kind note in which ho asks Mr Moore can you prove that there Is no God l and tonor of the note Is that of a man who Is honestly seeking in formation on tho subject- It Is ono of tho most important and ono of tho hardest of all questions to answer and whllo have for ninny years called myself an Atheist doubt If any fair and Intelligent man can answer that question satisfactorily either to others or to himself No cannot prove that there Is no God but that fact docs not at all go to prove that there is a God can not prove that did not muidor a man last night but that fact does not prove that did murder one It Is very difficult If It le possible at all to prove a negative Wo cannot provo that there aro not ghosts and spirits and angels and devils and witches but It Is impossible for any body to prove that thero Is such a thing as any ono of Uiese though the existence of all of these Is taught in Biblo and comparatively a few years ago nearly everybody believed in tho existence of all of them Now nobody believes In ghosts In plural number but a large majority of the people believe In one ghost that they call tho Holy Ghost and print its name with capital initials Nearly everybody believes In spin its and In angels now as much as they over did Nobody believes now In more than one devil and there Is h die vision of sentiment as to me existence nf JthaUpno deyjl though many people who are iiuollifcBii gtxacrai inauutr believe in that one deli allude to him revenUy and spell his name with a capital Initial Tho belief In witches has almost entirely disappeared but In ono mat ter In Kentucky and suppose elsewhere there are many good and Intel ligent people who believe In witches and have known several men who claimed to bo witches and got money for their services as witches Though the word witch Is now fem inine theso persons wore men who claimed to bo able to find water with a forked switch of hazel or preach tree In every community there are pro plo who do not at all believe In any other kind of witch but who earnestly believe In water witches and they consult these water witches If they aro going to dig for water This belief In water witches Is confined almost exclusively to old persons and they are growing fewer every year but know valuable peo ple who will become offended at you you ridicule their belief In water witches Comparatively a few years ago cer tainly within my memory nearly every hotly believed In a God like the ono described In the Bible and thon tho time came when a great ninny people like Abraham Lincoln did not believe In a Owl lute that ono In Bible but did believe In a God ot some kind and reverence him As It Is now think that an monso majority ot people and espec ially Intelligent people do not believe In a God like tho ono described In the Blblo Wo cannot prove that there Is no such God as tho ono tho Bible de scribes but nobody can prove that there Is any such God as that and there seems to be no reason to sup pose there Is any such Godf Is the ono described In the Bible and It is cast ly demonstrable that tho Bible that tells about that God is neither true nor approximately or mainly true Bible Is beyond any reasonable doubt a tissue of errors from start to finish errors many of which are from Ignorance and many from bigotry pre judice anti purpose of priests to make mosey by Imposing upon Uie credulity of Ignorant- So that In any Investigation or study of the question of tho existence of a God neither tho Christian Bible nor any Bible ot any of the other re ligions must for a moment bo con sidered In whole range of literary trill cism there is nothing any moro con t i elusively and definitely settled than that the Bible Is not true nut the existence of somo kind of a God Is a question that Is not by any means settled even In tho minds of fair and competent anti conscientious thinkers though It seems to me that tho trend on this subject Is to clime mate Idea of any kind of a God from tho universe Tho Idea of a personal God a God with hands and feet and body and eyes and ears and bowels as describe ed in tho Bible not to mention ono very delicate allusion that tho Bible makes to his personality has now com pletely gone from Uio minds of all competent thinkers and can never again take possession of high civiliza tion as was once true of It nut there are people of Integrity and attainments and of Intellectual force who say that there mutt be some In tellectual force who say that there must bo somo Intelligent originator and manager of the universe When we get the question reduced to as fine a point as this we must for the sake of persplrculty begin to be strictly accurate and scrupulous e and logical with each other and If we are trying to find out the facts wo must divest ourselves of any prepos session and try to get nothing but tho truth and not ho influenced by any desire to show our Intellectual prow ess by beating our opponents In argue dictionaries know nothing of any meaning of intelligence except such as emanates from a human brain and none of us can formulate any Idea of any kind of an Intelligence ox cept such as proceeds from human brain or from tho brain or ganglions of some material part of some animal hotly Then of course and beyond auy peradventuro we must just at once end foreor cease to speak of the universe as long governed by an in telligence We may Insist that In inanimate material there la sonWthlpfr that more or loss resembles Intelll ii t1t us ntmivLuii uiu jul lively must not say that tho universe is governed by an Intelligence Apart from all this It is undoubtedly true that according to the highest thorities as to what Is evidence ot presence of Intelligence the phenomena of the universe do not indicate the presence of intelligence 5 As soon as a man says that he if he had had supreme management of nature would not have made certain uatural phenomena thus and so cr that ho cannot understand why they are thus and so ho plainly states that In his judgment these things are not Intelligently managed because they are opposed to his intelligence- We will then take samples of these phenomena that are fresh on our minds and apply our tests to them Wo will take Mount Peleo erup lint and Galveston Hood two phenomena that are purely natural and against which we couhl not rows sonably expect human foresight to provide and Uicn we will take the Iro quois theater fire In which nature and human agency conspired to bring about the result Any titan who would say that ho would have managed these things just as they were if he hall unlimited control of the affairs of nature would bo regarded as a fool or a cruel and murderous brute by all right thinking people and consequently In his judge Vint these great calamities to hue manity and animals were nelUior In telligently nor kindly managed Now whether there is something back of tho origin and control of universe that to a greater or less ex tent corresponds with human intelli gence cannot know and I dont see how anybody Is to know and tho one ly practical conclusion that cv como to Is that wo should aVoId dog matism and severity in our judgments of each other when wo disagree on this point In the phenomena of nature see many things In vegetables and evon In minerals that seem to Indicate InIthose tho presence of something moro or less resembles intelligence In man but I cannot say whether this quasi Intelligence accounts for tho existence of universe and for Its continuation and comparative preser allan I am satisfied that there Is nothing controlling this universe Uiat cares any moro for grandest man or woman that over lived than It does for a clod of dirt In Uio Iroquois theater power Continued on Pago Four r fDEMOCRACY r BUT SKIN DEEPCOULD A LIB ERAL PRESIDENT BE ELECTED Mr Moores nlco llttlo compliment In the Dlado of February 27th Is appreciated but I am suro that ho overestimates mo and I doubt very much whether I would mako a good lUes dent and oven if I would pleaso Lib crals themselves I believe that nearly every man Imbued with patriotic Impulses feels now and then that ho would like to be president just for a short time Ho feels that he would at least press himself In no uncertain tenns upon some particular questions Tho office of president Is not nn easy ono In some particulars to fill Were president many Liberals would expect mo to take as radical a stand as I now do forgetting that men must bo led not dictated to that you cannot legislate them Into your way of I president I would find It Just as hard to satisfy Liberals as IiChristians In fact it Is just as hard r or even harder for a Republican o- rI Democratic President to satisfy his own party as It is to satisfy the oppo sltlon and so would it bo with a Liberal president The art of govern- mentT or politics consists as much In managing your friends as your ene mlcs While I am compelled to smile nt the proposal to put me In training for the presidency and no doubt many of you also have smiled at It knowing how futile and Insignificant would be the attempt of a Liberal campaign yet I am frank to say that would like to be president not from ambition not from vanity but slm ply to occupy a position through which I would be able to establish certain c precedentsIt probably cost me my life and am not axlous to step out of i my skin but there are times when a rr man should not consider his life when sduty commands I president I would start off cautiously I would be most consen tlvo I would want to study men j and government for a year and thus learn the lines acquire a confidence t In myself and become thorough adapted to tho situation No man should undertako trade tnaUhe nas not arned evunrU 71 meanest Yet nearly every man thinks himself sufficiently qualified for the hardest of all tradesgovern ment I should be modest therefore until I I felt that I was as smart as the smart ones Intriguing around me a Liberal I would expect to see an enemy In nearly every face and I lwould be one against the many Feeling sure of my position at last I would take an unalterable stand tor what seemed to me to be Just and Right knowing well that the masses t and posterity would give theso their approval Once having taken a stand the Intrigues might have their how The greatest curse resting upon tho presidency today Is the second term Tho president to succeed him self must begin his wire pulling and Intriguing bargaining and purchasing lying and scheming deceiving right from his very start the time devote to which scheming far exceeds that spent on duty announcfone in view as my successor I would then be free to accomplish my pur poses without official intrigue and b thus eliminating self my action could not be credited to persona gain I would stick close to the lette of tho law and if any class would protest I would tell them not to bother me but change Ute law If they dont like it But as long as It Is a law obey it Just as I do Consequently I would use all my Xuenco to effect complete separation of church and State There would a mighty howl of course but I would hold tho Constitution up to the masses and tell them if they do not f1I1w that article forbidding union of and State to change the stitution I would thus bring the attention of this article of the Constitution tc millions of people who have never read It and who do not know of Its existence and the people would be with What is wanted now is a little In dependent spunk in leadership Peo pie at heart do not like or trust grovellers and lawners and apologists Tike president who has tho grit to say his say who Is felt to be incor ruptible will soon have his admir ing faithful adherents Tho tendency of the age Is toward Liberalism and the fickle timid r masses stand ready to turn to Lib erallsm as soon as Liberalism as fearless leadership sumes a dauntless f As long as Christianity has a tool In tho presidential chair the timid masses will so Incline It ever a fearless Liberal gets In that chair It will astonish the world how tho masses will turn to Liberalism See the affect of the Liberal leadership of Italy and Gambettl In France The chaplain In the army and nav have to go if I could have my way Thanksgiving proclamations would cease Church taxation would be proposed In my messages and the reasons I should give for all such ion of course would be printed er where Everything the president would an would bo printed and some of Ule things I should say as president would bo mighty Interesting reading If should not succeed in carrying n single point I would at least ceed In educating the masses In tile law and as to their rights before the law and tho precedent I would establish In time would have the effect of leading the masses back to espect for the Constitution and waken the determination to uphold It Instead of going around over the ountry preaching to people to be moral and decent as Roosevelt foes I would preach to them the pur- Ity of the ballot and that it behooed ho laborer to send his represei Ives of labor to Congressthe mech Laic to send the mechanic and the farmer to send the farmer aaO the merchant to send the merchant and the manufacturer to send the manufacturer Instead of sending protes tonal politicians and millionaires The people as a rule do not Imow what Is to their interests and good hey do not know how to direct Islation They are easily deceived and landed The rich and powerful can eke caro of themselves would aim to get close to the people and be kind to them The man who came to tho Senate like Mark Hanna with the well pro- en charges against him of haYing bought his office or In any way corrupting the ballot would get no recognition from me I would not place hIm on any committee nor Inlite him to any state or social function I would make an example of every cor iptionlst of this kind and otherwise make propaganda against this awful crime which threatens the downfall of this nation I would oppose every appropriation and bond issue In which I suspected a steal I would expose every Imper listlc tenaDrnCY anjcilUHLr I would hit monopoly and the iring of markets hard at tho sam time I would defend capital A good rich man Is better than bad poor man I wish every one sessed at least of enough to feel himself independent I have no objec- tlon to riches fairly earned The leg Itlmate pursuit of money stimulate deavor and emulation and Is healthy The power of a nation rests upon Its wealth The happiness of the people upon just distribution of that wealth The mnn who does not endeavor to make- money Is not entitled to Its posses- slon The honest acquisition of a tune is a thing for any man to proud of I like to see people gro osperous and rich but what dont like to see Is the politic scheming and jobbery and the mono- polY which deprives the masses oyery opportunity to get rich Let every one have a fair show- ysa the man without a dollar as well as the man who has more than knows what to do with Dhl I would do a lot of thing w re I president The first thing would do would be to cut up a lot red tape I would go to market just as I do now I wouldnt have any tailed horses and a monkeydoodl coachman Id have an automobll and learn to run it myself BUt previous to taking the oath office would Insist that there be no Inauguration parade and ball or any ceremonies whatever smacking crowning a monarch I would wall or ride up to the Capitol alone appea before the Judges of the Suprem Court and take the oath of wU1Out kissing any book and making but a simple affirmation and make little speech that as High Clerk tho People and no ones Dictator 1Iaster I would perform my duties faithfully and do my best to keep the- other clerks at work and doing theirs fly one great aim all through would be to maintain tho simple principle at Democracy and oppose expose and exterminate all the secret and- malign Influences now constantly worlt to destroy it ever recognizing that in the government of men much- may be done by severity more by love but most of all by clear discernment and Impartial Justice whic- hpas no respect to persons and per- mlts no special privileges to classes seldom refer to myself In writings and I hope will be pardoned on this special occasion I have had purpose in thus outlining what would do were I president I claim that what I have hero said 1 represents tho true principal of ocracy and want to ask my renllers where Is there a man in the United States ambitious to be made IJresl dent would dare to make such prln clplcs known Where Is there a party outside at the Liberal which would nominate such a man or would permit him thur to express himself And yet all of them prate of ocracy Patriotism Free Speech and any man be elected Jn this country who was known to entertain such principles Nol Yet all classes pretend to believe In tho Constitution and tho Declara Lion and Equal Rights It only goes to show Democracy In this country only skin deep and that the great principle has yet to be contnded for and that it will require eternal vigilance upon the part of every pa trlot to maintain even tho little we other matter of a personal ture Mr Moore has been pleased to speak of me as a Thinker Like- wIse others occaslonaly pay me that high compliment While lap reciate It still I would not have anyone think that I think that I am n Thinker In the first place I lavent any time to think In the iecond Thinkers are very very rare ndlvlduals and I am not one of Ute arletles Tho Thinker into his nostrils and Ulat roman was mado of mans rib lob- ject to the tales of tho highest moi iln being covered deep with deluge water and about tho ark of Noah Only truth and the whole truth can probably OL to say but in this case I am going to try to be moderato and conserv Uye There are certainly many bad men Christians and Infidels but there arc good men among hour and appeal to the good Christian men and women to help me In this matter I am getting to be an old man and l great part of my life has been one of strife about religion but want to spend as much as possible of the balance whole matter and subject the New Testament to the same criticism- that they are giving tho Old Testa- mente It perfectly reasonable suppose that If the Old Testament has many and glaring errors In Kentucky The reason why each man shout not be allowed to have more than ono wife at time is so obvious thatI we aro not called upon to make the argument on the subject But Reed Smoot and Jo Smith have the first two wives and the latter five wlvos and with impunity make this iatement to the highest civil author Ity and the government can not con stonily punish them because the claim that their religion allows and they are Christians too and yoi cant stop it because the law of land grants religious liberty to tho law being generally construed mean that a man must have some Idnd of religion and that a man m matter how good his morals and cltl inshlps are can not come under the provisions of this lay unless he has some kind of a religion No Christian can consistently gc to Jo Smith Jr and tell him that he Is committing a sin in having five wives when Solomon the inspired writer of tho Bible and by the Bible clIed the wisest man that ever lived had 1000 wives and concubines and Abraham the father of the faithful hud two wives one white and one member of the Senate Committee in argument with Smith quoted from tho New Testament A bishop must bo tho husband of one wife- and Smith said that meant that bishop must have one wife und m- ahae as many moro as ho can get and- the report says tho committee laughed at the turn Smith gave It If an Infidel could bo shown hae two wives would bo sent the penitentiary with scarcely form of a trial or If I should meet- ono of those Mormon elders that reach In Kentucky and embrace or profess to embrace Mormonlsm nnll thou proceed to embrace two wives would go to tho penitentiary nil tI10 satire We have Jews living In LexIngton thnt are as exemplary citizens ns an living In tho town If one of those Jews should mnrr two women and offer ns his nuUiorl for doing so Uio fact that his Dlblo in which nil Christians believe aU thorlzcs polygamy he would be sent to penitentiary for taking his blble ns authority when there Is not a single line or word In the Now Testament that says or In any wa teachers that polygamy Is wrong Still Recd Smoot anti Jo Smith In Utah just as much a part of government as Kentucky Is can each have more than one wife and SmlUl a bishop says plainly to the Senatl Committee that he has children b them all and Intends to keen thew as his wives and they would not eel1 give me permission to have even two wives when they might do It wlUt perfect safely because I have not money enough to get another one have to be taken care of by the one have got Why Is this thus Simply because any and all religion is essentially II rational and any effort to practice It must produce disorder and absurd nnd Injustice The religion of Jo Smith has so won Its spurs In this country and ten to be such a power in this Innd that the Mormon Church has now to he treated with just as much can rautor as the Ephpal or Catholic Church and so far from Mol monism losing its grip It proposes to come to Louisville Ky and build a line temple there In which event Its religious services will be an rounced in the CourlerJournnl just like the balance of the churches And yet there are a million of us lying who can remember when a Cnmpbellite preacher named Shin Eligdon wrote the Mormon Bible to amuse himself ono winter ns he sald rod now Mormonism Is recognized b this government as one of the rell ions of the land all done right Ilere under our noses In the nineteen century and yet the whole Christian world say that tho Christian religion must be true else It never could hae rotten such a start though Chris danlty got Its start in one ot the most gnorant ages and most ignorant countries known to history Uls probable that tho New Test ncifr was not written unoki26 yoors after the death reap 4tg 0 Jesus and possible li it was not written until 1000 years after eath but for the sake of the argue sent we will admit that It was written sixty or seventy years after the oath of Jesus the very greatest age hat is claimed for It by any Chris Ian and that would not compare wlUt the evidence of the truth of Mormon- Ism that the Mormons could produc for tho truth of their religion In 1900 errs from nowITho Mormons could slimy from the ecords of the United States Govern rent which was at the time the most nllghtened government that the world had ever seen that in sixty ears after tine death of Jo Smlli Ule martyred founder of Mormonism when there were still living a lion people who recounted all abou the start of Mormonlsn and the kit Ing of Jo Smith the founder of tha religion the United States Senate the most learned body of men In Ute world discussed the truth of the Mormon religion and put It on record on their national archives that Ute Mormon religion was entitled to Jus as respectful a consideration as other religion in the world Still there Is nt n single Inlelll gent man or woman In the Unites States Mormon or anybody else who- does not know that Mormonism Is fale and a fraud pure and simple and yet he sees Mormonism making mpld headway right here in the high cst light of civilization and right the face of the Christian rellgon How then can any honest and In lllgent man claim that the existence of the Christian religion is any Idence whatever that It Is true DIVINE HEALER IS ARRESET- Belllngham Wash Feb 18E SmlUi claiming to bo a divine healer was arrested at Burlington
