I i BLUE GRASS BLADE I EDITFD BY A HEATHENti Qnarltcr I1 PRE8 OF GOOD MORALS PUBLISHED WEEKLY 100 A YEAR IN ADVANCE VOLUME XIII NUMBER 15 LEXINGTON KEN CKYISUNDAY JUNE 5 1904 100 A YEAR t i HALfsiZE WAS THE BLUE GRASS DLADE OF LAST WEEKPUBLISHHERWAS COpy The Blade of last wool appeared ly halt slzo becauso it did not have enough copy In time to print It Its usual sIzetho first time such a thing has over occurred In Its history- I have lately declined to print a good deal of which there was no ob section except that It was not as I thought sufficiently Interesting Generally I havo more oven of good matter than I can print and I havo thought It would probably bo best for tho paper If did not write so much of It and as it is a busy time of year for a farmer I have been so much en gaged In working on the farm that I have not had time to write and I thought I would glvo Blade readers and myself too a rest but tho main correspondents of tho paper seemed to quit at the same time So far as my farming duties and my domestic affairs are concerned I havo been as happy as I over was In my life possibly tho most soond I have appreciated more than over before in my lifo that among tho great errors that havo been inculcated and foster cd by tho Bible the cause of moro unhappiness than all the other bad books of the world combined is tho teaching of that unfortunate misers ble book that labor is a curse while It is true that labor and especially manual labor and moro especially such labor on a farm Is ono of the very greatest of blessings that human ity has ever known- I work ten or twelve hours a day seven days In the week and I have a fine appetite for every meal and sleep soundly all night and xot a part or this thud nave Hred ttffllfo nf hlghrollerI sat upon a high seat and drove the horses to a roller that rolled the plowed and harrowed ground preparing it for sowing and planting If some of the many poor rich peo plo who are suiciding wo1 stop and think about it long enough to como and see mo and let mo show tem and talk to them about It they would never suicide again People have gotten to think that no manor woman either can bo happy without irioney but its just Ike hang lug no trouble when you get used to It I was raised in affluence and have seen much of what is commonly called good time but I am happier now that I am poor than ever was be fore in my life I think that many people are get ting tired of mo and my style and I would gladly if others would furnish the copy for the paper retire from any partlclpancy In its writing simply editing what others write but when I have concluded to do this and my heart and brain are filled with plans to bury my thoughts and sorrows In working on the farm In trying to recuperate some little of what I have lost as an Infidel propagandist and to make ctir little homo still sweeter and it is right sweet now with Its birds and flowers and my wife and children all doing their best to bo good and useful then comes tho notlco Can only get out a half sheet this week on account of not having any copy and then then without oven time to read half sheet I have to write something for print and for my pains and pay I will get letters from Infidels who claim to be friends to the Blade toll tog me that they are tired of rending my same old threadbare things that I have been saying until they are worn to a frazzle reading them- I do not blame them altogether there is much truth In it but what can I do I do not suppose there Is a man In Dog Fennel precinct who has more to mako him truly and philosophically happy than I havo and generally am so but I often get so disheartened from the little sacrifice that anybody is willing to make for this paper that I would gladly give up writing at all for it If It was not that sometimes It scorns necessary for me to do so I am not losing faith in Infidelity as a theory I am certain wo are right In denouncing tho fraud of the Bible and tho Christian religion and the cler gy but Infidelity while It has not ho crimes that Christianity has sometimes seemed to mo to bo Insipidly negative and Inactive and I got tired of tho everlasting dingdong of Infidels saying In long columns what they be Novo and what they dont believe about God and superstitions that in telligent people have gotten tired of reading about and hearing about and which nobody but fools or knaves pre tofu to believe in A man wrote me some time in tho winter a great long string of hocuspocus about God that had so many long words In it that I could not understand it any moro than I could understand one of my own sermons when I was a preacher I read three or four pages of the twentyfive pages of tho stuff and threw It in the firelast winter was a tempting time to burn things Ho writes now that It had stamps In It for Its return if not printed- If It had tho whole business went up in smoke together and it will be a cold day when ho gets any stamps returned to him by me People who want to write those long winded things In winter ought to write about hell something that will warm you to think about At such times as last winter was In Kentucky Its awful to read about sitting on a damp cloud In heaven or sitting In the shade on the banks of tho river tho beautiful tho beautiful river that flows by tho throne of God bare footed and eating Ice cream and fan ning yourself with a palm leaf fan It seems to mo that common sense would suggest that every body should write about hell In the winter time and heaven In tho hot weather Once some Christian missionaries went to Greenland and told nil those fellows that they would go fire of hell If they were bad and all of them turned just as bad as they could he because they all wanted to go to hell to gt t warmII reckon that will do to film n som- eJhJf1ud I am so tlnfil and sleepy from running and cussing two or three hundred of our own chickens and guineas out of the garden and strawberry patch MINARYI From Woodford Versailles Sun Cairo Egypt April 23I havo paid my visit to Jerusalem the Holy City and I am glad that It Is behind me would not advise any ono to visit Jerusalem or any of the places in Pales tine simply for sight seeing They are only worth visiting for tho one who Is a student of Gods Word and to ono who is endeavoring to teach It to others Ono who Is a Christian has a desire to visit Jerusalem because of its as sociation with tho life and death of Jesus Christ and one who has seen It ought to be better qualified to under stand and to impart to others His teachings I must confess that what I saw lilt not impress me and did not demand from mo that reverence which I had expected Every place so covered up with tradition and IsI much of virtue Is attached to them that I was rather repelled than tracted recorded There to themIred In Palestine but what you can be shown the Identical spot and perhaps some object connected with It All you have to do is ask for what you want to see and you will be shown It For instance in the Church of tho Holy Sepulchre they will show you the exact spot where everything is connection with the crucifix took place and in this church they will show you alto the exact spot where Adam fras created and will also show you part of the dirt that was left after God had completed the First Man at Jericho I stopped at tho Grcplfidardws and than pr ptlslui had charge of our sleeping quarters showed us a sycamore tree which he claimed was the one which Zaccheus climbed In order to see the Master He had pictures of It and was desirous of selling one to us lIe could not speak English so one of my companions In a facetious way ask ed him if the ladder which was then standing against the tree was used by ZaccheusI not attempt to describe the places which I saw In Jerusalem but simply state that everything In con nection with tho death of Jesus from his agony In tho Garden to His as censlon Is duly marked and worship ed You will find Jerusalem In the way of cleanliness to be no Improvement over other Oriental cities It has just as narrow streets and Is as dirty as any best part of tho city Is the new part which is outside of tho walls Our U S Consul Mr Merrill lives at the Now Grand Hotel which Is on the Inside of wall near the Jaffa Gate We Attended a reception given by him to our delegates at this hotel and found it to bo a very nice one Mr Merrill was quite nice to us and spared no efforts to make our visit pleasantI think that in Jerusalem there are more beggars in proportion to its population than any other place on earth You are beset everywhere by the blind the cripple and lepers asking for Bncksheesh and you are compelled to turn a djeaf ear to every appeal for tho reason that If you as sist one all others will demand as sistance also It is also a place where people thrust their services upon you and demand for a very trivial service Backsheesh There were only a few accidents and that there were no more Is quite a miracle for the streets are very narrow with sidewalks that aro sornarrow that people prefer to use the streets The carriage drivers are most reckless VanDIne and Neidermeler were hanged In Chicago Tho evidence In the trial showed that these men had committed at least eight coldblooded murders There was no motive for any of the killings beyond the desire to get the money of victims except In the case of theI policemen and brakemen who were killed by the murderers while they were trying to escape capture Before they were hanged two of the murderers professed to be converted and talked about the confident hope they had that they would meet their friends In hea enIIt has been our observation In read Ing the accounts of hangings that at least nine out of ten of the murderers profess religion express full confi deuce In their final salvation before they are swung off Into the uncertain the other hand there was BobI ngersoll who was an unbeliever up to the last and on the theory that who sitter belcvcth not shall do ciamiieJ Bob we suppose oust be located In tho place of eternal torment If there Is such a place But whatever might be according to orthodox school Is surely In hell whlo the chances aro even and It their conver sion was genuine we suppose the theologian would say it is renonably sure that the murderers are now In 1 ADVANCING IN A SERMON BY REV MAXWELL SAVAGE IN THE SAN FRAN CISCO BULLETIN APPEARS THE FOLLOWING Agnosticism wo do not fear for honest doubt Is better than stri dent unproved assertions of orange fasoIcant know There Is nothing mankind cannot know if It keeps at It long enough there aro certain mysteries of the universe upon which we have no scientific proof as yet and before which wo say quietly I do not know yet All we nsk of the agnostic Is room to go ahead and discover Wo fool sure of theism ns against agnosticism and ntholsm Lotus work It out for we are free to do so In reasonable unbiased fashion As to church unity to merge ourselves for the sake of peace In orthodox Christianity would be to go back on our honor and principles which have been dearly fought for The orthodox are turning their point of view Wo would pay a shameful price If wo turned ours one inch Their whole system has for its keystone the fall of man Our point of n view is directly opposite We hold to evolution they hold to Genesis When they give that up then we c tns t Join them Not before Tho final theological battle will ho between theism and atheism for ag nostlclsm Is but a passing phase Either God exists or ho does nottOur point of view on all religions vr4 problems is special for as I said wo are eager for truth modern scientific truth And this aloncs abldolcopea r tvntitrottiwhich vex tho growth of real religion For truth cannot be antagonistic to pure religion Comment Those who havo for years been readers of the Blade will remember that have repeatedly said that In 25 years from the time of my writing the Christians would believe what we Infidels then believed and that Infidels would be believing something that wo could not then Imagine My policy up to date has In some respects been more than verified but In one respect has not been verified In less than twentyflvo years from tho timo I first said this the moro Intelligent Christians led by their preachers have come to believe just what the avowed Infidels now do But Infidels have made but little If any advance excepting pothaps that now nearly all Infidels are atheists Tho ono great advance that Infidels can and ought to make Is to thereto Syr r their energy and Intelligence to doing Is too true that we make too little sacrifice to show the natural fruits of our philosophy i As a more Intellectual struggle be Jftween Infidelity and Christianity the Infidels are already victors and J r tho church is simply resorting to nilfkinds of pondering to the prldo and 4 pleasure and bigotry of Christians to i get them to attend tho churches Now let us try still further to boat theichurch by trying to do goodlLITER- ARY 11t PREACHER Tho Kansas City Star tolls the storys t o of a church congregation that has ir J k t t SOOIALISM SHALL WE DISCUSS FUNDAMENTALS As tlioro scorns to bo quite a dis cussion as to tho propriety of admit Hug politics economics etc Into the lllmlo I hope that I too will bo per milted to say n few words mainly from the economic and evolutionary vlow point Hut before proceeding shall In Justice to myself first stato my views on lifes struggle To begin with will say that I am an Atheist by knowledge and belief and an Ag nestle by profession In explanation will say that am a firm believer In the law of cause and effect that makes me an Atheist but as to tho iJhows of things am forced to ad dont know hence tho seem k ing contradiction But to come hack ittowhat wo do know r So far then as wo know nothing ever camo to pass without a cause and the cause Is Just suVgclent noth Ing more nothing less bear that In mind It will then readily bo seen ithat no one can be responsible for his liar acts Therefore tho evolution L 11st says that man Is the creature of his environment plus that of his ante f cedents Looking at things In this light you will understand that I can r have no personal animus towards any Iiono but If it should appear otherwise you I must beg your Indulgence and hope that you will set it down to forco of habit as in spite of what have here said I still frequently find myself taking pride in doing or let ting alone things that others mayor may not do But to the subject matter in discus sloe We Infidels claim that we are thfe champions of liberty justice equal rights and opportunities etc but can we consistently lay claim to that while upholding a system of private ownership a system by the way which makes it impossible to put these high ideals into practice To illustrate Suppose that nero aro a hundred acres of land good bad and indifferent that some of us are going to settle on We will say that I In a position to pick my 20 acres or so first and as self preservatfon is it the first law of nature I am almost sure to take what I consider to be tho best Tho mere fact of my havj i Ing the choice will in Itself give the ftfeirs tot nj VT aurb ciiac tthat they would be wondering how It other hand suppose that we could all be there and draw lots forI It that would not better it any as all the property is not equally desirable Tho question then is Is justice equal rights and opportunities etc possible under a system of ownership that makes It possible for a few men own and control the things that ev erybody must have access to In order to going farther I would like ask a few questions relative to enl ronment etc First Why dont we plant lowers In a dark backyard Second Why Is vegetation scant In dry and rocky places and plentiful where tho soil Is good and moisture abundant Third Why do stock raisers bred only from tho best animals and under the most favorable conditions whet they expect good results Fourth Is a system that produces millionaires and paupers conducive to give to the growing generation that education that we claim is so essen that to free the humau mind from bondage of every description I have asked these questions believing that man Is no exception to tho general lawI dont think that it should be nec essary to hold long dcsqulsltlons on the evils of competition or the beauties of cooperation as a hint an idea ought to be sufficient to the Blade the Blade going Into other fields than purely religious discussion I think that it should be broad enough to cover the basic principles at least of the live issues of the day In fact I favor Dr Wilsons idea as regards the course that the Blade ought to pursue in that respect I recognize however that I am not the editor- I was surprised at D W Grohs ticle denouncing Socialism in a recent issue of tho Blade He says for in stance That the Socialists wants to give the government that the cor rupt politicians manipulating Ifstili more and more powerIn fact all that wo individuals have so that we shall loso our property and individ uality entirely and become the mere tools of these corrupt politicians called the State with no capital or power whatever to oppose them ho Socialists dont propose to do An thing of the kind Just the oppo site Is nearer the truth as the So cialists believe and not with out cause that If they give a man power ho is almost sure to abuse it j11 Therefore they propose to vest tho power In the people the people to ox press that power through tho use of tho Initiative Referendum mud tho Im perative Mandate This will not only Insure strict majority rule but It will also give tho greatest latitude consis tent therewith to tho minority ns by using the Initiative they will always bo ablo to serve a writ of hnheas pus ns It wore on tho majority and compel it to submit tho disputed quos lion to n referendum vote of tho whole people This being the case Mr Grohs statement that tho minority will bo entirely at the mercy of the majority cannot be true It Is true that tho Socialists want to take away the Incentive and the op portunity for what Is known as graft and consequently put a damper on our Individual propensities to prey on our fellowmen but they pro pose to foster tho true Individuality by setting every tub on its own bottom so to speak for It will bo obseny ed that although tho Socialists pose to do away with private owner ship In the things that everybody must have in order to live they very Insistent on ono thing and that Is that as labor creates nilall mind you wealth It alone is entitled to enjoy the use of It In other words tho laborer shall have tho equivalent ol the full product of his toll Mr Grohs other statement that Socialism courts tho church under tho name of Christian Socialism is I think likewise untrue I have heard Individuals calling themselves Chris tian Socialists but I havent heard of Christian Socialism The Socialist party has declared Its position towards tho church time and time again namely that tho party is strictly an economic one and that race creed color or sex Is no bar to membership In tho party so long as tho applicant subscribes to tho prin ciples of Socialism and Is otherwise fit to become a member As for changing human nature tho Socialists expect nothing of the kind except along evolutionary lines that Is by doing away with the causes that tend either directly or Indirectly to develop tho evil traits In our char wo remember that almost every transgression of the law can bo traced to the one little word gain the value of the Socialists position on this point will become apparent At least twothirds of the laws aro enacted to protect private property but suppose that every member of so ciety owned an undivided share in the lkrititf ofduu t have an unity of Interest you see and tile first law of our nature would irate to tho good of nil I can think of no evil that wo are suffering from today but could bo cured by a scientific arrangement of society In conclusion I will recommend the study of economics to every producer in the land the bread and butter ques ion Is after all the most Important If wo solve that question satisfactor ily then all the other things shall be added unto us Fraternally Yours 0 II STONE Baring Wash AnswerYou are a great Infidel atheist and till that but you failed to send along any money to help this little Infidel paper You will send your money to a Socialist paper and under the claim of being an Infidel will get mo to print an articlo that encourages your people to alto my land tho only property I have aid divide it up among you without pay ing mo for It for If you you get in your work for So cialism If you know anything about Social- Ism you know that theroe is not a Socialistic paper In tho wholo world that advocates Infidelity and you can not get tho editor are at heart just as much of a robber as a burglar or a train robber You have no moro right to come and and take my land then I have go and take your money It Is just such fool talk as you are doing that makes many people afraid of Infidelity and It is natural that they should be so You dont have to have access to my land In order that you may live any more than I have to have accoss to Rockefellers oil wells Baers coal mines or Morgans bank In order that may lIeIIf living by honest labor you will not havo so much time to think about getting your living by dividing up what somebody Just so lane nI soriTo Uen are stronger smarter injl ma- ingetic than others and lit paup tin will always of course he in favor of making the rich men divide out her property with tho paup Competition In all departments Is exactly what Is needed and thoro can bo no material prosperity without It There never was a more stupid oj Inaccurate statement than tho hobby of tho Socialist that labor creates all The men who have created most for the world wero not laborers but thinkers Inventors discoverers writers Edison was not a laborer and yet ho did moro for tho world than ten thousand mere laborers and gave pleasant and profitable employment to millions of people am surrounded by three multimil onalres and none of them were la borers Two of them spent years of their time In looking for copper editors havi to tho money that they get for tho wind Jamming that js producing strikes all tho time The declarations of the Socialistic party toward the church Is Just the same as the declarations of the Demo crats and Republicans towards tho archall pandering to church for its support What you say about gain Is sun ply unpardonnblesupidlty In any man of education Thero Is no sense In doing I take them from the Truth Seeker of April 4th 1904 handed to by Albert Johnson with the request that I give an opinion in the case Further facts with the law and constitutional provisions bearing on the matters In controversy I take from the same paper Wereln the Court says The basis of plaintiffs grievance Is that the dally repltltlon of Lords praper and the 23rd Psalm is a form of religious worship to which he and Vis son are conscientiously opposed that to con ct such exercises In the public School which are maintained at pub tlic expense and to the support of which plaintiff Is a taxpayer is com pelled to contribute Is a violation of section seven of the Bill of Rights which reads as follows The right to worship God according to dlc tates of conscience shall never be In fringed nor shall any person be com polled to attend or support any form of worship nor shall any control of or interference with the rights of con clenco be permitted And also a vie latlon of section article which reads No religious sect or sects shall ever control any part of tho common school or university funds of iia State And alsq that It Is prohib ited by section General Statutes of 1901 which is as follows No sec tarian or religious doctrine shall be taught or Inculcated In any public school of city but nothing in this section shall be construed to prohibit tho reading of the holy scriptures Court then says There can be no question of the correctness of tho legal premises of tho plaintiff Both our constitution and statutes prohibit all forms of religious wor ship or tho teaching of sectarian or religious doctrine In the public schools Section of tho Bill of Rights contains the following provis ion Nor shall any person be com polled to support any form of warship On this the Court comments as follows That Is no person shan bo compelled to pay tithes or taxes to secure or maintain a place whore any form of religious worship shall bo conducted nor shall any form of worship be conducted or any sectarian or religious doctrine be taught in anyplace supported by the Imposition o taxes Tho Court concludes by saying r 3lr Howovor there Is nothing In tho constitution which can ho construed na an Intention to oxoludo tho BillIe from tho public schools On a cursory examination of this airn thought thin Court was correct but on furthor reflection I havo changed my opinion Tho Court seemed to concede overy position taken by tho plaintiff and on this rendered a decision which I do not think Is sound law Tho plaintiff was a taxpayer ands such had n right to have his chll dren taught In n public school sup ported by a tax where no religious doctrine was taught or Inculcated and whero no form of religious worship was carried on It seems to me that the whole case turns on tho words no religious trine taught or inculcated and no form of religious worship carried on mostly on the two words religious of the General Stat utes above quoted excludes from such schools religious teachings and at the same time declares that noth- Ing In the section shall be construed- to prohibit tho reading of the holy scriptures which are defined to mean tho Old and New Testamentthe Bi bleThus by the terms of the section tho Bible may be read In the public schools It Is true as stated by the Court that there Is nothing In the constitution h e In direct terms which excludes the Bible from such schools But Is not the Bible arc ligious bosh devoted excluvely to re ligion and is not the reading of tho Bible the most and In fact the only direct way of teaching and Inculcat Ins Its doctrines Teach as defined s to Impart knowledge or Instruction to Instruct to communicate to How could this better bo done than by reading tho book Itself If reading the Bible In tho schools Is not de signed to Instruct what Is It read for It Is simply nonsense to say that the reading of the Bible In the schools s not Intended to teach Its religion- to the pupils As to word Incul eating used In connection with the word teaching Inculcate Is defined- to impress on to infuse Into the mind by frequent admonition In the case at bar this Blblo reading was repeated each day ground into the pupils mind every morning It seems to me that this statute is not only un constitutional but is self contradic tory The first part of the section prohibiting the teaching of religion htgattTrd E7heseeen d1ttwblch tacitly allows such religion to be taught by reading the Bible In tho this the worst feature In the case for oven allowing the section to be good law Its own provisions were violated In this case where the Bible was not read two devotional parts were selected and they alone were read each and every morning wen may the Legislature have taught that general reading of the Bible was Instructive and so allowed It to be read In tho schools but when the prayer and psalm alone are con tinuously read it becomes worship pure and simple This prayer and psalm printed In pamphlet form are often used by the churches not for instruction but in praise and adora ion of the Gods Tho dally reading of the prayer and psalm was never Intended other than a form of worship just what the con stitutional provisions were Intended to prohibit Such reading is in er sense of the word religious teach ings religious worship covered by the veil of Christian hypocrisy to thin to deceive any ono other than the Judges of the Kansas Supremo is Christian tactics In ambush ready to pounce on Its prey the ten der mind of the Infant It Is quite evident to my mind that the case was not duly considered by Supreme Court The concluding part of the opinion that because the Court did not find In the constitution In direct terms a provision shutting the Bible out of the public schools It could properly go there Is surface reading Even If the Bible could read e as the Court says In tho schools why dont they read It then Instead of selecting out two devotional parts of It and reading them and them on ly Tho decision Is not law It surface reasoning wen calculated to deceive one who Is not thoroughly read In fundamental principles of constitutions and constitutional laws PARISH B
