Change In Bodily Appearance And Growth In The Way That Signifies Good Health And General Improvement Exile PRINCE PALS DERBY CREDENTIALS SHOWING A DECIDED CHANGE IN BODILY APPEARANC1 AND GROWTH IN THE WAY THAT SIGNIFIES GOOD HEALTH AND GENERAL IMPROVEMENT Nothing in the world so lit a horse for racing as does racing itself Ceorge Smiths heroic effort against his elder Itayberry Candle here in Lexington in 1M1C was undoubtedly contributory to his Derby success Omar Khayyam though he went down to defeat by Ticket after a gallant effort In Lexingtons Derby Trial of 1917 derived much hemtit therefrom and was easily able to defeat his erstwhile conqueror in the running of the Kentucky Derby Of course Sir Parton Kegret and Kxteriuinator on the day of their Derby successes were first outers for the season Fvcn so all horsemen are agreed that actual par ¬ ticipation in racing is conducive to improvement It is therefore gratifying to know that it s the present intention to give Donnacona and Perhaps On Watch a race in public prior to their being sent to the post for the Kentucky Derby DerbyWhen When at Churchill Downs last week Mr IIir ch introduced need me to a racinglike chestnut daughter of Friar Hock and Miss Kearney by Planndes A really charming ming lilly long and low and just another hav ¬ ing the look characteristic of the progeny of Friar Kock whose dam Fairy Cold is a most remarkable mare in more ways than one and particularly so in the iatter of color control a subject 1 am fain to confess an inability to fathom The chestnut Fairy Cold foaled aled tin chestnut Fair Play to the brown horse Hastings and the chestnut Friar Kock by the seal brown Kock Sand ami here is the chestnut Friar Kock coming out as the sire of a chestnut lilly dam the bay mare Miss Kearney a daughter of the bay Plumules Moreover this chestnut lilly exhibits right bang up in her pedigree no less than live crossos through Calliard Koquebrnne Planndes Sandringham and Masctto of the pure dominant for bay or brown St SimonCalopin strain of blood As before noted so far as my observation goes Hermit is one of the greatest color controllers the stud ever knew and of this chestnut Hermit strain Miss Kearnevs daughter shows two infusions by way of Kock Sands granddam St Marguerite and tiie Oaks winner Lonely dam of Planudes Verily tin color scheme is past my understanding However if there is one thing more than another which bespeaks breeding being right of course for a horses success as a sire it is the ability to control color The chestnut Stockwell sired the chestnuts Doneaster Ulair Athol and St Albans all of which have set up lines of their own whereas Stockwells bays such as Lord Lyon The Marquis The Duke and 1ncas have failed in this particular Calopin and his son St Simon were pure dominants for bay and brown Persimmon however was not and his chestnut son Xinfandcl failed WgirhllySs tf JW tf beS oT W Vft Stflei Vc1i Avre Avrebays bays but HendOrs line is best perpetuated by the chestnut Pona Vista through Cyllene and Polyinelns All this however by the way for it has but little bearing on the condition of the prospective Kentucky Derby candidates another of which Prince Pal also is now quartered at Churchill Downs DownsA A vastly improved colt in appearance is Prince Pal As a twoyearold the son if Prince Palatine presented a rather heavy bulky appearance the crested neck of a Sundridge full quartered and rough muscled During the winter recess however the bay has lined down amazingly though of course he still shows Sundridge in head and neck but his quarters back and loin now present a far more linished ap ¬ pearance and my hope is that Prince Pal has improved as much in action and gameness as he has in looks The linal effort last year of Prince Pal when racing against the lilly Dresden was to me dis ¬ tinctly disappointing Certainly the Callaher lilly was in receipt of much poundage some sixteen pounds I think lint Prince Pal when tackled for he had taken the lead did not appear to respond in the style of a real race horse Prince Pal too carried his head a trilk high last year and sprawled a bit when challenged but all this may have of course been due to immaturity and for him time should do much Anyway the two usually go hand in hand and I fin one anticipate vastly improved form this year for the son of Prince Palatine PalatineAs As to Prince Pals breeding a son of Prince Palatine so far so good sons and daughters of my champion are certainly bred to improve what about the breeding of Prince Pals dam Wilful Maid II daughter of Sundridge a horse of Matterhorn proportions heavy of crest full quartered and possessed of tremendous sliced which in great part lie transmits to his offspring Sundridge is the sin of at least one good horse in Snnstar which won the Derby on three legs and a swinger and was a son of mark you the Herod mare Doris by Loved One OnePrince Prince Pal is a member of the 1a Fleche Sain Polynieliis Musket Krown Itess branch of the Xo family which family I lirmly believe as does tin Maid of Masham branch owe much of its excellence to the introduction of the blood of Matchcm through Melbourne Culver dam of La Fleche and Memoir had for a dam tin unnamed daughter of Voting Melbourne Muskets dam also unnamed was by Melbournes son West Australian Sains dam The Ttsk is a daughter of Itarcahline These are facts no hypotheses and the conclusion tin Matchem leaven is conducive to the production of the best of our horses horsesIs Is Prince Pals breeding suggestive of Derby honors and future success as n sire For my part I should prefer to see his pedigree strengthened by iIosoup cross of Herod for in this blood he is dis tinclly deficient and it is more on this account tli anylhing else that I presume to donblit Prince Pals success next Derby day and if after success is come for him as a sire if will be through the in slrninentalitv of mares of Herod descent Sunday to discuss improvements at the Havre de Grace racing plant with general manager Edward Kurke Just before he started for Houston Tex Mr Simtus re ¬ marked that before he was finished with Havre de Grace it would be one of tin most attractive racing places in the entire country He was however more interested in what Prince Pal the Prince Palatine colt for which he and his friend Henry Oliver of Pittsburgh paid a big price the other day to the estate of the late Jere Wheel ¬ wright was going to do in the Kentucky Derby Mr Simms is of the opinion that Prince Pal will make n good showing at Churchill Downs May S If William Wallace is fortunate enough to get him to the post lit to race one mile and a quarter Hut neither Simms nor his partner will be utterly cast down if Prince Pal does not make an especially good showing in the Derby because they realize that the task to which they have put Wallace is dill cult Prince Pal wintered in Kentucky SOUK of the other Derby candidates have it on him as re gards condition Siniins and Oliver will lie satisfied if Irince Pill wins one or two good races as a three yearold or a threeyearold and over because when he shall have done that he will have qualified for service at Nalapa Stud It was us much be ¬ cause Prince Pal seemed a highclass stud prospect as he did a Derby lioie that Mr Simms and Mr Oliver bought him himThe The dam of Prince Pal Wilful Maid II has been bred this year to Theo Cook the son of Ken Krush and Climax Mr Simms is just now exploiting at Nalapa Stud He has not had either The Wanderer or Eternal mated with anything These fouryear olds are to be trained again this year They will be taken un some time in the summer Theo Cook has however served only a few of the Xalapa marcs In mating twentyeight or thirty others M Simms has pursued the scientilic Kuropean practice of seeking what apncared to be proper nicks for his matrons He has mated them with Kock View Hornless Fair Play Flittergold Great Kritain horse He wants a stallion of the line of Great Britain The Commoner and Hanover to carry on the line of Hanover and reestablish in America the ascendency of Herod This line has dwindled as regards its male ascendency It seems to be up to Great Britain to restore it And since such a colt as Hasten On was one of Great Britains first two yearolds to race it seems Miobable that the long ¬ distance
