print- Ing in his book and mine and found that Dog Fennel has about three times as much printing as Allens book has Of course his book will sell a great deal more than mine because there are a great Mrs Sarah J Smith wife of Mole tas Smith the subject of this sketch departed this life July 3rd 1903 It Is a sad and solemn task to fer to the good and noble woman as being dead But Nature decreed so and we are all bowed with sorrow at her taking off to the great beyond from which no traveller has yet re turnediMrs Smith was in her 58th year and leaves behind a host of sorrow ing friends a husband eight children and seventeen grand children to mourn her loss She has been a staunch liberal for a number of years and with her hus band Mqletas Smith attended the Cincinnati Congress year before last When the Congress met at Lexington in January she was then confined in a hospital at Charleston and the writer remembers only too well of how pleadingly she asked permission of her attending physician to be allowed to accompany her husband to the grand gathering of Liberals But she was in too weak a state to goindver thelessher heat wast woi Liberal rind friend to everybody It has been truthfully said that she did not have a single enemy on earth and if there be such as eternal life this grand and good woman has gone to her reward She always enjoyed the consoling Influence of the Blue Grass large sum to any one man yet a thousand times 20 makes 200 quite a little fortune just now to the publisher of the book I therefore offer my services to dis tribute the book to your subscribers in Cincinnati if you send them all to me by freight In cities where you have but few subscribers you can send It by express as printed matter at a low rate to one person who will volunteer to distribute the book to the subscribers as do Those who desire the book sent directlyand In some towns there may be only one subscribershould- add 20 cents for postage stamps will do when remitting their one accounts of another one of the ragodles that occur in this city with apld periodicity the instance in this ase as usual being among very re glous people The facts summarized from Lex gton papers are as follows Mrs Warren Is a young married jornan of Lexington her husband be in St Louis MrS Warren was staying at St Jo bphs Hospital in Lexington an In ttltutlon supported jointly by the jjfjathollcs and the public About 11 oclock At night in Mrs Barrens room a pistol shot was hoard Parties going into her room fiund a young man named Richard Hudson lying on floor with a tol ball hole clear through him The ball had entered just above his heart and came out near his spine He Is living as I write this On be iig asking how he was shot he said ho sjiot himself Warren having lieen asked about It said she was handling a pistol and that it went off accldentlyy and shot Hudson When Hudson was told what Mrs Warren said he said he had said what ledld to shield Mrs Warren iThe Lexington Democrat said that by request of the friends of both parties It had at first withheld the news Hudson said he had gone to Mrs iWarrena room to carry her an press package Ono of the Lexington papers says at It Is stands higher than Captain Redd He sa Presbyterian and Is a leader in Christian influence and he is regard ed by all who know him as an excel lent man I have known him Intimately ever since the civil war and while he has no sympathy witn my religious views am very proud to have him in my list of friends This shows that being a Christian does not save a man fromI troubleIJERKED TO- JESUS All the Way From Lexington were a Couple of Pious Catholic Cats On Friday hangmans day because Jesus Christ was hung on that day July 24tha couple of Catholics named OBrien and Whitney were hung In Lexington for murdering B Chinn one of the best men in the city even if ho was a Campbellite whoso house they had entered in the night for burglary Chinn was a Christian and good man and valuable citizen and there will be some doubt about his getting to heaven because his two Catholic brethren that killed him did not give him any time to pray but OBrien nod Whitney had plenty of time to pray and got down to their work In that line all right and kissed a silver cru cifix just before they lit out at the end of a rope and the two Catholic priests that were with them told them that the coast was all clear So certain were these two pious men that they were going straight to heaven after laying over a while in a Catholic purgatory to get their bag gage checked and lower berths on sleepers that they stood smoking cigars when the death warrant was read to them and when tho officer who read it trembled with emotion one of them said Did you see that fellow slinking The Pope has lately died and our Teddy is one of tho gang of fools and hypocrites from all over the world that telephoned their condolence to old Leos wife and children and all about what a loss tho world had sus tained by tho loss of this old codger who had sacrificed himself for Jesus to the tune of 25000000 and board and lodging and washing all found beside and these two fellows just hung In Lexington are samples of the moral trend of the religious teaching of that old Dago on the Tibur Ho and his religion say to vllllans I like OBrien and Whitney away off here in America Dont work be burglars and live without work and dont kill a man unless It becomes necessary to your own safety when you are burglarizing his house and In case the law does get oa to you and is going to crack your necks just send for the priests and let them talk some Latin over you and burn some candles and sprinkle some holy water and eat some Catholic wafers that have been prayed into the flesh of Jesus Christ and then kiss a silver crucifix and you are just as good for heaven an five cents Is for a drink of beer Postage on Dog Fennel Mr Moore having written a book of 340 pages the postage will necessarily be largemuch larger than can af ford to pay When I contracted with Mr Moore to publllsh tho book I did not expect it to make more than about twothirds of its present size But since it has lenghtened out to what It is the cost of paper typesetting and press work has all been increased nearly doubled and I find that my margin will be almost nothing- I have worked night and day on this book and I feel that I ought to realize some profits To give you some Idea of the cost I will present the following Items of cost per vol ume to me and have figured closely To Mr Moore on each vol 25 To binding on each vol To postage on each vol To paper on each vol To press work on each vol To type setting on each vol 12 To plates on each vol 10 Total cost 01 This as you see cuts my profits down to six cents a volume and I havo not counted such extras as Ing electricity used damage two trips to Cincinnati and other penses unforseen d marellAiglttTOgak twice as large afcokras wasfatJiKfet Intended a book that ought to sell for 150 the gain Is on their side and the loss on minethe cost of paper press work and postage being nearly of this gain to the sub scribers I request them to remit the postage In addition to the price of book You are not obligated to do this and it is not your fault if I make a bad contract but I did not figure on the book being so large- I believe that most of the subscrib ers are willing to send 16 cents the Infidel societies at St Louis are making preparations for the gathering of the Infidel clans there at the worlds fair next year We should make this by far the grandest Infidel demonstration that the world ever saw- think it would be for the best if the N L P and A S U would co operate on that occasion whatever they many do before and after that timeI suppose this split among us has come to stay but at St Louis where the A S U will also almost certain ly have its meeting it would make a bad showing to the world to have iw there in two antagonistic organiza zations am in favor of the two combin ing for that occasion at least and electing a president by the vote of the two to preside over the whole That arrangement will make each of the organizations do all it can to Injcrease its members Through the generosity of Secre tary Morris Sachs of the N L P that organization can be maintained almost without any individual ex pense and I would recommend that as soon as it can be constitutionally done the membership fee be changed from to 25 cents- believe that by this arrangement the organization would not only get more members but really get moro money I used to get 2 each fanatical public a decent respect for free speech and for free thought We owe this respect to Col Inger sell and we owe It to ourselves that we sustain the advantages and liberties gained by his audacious persist ent and relentless agresslveness Let not Liberalism permit his name and fame to be was that ofJPalmv sUIllias part wi calumhy vJliich + r rtfeadf being heaped upon his memory We can employ no better means for cOunter- acting their lying malicious attacks than by holding an annual memorial to his memory If we suffer his memory to die our silence will be couragement to the enemy to continue their vituperations We cannot af ford to lose even a small advantage gained If we permit the Influences of Ingcrsbll to wane or to bo weak ourIselvosTherefore let Liberals of cities or adjoining counties meet on August llth or the Sunday nearest and do fitting honor to the memory of Col Ingersoll and at the same time make It a Harvest Feast of Liberalism We desire that a report of every celebration no matter how few may bo gathered be sent our Secretary tho same to be published This will encourage the observation of the day and each year will find the num ber of memorial meetings Increasing We ought to receive at least 100 reports but If we got 25 or 50 for a start wo will feel satisfied In a few years these memorial meetings will como to be regarded as a fixed tom have read her life After reading it I soliloquized to myself by saying that C C Moore is the only living one who can solve this girl and now Mr Moore gives it up My opinion of her is that she still lacks something to materialize her lifo or nature She certainly was hated in embryo by her parentsper- haps by her father else her father was a tyrant and drove his child from his affections She has a heart be cause she loves nature I would love my parents unless I had been stamp led with a hatred before birth by them No matter how they treated me I would try to cultivate a love for them because If we tear away from human beings the sacred ties of a true home our lives will not be worth may be wedded to her brain activities I wish I could solve what she means by red red sky unless It is that Charles C Moore Dear SIrInclosed find 120 for Dog Fennel and the mailing of have the following proposition to make to Christians The Christian has all kinds of promises in their sa cred book that their prayers will be answered oven to the removing of it can be shown beyond a doubt that there Is a God that grants the earnest requests of people than all doubts all disbelief all infidelity will be removed and the world will be captured for Jesus Therefore I pro pose that on the 4th of July 1904 at 12 oclock noon St Louis time that every praying Christian on the earth petition their God that the Misslsippl river may immediately divide its wa ters so that a committee of 10 emi nent preachers professors and scion Lists may pass through dry shod- I believe that every Infidel publica tion overy Infidel society and every individual Infidel will gladly promise in advance to renounce their disbelief if the river opens up as by request Now my dear Christian friends hero Is a chance to capture the world improve It If what you teach us Is true you have a sure thing for surely there is one person in the whole world who can exercise sufficient faith Dont treat this proposition with contempt and if you do not act upon it wo Infidels will use it as a club maul the lIfo out of Respectfully JOHN WH1TLOCK Comment About twentyfive years ago Prof Tyndall the eminent En gush scientist made a proposition to the English people that was similar to this He proposed that the wards in a large hospital be divided into two equal parts and that Christians should pray for the recovery of those in one specified part and not for those In the Christians called It blasphemy and called It the Tyndall prayer did this because they were liars and knew that those Bible stories about dividing the Red Sea and the river Jordan by miracle were Christians have raised 20000 000 to capturo tho world for Jesus at the beginning of this the 20th cen tury They are not capturing it worth a cent and on the other hand the Infidels are making unusually big arrangements for a big jamboree at St Louis next year almost certainly the largest demonstration of Infidel interest that tile world has over seen Christian sky busters will do a big lot of wind Jamming to make their dupes put up their money to pay preachers but when it comes to malt ing any test of the truth of their re ligion you will always find that like the Irishmans flea when you go to put your finger on him he aint there TRIED HIM UNDER THE CHARGE OF BLASPHEMY Atlanta Ga July 1903I Dear Mr Hughes- sent you a list the other day I now inclose you the post office money or der for the amount will do more for you In this country of the Lord If I can but they do love their Jesus down here The writer has just experienced some of that ardent love This city must be away above parI in rellgiou fervency as there has beenJ for years from three to five different crowds preaching on the street It has also many churches and more be- Ing built It pas been my greatest pleasure in tho year gone by to assemble self in this vicinity to radiate some ray of light on the truth to this poor benighted and God fearing people I say it meekly but I have put to flight many a devoted believer in this part at his moral vineyard so the ever VaTcMUl ftftd vigil fotTlTUatdiartorrtnej peace had long ago spotted the old unbeliever and wicked sinner as the only deadly foo of this otherwise se rene and God fearing community so the other night he heard me say to some pious people that had Informed me that I could not live another mo ment or draw one breath without the help of the Lord or Jehovah that I dared this God or Jehovah to touch me as I could draw my breath and would so prove to them that I could withstand his or his sons aid That was blasphemy indeed and the dear old cop laid for me and the follow ing Sunday when I engaged a Chris tian gentleman In quite a heated dis cussion on the merits of tho grand old book the pious cop swooped down on us and gathered in quite a supply and we had to attend court with all of the different transgressors of the law there to face the dis pensor of justice and answer to theI charge of being an Infidel for thisI was the real crime covered up by that obstructing the streets That charge was made as they well knew that tho United States government guaranteed me the high privilege of believing as I prefered but their case did not work to tho interest of the arresting officer He laid great stress on the fact that Mr Ray was an Infi del and that everybody knew It and when he went out on the street a crowd gathered around him and they wanted it stopped The judge Judge Broyce informed them thatI he could not interfere with free speech or religious belief so long as tho party did not disturb tho street or Interfere with the passage of hicles and was not disorderly You see even In this city of churches we sometimes get an honest decision from the bench who know that this continued handllnig of this subject of Freedom has set up the vibratory waves and some of them have gone even into the bench and what was really in revenge of a law abiding citizen actually turned out to be a good lesson to some of the more zealous of tho meek and lowly fol lowersI think that we should fight every Inch of our way to obtain that liberty to which all men are en titled W R RAY Owing to being so busy finishing up Dog Fennel we were compelled to cut the amount of reading in this Blade a little short for which wo ask our subs crlbers to overlook this week A PENITENTIARYCONVICT WRITES ABOUT DOG FENNEL AND SENDS IN HIS DOLLAR Deer Lodge Mont July 1903 Rev Charles C Moore Enclosed you will find for Dog Fennel which there Is no doubt In my mind will be both amusing and Instructive to read I am anxious to hear what you have to say about the places you visited Pay no attention to that old fossil and his ten cent pamphlet I want Just one dollars worth of truth and solid facts When read Dog Fennel should como to tho conclusion that I have got more than my dollars worth will remit the first opportunity Every one knows that reads the Blade and Is acquainted just a little with your past that you ought to know something about the skypilot business for you have been there but you were too honest a man for the whooping up business but even ready at the drop of the hat Here something has been omittedEditor should any of those Inspired sancti fied worthless creatures who have no more honor than to live upon the charity of credulous women Say Brother you are there to de fenA truth with all your might wish you success with your book- I hope the wheels in your nature are in good running order and that they will continue to be so for many good years yet- I say NO the Blade must not die and be stamped out of existence- I remain Mr Heathen yours very respectfully HUGH LACKIE CommentThat is written on regulation penitentiary paperI know it when I see Itand all shows that the writer Is a convict Here is an In stance where a man In the peniten tiary seems to be an Infidel but I do not believe that he is as much of a criminal as any one of the gang Judge jury attorney or witness that sent me to the penitentiary I believe that this brother in the penitentiary Is of an order of high morals that that Christian gang cannot conceive of and that ho would scorn to descend to tho moral level of such men as Thompson and Rucker A PERFECT TRIP Grand Army Headquarters Train to the Reunion at Saner nc ace 251903hLouisville Ky July arrangements have now been teaches on the subject Dr James McKnight a Hobrev scholar says tint in Hebrew theo Is no word that means soul as the word Is understood by tho Christians Does tho New Testament teach the immortality of the soul as that word Is now understood- I have had scholars to tell mo tin It does not- Spurgeon says in his printed set mons that the Immortality of the soul Is not a Christian doctrine but that It Is a cult of heathenism When Paul preached on Mars lit on the resurrection of tho dead tin Greeks laughed at him They hall been schooled in tho doctrines of Plo to Had Paul preached on the Immoi doctrine of the mortality of tho soul is not plainly If at all taught in the Old Elijah Is taken bodily to heaven Solomon teaches plainly that a man has no consciousness after death that ho dies just like a beast and the man and beast all go to place so that a man hath no preeminence over a beast The New Testament teaches the Immortality of the soul Just as the rsrppVR and other Platonlsts had done t long before the birth ot Tcstis but In adltlon to that Paul taught The resurrection of the body and It was of this feature of the gospel that Paul spoke when he said It was t the Greeks foolishness- I havo just thrown Into my waste barrel a communication from some woman who is cock sure of the Im mortlaity of the soul from a communication that she as a spiritual medium has just received from Abraham Lin coin and the tommyrot that she attributes to old Abe is real nauseat ingBut nobody who reads Daniel K Tenney competently has any doubt that he is a master intellect and his defence of anyth ng so thoroughly unscientific as spiritualism becomes a matter of moment to any thinking such a man as Bro Ten ney must appreciate that spiritualism- Is entitled to no dignified considera tion from the pretences of the med lumistic fakirs that get money at their seances and ghost shows Bro Tenney is apparently a man sufficient brain power to appreciate- the ridiculous absurdity of the claims of the spiritualistic literature that floods tho country and If he has any thing now to offer In behalf of spin itualism ho ought to show It to us We dont want to fool away any more time on talkeetakee we have had that ad nauseaum and If Bro Tenney has anything new to show us on the subject he ought to trot It outnot before some little handful of profes atonal spiritualists whether editors or mediums in some little dark hole with coal oil lanmps turned down but before a competent tribunal of his Infidel brethren with sunlight or oleo trlclty turned on It Spiritualists have been lend to me In times when most needed friends and appreciate that kindness but if as an organization wo are to bo scientists and philosophers we cannot sanction spiritualism Spiritualists are people who have advanced sufficiently to pot out of Christianity but have gotten out of tho frying pan Into tho fire If I am to believe In any brand of ghost I would just as soon back tho ghost that was the daddy of Jesus Christ that at least has the dignity t of age and a big and respectable clientele as any of these little ghosts that tho spiritualists are showing nil over the country that pop
