Ettahe a Repeater. PERFECT RACING WEATHER Bowies Sport Held Under Ideal Climatic and Track Conditions Star Realm Victorious in Best Race of Day Consistent Ettahe a Repeater HOWIE Mil April Perfect racing weather prevailed it Howie today uiil the sport provided a number of interesting contests The track was lpttcr than it has l oen the past few days and faster time was made in the majority of races The con ¬ sistent Ettaho added another race to liis credit when he disposed of a good band of platers in the fourth race coming from behind in a manner that showed him to he easily Iiest IiestWhat What wa perhaps the best race of the day was the fiftli at one mile which brought out useful racers Opinion was well divided as to what horse was best among tin starters it belli an unusually well balanced field The ultimate winner turned up in Thos Itrcnnans star Realm a horse that has been quite a disappointment for the past two years lie ran kindly today however being on the inside and Moso racing alongside kept this racer from bearing out until the stretch turn where he went wide losing much ground His jockev how ¬ ever continued to ride him hard and he drew away again to win by a safe margin Frank Monrort was second and Mountain Hose II was third Moscs chances were undoubtedly ruined when Star Itealm carried him out at the stretch turn ueeu Woiidefroni a P miu4mgjnning ranm exodleut nice making up iniicli ground throughout throughoutThe The victory of Star Itealm while somewhat of a surprise to many racegoers was a source of much gratification to his owner Thomas Kreiiiian who purchased the horse during the Kmpire City summer meeting of Last autumn Star Kealm showed that he was what horsemen term moon eyed and lie would run out in most of his races His trainer Frank Dayton had tried many different ways to iireveut him from bearing out but he would always do so in his races lie was probably meant for a highclass horse being well bred and a good looking individual individualHuzzas Huzzas away to a flying start in the first raee maintained his advantage all the way lint had to be hard ridden at the end True as Steel had no mishaps and held second place safe from Earnest which lasted long enough to beat Kirah for third money which made up considerable ground from a slow beginning beginningVerity Verity was saved in the second race to the last turn then rushed to the front when called on and scored an easy victory Courtdies ran well came from far buck and took second place in the last few strides Deckhand ran well and lasted long enough to withstand the final rush of Margery which was off none too well Ina Kay set the pace briefly and fell to the rear rearMARMITE MARMITE FIRST IN CLOSE FINISH FINISHMarmite Marmite had the best of the others that started in the third race opened up a gap but just lasted long enough to nose out Hope which was slow to begin and closed in cyclonic fashion Tiger Rose had sjieed but tired however although easily hold ¬ ing third money safe safeKttalie Kttalie won the fourth race after a hard drive with Ragnarok but the victory was a costly one for owner Kennedy as several horsemen bid the fovetie gelding up to JjirrOO the horse being re ¬ tained with the customary additional bid Kag uarok had no difficulty in securing second honors Mumho Inmbo ran his usual honest race but weakened in the final eighth to finish third Ponllncy ran an improved race raceHogart Hogart with an improved rider up won the sixth race from Austral and Paul Connelly The winner was underrated by Rodriguez and moved up rapidly when called on Austral came from far back u the last quarter Paul Connelly quit badly after showing good early speed and just lasted to get third place from Little Kd KdThe The rule passed by The Jockey Clnb yesterday regarding the change iu the selling race clause re ¬ lating to anyone but the owner claiming a horsi did not become effective here today as todays entries were made before the new rule was passed It will become operative with tomorrows pro ¬ gram gramThe The recent ruling by The Jockey Club refusing the further entries of any horses owned by 1 Stnrgis affects only one horse DERBY HORSES WORK FAST Sterling Surprises Onlookers by Good Gallop of Mile in 144 Donnacona Makes Best Showing Showingof of All the Candidates Damask DamaskTaking Taking Things Easily loriSVILIE Ky April St Todays workouts of Kentucky Derby candidates at Churchill Downs were by far the best of the spring season to date Donnacona On AVatch Prince Pal Sterling and Damask being called on to show their mettle in gallops of one mile each The time made by these horses with the exception of Damask was faster than even their trainers expected The Downs track was in better condition than in a long while although a hit flippy and every move of the lending horses in this section was a good one AYeather conditions could not have been improved upon uponDiiunacoiia Diiunacoiia and On AVatch ran the mile together in 11 Sterling in 144 Damask in 148 and Prince Pal in 144 144Sterlings Sterlings fast gallop was the surprise of the day He now takes rank with the members of the first division of the Derby prospects He was ridden by jockey G Pyrno who weighs almost 130 pounds His performance under this impost caused much favorable comment He began in front of the grandstand accompanied by Splendor a Kentucky Oaks candidate and the pair ran the first quarter in 23 seconds The half mile was covered in 30 and the threequarters in 1115 Splendor fell far back at this juncture and Sterling ran the rest of the distance alone After finishing the mile Byrne eased the colt up and he only can ¬ tered and finished the mile and an eighth in 139 To many it appeared as though Sterling was doing his best all the way but Pyrne said that he was not and he affirmed that he could have had more speed out of him had he cared to Ile wants a horse to rim with him that will look him in the eye and make him exert himself said Byrne and after his pacemaker drops back he seems to realize it itPRINCE PRINCE PAL SHOWS SPEED SPEEDPrince Prince Pal again worked by himself and for a change had jockey John Callahau on him This rider weighs only 100 pounds The Prince Palatine colt got down to business right off the reel as he ran the first quarter of a mile in 2 and he reached the half mill post in 111 seconds Tin time for fiveeighths was 1 and he made the threequarters in 117 He ran witli an even evenstride stride for seveneighths His ti was IMOr IMOrAt At the end of the mile Callahan took him up to practically a canter and he was timed for a mile and an eighth in 200r 200rThe The high early speed shown by Prince Pal gained him many new admirers AVhen he pulled up he seemed as fresh as when he started and cooled out in fine style styleConsiderable Considerable excitement was caused while Donna ¬ cona and On Watch were preparing for their workout as the former all but got away from jockey Cliff Robinson He took a notion to run the reverse way of the trck and darted out so uddenlv that Robinson was taken by surprise and ould not hold him The rider guided him to the mtside rail and managed to pull him up after a inssle which lasted for a quarter of a mile With On Watch he began in front of the stand and for the first time this season the G AV Loft Derby horses were allowed to move along at a rapid gait They ran the first quarter in 21 half mile in ilr fiveeighths in 104 threequarters in IMS eveneighths in 1 anil the mile in 11 Several horsemen timed them i shade faster They galloped out a mile and eighth ill 1 Donnacona led his stablemate throughout and made the most favorable impression as he was under restraint even while moving as fast as he did Jockey Newton Barrett shook his whip at On AVatch several times during the workout in order to keep him clo to Donnacona and this took some of the Inclination to loaf out of him He requires hard riding in his Avork and will not take it seriously even witli a pacemaker pacemakerFASTER FASTER THAN TRAINER WANTED WANTEDTrainer Trainer Max Hirsch said that the two colts an really faster than he wanted them to and he Some seem to think Bcdwell is fitting her for the Derby But of all the horses I have seen Damask is the one that will take some beating He can do almost anything asked of him and it will not IK Gift to the Cuban Breeders. THOROUGHBRED FOUNDATION IN CUBA Owner Bowman Gives Service of Top Hat a Free Gift to the Cuban Breeders HAVANA Cuba April 0 Horse breeding in Cuba will be stimulated greately through the generosity of Mr John McE Bowman noted hotel man whose activities in connection witli the Blltmoru and other hostelries in the Inited States made his name well known here in Cuba long before lie purchased the Hotel Savllla and gave the tourist and local popula ¬ tion a home in keeping witli tin tastes of the pres ¬ ent day Mr Bowmans iid to the breeding in ¬ dustry comes in the gift of the services of the thoroughbred sire Top Hat a halfbrother to Tra ¬ cery recently sold by Mr August llclmont of New York to the Argentina sportsman S J Luzue for 2 3oo On his first visit to this is 1 Mr Bowman Bowmanwas was struck witli the appearance and quality of tin native or Criolhi horses which showed Andalitsian ancestry in Ihcir fine head and neck these having the characteristics of the Barb or Arabian in tin most uniform degree The tapering wellplaced ears luminous eyes delicate muzzle and fine face all bespoke qualities which generations of close inbreeding had failed to eradicate Nearly all were deficient back of the saddle however and Mr Bowman who is an acknowledged authority on the saddle type having been asked to serve as a judge at the coming International Horse Show In London determined to offer a thoroughbred sire to the re ¬ public in or er that a permanent foundation might be laid for the improvement of the horse breeding industry IU found that those in authority were eager to follow his suggestions and Ji s choice of a stallion fell on Top Hat a superb son of Hastings and the renowned English mare Topiary by Urine which be secured from Major Belmont chairman of The Jockey Club who had bred him at the Nursery Stud in Kentucky Mr Bowman was at ¬ tracted by the bone and substance of Top Hat quite as much as by his breeding and the fact that two of his halfbrothers had already achieved dis tinctiim on the race course and in the stud was an additional incentive incentiveTopiary Topiary cost Mr liclmont 1SCOO as a fouryear old and he was moved to purchase her because of the exquisite lines of blood in her pedigree She was by Orme a splendid son of Ormonde known as the horse of the century while her dam was tin famous French mare Ilaisanterie which had immortalized herself by winning the Cambridgeshire as a three year old witli 125 pounds up After producing foals to Bnshey Park and Melton Topiary was brought to Kentucky and threw in quick suc ¬ cession Trap Rock Tracery and Top Hat HatThetwo Thetwo former were by the Epscin Derby winner Rock Sand which cost Major August Belmont J123 000 while Top Hat was by Hastings sire of Fair Ilay which in turn has given the turf the reign ¬ ing sensation of IJlii Man o AVar AVarTRAP TRAP ROCK SUCCESSFUL SIRE SIRETrap Trap Rock performed well on the turf and then proved a successful sire among his children iRing Lucullite He is in the stud in Virginia and is regarded so highly by Messrs Ross and Walker that they recently refused to put a price on him Tracery was sent to Kngland a a yearling In the fiopo Kiat he would repeat the successes of his dis ¬ tinguished sire but while he failed to win the Derby he was generally conceded to be a hotter horse than Rock Sand and heat every good horse of his day winning the Dimcaster St Leger and other great races He was far in front in the field which included Prince Palatine in the race for the Ascot Gold Cup in 1SI1S when a fanatic opi opioscd oscd to racing leaped upon the course and seiz ¬ ing the horses bridle reins dung to them until he brought horse and rider to the turf turfIt It was Major Btlmi nts intention to bring Tracery home to take the place of his sire which had been sold to a syndicate of French and American spurts men for 130000 but the breeders of England were so eager fur his services that he was placed in the stud where his earnings have averaged 350l0l per year Several offers including one from Lady lane Douglass of 210000 wore refused for the horse but when Senor S 1 Inzue of the Argentine Jockey Club recently tendered mo of 3 000 guineas or 253000 in our currency at normal exchange it was accepted One of Tracerys sons The Panther winner of the Two Thousand Guineas had been already acquired by the Ojo de Agua Stud in the Argentine for nearly 100000 100000It It will be seen that the breeders of Cuba are fortunate in securing the services of Top Hat whose offspring are most promising Mr Bowman who purposes spending many mouths of each year in Cuba in his conference with General Eiigenio San dies Agramuntc Secretary of Agriculture Labor aad Commerce offered the services of the horse to the breeders of the republic for a period of five years stipulating that only approved mares be accepted and that the horse should be stood where he would be available to fanciers throughout the republic There will lie no charge for his services Already s me of the best thoroughbred mares on the island have been accepted by the governments agent The horse arrived recently in Havana and for the present season will be quartered at Juinta los Mulinos the beautiful botanical garden at the head of Carlos Tercero TerceroPresident President Meiiocal has personally approved of Top Hat as the proper type of sire to improve the Cuban horse and has through General Agrainonte expressed his gratitude and that of the breeders of of the island to Mr Bowman for his generosity and thought fulness Australian Rat A Real Fisherman AUSTRALIAN RAT A REAL FISHERMAN Once while duck shooting on one of the many lagoons which are common in the Nelson province of New Zealand I saw a demonstration of the fact that some rats are real fishers One in particular was an accomplished angler his method although primitive was very ingenious 1 was concealed behind a log which jutted into the lagoon waiting my chance to get a shot at some ducks which were feeding in seme rather thick clumps of reeds about forty yards distant when my attention was drawn to the peculiar gymnastics of a black bush rat which was sitting on the extreme end of the log After seeing him throw a sprat upon tin log using his tail as a rod it suddenly dawned upon me that here was an angler making splendid use of the tackle at his command I had a close view of the grand little fisherman and his methods were truly ingenious lie would sit on the end of the log with nearly the whole length of his tail in the water his first case was unsuccessful he having thrown his fish clean over the log I then saw him place the end of his tail into his mouth which apparently he bit for immediately blood appeared It was palpable this was our fishermans bait and I can truthfully add he was using it to some purpose too for he had grassed or logged three fish inside of half a minute After landing his fish he would twist quickly around anil the silver midget was instantly devoured A slight movement of mine frightened the little fellow which scampered quickly off the log taking his natural tackle with him Jolly Tail in llobart Tas Mercury Big English
