MOTTO TEXT Prepare your hearts unto the Lord and serve him onlyt Saw 73 1 And it came to pass that when Samuel was old that he made his judges over Israel Samuel lived to be ninety years old and died be fore Saul He had freed Israel from the yoke of the Philistines many years before and in everything he hadsh wn himself one of the great est men the human race hadever produced He had been a great ruler ruling in the fear of God But the duties of his office as judge had become too great for him There fore he appointed his sons as asso ciate judges and sent them to the south while he remained at Ramah Now the name of thefirst born was Joel andthe name of the sec oudwas Abiak they were judges in Bcersheba IIJoel means Jehovah is God It and Abiah Jehovah is my fathB these names Samuelemphasized his abhorenc- to idolotry and his devotion to God Beersheba which means well o the oath was so called because of tne covenant made there between Abraham and Abimelech ofwhich an account is given in Gen 21 It was on the southern border Abra ham Isaac and Jacob had lived there as Elijah didafterwards 1 And his sons walked not in Ins ways but turned aside unto lucre and took bribes andperverted judg meatTbey were not as vile as Elis sons and it seems from confi deuce of the people that Samuel would do right they knew he wa ignorant of his sons behavior Eli knew of his sons wickedness an did not restrain them Even the4 best of men have wicked sons W know nothing of their mother but i w r with his many public duties forgot his duty as a father and left his sons too much to the mother alone without making sure that she was as wise as his mother Hannah had been From all we 1 low oi Sam uels character we nay bs sure tha if he had not thought hi i sons make good judges learn God an r hating covetousness ae would not have appointed them II Theo all the elders oj Israel gathered themselves together art came unto Samuel unto Ramah Ramah was Samuels home It site is not known Moses chose seventy elders or heads of familie- to form a council There were elder- in authority in all the tribes an these came as representatives of the people They came to disclose to the aged prophet now seventy years old the vileness of his own sons But they knew from his wholeong life of integrity ati honor and fear of God that his judgment would not be warped wit parental partiality lithold thou art old and thsons walknot tn thy waysWhat con fidence they showed in the honor and unselfishness of their old ruler They Jell him to his face that he is infirm with age and his own sons whom he has appointed are unwor thy They judged him rightly Sam uel cared for God chiefly and then for the people No thought of his family cime into his consideration wVre the glory of God or the wel t fir of I reel were concerted amuejs sons were Gun pu thjudgesII 1 elder show that his was out tttu real reason of their coming Had it been they would have said IeI I him Let us ask God to give us an otherjudge such as thou hast been But they wished toconform to the world Now make us a kink tto judge utt like all the nations It Alns for the people of God when they ate desirous of imitating otheis- I i iiI Alas for the Baptists and other evangelical bodies when they run in the way of Cathohcjwith their I 1 I i YI Easter They had God for their king and Samuel for his represen tative and yet they imitated the sin of their fathers in the wilderness who Ipnged for the flesh pots of But the thing displeased Samu el when they said give us a king to nidge usFor Samuel loved God with all his heart and a desire to imitate the world was a direct af front to the Almighty The elders had many seeming reasons dehind their request but all of them based upon a lack of faith in God and Gods methods They wanted a centralized government There was little organization God estab lished but little for his people under both difpensations There was just then a strong league of Philistines against them and they wanted a strong central power As if God could not overcome all their foes with the jawbone oi an ass in the hand of one man if only they were obedient and trusted him Whenever Baptist churches have a large element of unregenerated among them they repeat this old plea of the Israeliets and wish for stronger organizations than their separate churches such as the other sects have around them In the first century God gave them their desire and out of Baptist churches came the hierarchy of Rome Hearken unto the voice of the foer they have tot rejected theet but they shoutfd reign over themIt is terrible thing to pray without askingif it be in accordance with thywill Sometimes God grants the requests of men in punishment He gives them the bitter experiences of their of n wills He allows his churches to imitate the world to ape the sects and the results are spiritual decay and dearth ofconversions The people would have denied that they were rejecting God men nev er put such things before their own Bust that was what they were doing hisdtory of the Baptists except in the lessones of this treatment of God and his oflrulesneeded than today According to all the works they have done since 1 brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day Sarruel need have the added grief hatd done rightly Israel would have not storydThey had rejected Moses as they were rejecting Samuel God needs to be infinite to have patience with hidm for his goodness Again and again worshippedsthe golden calf had they forsaken Agaisn punishmentsss red pentance 1 Howbeit yet protest solemnly un to them and shew then the manner of king that reign over them God would appeal to their sober thedm one more chance to repent of their rePsatehd his words to the them and showed them how a king would treat them Verily human nature is as foolish as it is depraved or they would have asked that God should still1 reign ever them aud give them as a judge another Samuel But they were resolved to have their own will The ways of their own neighbors were more attractive to them than Gods ways And their after historv is written in blood and tears a sty llnlDen God escolbt OnrtllTe18e6 This bcdy met
