stating the same amount of capital, written underneath the guarantee. The record of the Hayes Flat Bet System is stated below and covers a period of thirteen weeks, and was realized positively aud absolutely on a capital of $40. WEEK ENDING JULY 27 LOST $ 20.00 WEEK ENDING JULY 20 WON 12.00 WEEK ENDING JULY 13 LOST 40.00 WEEK ENDING JULY 6 WON 100.00 WEEK ENDING JUNE 29 WON 254.00 WEEK ENDING JUNE 22 WON 114.00 WEEK ENDING JUNE 15 LOST 30.00 WEEK ENDING JUNE 8 WON 10.00 WEEK ENDING JUNE 1 WON 10.00 WEEK ENDING MAY 25 LOST 20.00 WEEK ENDING MAY 18 LOST 20.00 WEEK ENDING MAY 11 WON 80.00 WEEK ENDING MAY .4 WON 14.00 You will note that the total losses for the whole season were only $130. To you who are skeptical, I would ask. did you ever know of another agent of a system who would print the record of same each week as I do, give the guarantee with signature attached and state the amount of capital used, as 1 do? Candidly writing, I have this to say of the Hayes Flat Bet System: No system or method of speculation has ever before been discovered that could be operated on the small capital of this system and show the results it shows. Anyone can take this system and with only a small capital realize a snug income. Do you know of any method of speculation where you could take $40 and realize what the Hayes Flat Bet System has on that amount'; Dear Reader Do you think I would print the above record and give the guarantee as appears above with my signature attached if it were not true?. Why be skeptical when you know if it is not true the guarantee compels mo to refund your money? The Hayes Flat Bet System will be mailed to any address upon receipt of price, $10. C.
