CHICAGO, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1924 PRICE 15 CENTS Easily Triumphant: Sun Flag First in Pimlico Weight for Age Rae No. 2 EASILY TRIUMPHANT Sun Flag First in Pimlico Weight-for-Age Race No. 2. Scores Notable Success Over Two Such. Stars as Master Charlie and Zev. BALTIMORE. Md.. Nov. 8. G. A. Cochran's Sun Flag was winner of the second of the Pimlico Serial weight-for-ages races this afternoon. It was over the mile distance and chasing him home came Master Charlie, winner of the Hopeful and Kentucky Jockey-Club Stakes, with Zev, the greatest of American money winners, in third place. The other starter was Prince of Umbria. He was plainly outclassed and was well beaten. This was the feature of a thoroughly interesting program that attracted an immense crowd to the old Baltimore course. The victory of Sun Flag was in no sense a surprise after the speed that the good three-year-old has been showing in his races, but before the running of the mile Serial opinion was evenly divided between Master Charlie and Zev. No time was lost by Georgie Cooper, who rushed Master Charlie to the front, with Sun Flag after him, while Zev was outrunning Prince of Umbria. Going around the first turn Master Charlie bore out badly, as he has on other occasions. This enabled Sun Flag to draw up on him, but the two-year-old soon shook him off and again opened a lead. Leaving the backstretch Fator permitted Zev to run and. he moved on the first two in resolute fashion, but Master Charlie was still in command as he swung into the front stretch. MASTER CHARLIE OUTLASTS ZEV. Barnes challenged with Sun Flag an eighth from the finish and he was soon alongside of Master Charlie. The latter had little left and Sun Flag went on by to win going away by three lengths. Master Charlie stuck it out to save second place when Zev tired under the final drive and the two-year-olds beat him by a length. This was the first defeat suffered by Master Charlie since his sensational victory in the Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga Springs. He had Avon four races and besides the Hopeful his most notable achievement was his victory in the mile of the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs. This running suggested that Master Charlie is too much of a handfull for as light a rider as George Cooper and, though beaten, he gave an excellent account of himself. The Annapolis Highweight Handicap fell to Comixa. She was in front from the start and won by a half length from Vrana. Despite the narrowness of the victory 'it was an easy one. Comixa set the pace from a good start, with Cyclops racing in nearest pursuit, with Abu Ben Ahdem, General Thatcher and Vrana not far from the leaders. In the last eighth Vrana, the Canadian Derby winner and best filly seen in the Dominion racing of this year, challenged and quickly gained on the others. She passed all but Comixa and was only a half length behind the winner as they swept past the judges. Cyclops was third. STEEPLECHASE TO ETHEREAL BLUE. The cross-country offering of the day was the Autumn Green Spring Valley Steeplechase over the two and a quarter mile course. It resulted in rather a handy victory for J. E. Wideners Ethereal Blue over Da-mask t and Courteous. Courteous was the one to cut out the early running and for a turn ! of the field showed the way, with Ethereal 'Blue rating along back of him. Damask , raced fairly well up and for a time Vicaire was outrunning Lollipop. Dunks Green was without speed and quickly dropped out of it Ethereal Blue was taken up to Courteous twice in the run through the backfield, but when the Salmon jumper hung on Tamaro eased back and waited until the pacemaker had enough of showing the way. As he tired and dropped back, Kennedy moved up with Damask and it seemed that he would race over Ethereal Blue, but the filly had plenty left and when asked she drew out to leave the result no longer in doubt. H. P. "Whitney's Noah was winner of the 'three-quarters for second rater two-year-olds. "Break Well" McAtee at once went out into the lead and he was good enough to hold this command throughout Silver Fox was just as easily second best He left the post in good position but could not catch Noah in the stretch run. Barbara Frietchie was third after having raced forwardly most of the way. This was a race where no excuse could be found for Silver Fox. Ever since the Sara- l toga meeting this colt has been promising great things in the morning. He was away , well enough in this race and had absolutely no excuse. Rustic, the god son of Transvaal that races for A. H. Morris, worked a mile and three-' eighths this morning in preparation for his engagements in the Bowie and Pimlico Cups. He did his work in 2:27. The first mile and a quarter was in 2:12. Arrivals at New Orleans: Horses from All Sections of Country Reaching Crescent City Tracks Daily ARRIVALS AT NEW ORLEANS Horses From All Sections of Country Reaching Crescent City-Tracks Daily. NEW ORLEANS, La., Nov. S. Horses from Maryland, New York and Kentucky tracks, are arriving in New Orleans daily, to campaign through the winter racing season, which opens here Thanksgiving Day. Stable allotments have been taken up, at both the Fair Grounds and Jefferson Park, and it is predicted that there will be more thoroughbreds this year in the Crescent City, than at any other time in the history of southern turf. Announcement was made by President John Dymond, Jr., of the Business Men's Racing Association, that there would be several new barns built for prominent turf men, with tensive stables. Plans for a modernly equipped barn with thirty stalls, have been given to contractors and work on the first new structure will begin next week. The new barn is going to be put up for Payne Whitney of New York. Another new barn is to be constructed for S. N. Holman of Ohio. Several old barns will be torn down to make room for the new structures which will be electric lighted and equipped with shower baths for the stable help. The present site of the new Whitney barn, at the Fair Grounds, was at one time occupied by horses trained by Sam Hildreth, more than twenty years ago. It is expected that Mr. Hildreth will ship some of the Rancocas horses here for a winter campaign. E. R. Bradley the Kentucky breeder and owner of the Idle Hour Stock Farm stable, had his private barn of thirty stalls built at the Fair Grounds two years ago. The new Whitney barn will adjoin the Bradley structure and will compare favorably with many of the privately built barns at Belmont Park and Saratoga Springs. The Greentree stable consisting of twenty-nine horses will arrive here November 15, according to present schedule. Churchill Downs Closes: Great Crowd Present to See Final Day's Sport at Louisville CHURCHILL DOWNS CLOSES Great Crowd Present to See Final Day's Sport at Louisville Captain Hal Wins Golden Rod Handicap by Nar- row Margin From King Nadi Secondary Attraction to the Consistent Sunspero LOUISVILLE, Ky., Nov. S. The highly regarded Captain Hal accounted for the Golden Rod Handicap, featuring the closing day's card at Churchill Downs and worth ?5,S80 net to the winner, under an impost of 127 pounds, but his margin of victory was of such narrow proportions that it left a serious doubt as to his superiority over King Nadi at the weight arrangement that prevailed this afternoon. Captain Hal conceded King Nadi seventeen pounds. Both colts suffered from poor riding, Heupel, on the winner, making the blunder of subjecting Captain Hal to much usage in the early stages to wear down the non-staying Little Visitor, which was showing the way to the others. It caused Captain Hal to tire in the stretch after he had obtained what appeared a certain winning lead. The last eighth found him weakening steadily, but he continued in game style and passed the finish a nose in advance. King Nadi suffered by a weak ride, the first listless performance that Griffin has E)shown at the meeting. The youngster seemingly was under the impression that he would dispose of Captain Hal readily and the overconfidence cost the owner of King Nadi a handsome prize. From a spectacular point the race could not be improved on and the closeness of tae finish gave additional thrills. Only five engaged of the original fourteen carded, with Captain Hal a pronounced favorite. The suspension against Heupel was lifted to enable him to ride Captain Hal. After the first half mile the race was always between, the pair that fought out the finish, Blue Ridge landing in third place, having little uifficulty outstaying the tiring Little Visitor. The consistent Sunspero, which has figured in winning performances on several occasions since his coming to these parts, again scored when he led home a small but good band that started in the mile handicap, serving as the secondary feature. The five starters here were well matched and they raced closely grouped, Sunspero coming away in the stretch to beat Pegasus, with Price-maker leading the other pair in third place. WHITNEY COLORS TO FORE. H. P. Whitney's Bridesmaid was victress in the sixth race that brought to the post some good juveniles, including Deeming. The latter . was the favored one and seemed to have th race at her mercy an eighth out, but Bridesmaid, under vigorous handling, continued in game style and caught Deeming tiring in thu last twent yards and won by a short neck. Cream Puff, under hard pressure, managed to beat Beach Talk for third place. Speckled Beauty, after showing early speed, quit badly and finished lame. Racing under the auspices of the Kentucky Jockey Club terminated this afternoon for this year with an immense attendance at Churchill Downs in spite of unseasonable weather that prevailed. It has been one of the most remarkable years in the history of the Kentucky Jockey Club, by far the banner one, leplete with bright spots and many of the happenings will remain in racing history for all times. The sport at Churchill Downs and at La-tonia, since the opening of the season in May, has found steady favor with racing enthusiasts not alone in Kentucky, but throughout America, The rich stakes have ' been of world wide interest and the decision of the Third International Special was the racing epic of this country. WAPITI HOME FIRST. Already constructive plans are under way that will make for additional improvement in the sport and comfort of the patrons, for it is general manager Winn's intention to ketp the Kentucky Jockey Club tracks in the van of all courses in this country. Non-winners that started numerous times and regarded of a cheaper variety, engaged in the opening races. The first was at a mile and the winner turned up in Wapiti. He was much the best and Avon well under restraint from the outsider Halu, which succeeded in wearing down Wrangler for second place. Dorius and Sands of Pleasure found favor with the big crowd, but Wapiti was at all times the popular choice. The second race fell to the locally owned Randel, a frequent starter this year. He displayed a game effort this afternoon and fought it out hard with Moorfield and Ram-kin during the last sixteenth. Randel was not regarded with much favor and his supporters were well rewarded as a result Moorfield began in this race as if he would make a runaway of it. but he tired in the stretch only to come again near the end. The notional Ramkin loomed promisingly when he came around the others with a good (Continued on eighth page. CHURCHILL DOWNS NOTES LOUISVILLE, Ky., Nov. 8. Col. Matt J. Winn will depart Sunday for his home in Covington but will be on hand for the Lexington opening. S. N. Holman departed tonight for New Orleans, preceding his two cars of horses that he will race at Jefferson Park and the Fair Grounds. Jockey H. Stutts returned Saturday morning from Pimlico and had several mounts during the afternoon. Kentucky Cardinal, which he had been engaged to ride in the Pimlico Futurity, did not start. Charles F. Price, assistant manager and steward of the Kentucky Jockey Club, will not go to Lexington. He will remain at his home in this city until after Christmas when he will leave for Naples, Florida, on his annual winter vacation. Clyde Van Dusen shipped his string to Lexington Saturday morning. Will Perkins will ship his stable to the same track Sunday. At the end of the Lexington meeting Perkins will transfer his stable to New Orleans and included in the list of horses he will take will be J. IT. Knight's good two-year-old filly. Little Visitor. Cuban Track Renovated: All Buildings Painted, New Fences Erected and Track Proper Resurfaced CUBAN TRACK RENOVATED All Buildings Painted, New Fences Erected and Track Proper Resurfaced. BALTIMORE, Md., Nov. 8. Frank J. Bruen, general manager of the Cuba-America Jockey Club, was an arrival at Pimlico today. He stopped off on his way north from Havana to take in an afternoon's spout at Pimlico. Mr. Bruen is very enthusiastic over the outlook for the coming meeting at Oriental Park, which is scheduled to begin November 29 and continue for 100 or more days. "The entire plant has been renovated," said Mr. Bruen. "Every building on the place has been repainted, the roof garden of the clubhouse enclosed in glass, new fences built on the entire property and the track proper resurfaced with a coating of sand, pronounced by horsemen to be of a quality which compares favorably with any in this country. Oriental Park never looked prettier than it does now and the landscape gardeners have been busy, now that the rainy season is over, beautifying the grounds. I feel confident that visitors to Oriental Park this winter will say that we have the finest plant that they have ever seen. We have on the grounds at present 250 horses. During the next week there will arrive 125 from Kentucky, 150 from Columbus and about 100 from the Maryland and New York tracks." Mr. Bruen left for New York tonight, where he will remain for a week before returning to Havana. Master Charlie Retired MASTER CHARLIE RETIRED BALTIMORE, Md., Nov. 8. Wm. Daniel's Master Charlie, probably the best juvenile of 1924, has been retired for the year. After the running of the Pimlico Serial Weight-for-Age Race No. 2, he pulled up lame and Andy Blakely said he would put him away until next year. He will be wintered at New Orleans with the others in the stable. All year Master Charlie has been bothered from time to time with a splint and it is this affliction that causes him to bear out on the turns. Lexington Road Now Open LEXINGTON ROAD NOW OPEN LOUISVILLE, Ky., Nov. 8. The racing enthusiasts here were pleased with the announcement that the highway between Louisville and Lexington, which has undergone repairs for many months, has been completed and is now open to travel. This will insure a wholesome daily patronage from here at the Lexington track by those who usually motor there and return home after the races. Columbus Meeting Ends: Dust Flower Accounts for Au Revoir Handicap, the Closing Day Attraction COLUMBUS MEETING ENDS Dust Flower Accounts for Au Revoir Handicap, the Closing Day Attraction. COLUMBUS, Ohio, Nov. 8. C. H. Bern-hardt's Dust Flower, heretofore considered a sprinter, dispelled any doubt about her ability to go a long route at Beulah Park this afternoon. Taking command at once, the daughter of Peter Quince showed the way by a comfortable margin throughout the running of the Au Revoir Handicap, fifth and feature race of the concluding day of the meeting. Hermidale was always best of the others and Asaph outgamed Barbara Palmer for third place. A cold, raw wind swept the course today, making winter wraps a necessity for comfort. Despite the unpleasant weather, an excellent crowd was in attendance. The sport, which was inaugurated only a year ago at this course, has become decidedly popular. Buddie Brown, Kendall and Double Shot were returned handy winners in their respective races. Naughty Nisba came from behind in the stretch to annex the fourth race, which she accomplished handily. Asa Jewell repeated the feat in the sixth race. Arthur Elrod, who has had charge of the mutuel plant, departs for New Orleans, where he will operate his van service and sales business during the winter. J. McNaught today sold Expressive at private sale to C. Hauser. L. Erb "purchased Mad Nell at public auction before the racing today for $600. W. M. Cain claimed Malthus out of the fourth race for $2,400. Judge John T. Ireland leaves for Lexington, Ky., and will later go to New Orleans to serve as steward. W. R. Norvell leaves for his home in California. W. R. Booker and H. D. Monroe depart for New Orleans. Starter Marshall Cassidy and his crew go from here to Tijuana. Propaganda pulled up very lame after his race today. Being unable to secure stalls at Bowie, T. Whiteside and other Toronto horsemen will ship back to Woodbine Park for the winter. Move over to Lexington MOVE OVER TO LEXINGTON LOUISVILLE, Ky., Nov. S. With the close of the Churchill Downs meeting today the scene will shift to Lexington, where a meeting of eleven days' duration will be inaugurated Tuesday. Already quite a number of racing establishments hav.e been transferred to the new scene of activity, but the exodus from Churchill Downs will not get into full swing until Sunday morning when two special horse trains will take their departure. Monday will witness additional shipments, and it is expected all of the horses intended for participation in the Lexington meeting will be on the ground by Tuesday morning. Dr. O'mara Injures Leg DR. O'MARA INJURES LEG BALTIMORE, Md.. Nov. S. J. J. Farrell, Jr., will winter his horses this year for the first time in eleven years. Dr. O'Mara, the star of his string, became cast in his stall a few days ago and injured his left hind leg. Page 2 DAILY RACING FORM VOLUME XXX. Here and There on the Turf: Stimulus at the Top by Hisself Disappoints Earl Sande Out of Hospital . Here and There on the Turf Stimulus at the Top. By Hisself Disappoints. Earl Sande Out of Hospital. A. G. Weston's Appointment. Marshall Field's Stimulus, the swift-running son of Ultimus and Hurakan, need go little farther to establish his right to the two-year- eld crown. His victory in the Pimlico Fu- turity Friday answered th3 question of his being able to maintain his speed for a mile. He had shown his ability to stay up to three- quarters, but when he raced for the big prize that added just 49,750 to his winnings he proved that he could maintain that speed for a mile among the best of them. Since the running of the Futurity at Belmont Park, in which he was beaten a head by Mother Goose, Stimulus has only tasted defeat once. That was at Laurel. And since that Futurity Stimulus has been the winner of seven races. He was unbeatable at Empire City; he was twice winner at Aqueduct and once at Jamaica and his crowning achieve- inent was his victory at Pimlico Friday. A colt of excellent proportions, he is blessed with good action and it has been demonstrated that he may be placed success- fully, though in many of his races his forte seemed -to be speed. While Candy Kid was making the pace at Pimlico, Stimulus was rac- ing back of him in a fashion that suggested an ability to go to the Whitney colt at the first asking. Then when he was asked he responded like a good colt. But that was not all. After he had raced the pacemaker into defeat it was not over. He still had to withstand a challenge from a good one when William Ziegler, Jr.'s, Star Lore made his gallant rush in the last eighth. There was no time to give Stimulus a long breath and Thurber had to drive him out to make the victory certain. Stimulus answered that call and it was right there that he proved himself of championship calibre. Of the twelve that raced in the Pimilco Futurity, there were seven that had raced over the mile distance before and Stimulus was not one of them. Star Lore had won the Junior Championship Stakes at Aqueduct. Pas Seul had finished a good second to Master Charlie in the running of the Kentucky Jockey Club mile at Churchill Downs. American Flag had won the Manor Handicap at Laurel while Single Foot had finished a good second in that race. By Hisself had won a mib stake race at Empire City in which he had thoroughly beaten Star Lore. Candy Kid had won at a mile at Laurel and Young Martin had also raced over the mile distance. Thus, besides Stimulus, those in the field of the Pimlico Futurity that had never before raced over a mile route were Sunny Man, Blue Warbler and Courageous. There remains the Walden Handicap, where it is hoped Master Charlie and Stimulus will be brought together and it is calculated to determine the supremacy between the pair. The Walden is under handicap conditions and there are many of those beaten in the Pimlico Futurity will go after that race at a weight advantage not enjoyed Friday. Then there are those who do not consider the Pimlico Futurity as exactly a truly run race. This may apply to By Hisself. There is no denying that his race was far away from the form that was his at the Empire City . meeting. There he gave Star Lore a sound beating, while, on Friday, Star Lore was only beaten a nose by Mr. Field's colt. This will naturally make the Walden Handicap an attractive . engagement for the son of Man o' War. And there were others that did not show to full advantage Friday. But that is inevitable and, for the time being, as least, Stimulus is at the top of the heap. And Stimulus has the bar sinister that bars him from registration in the . English stud book. It is glad news to know that Earl Sande is 3 out of the hospital even though he is walking ; with the aid of a cane. Sande has spent the ; best part of the racing season nursing a broken i leg. He has been unable to even see the glorious races of the year, much less take part t in them. He has only seen Epinard in action i 3 3 4 4 5 5 G 7 j 1 2 3 4 4 5 6 7 1 2 p I 3 4 4 5 6 ' 7 : ' 1 , : ; , . . . 3 ; ; i t i on the silver screen and but for his unfortunate accident at Saratoga he surely would have been riding one of the American thoroughbreds that started against the French invader. The appointment of A. G. Weston as one of the stewards of the present Pimlico meeting is a wise move on the part of the Maryland Jockey Club and one that is tremendously popular with the horsemen. It would be well if there was a practical horseman in every stewards' stand to sit in judgment on the running of races. Mr. Weston is particularly fitted for his high office in that he is a practical horseman of long experience. There are others just as well I qualified as Mr. Weston, but the wisdom of ' : the appointment lies in the fact that he is ; practical through his long association with the i turf as a trainer. If there is any office in the government of the running of races that calls for practical 1 knowledge more than another, it is in the , stewards' stand. Many a sportsman who has 3 a knowledge of racing and its rules is lacking ' r in that practical knowledge that can only be attained by years of experience in the handling , of horses and the development of jockeys. The 2 training of horses will -give a better idea of 1 t how to administer the rules when it comes to , sitting in judgment. The practical horseman 1 . is better equipped to distinguish between right t and wrong in the running of the horses. He a u has a knowledge of the horses themselves that t makes him the ideal official when it comes to , seeing to it that the horses race honestly. It is not meant by this that racing is - thing but honest. The cries of jobbery ninety P times out of a hundred are unfounded and 4 come from those who are ignorant of racing, but at the same time this practical horseman is the man who can silence these scandal mon-. - . gers. He knows, or should know, enough about the actual running of horses to see to it that t the sport is above reproach. For a long time there has been much said j Q and written in favor of the employment of if paid stewards on the New York tracks. This employment of practical horsemen is : s directly along those lines. Paid officials 5 would have to be chosen for their peculiar fit-: ness for the office and no better selection could A be made than of men who have long years of f experience such as that enjoyed by Mr. Weston.
