men in the learned professions several members of the other sex have risen to prominence and fame Many engage in a struggle they did not anticipate and but few succeed in reaching the heights The stone is true in art in literature in law and in medicine Esther Van Riper M D of Circleville Ohio seems to be one woman whom Mother Nature has especially en dowed for the medical profession as she has practiced in it with unusual success and her name und fame have gone far and wide Site possesses very fortunately those physical mental mil moralattributes together with the minor graces essential to the making ofI successful practicing physician For years she has been nn out spoken and avowed Freethinker made so by her studies not from choice but from necessity No other course was open to her but to reject the childish and absurd fables of theology in general and Christianity in particular Dr Van Riper was tarn in Lodi Washtcnaw County Michigan and is a daughter of Edmund Gmd Lucinda Isbell Rogers both natives of the State of Now York Her paternal grandfather was a native of England who clime to America at a very early late lint settled in Orange County New York His wife was a Mis i Martha E Gallez being of Irish blood an Iit descendant ofa good fancily On the Rogers side of the Doctors family she traces her ancestry back to the English aristocracy and to Lord Rogers The Doctors father was a graduate of the West Point military academy and also attended the University at Ann Arbor Michigan Dr Van Riper or as we may designate her at this period Esther A Rogers was married to Dr M II Van Riper of New York he being of Dutch and Welsh extrac tion His father John Van Riper acquired high promi nence as an attorney at Albany New York The Doctor herself was educated in New York and studied medicine at the now world famous Bellevue Medical College Later she took further medical studies at the Ann Arbor University graduating with high honors Soon after her marriage she with her husband moved to Kankakec Illinois where her husband practiced his profusion and the young wife not only aided him in his professional work but con tinued her studies under him and for a periodof eight years she wrote medical and surgical lectures for him and from him By these means and through these opportuni ties she became exceedingly proficient and was finally registered and admitted to the practice of medicine in Illinois Site afterwards moved to Circleville Ohio where site began to practice under her own name andre maining in the last named city over since site has been eminently successful establishing a largo and lucrative children were born of this union sons and being left a widow these have been the life and light and hope of their mother The sons are Myron E Garrett Aand Marquis do Lafayette Van Riper These sons became prominent and proficient in the business world a credit to themselves to the community and to their fond parents Since residing in Union Membership in Northern Indiana Medical Association Membership in Southern Michigan Medical Association Diploma from American College of Science of Philadelphia Diploma from Electro ediclIl Institute Columbus Ohio Member ship in American Association of Physicians and Surgeons Water Valley Ark Diploma from Jacksonian Optical College of Jackson Mich andothers So far as her heterodoxy is concerned nothing further could be needed in demonstration thereof than the fact that she became It valued member of the defunct American Secular Union is now a member of the Ingersoll Memorial Association and of tho Social Order of United Liberals at Portland Oregon From time to time as her means would permit she has not hesitated to contribute freely to tho cause of Freethought and several articles from her have appeared in the American Freethought 1nblieutionst She has never sought to conceal her feelings for the ortho lox church and its teachings but in season and out of season she has invariably let tho people know whichside sho was on in this great contest for mental liberty Thomas Paine became her ideal of intellectual manhood and we all know what that means for orthodoxy Dr Van Riper was the first woman to join the Paino Memorial Association and gave in her name for membership to Secretary Elliott at a Paine meeting at Now Rochelle Now York BLUE GRASS BLADE S I r Ringing Reply to a Preacher One Who Heard Him Delivers a Few Broadsides Into the Old Hulk of the able and Theology 1T C Jefferies Rev T Russell Brooklyn and Plttsburg Dear Sir I was among the number who heard you at the Hippodrome In this city on the subject Where Are the Dead and I was Interested In your words nltho I do not understand everything you say For Instance you Instruct your hearers to let the present gofo never mind It and add that It Is the future that most vitally concerns everyone In other words wo are toabandon tlie substance for the shaft ow Is it not inoro sensible to tell us to live right today and tile future will take care of Itself Why not let tlie NOW have our undivided attention Why go without all happiness and contentment now as you request In the vain hope of infinite happi ness in the hereafter You say you accept and believe the whole Bible from Genesis to Revelations and In telling us where are the dead you say they are in the ground and that they will stay there until Christs second coming still then be judged tub good ones to thereafter live and rule the world with Jesus and bad ones will be destroyed they will meet a second death Well for mine T think one death quite enoUgh especially in view of the fact that i have but one birth and one life to my cred it Tho bad will be destroyed but none will suffer eternal punishment in a hell of fire is what you tell us They will bo destroyed and not tortured in any hell for there Is no hell hell Is a myth that has como down to us from the dark ages from the semicivilized past and you add that No where is the doctrine of hell taught In th- eDlblnthat book which you so unquali fiedly and wholly accept I agree with you that the Idea of hell came down from the barbarous past and by tho same method of tiguring It must necessarily follow that the rest of the Bible came down to us from an equally barbarous and dark past This idea of hell is most repulsive But you seem to bo very Incon sistent In accepting and believing the whole Bible and at tho same time denying Its teachings and tho fundamental teachings of the churches which are founded on the Bible I am afraid you strayed from the righteous path when you said that tho doe trlno of hell was not taught In tho Bible t this be true how do you explain such passages a bo following Rev 2010 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where tie beast and the false prophet are ana shall be tormented day and night forever and ever Why torment the oevll whom god created lor doing that which he did and td that which god created him to do His role was to deceive according to your bible and then for doing what was expected of him he Is to be thus treated He don t de serve it And the ueast will be handled In like manner probably for being a beast Serves the beast right for being a beast However life is no doubt as sweet to the beasts as to the human family but because the beast is of a lower order of animal life than man the latter consigns Mm to the pit But that doesnt matter nnywny as long as mans joking with himself dont hurt the oaast But it shows no good will toward the beast and In tne light of such things as this we can easily see why so many Christians are so inhuman in their treatment of animals Well you accept the Bible and all there Is contained In It from Genesis to Revela tions Rev 2010 shows that there Is a lake of fire and brimstone where eternal punishment will be conducted for somebody at least So it Isnt altogeth3r so ludicrous as you seemed to think this Idea of hell that Christianity has gained Rev 21S says the fearful and unbeliev ing the abominable murderers and whore mongers ahd sorcerers and Idolators and all liars shall have their part fit the lake which burneth with lire and brimstone- So the devil and the beast are not the only ones who will enjoy this lire Rev 1411 And the smoke of their tor ment nscenduth up forever and ever and they have no rest uay nor night Matthew substitutes a furnace for a lake of fire Mark IX 4341 And if thy right hand offend the cut It off it is hotter for thee to enter into life maimed than having two hands to go Into hell Into tho Ire that rev er shall be quenched where tho worm dicta not and the lire is not quenched And if thy foot offend thee cut it off it Is better lor thee to enter alt into life than having two feet to be cast into nell Into the lire that never shall be quenched where their worm dleth not mid the flire Is not quenched And If thine eye offend thee pluck it out it Is better for thee to enter Into the king IA l III dom of god with one eye than having two eyes to be cast Into hell fire wher their worm dleth not and the fire is not quenched If as you say you believe and accept the entire Bible and you also deny the doc trine of a hell of eternal torment as taught therein you may have explanations or apologi-es for such passages as these whidn teach to the Ignorant the Idea of eternal punlsibment The dark ages which you refer to have no monopoly of Ignorance or imagination Your denial of the doctrine of hell Is bully but how can you deny what you unequivocably accept Where are the dead The agnostics say We do not know but this reply you hold up to ridicule and say it is satisfactory to neither heao nor heart Why is It not more truthful and more sensible to say that we dont know than to tell a He and say we do know for nothing is more certain than that anyone who says he knows where the dead are is either a fool or a liar You say John Calvin was a saint but If heaven Is to be peopled wh ch heartless murderers as this man Calvin most decent people will very much prefer to go to hell If this criminal Calvin was simply mistaken as you say then wRy ddnt his goal awaken him and have him take a san and sober view of conditions as they really existed Here was a good opportunity for divine In terference and also an opportunity to make good But all the records of Christianity show that a numan life Is vaud at less than nothing by the god the Chris cans have matte It Is doubtful f enough principle could have been found In John Calvin to make a decent code of ethics for the aver age professional burglar When you tell us that it Is the doctrine ot hell that is rapidly making Infidels you como dangerously near th lulls eye say the doctrine of hell together with tho advance MANS ORIGIN AND DESTINY IDEA PERSONABLE GOD UNTENABLE IF WE AIILY REASON AND LOGIC TILE GOLDEN RULE DISCUSSED By Dr A Hausman But what about the higher regard of individual life and freedom Wo see that in all European states with the exception of Russia and the Orient personal liberty and dignity has greatly increased The peasant is no longer a slave who could bo robbed and maltreated oy the nobleman as in tho good old times the king has no power over the life and property of his subjects except as commander of the army tho soldier is treated as a human being and last but not least tho church is deprived of its civil power It is true that even in Germany the church is not separated from the state and tho liberals are thus compelled to con tribute to the maintenance of that despised institution but nobody is compelled any longer to attend service or to sub mit to any of the religious rites Marriage and baptism aro civil acts and no longer is tho consent of the church required for a decent burial People can tell their own opinion about tho world without fear of being denounced by tho clergy and tried in court for heresy and blasphemy By divesting tho church of its civil power and according equal rights to all denominations tho state liar practically admitted that they aro worthless As long as a religious devotee believes his creed tho only true one ho jl dangerous but as soon as he admits that other people have the same right that he has to form their own ideas about things he becomes harmless because a creed confined to the believer can injure no one but the owner himself This is personal liberty the privilege of every man to form and express his 4own opinion without any reserve and to act accordingly long as ho does not interfere with the same right claimed by his fellowcitizen Wo find tho church always hostile to personal liberty and far from being tho cause of liberty and progress every concession in this respect has been wrenched from the church by force by those who had freed them selves from the fetters in which religion holds the mind There is no political or social progress which has been introduced by tho church and there is none which hns not been opposed by tho church As impossible iu it is to detect any beneficial influence of Christianity in history just as impossible is it to find any connection between it and tho progress in our time I wish ono of tho socalled ministers of tho Lord who deal in that article would point out what mankind owes to religion If thev claim that tho tenets of tho Christian or any other religion worn noc cssary to maintain morals and virtue they might know if they wore honest enough to look for tho truth that yneha statement is a plain lie in the face of historical and contemporaneous facts The heathen did not require Christ ianity to be virtuous hundreds of years before Christ and the infidels do not require it nineteen hundred years after ChristBefore we proceed to trace the original animal instincts in our complex social relations it seems desirable to estab lish some sort of moral standard A comparison of the religious tenets and the natural code of law will clearly demonstrate the moral foundation of society CHAPTER VIII NATURAL AND UNNATURAL DIVINE MORAL LAWS Tin FALSE AND TRUE IN CHRISTIANITY LIIJERTY CONSCIENCE A MORAL LAW VOLITION A mathematical rule is true when it can be always ap pliedwith the same result and so is a scientific theory if it applies to all cases without exception In the conformity of the natural theory of descent with all tho known facts and in its applicability to all the biological phenomena without exception we see a confirmation of its truth We find thousands of religions and all of them have for a basis the same natural instincts which proves tho univer sality of the cause and the falseness of every additional belief for which there exists no material substratum Religion represents a phase a stage in tho evolution of the human intellect in regard to his relations to nature Out of the fetich of tho savage grew tho Christian God The godof a people is always the true image of its churacIter only intensified in its vile features The Moodthirsty barbarians leave gods rejoicing in human sacrifice the fiendish Christians huda god who delighted in eternal burning and torturing The Christians of today have a godaccording to their intellect Among tho ignorant Catholics ho is still tho same monster as at time of tho Inquisition among tho educated classes he has improved somewhat But the fact is the same withalltliey do not know tiny thing about their god they simply use that name for the unknown natural forces beyond human con ception but instead of honestly admitting the limitations of our intellect they vest tho sublime incomprehensible powers in tho low mortal clay and endow them withvulgar human passions And this gross material mockery they call divine spiritual worship Line imputation of tho hu man design and purpose in tho immutable eternal action of tho universal forces is the great lie of religion Ifu theist who pretends to believe in a god ho does not know claims there must bo such a person to create tho world wo call answer Then thorn must have been sonic one else a t b Pl 6 BLUE GRASS BLADE prior power to create the god But god is eternal why not tell the truth and say nature is eternal We know only this one cnuseXaturemul nothing beyond before or after We found as the basis of all religious fear fear of the unknown elements in nature This fear became useful in the struggle of existence for sonic and detrimental for others Those possessing greater mental courage took advantage of the weaker minded made then subject to their interest and lived on the fruit of their labor From time to time an attempt was made by some people to throw oil this yoke but for a long time these endeavors were unsuc cessful and the originators were mercilessly persecuted by those whose material interest was in danger and by those whose fanaticism and ignorance upheld the church At last the opposition was strong enough to break the power of the church and secure liberty of thought as we enjoy it now There is no more compulsion for the body to wor ship a monster or idol the mind could never be compelled Conviction by force is impossible the mind only yields to the irresistible logic of facts But we can avoid seeing the filets and drawing the inevitable conclusions and this is exactly what the devotees of religion do Those who live on religion do not wish to supplant it by reason from purely material selfish motives and those who support the church do it also from egotistic motives hope of reward and fear of punishnlcnt Their faith is a sign of moral cowardice Today it is entirely a question of mental courage a strong minded person will investigate the facts without prejudice a feeble mind will tremble at the mere name of god and shrink back from the sight of the truth The idea of a personal god who governs the Jnto of man is untenable if we apply a little logic reasoning Accord ing to the Christian doctrine turn core not what god intended them to be notwithstanding that ho was almighty till knowing etc when he created them knew that they would bo bad had the power to make them better and did not do it Ifn man acted in such a milliner even the Christians would call him an idiot lint they say min has a free will which is another absurdity because if such a god gave man his soul it was ready trade and ho has no free will It was stated above that religion consists of precepts re ferring to god and others referring to man and it is evi dent that with the denial of the existence ofit human god we do away with till obligations towards him Wo abandon the idea of sin altogether and recognize only duties against our fellow creatures men ruts animals and rights for our selves The Christian doctrine of vicarious atonement is so utterly absurd and idiotic that I fail to comprehend how a person with sound sense can believe such trash To imagine that a being such as the Christian mangod is represented should deliver the only perfect maul that over existedon earth to a cruel death for the misdeeds of others which were all his own fault because he made them so is disgusting unnatural and stupid The cross is a fit J Pill emblem of Christianity the symbol of cruelty and in justice Another tenet of thoChristian religion is likewise untrue anti against human nature the command Love thyenemy and do good to those who hate thecahow the Christians lovednot only their enemies but also the friends ofman kind with fire and sword we learned from history How they love them today we see on the battle fields and in the courts where even priests invoke the arbitral ion of the worldly tribunals to adjust quarrels and dissensions within the church provided some material value is involved And these are the people pretending to follow Christs teach- ingS If a man claims to love his enemy wo may safely put him down as a liar hypocrite or idiot or all three stripping the Christian religion from these im becile false dogmas nothing remains but the naturalsocial laws which wero adopted from nature by the founder of christendomnot discovered and introduced into the world by him Since we do not longer believe in a per sonal god fear neither hell nor hope for reward in heaven we can devote our entire attention to life on earth To enjoy our brief existence as much as possible is the solo rationalobject of life and accordingly wo call everything good which contributes to our happiness and everything bad which is detrimental to it But in order to enjoy life we must strictly obey the natural laws of society for every violation must bo followed by evil consequences for some ouetho person who commits the deed or the one whom it affects materially A general moral standard wo obtain easily enough as Darwin has pointed out already by observing the old simple rule Do unto your neighbor as you waul your neighbor to do unto you The simple question If What would bo the result if everybody acts ax I do 7so1os any doubt about the moral value of an action An action may have a beneficial or iniumus effect upon our neighbor may bo good or bad or may be indifferent if the effect falls back upon the atting per iu alone Wo can do wrong only to our fellow creatures and though an action may be unreasonable if it injures the person who perpetrates it it cannot be wrong if it does not affect anybody else It is a privilege of personal liberty to act as foolish as ono pleases provided it does not hurt his neighbor The more the people learn to comprehend their duties against each other the less laws will bo needed and the more will they be purged of such acts which have their origin in imaginary unreal necessity In old times the laws interfered oven with the domestic details ofa mans life and strange to say in this country which has always the name of liberty on its tongues end more of these bigoted tyrannical laws have survived than in the old country Wo notice everywhere that the fanatical ele ments make a strong effort to compel people differing from them in religious views to celebrate the Sunday in a man ner which thoy think fit If they wouldsimply apply the Continued on Pago 32 4 BLUE GRASS BLADE 7 In that earthquake In Italy With one blow of his mighty fist he sent lots of people Into eternity without due tice But that was the lords business he knew what he was doing The shaking up those telling the Americans when It is permissible for them to eat meat eggs etc and also when they are not permitted to eat at all I presume that the gout was partly to blame for thiS Holy Vision by the was the worlds fault and not his own Reducing this theory to the realms of theological speculation it is a serious slam upon the justice of the almighty The world is natural the result of the inevitable law of growth thoughunfair and unjust conditions creep upon socitey by reason of the perversity and greed of individuals Yet this does not justify the notion that if one man proves a failure the world somehow somewhere and in some way ought to bo compelled to pay for its callous in lifforcnee to his personal welfare It is a well known fact that some men spenda great deal of time pondering upon the question whether or not life bo actually worth the living While such a ono is thus absorbed another man is so busy livingtthat he does not take time to oven think of the It is not the worlds workers as a rule the men who carry forward the worlds business who indulge in speculationIas to the extent of the worlds indebtedness to is the class who indulge in sedulous speculations endless daydreaming who imagines the world owes him muchand that ho owes the worldnothing Such is the reasoning of the priesthood and the privi leged idle class No one can deny that if a man has some thing to sell that has a true market value the worldwill buy it from him and pay him for it This would be a perfectly fair and straight transaction No man must imagine that he can exist in a community and that every considera tion entering into the contract passes from the community to him with nothing coming from him to the community It is a safe presumption that the world owes no man any thing until that man has earned it Equal cons ideratiou3 must exist Were the conditions otherwise there could bo no justice In his own private affairs a man wouldnot think of purchasing an unnecessary article and ho must accord to the race collectively similar privileges andrights Sheer necessity may justify charity but when charity is reliedupon as business proposition failure is almost bound to ensue Every known religious system works upon the hypothesis offered by the unfortunate human who has furnished tho text for this article They are all asking begging pleading and praying for something from tho people but they have nothing to offer as an inducement save a bundle of glittering promises incapable of fulfilment The value of religion can only bo estimated upon what it does not upon what it promises to do So it must bewith men Ifit maul wishes to goa success and that means being useful ho must work for it Praying will not help lIe must render an equivalent to society for that which ho expects society to do towards him If tho world does owe every man a living then it is an evident fact that every man owes to the world tho rworship of work Every man must realize that ho ought not to expect that ho can earn his bread in the sweat of anothers brow Suppose that in the case referred to there was one life- ruilIedwho ruined it Is there no such thing as sefIdestruction Is tho worldof men and women to bo blamed for one failure What assurance can bo given that this life ruinedwas not duo to the fault of its owner Are we justified in blamjng tho world fQt our own shortcomings True indqpd the lives of many men have been blasted and blighted by the trickery and deception of other1 much but unless tile world at large condones and concurs in tho offense we may blame the individual but tho world itself is not at fault Tito trouble is that the human mind has been perverted and prevented from studying and knowing tho true relation ship of man to man by priestcraft and privilege mid theseIelements must bo destroyed if wo would prevent the ruin of other lives i 0IBLUE GRASS BLADE THE FALSE AND TRUE IN EDUCATION t Tho only real value of education is that it prepares the student for his proper contact in future years with the natural laws which govern men and things and enables him to better understand them and obey them Any system of education that falls short of this principle is seriously and sometimes mischievously defective and in this lies tho principal faults and mistakes of the Christ ian or religious systems These systems do not pretend to fit men and women to grapple with things as they are as they are bound to find and meet with them but the religious mind is trained to direct its fancy to an imaginary something supposed to be above and superior to natural law and to go through lift in a haze of speculation and mystery Tho truly great and successful men and women are thoso who have learned the practical lessons of life in the hard school of necessitous thought unmoved unshackled by religious thought and fear Eachmethod of instruction should have but ono end one aim one purpose namely an anticipation of and a prep aration for that broader and greater education to be found in the great school of nature In no other way can humanity be taught how best to escape those evils which come in the shape of punishments for a disobedience to natural law Man must bo in harmony with Nature Man must make tho best of Nature and then Nature will do her best for him This is natural philosophy in actual practice Tho most ardent believer only desires a god that ho can use him to his own benefit and advantage and when the believer finds out that thoro is no god to bo thus employed hu hasno fur thJr uso for him and is willing to discard all his previously formed beliefs Even in this an experience is necessary When prayers of propitiation fail and prayers of praise ar- egin unheededand unheard a natural and resentful doubt takes tho place of belief and the mind inevitably tulles away from the gods The supernatural is no more and only the naturalremains frof Huxley onco said in an address to tho working men of London Teach a man to read and write and you have put into his hands tho great keys of the wisdom box It is one thing however to have personal possession of tho keys to such an inestimable treasure and quite a different thing to uso them for tho purpose of opening tho box So it is with Nature Her boundless treasures her munificent beneficence lie before us for our uso hut they aro neglected ignoredl1ml sometimesderided for the sake ofn god that does not anti cannot oxiijfso it is that additional emphasis is given tho fact that all religious education is both false and mischievous taking man from tho real and leaving him that only which is unreal And these aye these unreal things bo your gods oh Israel tho stones upon which you offer to feed thoso whom you aro bound by human ties to feedwith bread In ono of his essays Descartes submitted proposition that tho hotly of a living man is a machine tho actions of which and explicable by the known laws of matter and motion and this is unquestionably true But it is machine in the nature of an army not a small piece of mech anism Huxley elaborated on this issue and asserted in his article on Tho Biological Sciences that each cell is a soldier an organ a brigade the central nervous system headquarters and field telegraph the alimentary and circulating system the commissariat Losses are made good by recruits born in camp and the life of an individual is a campaign conducted successfully for a number of years but with certain defeat in tho long run How truthfully and grandiloquently is this stated Just as the success of an army depends upon tho strengthand stability of each component part each individual soldier and recruit so tho success and consequent happiness with pacity for enjoyment depends upon the health activity and capacity for union of each individual coIl the free movements of tho organs a capable headquarters unda well equippedcommissary Religion is far from and incapable of producing such results It must follow then that less religion should bo taught humanity and the race given only that practical education that is best calculated to bring into notice tho operation of natural law ABOUT THE PREACHERS It has been said that those whom tho gods right dearly love are apt to die in their swaddling clothes which if true puts a mark of divine condemnation upon the paid advocates of godism for tho majority of these wax rich and fat live in opulence and plentyand are noted for a rather remarkable god and Christ and bible requires so little of effort so little exertion labor or skill that tho bodily tissue of the preachers begins to waste at a later stage in life than with laborers and the lifo of tho average preacher is of longer duration than most of his follows As an example take tho great ages attained by tho later popes cardinals bishops and tho clerical profession generally Compare this with the lifo of tho average laborer or the busy middle class and a vast difference is apparent Hence if tho good dio young what can bo said of tho preacher It is certain that they aro none too good for this gross earth or the angels would steal them and leave us to spill a scaldingsob over the evidences of their mortality It is customary to make an cpicedium an eulogy and if all the preachers would either quit preaching or die Blade would be pleased to lay a few Kentucky field flowers upon their theological sarcophagus but as tho majority of funeral orations and epitaphs aro usually falsehoods we prefer sticking to facts whether wo deal with the quick or tho dead Recent experiences with preachers viva proven exceedingly beneficial Tho popular supposition is that men cnn elevate there solves to positions of leaders because of and through an in herent individual merit So far as orthodoxy is concerned this is an egregious error Too frequently the least de serving are placed in command Church congregations have if 10 BLUE GRASS BLADE a remarkable habit of looking at things and doing things the wrong way They may not be always to blame but in the majority of such cases they are Take any average community of average men and women the classes and professions being fairly well represented and with few exceptions the preachers are the least thought of the least respected of all Inordinate gall and base ingratitude appear too frequently as their greatest and most prominent characteristics Deny Jesus and god if you willand nine preachers out of ten will wink the other eye but merely insinuate that the majority of them ought to go and braid their ears and they willorganize a boycott on you simply because they dare not crucify Pulpit panegyrics are now but a diseased emotionalism posing as a Succoth Beuoth for bankrupt congregations and impecunious servants of the lord- NATURAL EQUALITY AND GOD The statement in our Declaration of Independence and embodied in our Federal Constitution that all teen are born with equal rights is presumed to bo applicable to naturalresources and to so say is to state a general truth It is much like saying that water is wet But whether all then can really enjoy their equal rights to natural resources is a horse of quite different color We do not as a nation recognize god in our constitution nor can we safely recognize god in our politicoeconomical systems Take the assertion that god is allwise follow it with another that god made man and we are confronted with the antithesis ofn paradox apparently true really absurd Carry the suggestion into the field of economics and from the premises recognizing man as n land animal it must follow that whatsoever abridges mans naturaland free access to the land is not only an abrogation of his naturalrights but an insult to Omniscience But it theology be true the same allwise god made the tiger It too is a land animal It is also a carnivorous animal and following the same lines of argument from the original premises the tiger has a natural and inalienable right to the free access to the land and to kill and devour anything in sight from a jackrabbit to a Methodist campmeeting exhorterSelfpreservation is the first and fundamental law of all things that live from a molecule floating in a sunbeam to civilized men and to nations of men God must have made the tiger a flesheating animal God must have given the tiger talons and teethstrength and speedwith which it night overtake capture kill and cat its prey Standing alone unaided man is utterly helpless and powerless against the tiger Only by reason of his ability to invent and use weapons of offense and defense has maul been able to overcome the tiger Yet both tare godmade What right under the god theory has either one to kill the other Imagine one of these god creatures killing and eat ing the other Imagine a Roosevelt without any cause or provocation save a longing and a desire for brutal sport spending hundreds of thousands of dollars wrung from the pockets of American labor upon an expedition to Africa for no other purpose than to hunt and kill to glory in the deathagony the butchery of some animal which his god made to inhabit the earth and reproduce his kind Ah indeed this religious business is a peculiar propo sition when wo thoroughly analyze it Those who drive by advocating itaro as valuable to society as a cracked cymbal at a ten cent circus and about as necessary From the columns of the London Freethinker we learn that religious bigots on the Camberwell Town Council have excluded that journal from the tables of the free public library and a storm of protest is now being made against the act of exclusion By the time the bigots get through with Editor Foote and his able associates they will know they have been up against the real article Editor Foote is a stubborn and persistent fighter for right and truth 1 Well done California When the blind goddess counts up the names of those illustrious Americans who have bat tled nobly under banner the men and women of Cali fornia who have wrought the defeat of the Sunday law advocates byn decisive majority of 2 to 1 will head tIll list It is a regretablo fact that but few liberals tookan active part in the fight while tho brunt was borne by the Seventh Day Adventists Wo may extend congratulations to California however in that liberty still finds a home upon her soil x 1 EDITORIAL POTPOUKI The privilege of defending our own rights obligates us to respect the like rights of others The Blade extends a hearty and cordial welcome to May Bealsliolfpauir and her husband E J BealsIIoffpauir on its list contributors Their dialect stories are both refreshing and entertaining admirably written and always make a point strong enough to puncture the tires of tho orthodox bandwagon Some of tho Blades correspondents suggest that we are n trifle too harsh upon the superstitious godbelievers but wo cannot regale such a monstrous imposition with the oil of Smyrna and honoy of IIymettus Wo believe in tho ample law bf just compensation Orthodoxy in vogue would mean universal anarchy where in every man would be an Ishmacl considering only his mis erablo soul The consistent Christian must believe till there is of ligion without oven being able to comprehend it f BLUE GRASS BLADE 411 Universal life and action make for progress Lay tho winds still the tides and oldocean that perennial fount of health becomes but a stagnant poolof putrefaction Christianity at best a malodorous mother of dead dogs would produce universal stagnation save that it has long since been deprived of that power The soul of man has never yet been able to learna language x According to recent newspaper reports Prof Ernst JIaeckel as Instructor at the University of Jena was a plaguespot to the sainted theologians of Berlin who sought to have him removed It is said that only because he really believed what ho wrote and taught were his enemies unablo to dislodge him The story goes that a prominent theologian asked Prince Karl Alexander to demand the resignation of Uaeckel The theologian said It is terrible to think that a natal with his godless opinions teaches in one of our universities Do you think that ho actually believes the things which lie writes in his books That is just tho trouble ho believes them with till his heart and soul In that case canto tho answer he is only doing in his own way what you are doing in your way Let him stay where ho is Our fathers who were too proud to oven borrow have left a numerous progeny that is not ashamed to beg x English Socialists have originated an attack upon the established church in the domain of its prayer book Tho Church of England and its American representative the Episcopal Church never pray from the heart Its priests always pray from a book At each and every service prayers are given by rote Many years ago during th reign of Edward VT the primate of England Archbishop Oranmor wrote and had inserted in the catalogue of specially prepared prayers an appeal to the hind owners joined with a supplication to tho lord that the latter might soften tho hearts of the former and subjectively influence them to refrain from joining house to house and coupling laud to laud to tho impoverishment of others For some reason this prayer was eliminated after Cranmors heath but tho Socialists it is said will endeavor to compel a convocation of tho church to haye the prayer restored if A careful studyof thnow Testament will show that Jests lid not found any how faith but that ho livedand died in the faith of his fathers and that it would bo im possible to follow the directions ho is supposed to have given in religious matters without becoming a Jew x x Civilization is daily advancing and Athoisin is rapidly becoming more general This is an nrglllllentllgninst tho fallacies of religion t Ere long even the church will be forced to admit the fact that no than or woman becomes an Atheist from choice l The fact that sonic men seem to desire a personal jmfmortality affords no proof that all were not born to perish Death is the penalty of life Being denied his motion for a new trial Rev F X Boyd a minister of the United Brethren church at Gore Ohio was held to be iiuuiir if Christiianity could escape under such an excuse v Dr Alston Ellis president of the Ohio University in Ittrecent address upon tho subject of taxation is quoted saying Not a churchman in Ohio pays honest taxes or returns his property for taxation honestly From this it would appear that Ohio church people are prone to ehcnttboth god and mnnit History appears to bo repeating itself Church rule hits been tried and is found wanting weak vacillating and in ellicient The church people succeeded in electing a Mayor of Wichita Kansas but his administration has proven such a farce such a costly experiment that even the women are said to bo anxious to record their votes against him The decline in tho number of students for the ministry is again causing alarm among all branches of the church Statistics that have been gathered by H D Williams of Boston show ninety per cent of tho farmers come from farming families of lawyers 40 per cent doctors 30 per cent bankers 42 per cent ministers only 3 per cent It is also a noteworthy filet that ministers sons do not as a rule follow the profession of their father A world of argument is here Dr Washington Gladden of Columbus Ohio one of the eaders in the Baptist church in a recent discourse to Baptists in Boston urged his hearers to abandon their controversies about creed and Ceremony and advised them to concentrate their thought upon getting the golden rule established as tho law of neighbor life It would appear that another controversy would spring up ofequal intensity about the golden rule itself so that the later suggestion destroys tho utility of the former When any denomination of the Christian church gives up wrangling over creed and ceremony it will be because it is too weak and inconsequential to enforce its regulations I l 12 BLUL GRASS BLADE Mans Origin and Destiny t Continued from Page 6 rule of reciprocity they must know that they have as little right to interfere with the belief of their neighbor as these have to dictate the use they shall make of their time But these fanatics follow the same practice a the old inquisitors they pretend to act in the namiv ofa trod whenever they want to rob their fellow citizens of their dearest good personal liberty Since such persons whose actions are based on impudent lies am not accessible to arguments of reason the sword ie brutal force is the only kind of persuasion they will listen to As it is they willenforce their unjust laws where the people are cow ards the stronger rules and the single individual has to consult his own welfare in obeying or disregarding the dictates of liars and hypocrites Those who find justifi cation for their wrongdoing in the fact that these laws are the expression of the will of the majority and therefore must beright ought to consider that Christ was crucified by the majority that heretics and witches were burned by the majority that there are facts and truths whichcannot be altered or refuted by any majority that two times two remains four even ifa million idiots resolved it was five that a thousand wrongs do not make one right that one intelligent person has more sense thin a whole insane asylum but that the idiots are in the majority and have the physical power Having disposed of the false portions of the Christian doctrines we turn to those which are merely an expression of the natural laws of society and were neither invented nor discovered by the church As the first condition for the social life of a large number of individuals we find the mutual guarantee of existence Thou shalt not kill reads the corresponding command RATIONAL SPECULATION By J Watkins Space Is a necessity The Idea of no space is unthinkable Space therefore Is an eternal condition has always existed and must always exist As Nature abhors a vacuum space must bo filled with something has always been filled and will always be filled with some thing matter Matter then In some form or forms has always existed and Is therefore eternal and per se self existent for if it has always existed It could not have been created But matter moves and consequently changes This tendency must be an Inherent property of matter for if It is not then a time is supposable when matter was Inert If matter was ever in such a condition WHAT CAUSED IT TO BEGIN TO MOVK Mr Franklin H Heald of Tos Angeles Cal contends that the sole cause of motion meiit We see it observed by the animals who live peace ably in large communities we see it utterly disregarded the Christians who brutal disposition Murder is justly considered J greatest crime life is our most valuable possession a lost I life is lost forever a deed can never be made undone a destroyed life cannot be atoned for These are the severe inexorable mandates of the natural code of laws but religion has always encouraged murder by offeringq consolation to the remorsebitten conscience of the How consoling is the idea ofa heaven for a murderer where ho will meet his victim and be forgiven by god He has not destroyed the life of his victim ho has only hasten ed its transfer to eternal happiness where it continues in glory near its creator I have seen four murderers hung and every one of them expressed his conviction that ho would go straight to heaven where his victim and the lord awaited him withopen arms People who are so anxious to go to heaven ought to be thankful to the assassin who assists them to shuffle off the mortal coilt i f they them selves lack the courage When the Catholic religion was at the pinnacle of its power a very practicalarrangement existed between the church and the criminal who could buy indulgence for any murder he hadcommitted or even might commit No wonder that villains and cutthroats were zealous Christians there is no crime however dastardly for which the church has no forgiveness while the uncom promising natural laws offer but cold comfort to tho criminal To be continued Is expansion and contraction But therr must be heat to cause expansion and cola to cause contraction If matter was over motionless or inert and was set in motion by heat and cold we must suppose that these forces were developments and not eternally existing forces or properties of must conclude then that matter has not only always existed bit has always been In motion Even if heat and cold did not always exist they would naturally bo developed by the motion or movement of matter If either condition preceded tne other It must have been cold for heat Is developed by motion or friction as well as by certain combinations of matter But given Space Matter and Motion as eternally existing It is not difficult to lIeve that matter would get into all tho forms and conditions in there must be an eter nal subtle force Intelligence or something that evolves matter to those high condi tions through which Intelligence or Mind may manifest itself So far as wo know the human being and especially the human brain Is the most highly organized form of matter nnd therefore tho most conscious and tho best medium for the operations of Mind or the Intelligence In Nature In time wo may
