Racing Association for the Improvement of the Breed of Horses was a visitor in this city yesterday Mr Clare who occu ¬ pied a similar position for many years at Brighton Beach reports that the work of improving the property acquired last August on Inion and Lin ¬ coln avenues is almost completed ami that visitors will find much to admire when the season opens in August AugustIt It will be remembered that the Saratoga man ¬ agement when they bought the triangle between their main course and Horse Haven announced that t area would be made to harmonize with the remainder of their property An ornate iron fence marks the now addition and as soon as the weather permits flowering shrubs trees and plants will be installed There will be a now and commodious entrance near the lower end of tho property through which all automobile traffic for tho club house and also much of a general character will be handled the former entrance being reserved exclusively for patrons of the grandstand grandstandTho Tho track itself came through the winter in good condition and the harrows will be used on it next week if the weather remains fine The steeplechase course has been thoroughly rolled and should be better than ever before Klcctric lights have been placed throughout the avenues in Horse Haven and most of tho stables have had electricity Installed All stables in Horse Haven have been whitewashed whitewashedI I cannot understand why somebody doesnt win ¬ ter their horses at Saratoga said Mr Clare We have many stables with southern exposure and while the weather is cold the air is dry anil horses do remarkably well My work horses have coats like silk right now There is nothing better than snow for a badlegged horse and Saratoga had a particularly fine brand of the beautiful tho past winter winterIt It is understood that President Richard T Wilson will return from the South within the next ten days and no doubt one of his first trips after visiting hi horses at Helmont Park will be to Saratoga as he is proud of the course and greatly Interested in its Improvement and beautificaton Breeding Stock Never So High BREEDING STOCK NEVER SO HIGH Thoroughbreds never commanded a HORSES SHOULD BE WELL SCHOOLED The Uso and Abuse of Blinkers Responsible for t Inconsistent Racing Nothing in connection with racing has a more important bearing on tho outcome of a contest than tho starting It is an obligation on the part of every trainer to have his candidates for racing specially the twoyearolds thoroughly schooled at the barrier It will make the starters work easier iind improve tho general situation as far as the public Is concerned for there is nothing more exasperating than to see wild unbroken juveniles delaying a start and In tho end destroying not only their own chances but frequently those of the starters on either side of them themIn In this connection It would bo well not to allow the use of blinkers until the animal wearing them lias been broken away from tho barrier one or more times in the new equipment In some in ¬ stances where this precaution is not taken a horse will remain at the post until the others of the field have come into his vision This is fatal es ¬ pecially in these days of sprint racing A few lessons at the gate would obviate the danger dangerThere There is no more abused privilege than that of tho use or nonuse of blinkers It is responsible for much of the inconsistent racing Frequently when an animal changes hands the new trainer pleads Ignorance of the horses previous equipment equipmentDally Dally Racing Form is accurate A glam at its chart will reveal whether the horse wears blinkers and If so there should be no change until the officials nra satisfied that there is a sound reason therefor Page 2 DAILY RACING FORM FAIR AND UNFAIR RACING PLATES Trainers Think Samples Should Be Exhibited An Expert Is Needed Trainers on the metropolitan courses are in a quandary as to what will be considered as meeting the requirements of The Jockey Club The new rule dcing away with toe and heel calks is now in force but there arc those in the fraternity who think there should be some demonstration of what constitutes fair and unfair examples examplesLast Last autumn when the subject was under dis ¬ cussion it was siiggesled that a case containing samples of plates that would be acceptable to the authorities and those coming under the ban should be displayed in the paddock at all courses Samples of plates now in use in France are in the hands of some American trainers and examples have been inspected by Daily Racing Form The best is a perfectly plain plate with the outer rim slightly rounded An inner rim also rounded and set on a level with the outside flange would seem to protect slipping slippingMuch Much of the objection to toe and heel calks came from those whose1 horses had been injured or ruined through being kicked while at the post but there was aNo complaint that some owners were not consistent in their shoeing methods The daily inspection of the feet of all horses before going to the post and the uniformity of plates should mean fewer crippled horses and more con ¬ sistent racing racingIt It goes without saying that the officials who will examine the feet of the various horses should be experts Carmody Promising Young Rider CARMODY PROMISING YOUNG RIDER James Carmody who was the find of the season amon the apprentice riders at Oriental Park Havana is a youngster in all that the word implies lie got his first pair of long trousers in February Carmody is utterly unspoiled by the success which has come to him and tin experts predict a bright future for him if he doesnt acquire weight too rapidly rapidlyHis His method of handling a horse recalls that of Henry Griffin when that oldtimer was at the top his career Griffin didnt weigh 100 pounds when he won the Futurity with The Butterflies for Gideon it Daly in 1SS 4 Griffin hail the faculty of making the other fellows go to the whip first and most of his head finishes were won by icy confidence at the critical moment The records for ihi Havana meeting will show that Carmoily lost few races when it became a matter of inches at the finish finishFa Fa tor didnt show as much promise as Carmody with the same amount of experience at Havana during the searon 1 1 1 yet last autumn he was considered one of the best riders on the metropoli ¬ tan courses especially over a long distance of ground Carmody will ride as a free lance during the Havre de Grace meeting meetingIt It is to be hoped that races exclusively for horses to be ridden by apprentices will be featured this year as these bring out some promising young ¬ sters who would otherwise not have an opportunity to show their skill TJie kit and camera studying the habits of Louisi iiim wild life says the TimesPicayune of New Orleans It was for this purpose that Lord Percy stopped off in Louisiana on his way to an extensive exploration trip through western South Africa AfricaWhen When the Alexandria flagship of the conserva ¬ tion fleet came to her moorings in New Orleans there descended the gangplank Commissioner M L Alexander of the State Department of Conservation former Congressman George Shims of Pittsburgh 1a T C Walcott president of the Dtilop Hubber Company naturalist and writer anil Charles Shel ¬ don author and naturalist Washington I c cThe The Alexandria had just completed an clevciiday voyago to Marsh Island Avery Island Grand Chenler and along the coast almost to the Texas line visit ¬ ing all the great refuges of the stale the distin ¬ guished parties aboard being the guests of Commis ¬ sioner Alexander AlexanderThe The trip was made at the suggestion of the Inited States Biological Survey and the observations of those aboard will be made subject matter of a report to Dr K W Nelson director of the United States Piological Survey SurveyS S impressed was Ixird 1ercy who was of the party when it left here with what he saw in southern Louisiana waters that he declined to re ¬ turn with the Alexandria and will spend an addi ¬ tional week in the wilds studying what he ile sribes as the west coast of South America It is his intent inn to study bird life in Ieru hilt the Argentine on the pampas of Patagonia and on the rock wastes of Terra del Fncgo the island at the extreme tip of the South American continent Lord Percy is especially interested in wild ducks and is a naturalist by instinct instinctWONDERS WONDERS OF THE SOUTHERN WILDS WILDSThe The voyage of the Alexandria covered a distance of about three hundred miles throimh the marshes and along the coast of Louisiana every refuge for wild life in that section being visiUd visiUdLouisiana Louisiana has the most oxtensive and important feeding areas for wildfowl in the Inited States said Mr Walcott 1 was amazed at their extent and the vast colonies of migratory birds they en ¬ tertain During the entire trip I did not hear a single gnu fired which speaks well for the observ ¬ ance of the game law in this state for surely no greater temptation was ever offered to a hunter Everywhere the people showed the utmost good will toward the Department of Conservation whose ef ¬ forts they seem to appreciate This feeling was prevalent even among old market hunters who arc it distinguished for their regard for law The situation here must have been handled with the utmost tact ami the results achieved are most commendable commendableNo No more distinguished party of naturalists has visited Louisiana in decades than that which accom ¬ panied Commissioner Alexander on the trip tripIx Ix rd Percy has had a most interesting career lie is a lawyer by profession but a naturalist by inclination Years ago lur deserted the bar for collected during the thirtyodd years of its existence were distributed to other organizations or to individuals affiliated with racing One of the most interesting is a collection f racing plates which had been worn by renowned performers over the course at Sheepshead Utiy This went to The Jockey Club and it now hangs above the desk of assistant secretary Da inger field fieldThere There are of these plates seven in all taken from the feet of Firenze Potomac Salvator Tenny Domino Tournament and Proctor Knott All r plain with the exception of those worn by Domino and Tournament Each of these has L toe calk In addition Tournaments plate is ornamented by heel calks calksThe The feet of these great performers are a study No two are alike in shape Those of Domino and Firene were almost round while Salvadors and Potomacs were most irregular Dominos plate is the most symmetrical of the collection Tournaments foot was largest and in life he undoubtedly would outweigh any of the others as lit was a horse of great bone and muscle Proctor Knotts foot was the smallest Bennington Should be a Mudlark BENNINGTON SHOULD BE A MUDLARK Edward Nash who has the twoyearold colt Bennington by Fair Play
