SPECIAL EDITION Lunetta's Catskill Stakes: Fast Filly Defeats Ararat and Valor with Ease LUNETTA'S CATSK1LL STAKES ! . ' Fast Filly Defeats Ararat and Valor with Ease. r- Rank Outsider Wins the Steeplechase in a Thrilling Finish ! 'i Favorites Prove Deluders. 5 , SARATOGA, X. Y.. August I.iiuvttsi. which ' recently was acquired by .1. H. Madden, continues her winning Wii.vs ami tliis afternoon made it four t straight when she accounted for the Catskill Stakes, worth. $3..VJ5 not, ran seven-eighths in 1:24 ami ( won canity from Harry Payne Whitney's Ararat, j with the favorite. Valor, following closely. Her j victory, however, brought a change in her owner- i ship, being hid ui and bought by Sam Louis for X7.000. an advance of :j3,(i00 over lier entered price ; or $1,000. Her light impost of 100 pounds was a big factor in her success, but at that she gave her supporters considerable concern when she lagged badly iii the early racing, while Ararat, with a ; good display of speed, had taken a long lead. Valor and Sweep Clean were the closest followers of the leaders for half a mile. Lunctta got set- lied in hot- stride just before making the last turn , and began an onrush which quickly sent her past ; Sweep Clean ami Valor and in the last eighth she challenged and subdued Ararat, to ultimately win with case. Ararat had little difficulty in outstaying Valor for second place. The stake race was the principal offering in a monetary way during the afternoon, but five other good dashes contributed to hriiig out a fairly large ttfcTns'ltftend:inre. ' Some good sport was for'th-coililng, albeit the races carried disappointments iii the failure of favorites to race up to expectations. The steeplechase, in which only fur started, was tlie most spectacular of any at this meeting arid finally culminated in the victory of Flying Scout, a gray son of Oxford Clasher, the only jumper of this color now actively participating in cross-country racing. Royal Arch followed the winner and Wisest Fool finished third. The finish of the trio was a thriller, the gray horse gaiugiug steadily after covering the last obstacle and by an extra game effort got up i'l the final strides to win by a neck, the same margin separating Koyal Arch from Wisest Fool, with Ilibler many lengths in back. During the early part of the race and until the next to the last jump, Ilibler had dominated the running and had fenced the cleanest, but he gave way badly when challenged, Royal Arch was impeded by him when going to the last jump when Haynes on Hihier forced him wide. This might have had a bearing on the result. Wisest Fool, after a blunder at the tenth jump, could not settle fully to his stride again until at the fifteenth jump, but he continued on gamely. The winner, however, was :i good horse this afternoon and fully justified his victory. HARVEST FOR LAWN OPERATORS. The lawn operators reaped a harvest by his victory, for in addition to the customary prejudices iigainst betting on a gray horse, few regarded, him lis haying a chance to land the victory. But his sire, Oxford, was also a gray and a capital race Horse when campaigned in his prime by Gwyn Tompkins. Ill the Pittstown mile handicap, with starters that had not won at any time a race of ifJ.OOO value. Koutlcdgc and Smoke Screen were thought to have the race between them. Routlcdgc. because of his good showing in a previous essay when In; finished second and forced Thunderclap to a hard drive, was held in the most esteem, but his performance was decidedly off color and he finally finished a distant lust. Smoke Screen, from a fast beginning, held to his lead all (he way and won after completing the ihile in 1:37. Iady Gertrude plodded along steadily until in the last eighth, where she roused up and outstayed Rcllsolar for second place after a spirited drive. Another favorite caused woe for the talent in the fifth race, also a mile dash, and bringing to the post some speedy ones. The one having the call here was the frequently disappointing Dartmoor, in Harry Payne Whitney's colors. He managed to finish third after a hard race, the winner here turning up in Two Feathers, carrying an impost of 121 pounds, witli John Paul Jones in second place. The outsider Haywood forced the early running, with John Paul Jones following, and Two Feathers in last place, just slightly in back of I'olythia. Two Feathers began his dash just before reacling the stretch and. saving much ground' here, drew out swiftly in the stretch, to win as his rider pleased: The showing of Polythia was far below her best form and she had all four legs ilicased in bandages. The downfall of favorites began in the opener when Surmount and Ting-a-l.ing were given preference, hut were nowhere at the finish. Ting-a-Ling wheeled at the start and was left, as was Monastery, and .Surmount was always outrun. ISluc Belle scurried into a long lead under the busy Penman's alert tactics and never left the result in doubt, winning with speed in reserve from Liberty Girl, proniiuent from the start, hut forced at the end to do her best to retain second place from the fust-coming Ocean Swell. SNOB II. ONLY FAVORITE TO WIN. Maiden two-year-olds were again called on to conclude the day's racing and in this instance the Jphn 'Sanford owned Snob II., coupled witli 1'ietrus as an entry, was tin; overwhelming choice and saved the favorite backers from a total Waterloo by scoring from Suureigh. but only after Snnde on the favorite had been forced to exert his best skill to overhaul Suureigh. Snob II., under his hard riding, succeeded in the last sixteenth in winning by his length, while ten or fifteen lengths away followed rietrus. The horses formerly raced by S. A. Clopton have been taken over by Placide Frigerio. who will use the Hum de iimrxe of . Orleans Stable. The horses .(OotlB-M4 on moud pi.). LUNETTA'S CATSKILL STAKES (Continued from first pnge). will be trained by Albert Simons. Jockey Colti-letti's contract was also taken over and he will do the riding for the stable. The are thirteen old horses and five yearlings in the establishment. II. C. (Bud) Fisher, after Dr. McCully's report this afternoon, took over Sporting Blottd at a big price, but not made known. A contingency attached to the sale is that the Redstone Stable shall receive a percentage of the horse's winnings in the Realization Stakes and the Latonia Championship Stakes, in which two races lie will be a starter, barring mishaps. The Fisher horses will leave for Latona immediately after the running of the Futurity, In which Violinist and Bud Fisher are intended starters. M. L. Schwartz's Column was not as gravely Injured as reported and, excepting for a badly bruised shoulder as a result of being kicked by Stout Heart, will be in racing fettle again in a week or ten days. Jockey X. Barrett departs tonight for Latonia, where he will ride for J. M. Goode during the Kentucky racing. Frank J. Kelley's horses will be shipped to Latonia tonight in charge of Fred Smith, the stable's foreman. George Land, who trains the horses" and was recently operated on for appendicitis, is progressing stendily and will be able to leave for Kentucky next week. Miss Joy was given a sensational work-out of five-eighths of a mile in 59 this morning in preparation for the Spinaway Stakes, to be run Saturday. She covered the quarter in 22, three--eighths in 34 and half mile in 40. Jake Greenberg has turned Natural Bridge and Barracuda over to Pat Knebelkamp to train. J. A. Coburn, who is administrator of the S. A. Clopton estate, has also been appointed agent for the newly-formed Orleans Stable. Today's visitors included jockeys Juan Segui and Anthony Doria, who have been riding with much success in South American countries. They recently came from Venezuela. They are at present negotiating to ride for W. A. Carter in Cuba next winter. Roscoe Troxler, who Is campaigning several horses here at present, intends to remain in the East and contemplates purchasing about four more racers to take to Xew Orleans next winter. Harry Shaw, accompanied by his wife, intends to make the trip to Xew Orleans by automobile at the close of racing In the East. Benjamin Block, owner of the unbeaten two-year-old Morvich, returned today from a week's vacation spent at Champlnin Lake, near Bluff Point, N. Y. He plans to stay for the remainder of the racing season. Trainer Louis Feustel returned from Belmont Park, where ho went to receive the band of yearlings sent there to August Belmont from. the. Nursery Stud at Lexington, Ky. A persistent rumor that jockey Keogh had died suddenly Tuesday afternoon finally was set at rest when the jockey repeated Mark Twain's famous "the report of my death lias been greatly exaggerated." lie is resting comfortably and expects to be around in a few days and is kept indoors at present as a measure of precaution. It was reported this afternoon that starter Cas-sidy proposes to extend leniency to the riders that have been suspended for the remainder of the meeting and will modify the suspensions to terminate next Saturday, to enable them to ride their contract employers' representatives in the Hopeful Stakes. Thirty Mondy Winning Horses: Grey Lag Holds Undisputed Title to Leadership Morvich Makes Notable Gains and is Now Fourth on the List ! ! 'i ' t ( j j i ; ; , ; THIRTY MONEY WINNING HORSES GREY LAG HOLDS UNDISPUTED TITLE TO LEADERSHIP MORVICH MAKES NOTABLE GAINS AND IS NOW FOURTH ON THE LIST Although Grey Lag has not raced at Saratoga, the crack Star Shoot three-year-old still holds undisputed possession of lirst place on the list of thirty leading money winners of the year. He has won nine races ami met defeat but once in ten starts, his earnings reaching the quite, imposing figure of $57,-130. The dead IJroomspun is second, on the list with $1 4,200, with the Kentucky Derby winner Behave Yourself following with .$10,800. Then comes the undefeated Morvich with eight straight victories and $2!).4SI to his credit. He is considered the peer of the two-year-old colts and there is only Miss Joy to dispute the claim of his admirers that he is the best juvenile of the year. The decision of the many valuable Saratoga stake races lias made quile a difference in the totals wou by the leaders, and it will be noticed that sixteen of tiie thirty leaders have won in excess of $20,000. The rich Hopeful and Futurity Stakes will soon be run and their decision will add considerably to these totals. Out.. August 24. W. G. Weant'f Photoplay, the speed- daughter of Allieling II. Envy, was returned the winner of the handicap, which featured the closing day's program of the Windsor Jockey Club. The winner was much the best and ran a splendid race to easily defeat the Grcontree Stable's Aloft. She , met with severe interference at the far turn where Barnes was forced to take her up and go to the outside of her opponents. Once clear she gained rapidly and drew away in a decisive manner at the end to win by ti safe margin. Aloft and Johnny . Dundee put up a desperate battle for second place. The former had set a fast pace from the start, but his effort t dispose of the -winner told at the end and he barely withstood the fast but belated rush of Johnny Dundee. A mishap occurred. during the running of this race, 'essie B. unseating her rider, C. Lang, who, however, escaped with a severe 'shaking up. The race, which was at three-quarters of a" mile, vas run in 1:12, the best time for two-year-olds here at the meeting. Mr. Weant was the recipient or several flattering offers for Photoplay following the running of the race, but he- turned 'them down, for they nowhere approached the .figure.-lie had placed on her. The closing day's card was one of the best offered at the meeting. Ideal weather conditions 'prevailed, with the result that one of the largest crowds of the meeting was on hand to bid farewell, to the racers. The track was at its best and fakt time recorded. The running of a handicap at three-quarters of a mile for horses of the older division, which divided interest with the two-year-old feature, resulted in an upset when Judge Ellsworth got iqi to beat Eddie Kiekenhacher, the public choice. The winner was ridden by C. Lang and he kept his mount under restraint from the fast early pace. At the turn into the homestretch ' he sent Judge Ellsworth through between the favorite and Dodge and assumed the lead at the eighth post. Judge Ellsworth then drew away to win by- a length and a half in the fast time of 1:11 Vi- Eddie Kiekenhacher ran a sparkling race under -his 'heavy impost. FORT BLISS RETURNS TO FORM. The opening race saw tlie return to form of the speedy Fort Bliss, and the son -of Dick Welles ran like his daddy did many years ago over tlie Chicago tracks. The distance of the race was three-quarters of a mile, and Fort Bliss ran it in 1:11, leading all the way and never in danger. Tlie second and third races were at tlie same distance, one mile and an eighth, to which fillies and , mares were excluded. Nonskid won the third and Omer K. the fourth. Botli are three-year-olds and had light weights up.- The first -mentioned success was unexpected, but Omer K. was the favorite. At private terms Mrs. G. II. Abbott purchased from W. Walker the contract which the latter held on the services of jockey C. Duggan.' The hitter has ridden some good races here and should be better suited with his new -employer. Before his departure for Montreal this afternoon Joseph McLennan had completed arrangements whereby a seven-car express train : will leave following the last race tonight and arrive in Montreal Thursday afternoon in ample time to unload before dark. A notice posted in the secretary'.s office from Louisville states that William Bradley, a follower of racing, had lost a son, Elmer, in" .an automobile accident yesterday and was requested to get in communication with home at once. W. M. Ryan announced yesterday that he had severed his connections with J. MaeManus .and P. Magui. Ryan trained King's Champion for the former. Jockey E. Pool was suspended for the last day . by starter Morrissey for disobedience at the post yesterday. Jockeys J. McTaggart and C. Lang departed for Montreal following tlie running of the fourth race. McTaggart will stay there for the Dorval meeting and Lang will return here after the opening day. Trainer Howard Oots announced this morning that James Heffering's recent acquisition. Fair Gain, has arrived. The horse shipped in good condition and will be seen under colors' before loug. SARATOGA SPRINGS, X. Y.. August 24. It remained for one of P. A. Clark's colored stable hands to solve a problem that had worried trainer James Kowe for several mouths, according to tin-la tier's own admission. The groom in question "rubs" Nancy Lee. which defeated Prudery by a matter of inches in tlie Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs last spring, and no man could be prouder of a thoroughbred than he is of the daughter of Broomstick Naughty Lady. A few days, ago Kowe chanced to pass the P. A. ('lark stable in "Horse Haven." and decided to take a look at Nancy Lee just for curiosity, as he is always interested in any horse with Broomstick blood in its veins. Trainer Jack McConnack had her led out and when the groom saw that he was going to display her for the benefit of Kowe, by wlioni he formerly was employed, lit; was all iigog. After looking her over for a few minutes, the Whitney trainer took occasion to compliment Me-Cormack upon her splendid appearance and made the prediction that she will be heard from often in tlie future. "What puzzles inc. however," said Kowe. "is how this filly ever beat Prudery in the Oaks at Louisville." The colored stable hand did not give trainer McConnack a chance to reply. "I can tell you how," lie spoke up. "and I know that you will agree with me. Mr. Kowe. It wasn't Nancy Lee whipping' Prudery. It was just old Broomstick beating Peter Pan, and lie will do it again any time they hook up." Kowe readily agreed that this was- the nearest that anybody ever came to explaining the failure of Prudery to win the Oaks, but he still has his doubts as to whether "Broomstick can heat Peter Pan again." . Current Notes of the Turf CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF The majority of tlie horses which summered at Lexington will ship to Latonia on or before August 29. Eleven yearlings, the property of J. K. L. NEW YORK, X. Y., August 24. Hunt club meetings in the vicinity of Xcw York, Philadelphia and Baltimore will be unusually numerous this year, according to present prospects. The United Hunts Racing Association is to lead off on Thursday, September 1, with a series of races and steeplechases at Belmont Park Terminal. There will be a day's sport later in the autumn under the auspices of the Meadow Brook Club on Long Island and another at the headquarters of the Fairfield and Westchester Hounds near Greenwich. Conn. In New Jersey the Wliippuny River Club has announced a hunt meeting on Saturday. November 5, while the Essex Fox Hounds Club will follow it up one week later with an important meeting at Far Hills. Pennsylvania, which has long been headquarters for fox hunting and hunt meetings, is to have a notable series of cross-country races, beginning on October S with the meeting of the Huntingdon Valley Hunt Club at Willow Grove, Pa. The meeting of the White Marsh Valley Hunt Club will follow on October 15 at Flourtown, Pa., and the ancient Rose Tree Fox Hunting Club will give two days of hunt racing at Media, Pa., on Wednesday, October 19, and Saturday, October 22. The meeting of the Pickering Hunt Club is scheduled for Thursday, November 12, while the Radnor Hunt Club will wina up the season with a meeting at Bryn Mawr oi. Thursday, November 24. ' Point to point racing is to be a prominent feature of these meetings, nearly all of which will be held on uniuclosed grounds and most of ' which boast or having no laid out courses or grandstands. All flat races will be run on the turf and not on a track. Point to point races, which are rapidly gaining in popularity, perhaps because they afford so good a test of a hunter, are virtually a revival of the original sport of steeplechasing. They are run from one conspicuous point to another, the riders being permitted to choose their own course across country in reaching them. At some meetings it Is customary to mark the jumps with flags, but this savors of the modern steeplechase, where the whole course is flagged to guide the riders. The early steeplechases, it is supposed, took their name from the custom among fox hunters of racing their horses to some distant church steeple, each rider, of course, taking a line of his own. Trainer A. B. Gordon, who has charge of the H. C. Fisher stable, in all probability holds the record of recent years for losing horses in claiming and selling races; When Gipsy Lad -was taken from him several days ago Ik; enumerated twenty-nine others that "halteimen" had led from his barn, and he did not go far back, either. "I don't think that I ever racM over any track that I did not lose ' a horse," said Gordon, "and it is only here lately that I acquired any in felling and claiming races. Nobody seems to bother horses that I train for somebody else, but just let me start one in my own name and have it show a fair performance and it Is not long until it goes to some other stable." Grey Lag is Training Soundly GREY LAG IS TRAINING SOUNDLY SARATOGA, X. Y., August 24. Trainer S. C. Hildreth is taking no chances with Grey Lag since his last mishap, which put him on the shelf for several weeks, and the colt's training is all being done over the sandy Oklahoma course. He has not been on tin- main track for some time, but Hildreth is of the opinion that it will not be long until he is ready for racing again. Since Photoplay won there could be no controversy about the wager on her. It should be paid. The "if coming" place wager on Bygone Days was defective in that no sum was mentioned to go on him. But the bookmaker took a wager on 'him of some amount and he should at least allow it to be as much as was on Photoplay and pay accordingly. Pat I).. Xow Orleans, La. (1) Minute Man was not an added starter. See reply covering the case in paper of August 23. (2) The race won by Cimarron was a stake race. In the East starters can lie added in stake races up to a specified time bi'fore the race and people away from the' track are bound to keep that fact in mind. Layers now generally operate under the rule that added starters run for the book. C. A. Stoneham Buys Five Yearlings C. A. ST0NEHAM BUYS FIVE YEARLINGS SARATOGA SPRINGS, X. Y., August 24. Personally, I have considerable respect for many systems which, if carried out on sound lines and adhered to, often prove remunerative. The trouble with a fixed scheme, as I see it, is the human element with which one always has to contend, and more often than not one finds a system which would have paid in the long run given up because of its failure in the first stages. One good point in favor of most systems is that they limit one's loss, though, per contra, the winnings are usually also cramped, which hardly suits the majority of punters, who at any rate like to dream of fortunes. The other day a friend of mine told me a rather amusing tale (except for those immediately concerned) of a gentleman who expounded a certain system for a select few. It required his presence on a racecourse, to be a success and all that was needed was the usual small capital. After a certain amount of persuasion a syndicate was formed on modest lines. True to his word, the financial and race course expert worked with great zeal, and each week returned a nice little dividend. As might have been expected the shareholders soon began to ask why it should not be possible to double or even triple their returns, with the result that more money was "invested" in (he "infallible-" concern. The system continued to produce wonderful results, and at the end of tin; mouth, (it was now too big to settle weekly) the profit figures had run into thousands. A general meeting was called to distribute the spoils, and all might have been well but for tin: chief executive officer missing his train. In fact, he had not only missed it. lint caught another to an unknown destination, where he is probably basking in the sun tit the present moment! You say: "What fools the other men must be." Yes; but, alas, I fear so many of us are, which rather coincides with the old saying "The world is made up of fools and knaves, and fortunately for- the knaves the fools predominate." To come back to serious consideration of the subject, however, the best system I know of is judiciously to follow horses on an "increasing stake" basis. 1 do not mean by this that one should pick out at the commencement of each season, say, a dozen horses and follow them blindly, hut to keep oncs eyes and ears open. and. having digested what you have seen and heard, put the horse's name in your notebook and follow him. A friend of mine has worked this scheme profitablr for years, and it is certainly the best I have Cotn'o across, allowing, as it does, plentv of scope for persnoal judgement, I had nearly forgotten to mention that my friend's system provided that as soon as a selected horse won he was struck off the list, and if he failed to earn a bracket in three attempts his name was also ruled out. His successes were amazing, but he was such a good judge of racing that he would probably have won monev without any system "Vigilant" in Loudon Sports-man. Current Notes of the Turf CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF t The Raucocas Stable's great racer Mad Hatter is in grand condition and is a certain starter in the Merchants and Citizens' Handicap, to be run at Saratoga Saturday. He will not be raced again until next year. Hats off! Hats off! HATS OFF! HATS OFF! It is related in a London paper that recently a man in a state of great agitation rushed into one or the rings after a race, shouting. "Hats off Hats off!" Almost unconsciously the order was obeved. and tl)en somebody asked, "Why? Is some ro'val personage coming along?" "Xo," replied the excited one; "I've boen welshed by a bald-headed buokmaker and I'm trying to find luui." Thick-Winded Not Roarers: Cases of Toxophilite Long Ago and Persimmon and Sceptre More Recently THICK-WINDED NOT ROARERS Cases of Toxophilite Long Ago and Persimmon and Sceptre More Recently. Toxophilite has long been dead and turned to dust, but through his wonderful son, Musket, and the bitter's descendants Cabin, Spearmint. Maxim, Foul Shot and others which have; reached our shores, ho is still a potent factor in the breeding of England, Australia and the United States as well. This lends interest to the following observations concerning this horse from the entertaining pen of England's master turf writer, AV. Allison, under the head of "Thick AVind": "We have read a great deal about Toxophilite of late and his supposed roaring infirmity, which must be more or less of a niyth, seeing that he started favorite in the Derby of his year and finished second to Beadsman, won the Ascot Derby, the Don-caster Stakes and other races, while, as a four-year-old, he won over the Ditch In more than two miles and the Queen's Plate course at Goodwood, three miles five furlongs, beating Goahead and Gourd. This does not suggest any respiratory trouble at that time, and I suppose there never was a more severe course than that Queen's Plate one at Goodwood, which is never used now. They started at the Charlton Down, to the northwest of the stand, ran over to the east of the clump to go the outside circle of the hill and returned to the east of the .clump about three miles five furlongs. That was Toxophilite's last victory, but he ran for the Goodwood Cup (which we now know is close on two miles six furlongs) two days later, and there is, perhaps, little to wondvr at that in bis next race, the Burgundy Stakes at York August Meeting, we find the following Calendar record: "Four to 1 on Toxophilite. Toxophilite ruptured a blood vessel in the head and was pulled up at the distance." All this surely is against the tradition of his roaring, for who would lay 1 to 1 on a roarer over two miles, which was the distance of the race in question? CASES IN POINT. "I hardly think that stories about Toxophilite being a roarer are worthy of credence, nor does it really matter very much, anyway, for, as I said the other day, it is not possible to find a modern pedigree which is not chock-full of reputed roaring and bleeding lines, study it and excuse it as you may. There Is little doubt that many of the dubious cases may be classed under the head of thick wind, and animals so affected might be passed sound one day and rejected the next. Persimmon most certainly made a noise in running for the Middle Park Plate, when he was not quite up to the mark. Sceptre did so in most pronounced fashion in her first race at Goodwood, but after a strong gallop the next morning won, running away, jn the afternoon. She was, I believe, galloped two miles in the early morning when it was known that she was to be examined that day before the conclusion of her sale for $15,000. She and others of the Agnes family have inherited this peculiarity of thick wind it can hardy be styled an infirmity, for it does not stop them from covering any distance when they are fit. The only point against them is that they need to be clean wound up, and in a season like this "winding up" is a serious matter. It is nut disputed that Lemonora makes a noise of sorts, but it has not troubled him in the slightest degree when racing, and the Grand Prix fifteen furlongs over which he won is more severe than the fourteu furlongs at Doncaster. In short, there is really little or nothing to choose between Craig an Eran and Lemmiora, of which it is reckoned by some who should know best that Lemonora is at least as good a stayer as the 2,000 guineas winner, it not better. For myself, I cannot Imagine Craig an Eran failing to stay, but there is no doubt he hail better luck than his stable companion when running for the Derby, and the distance between them at the finish of the St. Lexer is not likely to be nearly so great, if they are both well on the day. Lemonora may owe his undoubted stamina to his double cross of Isonomy. The Agnes blood in his case does not come at the root of the pedigree, but through his graudam, AVord of Honour, by Saraband (son of Muncaster). Her dam Gehcimuiss was a wonder of speed, but diI not stay. This, however, was the sort of basis on which the late Duke of Beaufort liked to breed, using a staying horse and a speedy marc, and on that scheme of breeding he produced l'etronel, by Musket, out of the sprinting Crytheia. . TOXOPHILITE'S OWNER. "It is probably more than half-forgotten by now that Toxophilite. when he ran for the Derby, for which lie started favorite, was the properly of Lord Derby. Who. was then prime minister, with Mr. Disraeli as leader of the house of commons. The favoritism of Toxophilite for the Derby was due possibly in a large measure to the public wish that Iortl Derby should bring off the double event of premiership and the Derby, which would have been something like a triple in his case; but it did not Unite come off, and Beadsman beat him by a length. There was an interval of many years after before a British prime minister did actually win the Derbv in 1894. and that triumph fell to the lot of Lord Rosebery with Ladas, which brought off my double event prophecy, that his lordship would be premier and win the Derby that year. If was a great double indeed and the zenith of Lord Rosebery's great career, which, though it may be said to have reached the highest point of all its greatness then, by no means proceeded to 'sink to its setting,' for two other home-bred Derby winners Sir A'isto and Cicero followed, and Lord Rosebery himself has again and again delighted audiences and readers. I do not think he is many years older than I am. and there is plenty of time for him to breed another Derby winner, especially if Moutein, which he sent to Grey Fox this year, should prove in foal and produce a colt. She has never yet bred anything but fillies." Stake Dates for 1921 STAKE DATES FOR 1921 Huron Handicap. Saratoga Springs, N. Y.. August 25 Kentucky Selling Stakes, Saratoga Springs, N.
