WILLIAM RAN DOLF HEARST GREATEST JOURNALIST THAT AMERICA EVER HAD Expresses Sentiments Reprinted In This Issue of the Blade That Should Make Him the Infidels Candidate for President In 1904 I have for some time supposed that William Randolf Hearst with his great papers in hew York Chicago and San enterprisingjournaUst tile time had the general Impression that he was a very advanced thinker- have the general Impression that he has offered his name as a candi date for president of the United States but to what extent he has pressed his claim if at all I do not friend who Is unknown to me has sent me the three editorials from Mr Hearsts papers that are printed In this issue of the Blade My gratification at reading them is simply Immense and think the sentiment of these editorials plainly marks him as the man that American Infidels should support in 1904 for President of the United States and if there is any doubt of his candidacy all people in the United States who are In favor of separating church and State In the management cf the af fairs of this government should ex press to him their desire that he should become their candidate for PresidentI mean to say that Mr Hears Is as able a defender of the principlee of Freethought as various propagan diets male and female of tho cause propagandiststheremately available Mr Hearst is a champion of the leading principles of Infidel thought and he Is Immense ly available I am myself an Atheist anft a late symposium In the Blade think shows that the general trend of Infidelity Is toward atheism Mr Hearst is not an Atheist and editorially makes an argument against Atheism some of which I think un tenable and to which I reply Mr Hearst does not even so far as I have seen announce himself an Infidel of the deistic school but It seems evi dent that he Is in full sympathy and fellowship with such Infidels as Paine Franklin Jefferson and Lin- Coln all of whom were deistic Infidels- do not believe that It would be most expedient for us to want an Atheist for our candidate for presl dent of the United States- A consistent Deist as Mr Hearst seems to be would do for us all that even the most radical Atheist asks in affairs of government and of course we ought not to want to tax the com mon Christian faith any more than is absolutely necessary for there are many Christians who while they would not be willing to abjure their faith to support for president a man like Hearst would nevertheless sup port him simply because he defends the true spirit of this government that was Sounded on Infidelity by In fidels the very basic principle of this government Its main corner stone being that religion should not be al lowed to Influence the affairs of this government In any official capacity- It seems to me that Mr Hearst plainly announces his support of the very leading cf the principles that we embodied In the platform of the National liberal Party We have as I have suggested men In the National Liberal Party who more fully represent our views than Mr Hearst does but we have no man who could make any canvass for pres idency that would be at all formidable because we have not among us the means to make such a canvass Mr Hearst has means abundant and has great newspapers to support him and he is in sympathy with the main features of our cause without any effort on our part to make him so and it is quite possible that he would make any conservative conces alone that we might ask of him We should have a meeting of the executive committee pf tho National Liberal Party to formulate an address to Mr Hearst and get from him an expression of wont he would be willing to do for us and while am person ally a radical of the radicals think such an address should be quite con servative FREETHOUGHT GRASS BLADE A REPLY TO EDITOR HEARSTS EDITORIALI AN INCUBATOR CHICK IS AL WAYS AN ATHEIST My exceedingly high regard for Editor Hearst Is found expressed else where In this Issue of the Hltuto hut I to his editorial against AtholKm have some objections that are valid tenable defensible I review the editorial seriatim I do not understand how any man who 11 was not an Catholic could have been Interested to have the Pope recover except upon sonic personal ground of no moment to the general public Certainly the dead Pope was no friend to Atheism know but little of Masonry but understanding Is that no man can rconsistently be a Mason who does not believe In a God and I think that If 1Ji2a man became a Mason believing In a God and afterward become an Athe t 1st ho should withdraw from Masonry t I db not think the publication of the f cablegram was any attack on Mason ry see no force whatever In Mr Hearsts pronunciamento that an Atheist Is one who to revert to an animal condition On the other hand It Is one of the of Chrisearnestly maintained claims Hans that even the very lowest of tile s human races believe In the existence J of a Certainly It Is true in tills country and In all other countries that the f belief In the existence of a God Is more common in tho exact ratio ot Ignorance of tho people and that trthe increases In the exact ratio r+ of the education of Vie people Certainly the xsegroes in this count try are the most ignorant people ol this country I never knew more than three or four Negroes who were ft Deists and never knew one that was i an Atheist though I have spent my i whole rather long life in the South r Certainly the next to the most ig ir norant people in this country are the Irish and among these of all the white people in America there is the smallest per cent of Atheists f The untutored savage Indian In his native state Invariably believed In the Great Spirit Nobody ever heard of such an Indian being an Atheist fSince they have become educated many of them have become Atheistic and are ardent supporters of my Athe istic paper- have known a great many Athe- Ists I never knew one who was not sufficiently intelligent to defend his position in writing or orally Some of the most scholarly minds of the world have been Atheists and apropos of Dr Mazzoni a Latin max Im says Ubi tres medlcl duo athel an ancient recognition that the study of the human anatomy induced Atheism It seamLtherefore that the bell t a a ten ncyto I lowest condition ofthe human race y a disposition to revert to the animal condition Mr Hearsts statement that All kinds of minds are interesting except tho foolish negative mind is only one of the millions of things that people including editors say when ey dont know exactly what it is y are trying to say with the result you never can understand what y mean because they themselves not understand what they mean aurt It is simply a waste of tUne and tInlt to comment on any such state w Such statements are not even r worthy of as much consideration as of talking throughthe best Instances you hat- The statement that The mind of the absolute Atheist Is foolishly neg1 ive If it means anything Is beg ging the whole question in issue It d has no more argument In it than if hould say The mind of the absolute fi deist is foolishly positive David said Tho hath said in his heart There is no God I could Just as easily say The fool hath said in his heart there is a God In neither case would anything be proyed They are simply the opposing epic ions of two men with a reasonable l supposition that I am more Intelligent r and more moral than David was and that therefore my opinion Is worth more than Davids Mr Hearst say If a man says I do I not know ho is respectable If that means anything worth printing It tmeans that tho less a man knows the t more espectablo ho is and that to know not respectable rtMr Hearst says If a man says and there is no God he Frceases to be respectable he becomes i That kind of talk will do for the pulpit where a preacher or priest car up and say Just any old thing suits him and to dispute what then and there Is In violation statute against Interrupting 1that worship but editors who say like this will of course be down from all quarters converse of Mr Hearsts propo rsltlon Is that the man who says I do and there Is a God is repecta ble But respectable by whom ri1 People who say there is a God are of course repected by Deists and people who say there is no God are of course respected by Atheists and what Is tho senso of printing such in ane platitudes Whats the sent of saying he be comes petrified Such language does no meant anything and does not prove anything if it did mean something There is no force in the remark about the man and animal laughing especially as there is the laughing hyena and a parrot can out laugh any tho matter of lighting a fire there Is an evident difference A man can strike a match on the seat of his breeches and no anlml except a moo key can do that Nobody can tell whether or not animals have a conception of Deity and whether they have or havo not could not at all prove the existence of a Deity whatever that may I vil m1 moan That the minds of animals took for causes Is familiar to the merest tyro in natural history Men do not see and practice the beauty of abstract Justice harmony and der nearly so perfectly an animals do Men habitually rob other men simply because they can do It and ants never rob other bees and antsPeople rob birds nests but no bird ever robs another birds nest Worshiping tho source of cosmic law If that means anything cannot possibly bo any more ennobling than worshiping Mumbo Jumbo Then you say We do not suggest that Atheists are lacking in moral character or are worse than other men Well then what are you kicking about If Atheists are Just as good as other people what do you expect to accomplish by writing against them What aro you trying to do any I thought Christians were Just aa good as Infidels I certainly would- uut spend my life and fortune and be a penitentiary convict beside Just to beat the Christian religion According to your own plain statement It would make no difference In the morals of the world whether all people were Atheists or believers In a God There Is then no kick coming to you under that head and you must not kick against Atheism You complain that tho Atheists ac Sept their own foolish doubts as facts Who is the arbiter in this matter What tribunal has decided that their Joubts are foolish How do you prove that they regard their doubts is facts Certainly tho very word doubt means that the matter under llscusslon Is not an established fact That old argument about the watch of which Paley was the au hor had been worn to a frazzle when t was taught theology in 1856 7 and But I will go over it again The ound watch proved that there was a naker and the maker proved to be a man The found man proved to have maker and the mans found maker proved to be God The found God hen to be consistent with the argu nent must prove to have had a malt Jr and so on ad Infinitem each God having a maker that must have pre eded him In other words Paleys old argument jased on the watch Is the prattle of a words a cosmic mind means ibsolutely nothing simply Jargon There Is no kind of a mind without t brain ganglions medulla oblonga ita or some living animal thinking ipparatus and such an expression as cosmic mind Is only used by a nan who does not know what he is rylng to say and is trying to male lomebody thinks that hethe speaker knows something that he does not mow A mud mind is Just as Intelligible is a cosmic mind Confine yourself strictly to language that you and tbers can understand and you wjll ind that you cannot conduct a logical irgument In favor of the existence of YGod fotfiziTg ghte 1r of Atheists adds no strength to your assertion Certainly there have been many Atheists who have gained more fame for their competency along hat line of thought than you have You are a great Journalist You lave money one of the great essen Ials for great Journalism and I high iy honor and appreciate the bold stand hat you have taken against the reli Ious superstition but you must not undertake to belittle those who are sertainly your Intellectual peers and who see cause to differ with you The heading of your article The Incubator Chick etc Is undignified iiadlifage illy fitting the dignity of the subject under discussion- am obliged to you for the admis ion that the Atheist tries to think Very few people do If the letter that you publish from in Atheist Is indeed a fair sample nf many that have reached you It Is certainly a grand tribute to Atheism That is the language of the kind gentleman and scholar My only obJec- tion to that letter is that the writer did not give his name and address but that seems to have been omitted by his modesty Of course a God Is not necessarily i thing to bo feared but It Is a fact that the Bible that believes In a God says The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom Your statement that The Atheist Is feeble because he lets his feeble Judgments shut his mind can be swered by my statement that the Deist and Christian are feeble cause they let their feeble Judgments shut their minds There is no argument in either case It is simply as if you should say there isa God rnd I should say there Is no Got It is simply an nouncement of the issue between us What we want is argument You have the burden of proof and mere assertion does not count You say plainly there Is no such thing as a single cell and then you say What we call a single cell Is a conglomeration of endless billions of atomsIf is no such thing as a single cell why do you call this conglomeration of endless billions of atoms a single cell What are you kicking you call a single cell is probably the same thing that the Atheist Dr Mazzoni calls a single cell and the fact that it is composed of less billions of atoms does not keep It from being a single cell any more than the fact that there are many atoms In a single silver dolla keeps It from being a single says do know and there Is no God he ceases to be respecta blehe becomes petrified The atheist is a reversion toward the animal type In our humble opin ion But it is only an opinion Some men say that the chief dif ference between an animal and a hu man being consists in the fact that the human being can laugh and the animal cannot Others say that the chief difference between animals and men consists in the fact that the animal knows when he Is well off and does not bother himself about things that ho does aced Still others say that man Is different from the animals because he can light a fire and keep it going We believe that man is different from the animals principally because lie has a conception of the Deity He different from the animals because ills mind seeks for causes It sees the beauty of abstract justice hal Tinny and orders and revently war shlps the irct of deavorlng feebly according to J Otis levelopmcnt r dive omnipotence define its pu and obey Its The asylum Idiot who lose power to talk shows an Incll to run about on all fours dud wise acts like an animal is rev to the animal condition in a pi way We believe that the athslst back to the animal condition mental way We do not suggest that at are lacking In moral character ia re worse than other men Thelrlwlef fault perhaps Isa childish which leads them to accept their foolish doubts as facts and males it possible for them out at a universe of wonders a beauties to deny the existence sinking planning power greate themselves The atheist see n wonderful In his own power t struct a watch that runs with Ion for years But he denies th- sible existence of a cosmic mln able of evolving a solar cyst run for billions of years Fo atheist this may be said Ho h ually tried to think at least L Is scarcely to be congratulated this thinking leads him backwar into barren fields We publish ono letter a sample of many have reached us To the Editor am a great admirer of your ng and evening papers I hay lowed with particular Interest editorials of your inestimable Ev American and frankly confess they have Instructed me on mat Important subject For the first time I happened b thrown into an embarrassment bwbne of your editorials The title of tYa This is an Age of Toleration You mention that the Pop p doiibtedly deeply mourned the l ors atheism as well he might c the atheist is one doing his best WRO ack to the animal kingdom Now wish to ask you how th Dr Mazzoni is certainly a high telllgent man Judging him fro 1 position and lame in life and he s became an atheist by being conv of Its truth Moreover there v ery indication to believe that he be one of the foremost atheists world because being a pr m physician he possesses a more jltiai ordinary knowledge as to how thwfcu man being developed from a sif1 cellAnd this Dr Mazzoni openly s that he would willingly give ten of his life to add one year to thi ft of another suffering animalismcWhat Is this Is this cording to what you say such v full of human sympathy oug have been uttered by a atronglyi glous man and not by a great atas Dr Mazzoni is 3 am an atheist myself I har heart in me which trobs veins with as pure blood as tllaverage strong man be lIe 10 m how devoted to his God I have a wife and one child JI vide for them with fruits of j f Jij labor abstain from all splrtuous beverages smoking chewing and public or private can tell of any crime that have ever com mittedI been religious yours ago have grown out of It Whenever think that I have no mysterious pow er to fear and hence no need of pray ing to It feel happy Nevertheless shall appreciate It very much and am certain that others of your readers will do the same If you should discuss In your valuable evening edition the subject Atheism Perhaps we atheists are really going backward Instead of ad vancing toward the ideal man main respectfully yours B H P SKlmlly publish the initials of my namo only To this friendly critic we beg to say that belief In a supreme mind or power or Impersonnal eternal justice does not necessarily Imply belief in a God to be feared The savage fears the wrath of his idol lIe thinks tho idol will make his cattle sick or poison his wives Some religious people among us believe in a God that tences men and women and even lit tle children to eternal hell fire with real brlmstope But it is not necessary to believe In a God more cruel and base than any conceivable man In order to believe In God The atheist is feeble because he lets his feeble idgments shut his mind Our correspondent says Maz aunt is a great atheist because he knows that man develops from a gle cell First there Is no such thing as a single cell What we call a single cell Is a conglomeration of endless billions of atoms and these again are subdi vided But we shall take tho statement literally Because man comes from a single cell you deny the existence of God An Incubator chick pewly hatched Is probably an atheist It says proud ly I came from that single egg I owe no thanks to anybody There Is no God there is in fact no hen for I see none But we know that the chick Is Ish Some hen did lay the egg Some man did feel and protect the hen and put the egg in the incubator Some force some mind above the man put him here in this earthly In cuhator We shy to atheists Dont reason lie an Incubator chick LOS ANGELES LIBERAL CLUBS INGERSOLL CELEBRATION Tho grandest Freethought demon stratlon ever held In this city has Just closed and the name of Ingersoll and what It represents has been adver tised In a local sense from Capo Nome to Key West and from centre to clrcumferance or in other words from hell to breakfast About two months ago the Los geles Liberal Club decided to hold commemorative exercises on Inger solls seventieth birthday and as a tollIvethls it1U11recturpT1 Liberty of road by a good elocutionist Several numbers of excellent music by the best talent to be had was added and then another Innovation by charging an admission of 25 cents Another hall had been secured to provide for those who pre erred a free meeting The committees on both worked hard and long In arranging for and advertising the meetings and I am happy to say that both halls were full and so was one of the speakers but that cut no figure for Ingersolllan orators of both sexes are as thick as flies in this part of the country In fact It is harder to muzzle some of them than to get enough If the sllver tongued orator had appeared as advertised wo wouldnt have got home till morning Catholic orators with silver tongues are not to be depended on to eulogize Bob Ingersoll unless there is sum lent incentive in the way of a fee The local papers were astonished that two thousand heretics would gather on one night to honor the memory of the great Agnostic and stranger still tho principal meeting was presided over by a Christian minister the Rev T W Williams who said he was proud to admit that lie had read some of Ingersolls tures and had profitted by so doing and that Ingersoll had been called the worlds blasphemer and cited that beautiful poem Childhoods Happy Laugh as a sample of his blasphemy Furtheromore that the church was nearer to truth today and Ingersoll hall brought them to it In his sarcasms and attacks he has compeller the church people In the face of ular sentiment to relinquish one by ono the relics of the dark ages If there was more of good honest truth like that coming from the pits the pews would not be empty The meetings were very successful In every way even to the finances and consequently Los
