PROSPECTS COCHRAN COLT BRED TO STAY AND RACE WELL IN ANY ANYSORT SORT OF GOING GIFTED WITH SPEED AND HELD HELDTO TO BE DANGEROUS IN THE BIG RACE From all reports the Kentucky Derby field will this year be of unusually generous proportions lvery day now one hears of another certain starter and on this account it is to be hoped that the race will be run oil its merits and that no crowding or jostling will occur to impair the chances of any and it is to be hoped the best horse may win more particularly so now that the Kentucky Derby has become a race of such national importance that the winning thereof insurer for the victor liberal patronage in after life as a sire All owners are of course anxious to lead in the winner and it is now practically certain that Her ¬ sagliere and the filly Cleopatra will be found competing for the prize Hersagliere was not by any means overdone in a racing way as a youngster in fact he only once faced the starter and this came about in the running of a liveeighths race at Saratoga in which he made no show behind Truly Knral Hasten On and Arrow Point I do not pretend to know the cause of Hersaglieres early retirement from racing but I do know him to be well in himself this year as witness his meritorious performance when linishing third to Peace Pennant and Prince Pal in the Frankfort here in Lexington last Monday True enough the colt was sharply interfered with in the running and stumbled to boot in the stretch but is a strong wellgrown bay as by the way are almost all of the progeny of his sire His Majesty On the Lexington course Thursday between races Hersagliere was given a spj omul the muddy track and to all appear ¬ ances traveled smoothly and well and should be a lit horse on Derby Day DayHersagliere Hersagliere is bred Matchem to Kclipsp and his granddam Hiturica is a daughter of the Herod horse Hamburg The main thing about this blending of the blood of Herod Matchem and Kclipsc is that it works Only last Wednesday at Newmarket Tetratema which is bred Herod to Kclipsp won the Two Thousand and it is only four years since George Smith which is bred on precisely the same plan of mating as Hersagliere won the Kentucky Derby hence I cannot afford to miss the opportunity of turn ¬ ing in the pedigree of such a wellbred and promising colt coltHis His Majesty Hersaglieres sire is but a beginner yet being foaled as recently as 1110 and is by Ogdeu winner of the Futurity and sire of such good longdistance runners as Sir Martin The Finn and Star Jasmine and is a member of the famous Dance family tracing back through Her Majesty the Futurity winner The Kuttorllies and Lady Hardaway daughter of Hustons son Commodore CommodoreVeil Veil dam of Kersagliero was t good winner herself and is sister to the Futurity winner Maskette dam of Mr Vanderbilts this years French winner Maskara and by Disguise a thorough Kclipsc out cross for the Matchem Ogden Disguise is practically certain of increasing success as a brood mare sire for so is he bred Kituricas sire Hamburg before this lias headed the winning brood mare sire list and is by Hanover Lady Keel by Fellowcraft son of the Matchem horse Australian Moreover Hersagliere is a member of the Kcoswing branch of the No S family from which come Newminster Ayrshire Melton St Serf Perth Sun Hriar etc and bred as he is it would surprise me not at all to see Hersagliere turn out to be one of the racing finds of the year and at all events lie is well enough bred to be for usV as a sire should he succeed in his endeavor to win tin Kentucky Derby Hence allowance is made for his poor Hlue Jrass race On the level and fast Churchill Downs track Hersagliere may run back to his good work and prove the winner winnerAccording According to general at her best over a Ion distance of ground but you nil know these Ullies It is im ¬ possible t guess them On her last appearance in public in Lorraine conceding eighteen pounds was unluckily beaten neck over tin thrceijiiartcrs course at tliurcliill Downs by Dr Ilicknian and just previous to this had made no show behind Itusy Signal in the running of the Golden Rod Handicap but at Latonia she at evens beat Peace rennant by a neck over a milt course standing a hard drive and oiittinisliing the son of McOec and also was loo stood for Valley Park Maid and Mile Da2ie in a live eighths dash at Latonia LatoniaIten Iten Itrush sire of Lorraine is as you know of Itonnie Scotland descent iu the male line and the only stallion to ever head the American sire list which does not trace to a figure taproot but lieu Itrush is a member of the best American family of all that of Maria West Amy J is also tlio dam of the Precdcrs Futurity winner Luke a oreeycd colt witli a quick turn of speed though possessed of but slight powers of endurance However the change from Peter Quince to Hen Urush must be of benefit for these Itonnie Scotland according to the dictum of trainer James Rowe can always be relied on to stive tiie best that is in them Lorraine a hay was as a twoyearold a rangy rather unfurnished filly but one which should make more than average improvement and I rather take Lorraines sire lien Irush to be a pure dominant for bay and brown for I have yet to see his chestnut son or daughter and would take it as a favor if anyone who knows of a chestnut Jen Itrush to so inform me Lorraine is bred on the most successful plan of matins there is Eclipse to Herod dam Amy T being by Pendorau a son of the New Zealander Sir Mod red Sir Modred in his home 1 won a number of races including the 7 C Cup Canterbury Derby and on being sent to Australia won the A J C Metropolitan Sir Modred was of course imported into California by the late James 1 llaggin and met with much success at Rancho del Paso as a sire and was by Tradticer sire of nine winners of the C J C Derby and a son of The Libel which runs back to Herod by way of Pantaloon Castrel Huzzard and Woodpecker Umn dam of Itendoran is a sister to Hen Strome by Item Or Strathtleet by Scottish Chief and a member of the sire family No 11 Fair Recluse is at least on paper a wellbred daughter of tiie Two Thousand winner Galliard the appearance of whose name always gives strength to a pedigree for is lie not the sire of War Dance and the dams of Hay Ronald and Itroomstick and it is by the way of these two that the lines of Hampton and Itonnie Scotland are best perpetuated Milliards ecollciice 1 believe to be due to his Galopin descent and to the fact of his dam Mavis being a daughter of the best brood mare sire of all Macaroni Royal Nun which follows is a daughter of that extra good brood mare sire Hermit and so runs the pedigree through Princess Mary II by Tox ophilite an unnamed daughter of Young Melbourne The Rescued and Pliysalis by Hay Middleton to the Hustler mare taproot of the No S family Yes a wonderful pedigree on paper but for some reason great and good winners are not forthcoming Pliysalis is of course the granddam of those two inliuential Matchem sires Rapid Rhone and Prother to Strafford the former of which has had so much to do with the success of the Honny Doon branch of the Queen Mary family ami the latter goes it strong for the Maid of Masham line but good as it appears this branch of the No S family lias not furnished anything of special in a racing way except it be through Pergola by The Ha run branch in France and even then it required the offices of the Herod Flying Dutchmans son Dollar to brini briniTraining Training operations on account of the excessive precipitation here are almost at a standstill and the Derby less than two weeks away I therefore hardly anticipate seeing Lorraine quite at her best yet awhile but am of the opinion that as the season Chance If Started In The Derby Exile SWIFT FILLY DERBY CANDIDATE SOME OF CLEOPATRAS RACING LAST YEAR CONSID ¬ ERED IN CONNECTION WITH HER HIGHCLASS BREEDING GIVES HER A CHANCE IF IFSTARTED STARTED IN THE DERBY DERBYx x B y E X I L E EAs As a result of last years Saratoga racing I formed the opinion that Cleopatra was only just behind Constancy in point of racing merit in fact the daughter of Corcyra finished ahead of Commander Ross representative though behind Man o War in the running of the Hopeful Cleopatra beat Upset when in receipt of fifteen pounds for the Pelmont Park Champagne Stakes and ran second to Dr Clark beaten only a half length for the Nursery Handicap From this brief summary of Cleopatras twoyearold racing it may judged that she as a juvenile was possessed of considerable merit but these fillies are uncertain and I will defy anyone to even remotely guess what change either for better or for worse will come over any of them from two to three However should Cleopatra retain her juvenile form Sim must be accorded some sort of support for her breeding if for nothing else for the Kentucky Derby DerbyCorcyra Corcyra Cleopatras sire is of Bend Or descent by way of the three times champion sire Polymelus and his dam Pearmaiu a daughter of that extra good brood mare sire Persimmon and Pen mm in a mem ¬ ber of theKsa by Uncas branch of the Xo 1 family The most attractive feature of Cleopatras breed ¬ ing lies in the fact that her dam Galice is a daughter of that outandout success as a brood mare sire Gallinule St Cecilia Cleopatras granddam is three parts sister to the One Thousand Guineas winner Winifreda by St Serf and is a member of the Hybla Kettledrum branch of the Two True lUue family As a rule I do not fancy fillies for early spring racing but there is the Regret precedent to be got over and if given a race and fit and well Cleopatra even though she meets defeat in the Derby will be found cajiable of holding her own later in the year
