Donnacona will have an excellent cuaiice to be returned tlie winner of the Derby DerbyThe The Downs track was in good condition but stil a trifle cuppy in spots when the I Iift ift pair galloped However the horses ran like it was fast and Donnacona was under restraint throughout Oi Watch as ii unl had to be shaken up several time because of his proclivity to loaf loafFor For a change trainer Max Ilirsch used a pace ¬ maker for his two Derby aspirants Sweet Mini being pressed into service for this task Doniiacoiin and On Watch did not start until after Sweet Mini Had gotten under way so as lo give him an oppor ¬ tunity to keep in front of them for a mile When they began at the quartermile post Donnacoiin opened up a short lead on his stable mate and jockey Cliff Robinson was kept busy trying to hold holdThey They ran the first half mile ini3 the three quarters in 120 the mile in 147 and the inili and oneeighth in 200 At the end of the mile Sweet Mint was eased up and the other two went on together for the final quarter Donna ¬ cona gained in favor by his smooth gait and the easy mnnner in which he went about his task Tin ir time for every eighth was almost identical and both horses pulled up looking as fresh as when they started startedSoon Soon after tlie Ix ft Derby pair came off the track trainer Ilirsch had them in the sandpit just outside of his stable and they both rolled about for several minutes This is their favorite pleasure anil they furnish as much delight to the spectators by their antics in the sand as they get out of it themselves themselvesAmong Among
