Preacher Has Mistrial the Jury Hanging Nine to Three In his Favor He is the Man Who Was Associated With the Liar ZacharyWho Is Now Associated With the Liar Wilkinson In x Publishing the Christian Quarterly The Paper that Wei Exposed by The Christian Standard of Cincinna- And Then Suppressed by the Go ernment The trial of Rev J H Baker tho Campbelllte preacher In Lexington resulted In a hung jury three being for conviction and nine for acqultal The Judge has not yet set the day upon which the nine jurymen are to bo hung hope It will be soon I am going to get a ticket to It when It Is pulled oft and report It In full for the Blade It will be an enjoyable Itothan to see Teddy inaugurated six times Teddy by tho way will be augurated dead sho one more time In four years from now It will one e by the Catholics being for him and a political party nameless In this paper being against him one push and tho other pull as It were the Catholics have got the pull on Teddy teethda since I was a newspaper reporter For real fine fun theres nothing except a camp meeting and a circus that can lay it over a hanging I am anticipating a great deal of solid hearWoit comfort at the coming hanging As they are to be hung tort being In aoreL preacher the execution n will ora religious nature and I would respectfully suggest to His Honor Judge Parker that It would bo eminently fitting to hang them In three bunches of three each out of respect to the doctrine of the trinity The three men that had the proper qualifications for jurymen were Col R H Fltzhugh have known him for 40 years and never knew him to anNd t pronounce It any more than a Russian Brothhthat I do not know or know about cept that in this Instance he was in good company I repeat hero what I have several times printed about old Col Fitzhugh he Is the only religious fanatic I over saw who Is a good man He will get down on his knees and pray to an Episcopal sky pilot just like an Irishman will pray to a plaster of Paris Virgin Mary but old Brother Fltz Is a good man for all that Brother Buck Is a straight out old he Infidel and is a good friend to thisI paper He is acknowledged by all society in Lexington to be the best in n the United States Baker Is to be tried again and It Is to be hoped that the next jury hang him instead of hanging himself but honest Injun I dont think Bakers robbing grown men like he did is one half as bad as robbing tool and children like all the other sky buster In town do But what Baker did to them was a plenty Baker ever baked themnot any half bake either He dont do things b halves He roasted cm Baker tour other fellows put In 50 each making a jackpot of 250 In a row monthsI believe three or rour those four follows drew out according to tho testimony more than 32000 dividends and more than 9000 In salariestotal over 4100000 and all they said to anybody was You put 100 and you can take qut 300 and fellows just rolled In their one dollars until tho four could hardly take In tart enough and tho fellows that paid In tho one dollar for three were no better than Baker who took their money One of tho men was a Dr Taylor sawbones not divinity ho was tried two years ago and sentenced to the penitentiary but has been In jail ever since Bakers attorney saved him by appealing to the Jury to pity a man 70 years old but Dakar had plenty of money and was a Campbelllte preach zt iI l fv dt 1 rikk cr and thats a combine thats hard to beat In Lexington Zachary was Bakers partner In pub lishing the Christian Quarterly and Zachary was running a three to one will hang Baker sail Zachary too THE KODACK SETTLES THE SCRIMMAGE Somebody or bodies unknown to phutvo e of the pictures of Eve represents her as looking at the snake while the snake has tho apple In his mouth and In another one Eve has done took the apple and looks sorter sffamed like The picture of God represents him with a lot of rays shooting out from his head and he has just finished the earth and hung It out to dry and Is Just fixing to make the stars also Speaking of hanging out to dry re minds me as Lincoln used to say I saw tho other day In a big tine magazine a picture called The first Monday There was a clothesline tied from one palm tree to another and hanging on the line were just two fig leaves If I would print that picture in the Blade this United States Court gang down at Louisville would just foreclose that penitentiary viction they have against me to printing obscene literature and send me to the penitentiary again The pictures of God and Eve Evelyn Is lots the best looking ts d nip and tuck between God and the snakehave evidently been taken from life and they are twice as natural as life and If Wilkinson the preacher liar I debated with In the Indian Territorygets one of those photographs of God I am afraid ho numu mo out sl10nuiu wo should ever get to orgerfylng about God again for I dont see how you are going to have a photograph of a thing unless there Is such a thing and If that fellow should send me a photograph of the Devil evidently taken from life I would get skeered and go preaching again The fine oil painting of God that I tell you about In Dog Fennel that Is at Bethlehem the principal place where Jesus was born his other birthplace being Nazareth and his blthday being all along out among those peoI pie from December 25 to January 10I looks a good deal like me except that It dont wear spectacles and cept that Gods nose Is redder thanI mine He not being a Prohibitionist and tho picture of God at Bethlehem has a suit of hair on him that shows up all right beside mine but the pic ture of God that some body is sending me now represents him as being as bald as a billiard ball orold Bob In gersoll It is I suppose because the picture of God at Bethlehem was taken whenj he was younger than he Is now but In the fix that tho old gentleman is In now I dont believe the Three ter Hair Restorative would do him a 1darned bit of good but the style of his hair Is all right for heaven because there Is no parting there warnt on the side of his right eye but like old Oliver Cromwell he didnt wan to hide anything and so ho told the fellow with tho kodack just to bang andwas a plenty God loops mighty bad though Ilooks like Abbott and Savage had mighty nigh knocked him outMIts cowardly In Abbott and MInot to both jump on one Philadelphia American of February 29 had come In my mall and In It I was reading an account of the great religious revival which seems now to be going on over a great part of the Christian country The North American is a tine large paper and I suppose Is fairly accurate In Its statements It says that there was just such a revival as this 33 years ago and say a these revivals occur in cycles of yearsa kind of tricycle at It were The figures represent the age of Jesus and are suggestive of the trinity but I reckon the cycle part of It is only another Instance of the common error of drawing general conclusions from too limited data It seems doubtless true however than an extraordinary religious ex citement has pervaded the cities though It seems not to have extended to any of us who live in the country I read In tho papers of special prayers being made by whole cities for certain men whose names are published papers If anybody has prayed for me I have not been Informed of It and in the absence of such Information I am not able to discover and change in my animus toward the Christian religion This revival has also been prevail Ing In Lexington and the papers r port that there have been many con versions No names are printed einglte any can do ington that does not get ones name andd I hardly ever go to Lexington any way and I just made up my mind that would not go into town to see about revival until I heard that Hon oses Kaufman or Judge Watt Par SaJm or C BachlgananI had Joined nd I thought In that event I woulr- go In and ask them how they felt and If they would advise me to try on and see If I could borrow 60 beIIroreconversion of any of that gang and I suppose that nothing short of something of that klnu wet arrest mo In my Godless career I have thous been arrested a good many times IIflcerthere Is only one whose name tonI heard I was one of my little hWT t rrf bor girls who Is going to school In Lexington She is not remarkable any way but has been a nice young girl up to this time and doubtless will continue to be She joined the Campbelllto church As I write this the Rev J II Baker of that church Is being tried for steal- Ing 500000 showing that In Lexington at least religion and morality do not make close connection In the North American there was a story of preachers who were telling what they thought about the great revival and theIamong Louisville there ought to be a manl fest charge for the better in the mor als of our country if Christianity Is a moralizing Institution While reasoning thus to myself I struck one that read as follows Tho Spirit of God Is among the people the Rev Dr B L Whitman said I find my church filled with peo pie unexpectedly at night and join with them In hymns and prayers There were twentynine conversions In my church on Sunday The agen cles of evil are at work the same as ever but the true Spirit of Christianity Is here and It is triumphant That as understood It says that the Spirit of God is among the peo pie and that the true Spirit of Christianity Is here and It is trlum phant but all the same the agen cles of evil are at work the same as ever and the fact that this Spirit of God is here among us and that the Spirit of Christianity is here and trl umphant is not expected to keep a preacher from stealing 500000 any more than If this Spirit of God and triumphant Spirit of Christianity had never gotten here The conclusion then seems to be that Christianity Js not expected toI moralize people but simply to keep them from going to hell which is said to bo an extremely unpleasant- n arn nml Irmtpnil of tit to ro to jjv which from all accounts Is delightful place to be and It Chris tianlty accomplishes this of course it meanIearly and a preacher Is around where you have any money you can justI watch your pocket book the same as you did before the great religious revival got here 3THE ROME BOOK I wish to Inform subscribers that work on the book Is progressing In that country had soured on me Wilkinson Is an awful liar Still I really dont think the man much to bo blamed Ho was born that way and then he is a preacher lawyer and editor of a roll gious paper beside Zachary devotes the last page of the Gospel Searchlight to me He must think I am the Gospel the paper says that Is what It Is searching for It has a two column cartoon or nile gory of me In which the Devil and an angel and I are a kind of a trinity but in the picture are the legends Editor Charles C Moore unmasked and Egotism Personified The picture is fairly good bu theologically heretical as it represents the angel as a woman and in all th wlble t o any ng oma e n caven Then there is Zacharys picture of himself I am betting on that picture getting into the rogues gallery Then there are three pictures yetI lying In the dump pile of printing office and the writing is oldI tended to bo done to suit the Instead of having pictures to suit writing as is done with more prosperous Moore In last issue of tho Blado I note you return to the images miraculously saved In that fireIt was a theato- d with a museum attached not a church roperthat occurred In Philadelphia over 20 years ago The fact is substantial It took place much as the Catholic editor said but with this very essential differ once That side of the building was standing practically intact after the fire and the dressed waxfigurcs stood in niches far about the main point of the fire and on that side where wind and draught were prevented from carrying the heat I saw them there several times as I passed up Chestnut street above Sixth street anti every one agreed with me that very natural causes clearly explained tho result There was another black eyo admin istered to the faithful when they came to take the walls and those figures down The contract was let to a Catholic and judging by the rich brogue of his men those figures carefully handled In taking them down but nevertheless everyone was broken and entirely ruined in the moving The matter carries little weight one way or the other but get that Catholic editor to tell you where those Images are nowE MURRAY AARON I say that preachers and people who write to me I am going to follow up this Catholic editor of Baltimore until I prove him just as big a liar as Zachary or Wilkinson or Rucker puar tie mind I ever hadbut some dam fellow wrote from Philadelphia to a Chicago paper giving an account of a religious miracle that had occurred in Philadelphia about 20 years ago He said that a church had burned down and destroyed everything In It except some wax figures of the Holy Family Joseph and Mary and young H C and that though Iron pipes right close to this Beeswax family had twistedand I think melted from the heat it was a fact that nelth Mr Beeswax nor Mrs Beeswax nor young Beeswax were in the least damaged He stated that this fact was witnessed by thousands of people and that finally the family of the Bees waxes was taken down and preserved and could be seen in Philadelphia at 1the day he wrote Somebody sent me the Clipping from the Chicago paper and I printed it in full and said in my comment that It was a He possl In more and that editor said that what the fellow had said to the Chicago poI edY1get seelan prenspry on but a religious edl tor Is as big a liar as a preacher I asked through the Blade for some lone March 05IDear Mr Moore I enclose part of an old Catholic pai perIn looking over it I see the Wanderer finds that statementss in cate chisms etc are not correct as regards the sepulcher at least You have been there and will know which is correct- It is Just as likely that Protestants or any other cult who allow others to do their thinking may bo mistaken GEORGE O ROBERTSON The account In the old copy of The Catholic Columbian on which there is no date except Saturday March written by Wanderer is quite occur ate except the most important thing in f the whole piece the place of the Holy Sepulcher and in that matter Wanderer seems to be mistaken k like nearly every body else that goes w to Jerusalem I give you the whole o- rt gument fully and plainly in Dog Fennel and that book even if I did write It Is the greatest contribution er AmtMark Twain for Instance In Inno cents Abroad gives an account of the tomb of Jesus representing it as being In the church of tho Holy Sepulcher Tho idea of the tomb of Jesus being In that place is just as preposterous as to say that the body of George Washington lies under the monument that has the statute of John C Brecklnrldge on It on Chcapslde In Lexington have never read a page in Innocents Abroad since its first appear recolllectlonlion Mark Twain never saw ever heard of while he was In Jerl usalem the real place where Jesus was buried I tried to read in the last year so John W McGarveys book on Pal estine but It is so chock full of silly religious rot that could not read any of it but I doubt if ho ever when he was In Jerusalem saw the real place where Jesus was buried There were 408 in the party with which I went having every advantage jt that anybody could have and I only know of about six that went along iiwith me who even saw the garden in i which Jesus was burled and they were occupied nearly all the time in buy I Ing flower seeds in It and I went up L on the top of Calvary the real place rwhero Jesus was crucified no one b l1 as Iyt ll yonill x eraealealoalysee thetomb lhatUie- f6 varieties of Catholics have inside s a church so as to collect money for seeing it and anybody of commonsense who knows anything about the New Testament can see that absur dity of calling the place In the Holy t Sepulcher the tomb of Jesus and so they come away from there under the e impression that there Is no foundation n for the story of the crucifixion and burial of Jesus in or near Jerusalem Whoever wrote the story In the New Testament about the angel set ting on the stone that had been roll ed away from the sepulcheras I tell you in Dog Fennelhad seen the stone at the tomb of the Kings of Israel and had not seen the grave where Jesus was really burled and in telling the lie about the angel sitting on It had made the absurdity of supposing the rolling stone at the grave of Jesus was like the rolling stone at tho door of the tomb of the Kings door of Israel That Is fully explained in Dog Fennel But there is outside the walls of Jerusalem not inside as the church of the Holy Sepulcher Is tho Mount Calvary and the garden and the tomb all perfectly coinciding with the ac count in the New Testament and there Is hardly a reasonable doubt that a man corresponding largely with the man Jesus of Nazareth In the iiiNew Testament was crucified on that little Mount Calvary and was burled r in that tomb Into which I went in the garden near the foot of that little mountain but no rational man is go ing to believe all the marvelous store lea about Jesus in the Now Testament simply because wo can find his tomb there now any more than he would a believe all the marvelous stories about Samson because we see Sam sons tomb In that country now or be aboutgRomulus and Remus because theirr tomb is seen out on the Appian Way t near Rome No reasonable man can doubt that there was such a man as Mohammed and the Mohammedans worship him in Jerusalem today just as the Christians worship Christ and nearly all the people of that country worship Mohammed and yet nobody but a fool would believe the marvelous stories that are told about Mohammed and nobody but a fool would believe the marvelous stories told about Jes us That Jesus lived seems probable rkL though not so well attested as that Mohammed lived but the miracles of Mohammed are quite as well attested as the miracles of Jesus and in 600 years from now the miracles of Joe Smith and Dowie may be better attested than either the miracles of Jesus or Mohammed WASHINGTON CITY MAN Washington D C Feb 28 05 Dear Bro MooreI lied to you in my last letter by telling you I would have some subscribers for the D G by the last of the month but as I gained two more by holding off I guess you can forgive a little lie like thatcant you Its not quite as bad a lie as a preacher recently told on Tom Paine He said Paine went to Switzerland to preach against God but was so much impressed with their simple Christlike life there that he built a Christian church and I said that preachers was the biggest liars that ever walked on shoe leather unless you know some skypilot who Is a worse one Wilkinson Editor My sister who is a good woman and forofgood morals J W UDLOW I give two extracts from the proceedings of that preachers meeting One is as follows Dr McKIm Speaks toMcKlm made the opening ad It Ptnl2g g thoseihat h ofthe weetl io8iated that while tho State and church should remain separate the state and religion should not It was the duty of the State to teach religion in the schools else the state had no right to teach morals In the courts Morals were based on religion and the state had no right to convict persons of theft if it had not taught the Commandment Thou shalt not steal He thought the state should see to it first that the Ten Commandments were taught In the schools second that text books on religion were Intro duced and third that the Bible was made a basis of religious teaching in general He then offered a series of resolutions which he had had printed and moved that they be adopted H state that the resolutions were all founded on his remarks It was over these resolutions that the contention arose among the various sects am creeds The other Is as follows Mr W W Prescott thought such a movement would result In trampling on rights of conscience which was a matter of liberty to a majority as well ns a majority body He said even the agnostic believes and has his rights No man or woman can bo a good citizen or good man or woman with out opposing the Christian religion The men who did most to found thjs government were George Washing ton Tom Paine Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin At the time they founded It they were all Infidels The most Inferior man of the four was George Washington In his old days ho became a kind of a halfbaked Christian of the Episcopal brand George Washington hated George III and wanted to bo free from Eng land but If George WashlngCon had had a son and had not been controlled by the Infidels Franklin Paine and Jefferson he would have been In America what Oliver Cromwell was in England a King starting a dynasty with himself These Infidels founded the government of the United States with the separation of church and State as their main motive The greatest president who has lived since their day was tho Infidel Lincoln assassinated by a Christian No intelligent person can fall to see how tho preacher villain McKIm Is try by tho sophistry and claptrap of his graft to beat the separation of church and state In this country while pretending to uphold that doctrine No Christian can be a loyal citizen t r t of this government because tho Now Testament tells all Christians Honor the King I Peter 1117 and no Christian can intelligently and hone cstly be a citizen of any democratic or republican government McKIm is a more dangerous citizen than Herr Most or John Turner The latter two are rattlesnkaes that give the alarm before they strike telling that they are anarchists byI McKIm Is tho copperhead snake this grass that crawls up on you strikes without warning The insolence of a fool like Prescott is such that he richly ueserves to be kicked The Idea of an unknown scrub like he Is who would probably hardly rank with McGarvey of Lex- Ington saying of such a man aq Haeck el that even ho believes and has his rightsINobody ever card of Prescott but filled with the insolence and brazen impudence of the Christian religion the cheeky fool says of such men as Lincoln and Ingersoll that even they believe and have their rights when Ingersoll all by his loney took Gladstone and Black and Field all at once and laid them across his knee and spanked them and lae comment of an unknown scrub like Prescott Is that even such a man as Ingersoll believed and had his rights The real spirit of our American government and the real spirit of the Christian religion cannot exist upon the same soil at the same time If we arc to remain political freeman the monarchical spirit of King Jesus and tho Kingdom of Heaven must be driven from this land WILKINSON MOORE DEBATE Heard it all and Was Satisfied With The Way You Conducted the Same expired That man when he faced the awful issue of death said I am going to Hell I do not want to die that way U th4ellppingI send you the dying statements J M 1 ir J t of two of your brethren Infidels canto make sport of God for a while but they must die and be judged for their bad IIvesJ H HILE In the old times when wo had no way of rapidly sending the news It was It was common for preachers to tell stories like those two In their pulpits and I can remember when It was common for preachers to tell long strings of lies in their pulpits about the horrors of Infidel deathbed scenes but in these days when the truth of statements of that kind can be tested in an hour we never hear any stories of that kind in tho pulpit and now deaths of Infidels are cdmmonly reo ported in the papers and so far from hearing that they die miserably they die calmly and philosophically among the beautiful of death scenes on rcc ord being that of Ingersoll I was baptized when I was years of ageducking processby n Camp belllte preachers named RIcketts heard old RIcketts whose name exact ly fitted ifs rickety shackling old body give In the pulpit an account of an Infidel deathbed scene In Paris Kyplace where tho preachers and distillers put mo in jail about 17 miles from my home Old Rickettswith legs and arms like cricketstold of a young man In Paris Kentucky who was an Infidel and a splendid orator RIcketts said the young man was making a political speech standing up on a goods box The old cock said that when the young fellow had fin Ishcd his splendid speech and went to get down oft the goods box he ran a splinter under his finger nail and died with lock Jaw exclaiming I am going to hellI am going to hell and from old Rlcketts dlscrlptlon the young fellow seemed to be hellbent on going to hell though his friends tried to reason him out of the Idea I was a boy and did not then know that no one having lockjaw could talk and old RIcketts never gave tho name of the young man or any more clue to his Identity than I have given here whenYers are began to Investigate about the young lockjaw orator in Paris and asked various persons there then and since then Including Col John Craddock who lived there and who was known tho Nester of Kentucky journalism and I have never been able to get any clue to the young man who went to hell from Paris by the splinter route and I am satisfied that old Rickelts wi lot of us young fool boys no 1he ekeImeer a skypilot and then all tho other rack ets made by old Rickets and now I am certain that the whole story about the young fellow and tho splinter was just a lie gotten up out of whole cloth to skeer me and a lot of boys that I would probably Influence Into the church because I was rich Old RIcketts has been dead a longtime but if he is in hell there Is one thing the Devil has never done fry 1the fat out of RIcketts Ho didnt have enough fat on hint to grease an aver 1age corn on your toe That old fellow Hllo would be happy as a
