' «. The Begum II. Shows Speed in Running One Mile in 1:42% — Mickey D. Gallops Half Mile. » LEXINGTON. Ky.. April 1L— Lucky Hit 1 and Charlie Berate, Dorby hopefuls of J. C. ' Milam, and S. H. Velie's gray filly The Be- J guru II.. one of the outstanding western Oaks . candidates, figured in some of the most note- j worthy gallops of the spring here at the Ken- , tucky Association track this morning. The i former pair expended little real effort in ; breezing three-quarters in 1:15'^, and the -Irish-bred filly fairly astonished by negotiating a mile la 1 :42%. handily. Still, additional impressive work was witnessed over the fast track, but the showings of the mentioned trio were so well received by horsemen that they took rank as not only the best gallops of the morning, but of the entire current siege of training. Both Lucky Hit and Charlie Bergin ] drilled under considerable weight and were practically pulled up when they finished the three-quarters. Working together, they sped over the opening quarter in :23% and. after completing a half-mile in :4~ %, rattled off an eighth in :\'2% to complete five-eighths in 1 lOl^i. That much accomplished under .steady restraint, they were taken up gradually during the following eighth, which they turned in :13%. Coming out of the trial in unusually fresh condition they convinced the large gallery of onlookers that the drill was nothing like a task for them and that they could have worked in much faster time had owner-trainer Milam elected. SOX OF JOHN P. GRIER. Lucky Hit is the brown son of John P. Grior — Cold Mine which Milam purchased out of the Hamilton Farm dispersal sale for $8,000. He saw but little racin with top company last year and, up to this time, has ' showed himself to be one of the bargains of the sale. Charlie Bergin raced effectively with some I of the leading western juveniles last year He is an imsexed son of Light Brigade — The Baroness. John HaseltOU had decided upon i a mile in about 1 :4o for The Begum II.. but I the daughter of Prince Phillip — Winnow | responded so vigorously that her speed under i snug holding slightly exceeded the desire ot • her trainer. She completed the first quarter in :24. half mile in 'AS3- and three-quarters la 1 rlo'-h. It was a corking good trial and If she continues to train as she has up to ' this time she is expected to prevail as one I of the choices for the Ashland Oaks renewal ' here on April 25. She was imported to this country from Ireland by Mr. Yelie, along with her sire and several other horses last winter a year ago. The Joliet Stable's nonimpressivc Bumpel-stilskin. eligible ior the Derby, was fairly well extended, doing a mile in l:4t)fc, and others among the less prominent Derby entries were seen in slow gallops during the morning. C N. Jones' Prince Bubo was breezed three-eighths in 'M% in preparation for a more ambitious gallop tomorrow. J VKK EAGLE t VNTEIIS. B. S. Clark's maiden Dark Kagle was galloped slightly more than a mile and trainer Jack Baker announced that he expects to work the horse tomorrow. Mickey D. breezed a half mile in :." o. C. W. Beidinger's? Derby eligible Dray-mont, which only recently recovered from a upell of sickness, is now able to take light exercise on tin track. Beidinger will not 'attempt to get him into racing c -ndition before mid-summer at the earliest. Jockey Karl Pool advise Jack Baker that he will report here Friday, to remain with the Baker stable for the balance of the year. L. M. Newgass and J. Lowenstein, after inspecting the two-year-old President Ed Kelly, owned by I. Weil, have taken an option on the youngster. He is a son of Upset — Chestnut Belle. J. C. Milam, who lias one of the largest stables here, expects to augment it in a few days when he will bring a number of two-year-olds in from the farm. Ontario Club Generous ONTARIO CLUB GENEROUS BOWIi:. Mil, April 11— Joseph McLennan received the entry blanks for the stakes to be run at Woodbine Park and Churchill Downs and distributed them among the horsemen at Bowie this afternoon. The On- . tario Jockey Club, in their us ial libera] manner, have added generous purses to all of the events to be run at Woodbine Park this spring. Added money to the stakes ranges , in value from $5,000 to $15,000, and the overnight purees will be $2,000, $1,500 and $1,200. Entrance money in all cases goes to the • winner. In all races for horses foaled in s Canada 5 per cent of the first money will be I paid to the Canadian breeder. Hertz of Chicago Provides the Favorite ♦ The fair sex is strongly represented among the owuers who have nominations for this year's Kentucky Derby. In fact, a greater number of women owners have entries in the famous race this year than ever before. While this in itself is not surprising, considering the large number of the fair sex who have become interested in the sport in the last few years, there is a rather singular coincidence that the name of the best known and most successful of women owners is missing from the list. Reference is made to Mrs. Payne Whitney, who races under the uom de course of the Greentree Stable. The remarkable achievements of this establishment are well known to the racing public. Only one, Harry Payne Whitney's Begret, which scored thirteen years ago, has won the Derby. In the absence of Mrs. Payne Whitney the most prominent of the women nominators to the Derby is undoubtedly Mrs. G. F. Van-derbilt, whose colors are carried by the Fair Stable. Mrs. Vanderbilt is known wherever horses are raced as the owner of Sarazen, the best two-year-old of 1923, and the conqueror of Kpinard in the Kentucky Jockey Club's "50.000 International Special of one mile and a quarter at Latonia in 1924. Sarazen is one of the largest money winners on the American turf, with $224,730 to his credit, only Zev, Exterminator and Man o' War surpassing him in money earned. The Fair Stable's entries for this year's Derby are Oh Say, War Flier and Peter Simple. However, the honor of furnishing the Derby favorite belongs to a Chicago woman. Mrs. John D. Hertz, whose Beigh Count has occupied that exalted position ever since the entries were announced. Judging by the training reports emanating from Churchill Downs, Beigh Count justifies the confidence reposed in him and will continue to hold sway as the reigning choice for America's most coveted race. He has given first call on jockey Arnold to the Greentree Stable for 1928. Young Phillips comes from a family of horsemen, all of whom have met with much success in their profession. At the conclusion of the Bowie meeting Phillips will ship his stable from here to Jamaica. Petee-Wrack Impresses PETEE-WRACK IMPRESSES NEW YORK, X. Y.. April 11.— J. B. Petee-Wrack. which was retired to winter quarters a maiden, gives promise of developing into a horse that will cause considerable worry to other trainers v. ho have named candidates for the rich event:'. Petee-Wrack worked a mile yesterday morning over the main track at Belmont Parle. With his regular exercise boy in the saddle he was timed in 1:16 and was under restraint all the way. The big three-year-old was worked alone and ran the first quarter In 27 set onds. The pace for the next quarter was speeded up and he was timed for the half in 52';.-,. BOWIE, Md., April 11.— Bapid Transit, the unsexed son of Honeywood and Carico, which races for the Nevada Stock Farm Stable, was winner of the first juvenile special of the Maryland season this afternoon, when he scored in the Bowie Kindergarten Stakes, over the half mile distance. The prize was worth $1,360 to the winner and George D. Widener's St. James filly Calm raced to second place, before William Garth's Wrap. The only other starters were B. D. Freeman's Aviatrix and Balzar, a stable-mate to the winner. Weather conditions were miserable for the sport when the day was raw and cold with a cold drizzle falling frequently during the afternoon. This had some effect on the attendance, but it was a fair weather crowd of other seasons at Bowie. Starter Milton got the field away at the first attempt in the Kindergarten Stakes and it was a good start, though Wrap was just a bit slow getting under way. There was little to choose among the other four and they were well lapped, with Bapid Transit racing along on the inside. When well under way Wrap was rushed up on the outside until she was alongside of Calm, while Bapid Transit held his inside berth. The three were well lapped racing for home, but shortly thereafter both fillies went out a bit and Bapid Transit came on, to win with something to spare, while Calm beat Wrap for second place. C'LAIVfj ion.. After the finish. Moon, who rode Calm, lodged a claim of foul against Peternel, who rode Bapid Transit, charging that he had grabbed his knee on the stretch turn and had impeded Calm. This claim of foul was not allowed by the stewards and the order of the finish was not disturbed. It was a cheap band of platers that started in the opening six and one-half furlongs dash, and J. P. McGovern's Goulash proved best when he was winner from B. L. Freeman's High Hope, while P. T. Chinn's Igor saved third from William Garth'- Hooney. High Hope was th- one to set the pace, but she was never ablt to draw away and Ambrose, timing his move nicely with Goulash, got his mount up to win by a head in the final strides. Igor had raced prominently all the way and was at the tail of the filly, while Booney, after meeting with some early interference, closed a big gap to land in fourth place. There was another cheap band started +k the seven-eighths second race, and Ominous, from the stable of M. J. Barrons, led them home, with Sam Douis' Blaze racing to second place and J. J. Conners' Casting saving third from Al Kripp. There was a slight delay at the post when Al Kripp had to be returned to the paddock to have a broken tack replaced, but the start was a good one. Bluemo t and Carol were the ones to show the way in the early stages, while Ominous was in rather close quarters and unable to stride freely. Casting was also just a bit slow to be under way, and he, too, met with some interference. WORKS WYY UP. Ominous worked his way through gradually and in the stretch finished fast to win going away. Blaze also hung on well. Casting had rather a rough trip to be along in time to save third. A good band of three-year-olds started in the three-quarters fourth race, which resulted in a good contest, with Jefferson Livingston's Burning Glass winner trom W. Sey burn's General Bollard, while B. I,. Freeman's Charles II., showing improved form, saved third place from Manchu. It was a fast run race, for. while a drizzle was falling all through the running, the time was 1:12%. General Billiard was the one to rush into a good lead, but he was soon joined by both Charles H. and Burning Class, with the last named running alor on the inside. Manchu was farther back and doing his best. General Bollard swung into the stretch still showing the way, but Fields had saved something with Burning G'ass and, in the last eighth, came through, to win going away by a length and a half. General Billiard held see nd place, while Charles H. readily lasted to beat Manchu. There was a surprise in the running of the mile and a sixteenth White Marsh Handicap when Harry Payne Whitney's Afterglow, which had been beaten in two other starts at the meeting, led home Fly Hawk, with Walter J. Salmon's Black Friar and II. G. Bedwcll's I.a Morte following them home. Afterglow and Golden Spire, coming back to the races after a long absence, were the ones to set the pace, and they were joined by Clack Friar on the turn out of the back (Continued on eigutn page.) FIRST START WINNER (Continued from first papre.) stretch. Ply Hawk was under restraint back of the leaders and it appeared that he could go to the front at the first asking. Before the tretch was reached Colden Spire was all through and dropped L..\ck, and still Mollis had Fly Hawk under restraint. Then, later, Morris called on Fly Hawk, but Afterglow, saving ground in the stretch, did not stop as he had in his other races and he was home winner. Black Friar tired at the c-nd but saved third place. The ride of Morris seemed to have much to do with the defeat of Fly Hawk, for he appeared to be easily besW Page 2 DAILY RACING FORM VOLUME XXXIV. Prospects at Jamaica. New Stand at Laurel t « Here and There ' on the Turf Three -Year-Old Chances. Many Alluring Values. Prospects at Jamaica. New Stand at Laurel. ^ ^ Verily this is a time of plenty for the American three-year-olds. Beginning early in May there will come races of a value never heard of hefore and a champion that would be able to meet all his engagements could pile up an unheard of winning record before the end of June. The first of these great opportunities for the three-year-olds is in the Preak-ness Stakes, of the Maryland Jockey Club, at Pimlico, and it is followed by the Kentucky Derby of the Churchill Downs Jockey Club, at the Louisville racing ground. These are races with 150,000 added each. Then there comes the wonderful opportunities offered by the Westchester Racing Association at Belmont Park, with its Belmont Stakes, of an estimated value of $80,000, and the $25,000 Withers Stakes. There is the Fairmount Derby at Collinsville, near St. Louis, with its added money of $25,000, and the American Derby at Arlington Heights, near Chicago, is of similar value. Later comes the Latonia Derby, also with $25,000 added, and there arc other chances, but these are the high lights. And it is fitting that the Preakness Stakes should be at a mile and three-sixteenths, and the Kentucky Derby at a mile and a quarter. The date of the running of these great races in May is 1 bo early that such a route is as far as 1 a three-year-old should be asked to run I and it is just as adequate a test as a 1 mile and a half later in the year. The ' Belmont Stakes has been made a mile ' and a half this year, and it is a worthy change in distance, bringing it to the ' real Derby distance, though as a matter of fact both the distance and the name are English, and have no particular bearing on the racing in this country. In arranging the running dates for these races, as far as has been possible, ' conflict has been avoided until it would be possible for a three-year-old to lake ; each one of the engagemeuts. This 5 would mean campaigning for more than 1 $250,000 merely in the added sums that are mentioned. There is always a chance • that another Man o' War may como along ' and there is always a chance that he will be ready for the earliest of these races, ' and still at the top of the class when the ■ last one of them is run. These are reasons for the yearling ' market and they are incentives to breeding that have a tremendous value in the industry of thoroughbred production. While the Metropolitan Jockey Club 1 has declared against the new Widener r scratch regulation, there is one good rule i that will be observed. That rule prohibits the entering of the same horse in 1 two overnight races on the same day. That was a practice that was a real 1 j [ j I i ! j 1 1 I 1 ' ' ' ' ; 5 1 • ' ' ■ ' nuisance in New York for a long time, and it is well that it has been stopped, for various reasons. The nominations made to the various Jamaica stakes promise that the racing will be up to the best traditions of the course. There are fifty-eight in the eligible list for the Paumonok Handicap, the opening day feature, and it would be hard to find a better lot of sprintors for this three-quarters test. Samuel C. Hildreth has saddled the winner for the Rancocas Stable in three of its runnings, .and he promises to make another strong bid on April 23, the opening day this year. The Hildreth nominations are Sweepster, Mowlee, Nassak, Black Curl, Jumbo and Ariel, surely a remarkable band of sprinters. From that strong band there j j ! is sure to come one and probably two j starters. Then there is Happy Argo that j j Max Hirsch trained so skillfully for I j j Bernard Baruch's Kershaw Stable last i year, while he also has Mrs. Herbert I | • Pulitzer's imported Foundation Stone as j i another eligible. i | Mrs. Vanderbilt is represented by Oh I i Say and Byrd, a pair that she purchased j j from H. P. Whitney. Mr. Whitney him-j ■ j self has no fewer than seven that have I I been named by James Rowe. These are , j The Tartar, Groucher, Bye and Bye, j ! j Honker, Pollywog, Twitter and Victorian, 1 I all three-year-olds. Other good ones found in the list are Ramoneur, Nusakan, Leonard B., Sar-maticus, Old Dutch, Son of John, Ingrid, j I Finite, Gerard, Distraction and Nixie, as well as a number of others of real sprinting speed. Then in the Wood Memorial, the mile! ' ! and seventy yards dash for three-year- • j ! olds, to which $10,000 is added, there ' I j can be found the names of most of the I i j I good ones that are named for the stake ' races of the year. Other high spots for ' : the Jamaica^meeting, that promise ex-1 I ceedingly well from the nominations that have been made, are the Long Beach, ' Kings County, Excelsior and Southampton ■ Handicaps, while of course the stakes I for two-year-olds, and there are several ' of them, have all filled exceedingly well. James F. O'Hara set some pace for the Maryland turf when the new stands, club • house and paddock were constructed for Bowie, and it spurred the other associations to improvements, but the really big change will be found at Laurel in the ; fall. The Maryland State Fair Association is building an entirely new stand, and it promises to be another model in i size, comfort and convenience. While the Laurel meeting is not to come until next October, enough work has been done at this time to assure that all will be in readiness long before that i time. With all spring and summer, as well as much of the fall in which to do the work, there will be no excuse for anything but a complete job, and that is ' what is intended. When H. D. Brown built that Laurel I course, he built well, and at the time the I stand was commodious for a racing \ crowd, but the racing crowds in Maryland - have grown beyond all expectations 5 and beyond the requirements of the early . days of Laurel. That was what made the ' building of a new stand imperative, just '■ as it was imperative at Bowie, and this time Laurel will build for the future. ' Pimlico and Havre de Grace have also ) found that expansion from time to time - has been necessary to keep up with the I public demand. This year will see the first of the progeny of Zev at the races, and their progress . will be watched with a great deal | of interest. In the naming of these two-year-olds, - the young sire is honored by having them begin with the first letter r of his name. There is a Zest, a black f son of Humbug; Zevelyn, a black daughter of Banda; Zalamea, a brown j daughter of Madura and Zevana, a bay daughter of the useful mare Adana. Zev has stamped most of his sons and j daughters in a fashion that would tell 1 of his potency, and while the fillies predominate, there are hopes that his first « year in racing will prove an excellent t one. ' I j I i j I ' ' : I ' ■ I ' • ; It is only an ordinary card that is offered s at the Bowie course today, with the Mount Royal Purse, an allowance affair, over the t mile and seventy yards distance, serving as 1 the feature. A fairly good field is to match strides here, with such as Crossco, Willie K., ] Bucky Harris and Comet among those entered. The next best field is to hook up in ; the third offering, a six and a half furlongs sprint. " i Claiming races are to the fore in five of : the seven numbers. With the exception of ] the feature attraction, the only race not i having the claiming clause attached is the i opening dash, framed for maiden two-year- • old fillies. SrORT— HIGHLAND FLING— BLANDRIS. There is really little to choose from among the maiden juvenile fillies, which are to ' make the issue in the initial dash. SPORT. I from the Greentree Stable, has a couple of I good races to her credit, however, and is I given the preference. Her first start here was a fair effort, but her last time out she 1 ran a poor race. The company may have i been a bit too much for her. HIGHLAND FLING has shown better than any of the ' otheis, and may be good enough to land the i place money today. BLANDRIS is tabbed for third, for want of something better. POLAR SEA— APPLE PIE— ASTER. The second race appears to be a good spot for the W. J. Salmon racer POLAR SEA to register a win. He is the class of this field and only has to turn in his usual good ef- ; fort to be the one to beat this band to the wire. This will be the first start for the Polymelian gelding at this track, but his workouts indicate that he is ready for a win- ning trip the first time out. APPLE PIE has one winning race to her credit over this track, she being a winner here last fall, and i a race to her best style today should be good enough for some part of the coin in this com- , pany. ASTER is capable of landing among the first three if he races in his best manner. DIGNUS— BUCKY HARRIS— EUCLID. With considerable weight off today, DIGNUS should go well enough to register a win. She raced well last time out to lose a close decision to Sunsard and Lady Marie and, with her favorable impost today, we expect her to race in much better style. BUCKY HARRIS looms as the one to beat, but he is to pack 117 pounds and that may tend to prevent him from winning. He raced well in the Inaugural Handicap and is bound to prove troublesome today. EUCLID should have benefited from his only start here and may be the one to account for the show part of the purse. WILLIE K.— CROSSCO— COMET. The manner in which WILLIE K. won his last race makes him appear to be the best betting proposition on the card in the fourth race. He appeared to have found his best s t 1 ] ; i : ] i i • ' I I I 1 i ' i ; i , speed again and, when fit, is no easy horse to beat. He is to carry a favorable impost today, and we can see no good reason why he shouldn't add this purse to his credit. CROSSCO was a mighty useful filly while racing over the New Orleans tracks, and she rates as the most probable contender in this field. COMET gave WILLIE K. somewhat of an argument in their last meeting, and if he elects to race in the same style here should get the show portion of the purse at least. BUCKY HARRIS is entered in this race also, but we do not concede him much of a chance as he is best suited to the sprinting distances. LUCIE ANN— FIRE FAIR Y— TROJIS. The J. E. Beall filly LUCIE ANN turned in a surprise win in her last start and, if that showing was no fluke, she should be good enough to make it two in a row. She is to carry the same weight as she did in her winning essay last time out and is meeting practically the same grade of performers. FIRE FAIRY was also winner of her last start, but she did not have such an easy time of winning and did not race in such fast time as did LUCIE ANN. She may be the contender today. TROJIS only has to race back to her last effort to land some part of the coin. MOROCCO holds an outside chance of upsetting the calculations. COMMISSIONER CAHILL— HIGHLAND CHIEF— ROWLAND'S REQUEST. COMMISSIONER CAHILL looks like a good betting proposition in the sixth number, over the mile and a sixteenth distance. While he has yet to win a race at this meeting, his three starts to date have all been fairly good ones and, with weight off today, we look for him to prove best. HIGHLAND CHIEF may be the one to furnish the most oppesition, basing on his winning effort his first time out here. He is asked to traverse a longer distance tcday, however, and we doubt if he can carry his impost over the added distance to a successful conclusion. ROWLAND'S REQUEST won in easy fashion his last time out, but he is picking up seven pounds over that start and we believe that it will tend to bring him back to the others. ROBERT MANDEL— EVERGLADE— FAST MAIL. The final race on the program seems to be a good spot for ROBERT MANDEL. to' land in front of his opponent. He has been turning in some fast trials and, with but 105 pounds in the saddle today, we look for him to give a good account of himself. EVERGLADE put up a good effort his last starC and may prove a strong contender for the major portion of the purse if he elects to race in the same manner today. FAST, MAIL will be making his first start of the year in this event but, if he races back to j his morning trials, should make his presence i • felt. Daily Racing Form Handicaps i i ' I I \ - 5 . Dr. J. H. Spicer, of Media. Ohio, who held a contract on the boy, cancelled the agreement some eighteen months ago. and the lad was a free lance. J. A. Guciardo presented a paper to the Maryland racing stewards signed by J. Guciardo and witnessed by Sidney Bender, which was supposed to be a transfer of a contract to Guciardo Bros, from Dr. Spicer. It is proved that no transfer had ever been made, consequently jockey Grassia was never under contract to anyone since the termination of his agreement with Dr. Spicer, and consequently wa_- not entitled to the five-pound allowance. Grassia in the meantime lias ridden 116 winners. Fred Jr. Ferris Star FRED JR. FERRIS STAR LOUISVILLE. Ky.. April 11.— The stable that J. C. Ferris brought from the South is a most useful one and. as all of the horses are in good training condition, they ought to win at an early dale. The stable is headed by the four-year-old Clark Handicap candidate Fred Jr.. which went amiss while being prepared for last season's Kentucky Derby. The colt has fully recovered from the disability and is in rarely good condition. Others in the stable are Mayberry. Bloomfield, Zeta. Captain Haney and the two-year-olds Tommy Doyle, Martha Sue and Veronica Sterling. The horses came in charge of trainer Frank Stevens, who reporter that owner Ferris had gone to his home in Nashville, Tenn., for a brief visit. Display is to be a starter in the Dixie Handicap at Pimlico. He was timed a mile in 1 :46 on Tuesday. The first half mile was at a slow pace, but this was gradually improved as the big bay horse settled to his work. The first three-quarters was timed in 1 :20 and the final quarter mile in 26 seconds. The Palmdale Stable, which is owned jointly by A. J. Stallings and A. P. Lettrllier. both New Orleans sportsmen, embraced ten head, and secured quarters at I ouglas Park. The Southland Stable, owned jointly by Charles Bachrach and F. P. Lcttcllier. who are also residents of the Crescent City, included eighteen head which are now stabled at Churchill Downs. The latter stable came in charge of "Doc" Foucon. who announced that owner Lettellier was motoring up from the southern city. The Palmdale outfit arrived la charge of trainer William Buford. Trainer Foucon stated that all of the Southland Stable's horses shipped in good shape. The bones were well campaigned on the New Orleans tracks and are fit and ready to race. This stable is well fortified in its two-year-old division, which includes a number that raced successfully during the winter. Some of the youngsters are eligible to the Churchill Downs stakes for two-year-olds. My Hobby, a winner of two races ; Woolo-rac, Disturb and Great Artist have been nominated to the Bash ford Manor Stakes, while Omona and Neck and Neck are the Stable's -.ominees to the Debutante Stakes. John Oliver Keene came over from Lexington to inspect his big stable at Churchill Downs, in charge of Lieut. Bill Rust. He was accompanied by Frank Book, wealthy Detroit sportsman and one of the owners of the Book-Cadillac Hotel in that city. Mr. Book is keenly interested in thoroughbreds and, for his benefit, a number of the Keene two-year-olds were brought out and asked to give an exhibition of their speed. In all probability Mr. Book will shortly join the ranks of owners, as he indicated that he might purchase a few good horses to carry his colors this year. Mr. Keene was well satisfied with the advanced training of his horses and was especially pleased with the fine appearance of Champ de Mars, which has developed into the finest type of thoroughbred. The stable will send a number of its horses to Lexington to take part in the meeting at that point. I. E X I N G TO \ ATTRACTS. Quite a number of other owners have signified their intentions of sending some of their horses to Lexington. Trainer Jim Ever-man will send A. A. ' . . ' . , . . TORONTO CUP CLOSES MAY 2 Valuable Race of Ontario Jockey Club Expected to Attract Stars of Handicap Division. TORONTO. Ont.. April 11.— The Ontario Jockey Club calls the attention of horsemen to the closing on Wednesday, May 2, of several of the important stakes to be decided at the coming spring meeting. The foremost of most of these, from the standpoint of monetary value, at least, is the Toronto Cup ' Handicap, of $15,000 added, which will have ■ its thirty-sixth running on Thursday, May 21, Victoria Day. This race, r t a mile and an eighth, for three-year-olds and over, is expected to attract many of the leading handicap performers on the continent, as it has in seasons past. The King Edward Gold Cup Handicap, Woodstock Plate and Victoria Stakes, the 1 first of these for three-year-olds and over, the second for three-year-olds exclusively and the third for two-year-olds only, are open events, and to each is added a ?3.000 purse. The remaining race of these events, which are to have their closing on the above-mentioned date, is the William Hendrie Memorial [ Handicap, also of $5,000 added. Which is limited to three-year-olds and over foaled in Canada. W. J. Salmon's Display, which amassed the splendid total of C578,676 in his races of last season, was victor from the Carlton Stable's Ruskin, Senator P. F. Joyce's Harry Baker and several other leading handicap performers in the 1927 renewal of the Toronto Cup, and it is altogether likely that the brilliant son of Fair Play will again be found among those comprising the field for the 1928 running, as Mr. Salmon usually sends his horses to race in Canada. Weights for the Toronto Handicap will be announced on Tuesday, May 15, for the King Edward Gold Cup, Friday, May 18. and for the William Hendrie Memorial Handicap, Thursday, May 24. Each starter in the Woodstock Plate, the three-year-old race, will carry 12G pounds, while the juveniles starting in the Victoria Stakes will each be asked to take up 122 pounds. » , — Shields Confirms Rumor: States, However, That Penthorn Displayed No Signs of Lameness-May Use X-Ray ( i , t t . LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 11.— Milo Shields, trainer of the Penthorn Stable, arrived yesterday from his home in Falls City, Neb., where he had been visiting since the close of the Jefferson Park meeting. The horses in his charge arrived from the South about a fortnight ago, and are at Churchill Downs. Included in the list under the care of Shields is the three-year-old Penthorn, an eligible to the Kentucky Derby, which raced at Xew Orleans during the winter campaign. Rumors that had been afloat regarding Pen-thorns condition were denied by Mr. Shields, but he did admit that his colt had a slight ailment in his left front leg. caused when he struck himself in his last race at Jefferson Park. According to trainer Shields, the foot filled up somewhat, but the colt displayed no signs of lameness. The exact nature of :he injury cannot at present be determined, and it may be necessary to resort to the use of the X-ray. Trainer Shields asserted that Penthorn has had a saddle on every morning since reaching the local track, and the colt was galloped two miles the morning after his trainer reached here. It is also declared that the colt is right now fit and ready to race. Velie Inspects His Horses \ I ' 1 f I * ' 1 1 ' i I I • i 1 I i a I i VELIE INSPECTS HIS HORSES LEXIXGTOX. Ky., April 11— S. H. April 11.— *\Iack" Baker, the genial local horseman, again carries off honors for having the largest stable of thor oughbreds at the Kentucky Association track here. Somewhat contrary to last season, when a number of his horses were ill, all of the thirty-six in Baker's charge at this time are in training. They came through the winter in good bodily condition and, while there has been but little sickness among the horses here this year, Baker enhanced caances for his racers to retain good health through the building, last fall, of a modern stable. It is one of the finest and most complete structures of its kind to be found anywhere. Baker is training his big stable in sets of six horses each, and his labor is so extensive that he is among the first to arrive end last to leave the Association course every day. Thirty of the horses are owned by R. S. Clark, Xew York sportsman : three the property of A. B. Hancock ; two are held by R. A. Fairbairn. and the other by Baker. As in numbers; quality, breeding, looks and ability are much in evidence among the three dozen horses. Perhaps the star of the establishment is the Breeders' Futurity winner Wood Lore, but the stable is well fortified with good three-year-olds, chief of which are Dark Eagle, the son of Star Hawk which is being trained for the Kentucky Derby ; Wisdom and Son. The latter two are also capable. The other older horses are Dinner Dance, Sea Scamp, Longworth, Promotion, Constance, Concession, Union Central. High Sky, Lady Fanshawe, Kitty Cat.
