because I had heard nothing of her Illness If Indeed there was any preceding Illness she seems simply to have died of old age She was the greatest woman of her day and her natural successor Is Josephine K Henry of Versailles Ky who naturally follows In the line of promotion among women as Wilson of CInclnnnatI follows In the line of promotion among men since Ingersoll Is deadIf Indeed such men and such women can bo said ever to die My experience with Mrs Stanton If she and were both Christians In stead of Infidels would make me now feel that Providence had for a few weeks back been specially preparing mo to write what am now writing Everything else in this issue of the Blade that is about her was of course written and was In type be fore had any intimation of her death but would not change a word of some years back I have felt some what hurt that Mrs Stanton did not seem even to know of me but If I ever did anything specially to induce her to recognize my paper and my work do not now recall it But through the instrumentality of Mrs Henry the Grand Old Woman lately wrote that she intended to be a frequent contributor to my pa per and from that time she had not failed to have something for each Is sue and I suppose that what you find from her pen In this Issue or the next Is probably the last thing that she vet sent to nrJlJlnr She sent It with the request that would comment on It and It Is now an Interesting prophecy that I said as you will see in the comment or in something else that I have said about her that her last writing would be for the Blade Though not In some sense to know Mrs Stanton was to proclaim your self unknown never saw her and never knew her career accurately un til finished reading her hook Eighty Years and More recently she having sent it to me about a month ago and two volumes of her Wo mans Bible with a beautiful dedica tion in each the dedications In the handwriting of her amanuensis but each signed by Mrs Stantons auto graph though Insuch a way to show that her vision was very poor sent In return my two books and In my dedication spoke of her as the great est living woman- have seen no evidence of and decrease of mental vigor In any o- very last articles Mrs Stantons mind was more mas culine than fbmlnlne more Herculean than Minervian While in all that make a paragon of domestic vir tues as wife mother and neighbor she was all that Caesars wife or the mother of the Graccl could have been yet as a thinker she was a great masculine jurist more like old Justice George Robertson of Lexing ton the greastest lawyer that Ken tacky ever produced than any other person ever know Intellectually she was more fitly represented In physics by Sandow than by the wonderful achievements of the Japanese acrobat Like Ursus In Quo Vadls she simply caught the bull of Christian superstition by the horns and broke Its neck by main strength- In all that she has said or written havo seen nothing at all like the wonderful thrilling womanly peer liarities that characterize the writ ings of Josephine K Henry and Har riot M Closz hope that both these women will be at our Lexington Congress on Jan nary 25 1903 and that parts or the whole of their addresses will bo memorial of Mrs Elizabeth Cady Stanton up to this time the greatest woman who has lived In the 20th Century OLD SISTER ELIZABETH CADY STANTON IS RIGHT IN IT used to say before Mrs Stanton began writing for this paper that tho Blue Grass Blade was the greatest newspaper on earth or in heaven for that matterand I spoke the Gods truth It was a very modest and mod erate remark Now since Mrs Stanton has begun to write for this paper with every reason to suppose she will live to bo 100 years old and her last writings bo In this paper this sheet as these oultlandcr jayhawkers call It Is worth lIewspaII10rs have been trying to got for tho Blade r4i becomes contemptible It ought not to gave one less than 1000000 Take Mrs Stanton as a combination of She was nearer be ing a Christian than an Infidel Her mother was treasurer of the W C T U In Philadelphia- In a letter she left for her mother sonic expressions are as follows Unless r either recant boldly affirm that whoever says the Holy Bible In any way approves of intoxicating liquors for boverave purposes is a liar and a blasphemer a liar because willfully saying what he knows Is false and a blasphemer for desecrating sacred tunings It certainly must be that Chris tian gentlemen like my esteemed friend Hon John D White who are associated with Zachary In the Pro hibition cause must know beyond any peradventuro that the Bible does sanction tho drinking of liquor as a beverage and cannot see why a gentleman of tho standing of lIon Mr White who has represented his Kentucky District In Congress and who Is now a Prohibitionist can con sent to allow a man like Zachary to represent tho Prohibition party by statements that Hon White knows beyond a peradvcnture to ho false Mr White centalnly knows without a shadow of a doubt or a moments hesitancy that the whole story of the alleged first miracle of Jesus John teaches that Jesus made wine at Cana of Galilee Of course Zachary or almost anybody else can repeat the stereotyp ed quibbles about It but tho lIon Mr White knows that they are qulb bles and would not In a communica tion to this paper say that tho story of Cana of Galilee does not teach that Jesus made wine to drink as a her erage at a wedding feast- am not complaining of Zachary and would not under any ordinary circumstances bandy words with manif It be lawful to call him manlike Zachary but I have a tight very seriously to complain of the Hon John White for letting- a man like Zachary who is represent ing him make Ignorantor worse statements like that without a pro test from a man of the high stand ing of Mr White I defer to no man now living In my opposition to tho liquor radio but am not willing to let my opposition bo defended either by ignorant or lying methods and ask Mr White with all tho deference that ono Intel ligent and honorable gentleman should show another to repudiate In a communication to this paper this statement of Zachary- It Is not only true that the Bible sanctions tho drinking of liquor but It represents that God positively commands the drinking of liquor for the purpose of getting what Is called beastly drunk though omenemn bracing women are the only beasts that willl get drunk and on tho other hand there Is not a pas sago in the whole Bible that says plainly that nobody ought not to get drunkA In which the Bible says that God positively commanded cer lain persons to get drunk exceedingly dunk sepultus in vino Is Jere miah xxv 272S and Is as follows Therefore shalt thou say unto them Thus salth the Lord of hosts the God of Israel Drink ye and be drunken 1 t f lNotesYV Why should not the Woman frage bo forced to the front With woman home Interests are paramount With men business Inter eats are paramount the vices of hu inanity are not always the foes of business but they are always the en emles of the home The vices are ten the allies of business but never the allies of the home Hence we can trust certainly an objection and I am sorry there never has been a Woman Shakespeare for several reas tins wero not aware that men Shakespcares crowded around the polls on election day So far In life never met a man Shakespeare or one that might be second cousin to tho Bard of Avon If It takes a Shakespeare to merit the ballot the voting booth will be tho lonsomest place on earth As yet there has been hut ono Man Shakespeare and It Is not dead sure but all the brains of the 17th Century contributed to make up this world renowned yet hazy character of Shakespeare If my friend can marshal a few voters with the ability of Him or Them on election day trot them out and the woman who wants the ballot will treat ami despair of ever meriting citizenship This is the strongest reason have ever heard given why woman should not have the ballot UNCLE JORDANS EXPERIENCE Will Allen Dromgoole thus records Uncle Jordans experience In Old Jordan fervent mntlcally arose and said ehurchI Brudderin en Comstock has deemed me guilty of a crime which I did not commit the circulation of obscene literature and has announced his intention of consigning me to prison for a long term My book has been favorably reveiwed by medical mag azines of standing and has been ape proved by physicians of reputation The Rev Dr Rainsford of this city In two letters to me partially approv ed the book so far as to say that if all young people were to read it a good deal of misery suffering and dis appointment could be avoided and that to have me arrested on account of it was ridiculous The book and Its companion pamphlet have been circulated with approval among So cial Purity women and members of the W C T U clergymen and physic ians Upon all sides they have evok ed commendation for purity spiritual uplifting and sound common sense In contrast with the mass of timony to their purity and useful ness Anthony Comstock a paid in former who is making his living out of entering complaints against im view of debauchment of their morals He has not however produced any young person who has been Injured through their perusal In addition he has de liberately lied He stated to Judge inomas secretly not while in court that I had even handed ono of these books tb the little daughter of the janitress of the building In which I have my office It so happens that there is no janitress nor is there any later that he had been much surprised He said he had warned Miss Craddock before her arrest that her boolts were In violation of the law About this time he added a prominent business man complained to me that his daughter a girl of and another girl of the same age had been accosted by the Craddocl woman at the entrance of his place of business She gave these girls copies of her books saw the moth ono charge kept her there for weary months until sho was released on parole then Indicted her on an other charge and was about to re turn her to prison for a long term of years when sho tool Judgment her own hands and with tho seren ity of Socrates ended her life This Is very sad to mesad not on ly from sympathy with tho misfor tunes of this woman but sad that not a ray of hope or prospect of defense shone in on her dark despair from organized Liberalism Had such a hope presented itself she would never have taken her life She was a woman who had made many sacrifices for that what seemed to her a principle She was brave She dar ed to face the mob She would have lived and suffered if back of her there had stood a firm phalanx of Lib eralism to defend the principle of free speech as Indicated in her case But she looked ahead and saw no hope in Comstocks vengeful glare she looked behind and saw no rush of friends and heard no cry of cheer So she went to her death And her death be was ever placed In tho hands of child clergymen themselve are ashamed of It and numcroti in stances have been recorded o late in which clergymen have adv cated its general overhauling and pi rgliu of its impurities In face of all this the senpe of nicety is so great in Anthony Com stock that ho must needs send to prison and eventually to her death a woman whose only offense has been the publication of a little book which is highly educative to any youth or marriageIwe directions to which reform leads In amazing tho human mind it Is something Nature It seems has constructed and adapted special Intellects for cry manner of needed reform Look about us and noto the variety Hero Is the Legislator tho Thcolo glan tho Moralist and the Educator each more or less Imaginary that all reform proceeds from his wpy of thinking These are each subdivided Into a hundred branches In the church there is the tlergy of high and low degree evang lIsts exhorters missionaries teacher nu merous branch societies and whatnot all directing their energies against some evil or some hobby or selfish purpose There are some people who think that every problem of government and society would be solved only alcohol were banished from the world Intemperance is an evil and nature has specially fitted some minds to fight this evil Likewise In the sphere of Socialism Womans Rights Eco nomlcs jurisdiction healing sex pefs sonal and political liberty find countless numbers of men and women arraying themselves under some particular banner of Reform to which work nature may or may not have adapted them- Reforms of management In a thous and different particulars are being pushed by enthusiasts- In all these reforms there Issome diversifiedinterestswholly acceptable The best in them will live the bad will perish It Incumbent upon all reformers then to be tolerant of each other Look at the many reforms now be ing promulgated by woman alone Look at the servant problems cook Ing reforms dress reforms and many other large and small matters which engage their minds demon strating tho fact that nature has di versified and so adapted the human mind to fit and specialize it for ery need and emergency Lately In Cincinnati a reform has been started among some very intel ligent ladies headed by Dr Clara Bruce a dress reform based upon econmlcs of the following character The society has adopted a certain plain style of dress the cost of the goods Is not to exceed 300 Hats gloves and other apparel are to cost in proportion I have seen tume and it Is really neat becoming 0l n far prettier often than some omen dressed in a 100 costume The prime object of this reform arises from the fact that the present coat of womans apparel is far beyond tho income of any man of ordinary salary that men are compelled to remain single and both sexes are thus deprived of sex privileges and the comforts of a home They argue that woman should dress in proportion to the average Income that a balance may be left for furni ture books and other comforts Besides they say the vanity of dress has become a mania and much mari tal uphapplness arises from its indulgence and men are kept out of lock on account of it Now any one can see that this at tempt at dress reform in reality Is one of sex reform leading to a more universally legatimato sex gratifica tion and indeed It has most worthy featuresI this and other examples just to show how bent is tho human mind that of woman Is well as men toward reform even in technical directions or In some form or other Miss Craddock well illustrates my point Her crime however really consists in this She was an Innova torshe stood alone sho was exceptional and consequently sho was a of a reform Is never considered in dealing with an innovator The individual who steps ahead of the mob will either be club bed or lassoed and jerked hack There can be no greater crime than to ad vance beyond ignorant custom Miss Craddock saw in the ignor ance of the young women led to the marriage altar the cause often of a lifetime of misery and conjugal un happiness ending either In years of sacrifice or In unfaithfulness divorce and suicide Sho learned as every physician well knows that the general Ignorance and unprcparcdness of both young women and men to enter upon such Impor tant duties their total lack of Judg ment in making selection their abso lute ignorance of sexlaw lacking oven the knowledge and refinement of the beast results often In great misery and much crime To her this general ignorance pre sented the necessity for a much need ed and valuable reform The necessity was just as apparent to her as the temperance and wo mans rights and dress reforms are to other women The facts are that sho took for her life work the very basis of all reform- I have read her books which Com stock has declared to bo lewd and lascivious and their publication to be criminal One Is called Tho Wedding Night and the other Right Marital Living They treat of the passions the approach of sexes tho re finements of the sex the modesty icnstlveness pain and shock of tho bride They narrate the evils which arise from ignorance and which lead to a life long misery and many other instructive lessons Every physician- can count these sufferers by the scores A long wall of woo is continually being poured into their ears Miss Craddock believed It a crime ASS BLADE for young people to enter the marital state uneducated nnlnstructcd and guided only by bestial Instinct She was right Her books arc not Just as would have written them but upon the whole they arc educa tlvo and refined and are filled with just sucH Instruction and preparation that every young woman and tuna should know When people seek to marry they are stiposcd to ho old enough to desire Information about sex as well as other responsibilities They are children no longer The real criminal In all these cases Is the father or mother who lows their sons and daughters to ter ignorantly upon such Important obligationsI that tlmo will come when the laws of sex and procre atlon will be introduced into tho com mon school curriculum I believe that in time men and wo men will conic to realize that the beginning of all reform should begin at the beginning at the conception of offspring It has always been so The her esy of one age becomes the gospel of the next in spite of inqulstlons and Comstock agencies Ida C Craddock feebly attempted just what a more Intelligent age will scientifically complete The time will come when the sex appetite will be stripped of the vul garlty with which piety and false modesty have clothed it and men and women will come to look upon it as Natures reward for all labor pain and sacrifice as tho basis of all love the cement of the union of the hearts tine hovered pathway of all life the delicate Instinct of re fined minds the sanctification of motherhood and home the gift di vine the Joy of perpetuation of spe cies the mystery of all mysteries ending In the sublime anti awful re sponsibility of ushering a new being Into existence endowed by transmis sion with unlimited capacities for either evil or good That time will come and when it does the namo of Ida C Craddock will be resurrected and become known as one of the pioneers of prog ress and pure maidens yet unborn will do her honor and sigh at her untimely fate I will not abuse Anthony Comstock He may honestly believe that he Is doing right Misguided men through out all time have tortured and burned in the name of religion and have been honest in their motives Nature has decreed that there shall bo per secutors and victims for persecution Nature has made a thousand persecutors for every reformer but she shalltriumphTherefore I shall leave Comstock with his own conscience will only say that were I him could not go stand by the bier of Ida C Craddock and gaze upon her white dead face and see the ruin hind wrought see tho pale cxprcsslvclcss countenance that once beamed with lovo and pity for suffering womanhood I say I could not look upon those mute lips and vacant eyes and not feel myself rlawanwnnln L3thrlontnpcl Miss Craddock believed in a God and a future existence If there be a brighter Fetter land where persecu tors dwell not here prisons do not open and swallow up those who would fain help the ignorant and the suffer ing and oppressed where all Is joy and peace and love hope she has gone thither and that tho change of scene the glory tho ecstacy to which sho Is transplanted the soft airs perfumed valleys the music of waters the many variegated landscapes gold and glitter of palaces the peace and love of radiant counte nances will make her forget and to tally annihilate from her memory all recollections of Anthony Comstoelt the police court and tho prison tombs of New York To her these were such a dread that she tool her own life Sho had only to look forward to long years of confinement In which she would he practically dead to world She preferred to end It till right now As she was single and had no family obligations she no doubt was right in her judgment Slid knew her own mind best and It Is not for oth ers to judge The mockingbird will grow used to his cage and sing oven the more sweetly In it The eagle frets Itself to death May it not bo a mercy then when there is naught in the palm of hope but ashes to relax the fingers and let the merciful winds that sweep in to the desert of despair gather up tho dusty freight and bear It to tho Great Potter who knows how frail and especially In the last of those years Nothing could over respecthintAnd I believe he has been a millstone about Mr Footes neck ever since he returned to London from Canada Our movement needs beyond If they do not voluntarily retire Had I remained In England should have told Mr Foote what know and thought about his friend but I hate to be meddlesome and be Ing so far away could do nothing matter without having the appear ance of meddling am glad the nection Is at an end and beg to congratulate Mr Foote thereupon The above is from the Liberator of September It takes it six weeks to get here Its editor is Josph Symcs Melbourne Australia When our relations with the Mar tlans is a little bettor established I hope lire Symes will move his newspaper plant to this planet so he wont be so far warm hells on earth The Uncouth Infidel would not have been exhumed but for the tal card received at this office Hagerstown Maryland last Friday card was dated October 1902 and reads as in tho hereby earnestly requested to attend the annual congress of the National Liberal Party In Lexington Kentucky Friday Saturday and Sun day January 23 24 25 1903 303 The emancipation of the human mind from the bondage of theological superstition has made wonderful prog ress since the days of the Immortal Bruno but In spite of the culture of modern times there Is still danger that the black flag of Theocracy may float In triumph over the cap Itol at Waslngton and enshroud the Republic of Paine and Jefferson In the darkness of the Middle Ages At the close of the 18th Century it r dawned upon the minds of these great thinkers that all men are creat ed equal and this priceless conception made the 19th Century the more marvelous and the happiest period In the history of the world Previous to this century of Amer ican Freedom the entire earth was filled with cruelty and barbarism and all mankind were under the galling yoke of kingly tyranny and priestly despotism The very few of the worlds inhabitants who could read and write had no Illumination but the light of a candle and the work of the world was done by the muscles of man and beast The human brain In this universal atmosphere of kingly and priestly slavery could know noth ing of the laws of Nature and the chemical and physical properties of matter nor of any of the processes of the world around them and war misery pestilence ignorance and famine were the common heritage of the human family This awful gloom that hung over the world like a funeral pall was dis pelled by the Palnes the Jeffersons the Frankllns and their comrades Their successful revolt against the kings priests tyrants of the earth gave to the world a hundred years KIND AND ENCOURAGING Harrison Okla Oct 1902 Editor Charles C Moore- I enclose my petition for Dr Ham mer on the blank cut from the Blade probably do not understand it as those who are nearer do but I do know enough of his case to know that in the treatment of him there has been something rotten In the stat of Denmark underhandedness has been and is being done by the opp sition or they would show their ors and not write letters in Moines to appear as if they had beer written In Newton After all you have done and ar offering to do they would consider nc effort too great to down you and that right quick if they could Many times in recent years since I have known of so many good and great and most noble souls being thrown into prisons and penitentiar ies I have wondered If It might yet get to be a thing to be desired that one might have proof of having done honorable service for mankind The Christians sing of the tomb Since Jesus has lain there dread not its gloom And so we may say of the peniten tiary Since C C Moore has lain there I dread not Its gloom Pshaw yet orthodox church has revised its creed to allow adults to escape the fiery ordeal The only hope for the race seems to be to die in Infancy This one point elimin ated from Presbyterianism seems to Impress Dr Hillls as the only revis ion necessary and with characteristic ministerial inconsistency he assures us that If Ingersoll were living today he would be a member of the Chris tian church but when we reflect that Ingersoll stood for the right to Investigate the right to life and erty and happiness for good works and good morals for justice hero and hereafter for friendship and fellow tilt towardtl men for ceedom of thought and speech for mental Integ rity and thQ majority of the human intellect the claim of Hillis that In gersoll would now belong to a Chris tian church is preporterous 0It Is very easy for anyone who ex ercises his reasoning faculties to un derstand how the many contradictions and Inconsistencies were Incorporated In the Bible Centuries ago a church council of several hundreds of bers each with Ideas to advance met to decide on the contents of the Holy Book The result was several bishops with broken heads and a mass of lit cratuo rejected after heated debates and much Incorporated as the in spired word which was bitterly op have a recurrence of this riotous council in the Church of England In the year of our Lord 1902 wherein the presiding Bishop had to Interfere to prevent personal violence among the delegates so radically did their differI there has been an the Episcopal and mother church and in this conference Rev Athelstan RIley made an Impas sioned plea for the worship of Images What an opportunity the occasion would have furnished for a humorist and a good cartoonist The cheers and continued applause which follow ed this appeal almost Insured the suc cess of the movement which would have made fortunes for the manufac turers of tin Saviors mothers of God and saints of various proportions and degrees of holiness effect was spoiled however by an heretical member Dr Alexander bishop of Der ry who so far forgot his early teach- Ing as to declare that all revelation Is progressive This precipitated controversy and the infallibility of the Bible was assailed in no uncertain terms and Rev Dr King threw an other bom by declaring the Bible could no longer bo regarded as the standard of morals Much time was devoted to the Ills emission of ritualistic ceremonials and following so closely upon the death of the antiritualist John Kcnsit much anger was manifested The re port states that the Congress was not a peace meeting but with this representation of heretics and fanat ics arrayed against each other we Infldcs can afford to stand aloof and watch the demolition of Bible by the men who are paid to preserve conditions In teaching selfreliance Instead of deluging Jesus with affection in teaching personal and contlnous effort Instead of praying for unattainable When all ministers adopt the humane unselfish methods of Infidels their pews will ho filled to overflow ingSome strange things transpired In the Rock River Illinois Methodist Conference recently adjourned De linquent ministers were dealt with in secret sessions especially charges of immorality charges of misappropriat ion of funds seemed to be beneath the dignity of this august assemblage When common theft occurs why Is there no one to prefer charges In a civil suit and gain restitution in the courts Is the machlner of inquisition in operation to secure immunity for Gods emmlssarles It seems so The usual heated debates were par ticipated In by the D Ds who in a gentlemanly and approved style called each other liars but no action was taken In the direction of heresy hunters though it would have been quite consistent to exclude Independent thinkers while the dissolute and immoral representatives retained their places One pugnacious bellweather of a bloodwashed flock whose thusiasm evidently exceeded his vo racity referring to the above dis cussion said Men are coming into our conference every year who are Universalists Not being asked the proper questions by examiners they slip through I am heartily In favor of excluding liberal thinkers Here Is another good Methodist who seems to have no regard for tho truth dare say that not a single Universalist has returned to tho Methodist conference to say nothing of members returning every year It would be a valuable education for the Methodists were they associated with Universalists occasionally A few ideas might thus be born In the orthodox brain Instead of liberal thinkers return ing to the church reverse Is true proved by their own representatives and organs The Baptist Standard says decrease in theological students is wide spread and the ones who enter are not as high grade intellectually or morally as 40 years ago Dr Jesse B Thomas Newton Theo logical Seminary says During the last year of the century theology lost 252 students while law gained and medicine 1435 Prof Ira M Price says The decrease in number of students for the ministry is a fact The professor quotes extenuate ing circumstances but a fact is a fact and a very stubborn thing and no amount of juggling with words can change the records though only every day observation Is necessary to prove that the thinkers are baying the church Instead of returning to It A Dr Chase was requested to resign his position because of immor amity and lying If lying Is an of fense to deserve exclusion from the conference where shall we list pre varication misrepresentation decep tion and general chicanery No church conference nowadays would be complete without whole ses shoes being given to the discussion of higher criticism and evolution theory and this one was no exception These two obstacles to oldtime belief were assailed with Invective Irony and ridicule by Dr Burns He declared that the theory of evolution has never been proved Well neith er has the theory of creation in Genesis been proved Neither has tho Biblical declaration of tho fall of man the plan of salvation or eternal damnation been proved If Methodists are only accepting things that havo been proved they should join Jap anese cult who declare only for a re ligion of scientific demonstration Ho also declares that the Interpretation of tho Bible as It Is written has been saving men for ages How many has It saved What has It saved them from Has It saved women and child ten nod heathen and pagan nations Did It abolish human slavery Did It enact just laws Did It arbitrate disputes Did It create happiness and Inspire justice No It has done none of these things but it has en slaved the race set one half of the people at the throat of the other half Defiled and degraded and damn ed women and
