of exhaling an inflammable gas from its flowers which on being approached by a light takes fire and burns brightly for a few moments tho plant In the mean while remains uninjured owing to ItsI the hot deserts of Arabia where the plant naturally grows more orously than at Kew a larger quantity of this gas is exhaled and it Is probable that the fierce rays of tho sun frequently cause it to take fire BLADE MAGAZIN Will Be the Most Valuable Magazine In the World If You Will Give Me Only 500 Subscribers to Start on We Have About 170 Now I havo Just received from New Hope Ark a letter from a brother E Mizzles who sends mo from that town tho names of IWo subscribers for the Blade Mngarlne telling inc that he has the 25050 cents each for a yearto send Just as soon as we tell hint the magazine Is ready do not know whether these parties are subset beifi to the lilade but think It quite proVnnlo that someI of them possibly mort of them have never subscribed for tho Blade There would naturally be a great many people who would prefer to pay cents for a mtipilno each mouth that would have nit In It Unt the pa per had had for the preceding month and especially as they could got the magazine for ents a year when the paper costs a year If not gotten InI clubs of five 6r more In which cuss It is 50 cents Tho magazine Is tot going to be any slouchy affair You see how Dog Fennel looks gotten up In the Blade office and there were no flies tho monkey got an old tomcat and painted him with poke berries he stood off tit a little distance and gazed upon tha effect all said Neat but not gaudy That sizes up Dog Funnel Its In fine taste and easily read and virtually says to the world Its my sides not my outstdcj that bank onThe Blado magazine would be got ten up on that same principle Since Dog Fennel was printed the Blade office has gotten in a lot of new things and now for the cost of it tho Blade offlno is the most com plete and Influential printing office that the world over saw and thats no joke Now heres whit worries me Near ly every issue of this paper has in it something that somebooy says ought to be In pamphlet form A whole lot of thorn are now just a rearing up Jon their hind legs and pawing tho air and chawing a rag about getting Wilsons Tom Paine letter In pamphlet form Good piece but not a durn bit better than 1000 I have written and not as good not more than halfas things that Mrs Henry and Mrs COSB write and those two are over their summers big lazy and are now going to turn themselves loose In the Blade and then every mail here will come that same old racket about printing what they say m pamphlet form and to dOM as It is nQw all of that type would have to bo set over again and wJr would have to sell yen the pam phlets just as these other Infidel pub lications do while If tho magazine Is 1running I can furnish you pamphlets for one third that any other Infidel printing house In tho world can do never more than one cent each for the type would all be In form fur tho magazine and wo would simply have to stick them In the press turn on tho electricity and there you are and we would certainly print any pamphlet that had orders for 500 worth and possibly for halt that If you all will go aherii like shonuff men and women and send me the balance to make the 500 subscriber and dont be foreyer aryl a day about it simply for one year I am not at all afraid of the success of tho magazine after that At tho end of one year you would no more connent to have the mazagiiie stop than you would new consent to have tilt Blade stop If you all iink that old Brother Green and Brother Shaw would have any kick coming to them because I would be getting out a better magazine than theirs for half the price all they will have to do is to send their magazines to me to print and I will do It for about half they can get done for In any such onehoss towns as Waco and Chicago Waco never Is wake and Chicago Is a poor go I am the only Infidel editor In the wholo Gods world that could make a proposition like that to his patrons and thoy would not take It In just like a trout does a fly There will be ten or fifteen thou sand people who will read this and tho balance to bo subscribed to get tho Blade Magazine started would be only about 17600 that Is 350 sub scribers at 50 cents each actually but little more than one cent each for the people who will read this Not a cent that you subscribe for tho Blade Magazine would comb to meall to Mr Hughes He Is no more kin to me than ho Is to you One Infidel paper gets 300 a year for Its paper and has had 13000 given it in the last few years that It has reported in big hunks that I have counted and Its average subscribers according to its printed letters where It never gives the address sends It 300 a year In pay and gives It 250 besides and yet the editor of that paper could not make as good a paper as tho Blade to save his soul from hell If he had any soul and there was any lieu If you all are thus discriminating against the Blade because you dont like my writing nil you have to do is just to say so and say It pd q and I will quit p d q Now In answer to what I am now writing will tell you just what I wilt get will get Just about 20 subscrlb ers to the Blade Magazine at 50 cents a year and I will get three of four let tens vllllfylng me because I am ways begging and abusing peoplo who do help me because other people wont help me and a bigger lie never was toldslnco Annanlas and St Peter died and poor Jo Mulhatton was put In the lunatic asylum and tho govern went stopped the Keene whose farms aro In sight all around me with ten times all tho race horse glory beside that those three men have but for all that It cuts me and cuts deep when for months after months I havo to beg of 15000 people to subscribe at cents a year te poor pitiful little measely mangy crosseyed bowleg ged sum of to start a Magazine that I know and you know would be the most valuable Magazine In the world and thats no blowing my own bazoo because when I went to tho Or lent and did not oven see tho Blade everybody In the United States except Mrs Henry In a private letter to myI wife said tho Blade was better I was on the other side of the worldI than It was when I was writing If you dont send the subscriptions for tho B lade Magazine pretty fast after this appeal to you I am going to quit fooling with It any more but It will always stick in my craw that you didnt do It DOWIE Will Probably Do Good for the Cause of Infidelity Extracts from the Associated Press telegrams of Dowies arrival In New York are as follows Dowie was scheduled to arrive In Weehawken on tho West Shore road and thither went 150000 persons to see the prophet His coachman elegant carriage and 5000 span cf horses all shipped hero from his homo in Zion City were also there to meet him In tho first place his followers made loud demands for food Then came the direful tidings that before Mrs Dowie had left her private car at the Grand Central Station a thief had en tered and stolen her 1500 diamond broochI not as John Alexander Dowie nor as tno head of the Chris tian Catholic Church in Zion but as a prophet sent from God I care not If you smile at the word prophet I care not If your facile pens cast aspersions on me It will be ridiculing the man who brings the message of God Wo love Christ because He Is our Brother and our Father Here the prophet caught sight of a woman reporter and advancing to her he patted her patronizingly on the shoulder and said And we love Christ because He Is your Moui er Then Dowle wept readThe Oar den was the scene of a wild demon stration on the part of the hungry restoration host For a few minutes it looked as though the religious enthusiasts would mob the commissary department Threats were made women urged the men on and the little children in tho party cried for food Dowie after severely lecturing the host of nearly four thousand persons telling them they would have to wait until 5oclock for a meal said he would proceed to the Plaza Hotel for his lunch John Glbney the head porter of the Plaza Hotel was tho first man In New York to submit himself to the healing powers of Dowie For months Glbney said this afternoon he has been suffering from an aCMe tion of the left leg Peace be with thee With this tho Dowie greeting as the password crooks from everywhere are descend ing on New York expecting fo do a thriving business In robbing flats and apartment houses The three or four thousand follow ers of Elijah II wul In a day or two be scattered through flats apartment houses and private homes all over the city They will begin shortly too their work of housetohouse vis the enterprising crooks have decided gives them a golden opportu nlty It is for the Interest of Infidelity to have Dowie mako a success of his Invasion of Gotham because being a notorious villlan and Impostor It will show that that is exactly the kind of a man to succeed as a great religious private wants of the religious leaders before the time of Moses nothing Is known But beginning with Moses we know Moses was a murderer and refugee from justice He and tho horde that he led out of Egypt borrowed an Immense amount of jewelry from the Egyptian women under the pretense that they were going for ony a few days Into tile wuuerness for religious worship They have never returned that jewelry to this day The great purpose of Moses was to get money and prop triumphal entry Into Jerusa lem of Jesus Christ and the triumph al entry of Dowie Into New York are parts of tho same program The scheme of Jesus was to be King of Judea The followers of sus ate loaves and fishes while he invited himself to dinner with Zaccheus a banker and was In a habit of going to tile comfortable home of Lazarus a rich man at Beth any where he got good things to eat and Jesus rebuked John the Baptist because John was In favor of great abstinence in eating and drinking Jesus provided tbo wine for a big wedding feat While the women were making threats because they were hungry and the children were crying for bread Dowie tells them that they can get nothing to eat until oclock that evening and gets into his car rialto with a 5000 pair of his horses and drives oft to the Plaza Hotel for his lunch You would think that common sense and common justice would make the people despise Dowie for such heartlessness but the masses who follow him have no common sense and no sense of justice and Dowie has lately seen In the case of tho Popes that the more these great pretenders despise their dupes the moro devoutly their dupes will follow them When Jesus saw Jerusalem It is said Jesus wept When Dowie saw New York and got in a good public place to weep it Is said Then Dowie wept Jesus and Dowie wero practicing the same tactics If Jesus had practiced the samo thing about doing things like that In secrecy that he taught to others nobody would ever have known that ho wept Then Mohammed came along He was for money just like tho others he got It by marrying a rich wid so that you do not pee In Mo hammeds career that ho was schem ing for money like Moses and Jesus In America we hall Jo Smith His tame was principally owing to tho fact that he was killed by other religionists when he was propagating his religion That was also the secret of the fame of Jesus If Jesus and Jo Smith had never got killed the world would never havo heard of them If Dowie can start a first class sensation In New York and get killed right In the midst of It tho chances are more than even that he will start a religion just as Jesus and Smith did Madam Blavatskl and Mrs Eddy and Slatter and Schwelnfurth and Barnes all failed as starters of re ligions because none of them got killed and had too good a time out of lifeMoses and Mohammed succeeded and did not get killed but Mohammed ans date time from the hegira the flight of Mohammed and the fact that Mohammed had to flee from his own country and thus got to be a martyr was effectually used by his friends in his behalf Dowie is stating that he has been arrested more than a hundred times to get the sympathy that attaches to martyrs but as nobody knows of his ever having had to suffer any and as he has lived in great luxury and wealth his wife dressing In 1500 dia monds it will bo hard for him to pose successfully as a martyr From a Blade Reader In the Penitentiary Dear Lodge Mont Sept 20 03 Dear Messrs Moore and Hughes Please find enclosed 200 for my what is the matter with Brer Kidder I enjoy parties asking me about an article I wrote you under the caption ofWhat do We Believe I desire to explain why I think a person can be a theological Deist or Atheist and yet be an Agnostic Among Christians ninety nine of every hundred cannot give an intelligent definition of either of the four words Infidel Deist Atheist or Agnostc and some Liberals are af flicted with the same disease 1 A man can be Infidel to any rellglOlrcreed or belief The minute becomes infidel Martin Luther yas infidel to the established creed ol his time as Charles Chllton Moore js the present day and time The commonly accepted usage of the word that it means a person who rdenlr4l divine origin cf the Blble A elst Is an Infidel who believes that tlistudy of science and nature warrant the belief in a Supreme In telilgencp He does not have to lieve In fa strictly personal God who supervises our finite life In every detail to be a Deist Neither does he have to believe In a future life to be a Deist A Deist can consistently believe that death ends all conscious ness while it is true that very few do A Deist can also have as strong a hope for an eternal life beyond the tomb as any orthodox Christian An Atheist is an Infidel who ieves that the study of science and nature warrants the belief that there Is no Supreme Intelligence that death ends all consciousness and that nature produces without design and destroys without intention An Agnostic is an Infidel who be lieves that there is nothing to definite ly settle the contention between De- Ism and Atheism so takes the stand of not knowing That Is being un able to either affirm of deny the ex Istence or nonexistence of a Su preme Intelligence and frankly says soTho word Agnostic If I remember aright was coined by Spencer to de fine his position between the acute Darwinlanlsm which was sweeping the country and the orthodox religion tc being an apt word was caught up at once So you see Deists Athe ists and Agnostics are all Infidels The Times days for the prayer to be answered the petitioner became Impatient and attempted to undertake the task him Hoff was just recently appointed to this pastorate and he has been en fit gaged in building a church building the Evangelical denomination having been established here beforep The building Is so arranged that church may be conducted in the low er room while the upstairs was fitted up for living apartments During the erection of the building the minister and his family have been living in a barn arranged for that pur pose But all Infidels are not Atheists neither are they Deists But I sist that when it comes to a logical showdown though from theory you may be Deist or Atheist we must ad mit we do not know whether death ends all or whether it is but the en trance to a higher life than ours And In admitting this we take the Agnostics stand dont know So then all Deists Atheists and Agnos tics are Infidels So can Deists Athe- Ists and Infidels be Agnostics An a true Liberal will grant the Deist the privilege of building in his fancy a picture of an Ideal future life While tho Atheist can picture death to be the end of all and firmly ieves that It is but the beginning of endless dreamless sleep And both can feel the assurance that if there is a life beyond they will live it and if it is but the beginning of a fath omless sleep they will never know the difference So THE BEST LlfslE zor OIm rr r tBLUE GKASS BLADE u SHOELGONEOUT OFFASHIONCH- URCH COINC NOT ESSENTIAL By Josephine K Henry If the Y M C A la not successful In capturing nil the men In our country It will not be for lack of designs methods and attractions to do so Everything from a baseball club to a materialistic lecture is offered as a bait to young men to become men bers So strenuous is the effort to enlist them that the religious Idea has been almost eliminated until a young man can Induue In any pastime from IdcUing football to shaving and taking a bath without being warned that Is in danger of losing his soul Lec tures on worldly subjects are given beforo the members but it remained for tho Rev P W Clampett rector of Trinity Church San Francisco to tell tho Y M C A in a recent ture that The churches no longer teach a material hell Tho belief In a material hell does not square with the doctrino of an allwise and loving God And then this Reverend pro ceeds In the following manner Infidels tell us that the number of men who now take an interest In igious matters is less than in the last century This Is untrue Not everyman who does not go to church Is an enemy of religionu Many good pure true men do not attend church serv ices Huxley who spent a lifetime seeking the truth was not a member of any church Tyndall who spent ten years In analyzing a ray of light could not bring himself to accept all the teachings of the church but he was not therefore an enemy of the Christian religion I am not of those who believe that men who go to church are necessarily better than those who do not Only per cent of the men of our State are members of churches m mind there Is a fourfold reason for this The dissatisfaction with the past teachings of the church accounts in part for the dearth of men within its pale One of the earliest pictures I can recall Is that of a clergyman hanging over tho rail of a threedecker pulpit and painting a picture of a material hella place of perpetual punishment for evil doers so horrible that for weeks afterward my sleep was troubled with terrible nightmares Thank heaven tho doctrine of a ma terlal hell Is now no longer taught by our churches We no longer condemn- to everlasting punjshment all those who venture to disagree with us in religious ma era The belief a ma terlal hell does not square with the doctrine df an allwise and loving God rerl ill nir the part of men to ac cept socalled truths which their rea son rejects is another tiling that has kept men out of tho church It is not reason only but Divine faith which must lead us to the throne of God It is not reason to reject everything which our minds cannot comprehend We are surrounded by mysteries which our minds cannot fathom No man can prove why he lives and yet we know that we do live I would rather die ten thousand deaths than give up my belief in God and yet I cannot prove his existence- A third reason for rejecting the church is the alleged Inconsistency of those who profess to follow Its teach ings This 1 a most foolish conten tion There is no profession in which there are not systers but the exist ence of a thousand dishonest lawyers does not destroy the nobility of the calling or our faith in the law Let us be fair and judge the Christian faith by the man who truly follows its reason why tho men of our time do not attend divine worship- Is to be found in absolute indifferent Ism which prevails today and which strikes at the very root of life Barring the Throne of God bus ness in the above this sentiment seems more appropriate to bo vanced in a Freethouglit Congress than in a lecture before the Y M C A and if Rev Clampett succeeds In clamping it onto the trains of the Y M C A they will bring up In the camp of Rationalism in short order Young Men Cant Assimilate the horrors terrors and fairy tales upon which the Christian religion Is built so they are now tolling them In with worldly attractions telling them there is no hell and that men who go to church are no better than those who do are we drifting Is a per tinent question in the orthodox camp at present We cannot Read the swer In the stars but the echoes from pulpits Y M C As and Sun day schools prove the truth of Lin coins aphorism To fit the case or thodoxy can fool some of the people all the time and all the people some of the time but It cant fool all the people all the time The Rev Clampetts church the Episcopal is going with auto speed to Roman Catholicism but if he retains and preaches the above tenets he will almost unknown to himself sert the Kingdom of God and bring up In the Republic of Rationalism Surely Christianity Is receiving some dangerous wounds in the house of Its friends If there Is no sheol and those are just as good who do not go to church as those who do what Is the use of the expensive and inconsistent Christian system anyway Prove all things hold fast to that which is good That is one of the very best things in the Bible When the Rev Frederick W Clampett of San Francisco told tho Y Al C A of that city that there Is no material hell of fire and brimstone but that this Bible teaching is simply figura tive he stirred up a hornets nest The papers on the Pacific coast are opIniondeclaration If any class of people on this earth N Jj il 11 now right now heed divine aid It Isi the theologians and I earnestly hope that their Lord will come to their help in this extremity One of the unanswered questions since the days of Henry VIII has been What do Episcopalians believe There seems no prospect that It will be answered In tile near future as tho clergy give evidence In this Clampett case that they dont know what they believe They are rigi face to face now with the polned question Sheol or no Sheol I would use that little word beginning with the eighth letter of the alphabet but that is considered strictly a mascu line privilege Here la the way these Episcopalian preachers are fixing up this Sheol matter What a Bishop says ought to go If a Bishop dont know about Heaven and Sod what does ho know The press reports that Bishop More land sees nothing objectionable The Missionary Bishop of the DIo- cese of Sacramento says Dr Clam pett Is certainly at liberty to express whatever oplhoin he may see fit on the subject I see nothing objection able startling or unusual In his re marks I do not think they contain anything that should be the subject of adverse criticism The teachings of the church do not compel her lowers to entertain one view on this or any other subject neither does she preclude the holding of an opinion peculiar or individual on the subject of hell So ths Bishop says that the Episcopalians are not compelled to entertain one view on this cy any other subject The only thing they seem to agree on is that they call themselves mis erable sinners when on their knees In the sanctuary und proclaim themselves the sifted dust of the earth when they get outside the church door But even this docs not settle the Sheol controversy The following from Rev C L Mid rector of St Pauls Episcopal Church Sacramento Cal exhibits him in his spiritual ar mor ready to expunge materal hell from the Holy Bible even if It leaves a Bible of holes He says As to my own opinion concerning what I have called the popular Idea of a material hell at least it was the popular Idea until comparatively re cently I utterly repudiate these crude and ghastly travesties upon the love of God the father of the universe I arraign the popular idea of hell as merciless and brutal ignorance and impeach it as a hideous heartless lie against Christs universal and absolute redempton as a blasphemy against the eternal love of God Rev Hichman of St Bernardino Cal says It is probable that the poetry of Dante and Milton have done more to establish the popular Idea of hell than any statement of Holy Writ This Reverend seems to forget what Holy Writ says on this subject De part from me ye cursed into a lake of everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels and that the 39 articles and creed pay strict atten Lion to this subject Before the next white robed Rev erends express themselves it will be appropriate to rise and reverently sing Blest Be the Tie That Binds Believes In Real Hell The Rev Stephen Innes rector of the Church of St Mary the Virgin gave utterance to the following I most emphatically do not Indorse Dr Clampett He Is a very good preacher but he is no theologian Theologians know sat It has been taught from the beginning of time that there Is a ma tonal hell And the proof of it is found in the belief of the resurrection of the body The body Is not a spirit and cannot be reached or touched by anything spiritual but only by something as material as itself hence the need of a material hell to mete out justce to a resurrected or material bodyThis Is the belief of the Catholic church and as far as I understand it the belief of the Episcopalian- Dr Clampett belongs to a large class of teachers who attempt to min imize all hard doctrines so that they will tinkle in the ears of sinners They are like people who think they can ride to heaven in a palace car They place their feet upon the soft plush cushions they lean back to take a good long sleep and they give orders to the black porter by no means awaken uiem until they reach the portals of tho Golden City I am afraid that these easy going teachers and preachers stand In need of good hot experiences themselves before they will learn the true state of affairs on this subject The Rev Herbert Parrlsh of the Church of the Advent Is of the fol lowing opinion The spiritual is quite as real as the material If not more real To say that the materal Istlc ideas of hell are no longer taught is not to say that hell Is not a reality or that tho fact of a real hell Is not taught That there is a hell is the teaching of the Catholic Church But the church has never dogmatized on tho subject of gridirons- So we have the different prases of the subject The pictures In the press of Revs Innes and Parish look like they might be twin brothers of Ignatius Loyola and their talk would suggest the Idea that they had the scarlet letters S J beneath their vestments However this may be the two factions in the Episcopal Church represent Rational- Ism and Roman Catholicism Protestant pulpits are honeycombed with Rationalism It seems to spring up spontaneously and the destiny of the human race hangs upon the outcome of the coming conflict between Rome and Reason The doctrine of a material Hell has been taught for 2000 years It does seem that thisI Is sufficient time to prove anything but up to this time not only the exist ence of a heaven and hell is unsettled but Christianity has utterly failed toj prove any of its tenets from the sixI day creation theory to the resurrection of a Savior who came into thet world through an Immaculate Con ception It Is sheer audacity for men to sayI there Is or there Is not a hell The whole robed clergy know no more than an unborn Infant about either l heaven or hell and they know that they do not know Remove Hell from Christianity and the whole system will fall like a house of cards No Hell no scheme of salvation no Savior no preachers will be needed Proof of the existence of a material hell or any other kind would fotGrace and crowd into the New usalem It does seem that a God of Love would give this one demonstration that would at once save the whole world and relieve the clergy of the necessity of perjuring themselves The masses of Christians reject with anger tho Idea that there is no hell and they call their Gospel which says there Is Tidings of Great Joy- Harriet M Closz one of Americas greatest women voices the spirit of Rationalism in the following beautiful lines end some of the clergy seem to be imbibing it If I were sitting on a throne with power to rule the race As we are taught that Jesus does in some far distant place I would not stand aloof and say Believe and be baptized For only thus can heavens Joys by you be realized But I would say to all the world Ive made a great mistake In teaching faith Instead of works the futures peace to make Id go to work with hand and brain to right this Christian wrong And lift the heavy burdens off which have been borne so long Id help tile poor misguided race to brotherhood on earth And change the cries of agony to shouts of joyous mirth All fear of God and selfishness and hateful thought would flee If I but ruled the universe and could the Nations free So I would leave my high abode with human kind to dwell No more the songs of angels bright around Gods throne would swell The heaven of tradition would then vanish from the sight And justice reign supreme instead of ignorance and might This California controversy on the lurid subject of hell is a good aid to the cause of Freethought Let the good work go on Versailles Ky- WONDERFUL To Be Sold of BrIghts disease on tember 30 a few hours after his mission and without making a will or leaving any Instructions as to his funeral Ho was an aggressive speak er and writer against Christian su perstition an Athest of a pronounced type having no patience or sympathy with those who lived upon the credulity of the Ignorant and as a cot sequence had many enemies among the clergy Ho died as he lived with out God or hope of Immortality He has often stated publicly that he did not want any preacher to deliver any service over his remains and I de termined as far as it laid in my power that I would see that tho wishes my dead friend were respected and to that extent succeeded His remains were sent to his early home Sugar Run Pa He was a contributor to the Freethought magazine a Justice of about the Blade Magazine It will contain nothing except what has been or will be printed in the Blade and that you will have read first and that Is a pretty big argument against It Now here are the arguments for It It will cost only 50 cents a year half of what our other magazines cost It will be gotten up In as good style as any of them It will have three or four times as much as any of them and for Blade readersmeaning no disparagement to the other magazines It will bs very much more readable than any of them Then after It gets a subscription of 1000 it will make a little money for Mr Hughes but It will start as soon as we get 500 sub scribers no money asked until the Magazine Is ready If wo run the Magazine all the mat ter in the Blade will be held until all can see the articles in the Blade and we can put anything in pamphlet form tB8TleBlreTrfpr1ialf If of what we or anybody else could do otherwise and anything that anybody would want in pamphlet in almost any number large or small could be furnished at rates much lower than any other Infidel printing house In the world can do I am satisfied that one years experi ment would be so satisfactory that the friends of the Magazine would see It to be just as indispensable to their happiness and religious cravings as rte Blade is now With the Blade at the club rate 50 cents and the Magazine at 50 cents a year the two together would cost only onethird as much as other In fidel papers worth no more cost alone- I get nothing from the publication of the Blade but the satisfaction of seeing the triumph of the right and that Is all I would get from the Maga zine and while I do not like to beg even for that It seems to me that getting old as I am the friends of the Blade might risk 50 cents a year where they have means just to gratify that sentiment in me and there would of course be people who would read the Magazine who would not read the paperIf is thought best all that I write might be left out of the Magazine We have now only about sub scribers to the Magazine INVESTED IN MINING STOCKS Unfortunate Priest Said to Have Lost Cathedral Money Denver Sept 25The News to day says that Father Callahan pastor of the cathedral parish and In charge of the finances of the parish and the building of a new cathedral is short in his accounts to the amount of something like 20000 The entire amount of the cathedral fund 52000 has been Invested in mining stocks by Father Callahan according to the News and at least half of the total sum has been lost through deprecia tion of the stocks There is no pIcion that Father Callahan has profited personally from the affair It is believed that he began the speculation to increase the cathedral fund and seeing that he was losing has grad tally invested the entire amount of money in order to make good CommentIf I had lost tljat money priests would have said stole It Infidels gave the Blade 500 to buy a linotype that cost 3150 and they got the linotype
