Made the Subject of Critical ReviewSome Tests Suggested for the Faithful of the Cult By Josephine K Henry Christian Science and the claims and methods of its founder Mrs Jlary Baker Eddy have had a searchlight thrown them by Frederick W Peabody a prominent lawyer of Boston Mr Peabody has been a student of what called Christian Science for ten years Ho now publicy from the platform and through the press pronounces the whole thing as a monstrous absurdity and crime So in earnest Mr Peabody that a few days ago ho delivered a lecture at the Bijou Theatre in Boston which city is now the home of Mrs Eddy If she would maintain her power over her it seems that Mrs Eddy will promptly and answer the questions of this student of 10 years of her socalled religion The name Christian Science is in itself n monstrous absurdity Mrs Eddy should at least have the honor of being the first one to discover any science in Christianity The science of Chris tianity consists in n sixday creation a clay roan a rib woman the earth rich with verdure before the sun was created a talking snake the whole world drowned by a fortyday nin the sun halted in its course at the command of a roan a talking jackass the killing of 150070 men because two of their neighbors looked into the box that held Gods Book Christian Science plays a trump carol in the twice repeated of the Bible which says And it came to puss that night the angel of the Lord went out and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred four score and live thousand And Reason Truths priestess seemed to you accurst Justice you labeled sin and truth a crime And would to error yoke us for all time 00 JJut its tho years speed on as man grows free Less will he heed you and your deity Till as a phantom of tho past you take Your place May Progress speed the happy day f San Francisco ColifI I I Christian Science in the Crucible I is is followers unequivocally chapter J when they arose early in the morning behold theywere till dead Eddys religion will put till tho modern scientists to flight and the dnctors and undertakers out of business Beside if she will show how this thing can be done nil other religions will capitulate to her For years Airs Eddy leas been licensed of purloining her ideas from Quimby who long ago taught that error is sickness that t belief is sickness that discord is sickness that there is no life truth intelligence or substance in matter that matter is error that tho belief of intelligence in matter is the cause of all disease that truth is God that there is no other truth but God that God is principal that wisdom love and truth fire principal that truth is health nndellc sickness that harmony by destroying disharmony cures disease and finally that all dis ease originates in mind and is cured by mind alone lip to 1870 Mrs Eddy claimed to bo n follower of Qniinby She later cast Quimby aside told launched en the sea of credulity socalled Christian Science claiming to be the nulhof the ideas on which it is founded Mrs Eddy claims to have written a book called Science and Health This boot is the Bible of Christian Science and hits been road by millions of people in tine new 11111oM world The followers of Mrs Eddy and they lure legion believe that God literally dictated this book Science j If t BLUE GRASS BLADE 3 i and Health to Mrs Eddy and that it is in every part as much the word of God as the Christian believes the Bible to be the word of God God made a revelation to Moses to Mahomet to Joe Smith and to Mrs Eddy You pay your money and take your choice It does seem strange that God selected Mrs Eddy to receive his modern revelation as he had to dig her out from so many entangled intrtrimonial alliances as uptodate the founder of Christian Science bears the name of Mrs Mary Baker Patterson Glover Eddy While Mrs Eddy has been receiving revelations front God she has taken time enough to marry a tandem team of husbands and extort from her dupes a million and a half of dollars One thing is certain while revelation and matrimony had claimed her time and attention she has not neglected the financial end of her religiomediealcommercial enterprise Mrs Eddy makes her followers believe that God has revealed to her as absolute truth that sickness pain and suffering do not exist in reality The dupes of this modern witchcraft sicken suffer and die and Christian Scientists fool themselves and their patients by denying the reality of disease as long as there is breath in the body and then when death comes they deny the reality of death A welldeveloped cancer or carbuncle is no argument with them They say such things are only delusions of the mortal mind If Mrs Eddy ixssessed the miraculous power to heal the sick as she claims why did she let lien third husband die of heart disease It may be she wanted to get rid of him or did not think him worth saving Why did she nut save her granddaughter where her only son appealed so piteously to her to do sll9 Why did she not save her coachman who died at her house in Concord Why did she send Mrs Leonard front her house a few days before site died of diabetes if not to try and avoid discredit on her professed powers Why did Mrs Eddy send a hurry call to a Boston dentist when she was wild with the toothache Certainly toothache in her own mouth ought to have been cured by the modern miracle worker If Mrs Eddy could have saved three people from suffering fund death and she can save poor humanity front its pains and pangs and floes not there certainly must be some thing radically wrong with her heart even if her mortal mind is loaded down with Christian Science Did any one ever hear of this high priestess of Christian Science healing any one She retired from the practice of the healing art 30 years ago because she has been too busy launching her army of fake healers upon a credulous world and gathering in the shekels front them and their deluded victims Lawyer Peabody in his lecture in Boston said Mrs Eddy is the inventor and solo proprietor of the greatest getrichquick ifSdlUlIIO ever conceived Her business ruins the highest emotions of people by appealing to their religious feelings and extort money from multitudes of credulous dupes for healing them of nothing but the delusion that there is something the matter with them Mrs Eddy claims that in 1850 site received a final revelation from God who for many years had been fitting lien to receive it Mrs Eddy claims that God is mind and mind is GouV It seems passing strange that this mind God should have waited 3800 years of the Christian era and several thousand years before that tithe to have made a revelation that there is no such thing as sickness and suffering except in the evil imagination of the human race after billions have fallen victims to nil the ills that flesh is heir to It seems cruel that this mind God had not found a Mrs Eddy ages ago to herald the tidings of great joy The Bible says that man is made in the image of God and the book also say that God has ey s ears fret hands hinder parts and is fashioned like human beings Arc the Bible God and theybothopportune time to prove that Christian Science ever relieved anyone of troy thing except common sense and their money and of these thousands have been effectually relieved judgehclearlydenicnstratedsome 4000 students were taught by me her in this college Think of it four thousand students at tIOU per student for a college course of lessons four thousand times 300 is ono million two hundred thousand dollars Pretty good pay even for instruction in Christian Science Besides this hundreds of thousands of copies of Science and Health and tons of other literature have been sold No wonder Mrs Eddy retired from the healing art and let her students heal the diseases in the mortal minds of her followers After attending to the business end of her religion she had no time to relieve the mortal mindof its pains and aches Now as to Mrs Eddys book Science and Health if one has an eternity of time to while away in reading and is careless whether their mental health is preserved or not it will be well enough to follow Mrs Eddy through her meaningless nonsensical jargon Science and Health is like unto an unabridged die tionary that had passed through an earthquake and been put together haphazard No wonder the world is swarming with mental inn aids said physical wrecks with such literature in Peabody in his lecture asks Is it nut now clear beyond possibility of cavil that all of Mrs Eddys absurdmind irrelevant pretensions have been merely unique business methods utilized to the utmost to give a fictitious value to ln r foolish and harmful teachings Tens of thousands of deluded people sire looking to this priestess of modern witchcraft for health for their diseased bodies stud peace for their tumbled souls and like all other spiritual commodities the goods have never been delivered Mrs Eddy has been reported dead a number of times despite her plaint of power over disease mill death It is not a dead sure thing that Mrs Eddy is living as lien house is guarded like a hastile and her death has been announced in the press several tries The New York papers announce that a conference Christian Scientists has been called by Mrs Delia Gilbert IfIprominent Christian Scientist promising to reveal fraud trickery to perpetuate tile fiction oftut unseen and leader Mrs Gilbert says All my efforts to see Mrs Eddy have been futile and the noun at Mrs Eddys home was unable lu produce the leader in the flesh Mrs Gilbert also says that Mrs Eddy is either dead or a helpless windless puppet and for this she has been expelled from the Christian Science Church Helen Wibnan the Mental Scientist who became a million aire and built the town of Sea Breeze Florida with money extorted from her dupes fur absent mental healing proclaimed that she would never die as site lead conquered death but Helen died and maybe Mother Eddy has shullled off this mortal roil and may have joined Helen in the sweet fields of Eden These two would certainly be kindred souls They may be resting in the ground where all good fakirs go or they may bo resting under the shade of the trees in spirit land planning a scheme to beat the saints and angels out of the coin of the celestial realm But Christian Science is hat one brand of religious fraud All that a harvest of iniquity will result in conse quence of pulling down the walls of superstition Various preachers have written the Sun and commended its course Not a word ofadverse criticism is allowed This is a specimen of Christian fair play The preacher and the Sun have by implication placed those who do not take to Biblical nonsense in the class of persons susceptible to wrong doing and by inference puts those who hold to superstition beyond the pale of temptation But all the crime is directly traceable to believers in the truck that preachers teach and disbelievers seem immune to wrongdoing Send n markedcopy of this to the Sun Let it know that some readers have been put onto the Jesuitical game Catholicism could not save all those embezzlers that have come to light in office by virtue of Catholic antecedents is a defaulter to the tune of 07000 Willie was appointed to the position of stock clerk at the City Hall at a stipend of 900 per annum which stipend was recently increased to 1400 Ho was a personal appointee of City Comp troller Harry Hooper Mr Hooper was elected to the office chiefly because of his good standing in Catholic societies He was the only Democrat elected at one elec tion showing that his church mates were willing to vote for him but not for his Protestant political running mates The present mayor Barry Mahool is a Presby terian Democrat and was elected because of his excellent Sundayschool record Mr William Downs was used to carry the cash to the 18 depository banks which the city favored Ho altered the checkslips and put 1000 500 or any old sum that he felt the need of into his own pocket The City fathers had so much confidence in this Catholic saloonkeepers son that no ques tions were asked and the peculations began soon after Willie was appointed Willie owned two race horses and an interest in a shore resort Ho was married in all due solemnity by Priest Didier a few years ago and his house furnishings are valued amid wealth which is attributed to speculative advance of rent If the real cause had been recognized by the author he must have seen that the majority of people are not seriously affected by such financial catastrophes but only that por tion relying for a livelihood on an uncertain basis With a goodcrop and a little money as reserve it does not concern a farmer at all whether the great money kings or speculative institutions are financially ruined Tho land held on speculation near San Francisco would not alter natters if thrown open for settlement all at once When the entire west was still unsettled within easy reach of the eastern colonies poverty existed the steno as it does today Laud alone does not help anybody a poor man would starve on square miles of fertile virgin ground if he had not tho means to cultivate tho soil told live until the first crop was gathered Book VI contains some commendable recommendations in regard to the unproductive occupations described in a previous chapter But tho sixth paragraph more general distribution of land is a conundrum based upon tho same erroneous conception of the relation between soil and labor which forms the basis for all subsequent deductions and culminates in tho measure proposed as the great remedy for poverty To make land common property Although the main fact is undeniable that all human beings mi earth de pend on the soil for subsistence the great increase in value of land in certain localities is solely and exclusively due to the system of division of labor to personal exertions favored by natural conditions as for instance inN ew York by the presence of a fine bay and river a natural highway of commerce But what right lilts the newly arrived anarchist to any of the laud or its improvements to which ho lass not contributed anything at tall At another place tho author repeats the trite saying that the laws of nature are harmonious what that means ill regard to mankind I am unable to comprehend But now comes tho great revelation ho proposes to reform the natural laws which he leas discovered are wrong to substitute equality for inequality plenty for want justice for injustice etc in short to inaugurate tho era of universal prosperity and happiness In Book VIT the author falls buck into tho same conventional practice followed by all those who want to make tho world believe some fallacy or absurdity as the church has always done ho announces himself the inter preter of gods will and of course his new revelations must be true beyond cavil and doubt When be says We are all hero by the equal permission of the creator we are all hero with an equal title to the enjoyment of his bounty with an qual right to the use of all that nature so partially offers ho only demonstrates his belief in the orthodox conception of the world told his ignorance of the biological laws discovered by modern science The high sounding declaration that the poorest child born in England lilts as much right to the estates of some duke as his eldest son betrays a generous disposition of Mr Gat sOlllclwclJI else expense but I am afraid it will not help the infantImulch Mr George lilts discovered allut once that theIworld has hewn wagging its tail the wrong way lilts com mitted the unpardonable mistake and injustice to make portions of tho earth surface personal property Since the law is worthless without the application of labor find labor can not he applied without land tho world lilts considered the two as integral inseparable parts constituting prop erty and since it is natural that such property passes upon the offspring after the death of tho parent these two factors property toil inheritance have formed since time immemorial the basis of society in tall parts und among nil nations of the earth Isnt it singular that so many people mado this mistake mid did not findout until Mr G dis covered it Tho civilized nations have attained their pres ent high state of culture and refinement which means material wealthunder this system told wherever society was organized on a different plan tho community of laud it lilts not proved conducive to tho progress of tho race and its preservation in tho struggle of existence But of the biological laws tho author seems to bo ignorant he forms his ideas and declares tho world to be wrong if tho filets do not agree with his views Other mortals file satisfied withstudying tho laws of nature but not so with this Titan JI George who wants to storm tho heavens und call nature to account for having made men unequal and having imbued them with ideas of justice not in conformity with his own If ho Lad studied history unbiased by his own preconceived ideas he might have discovered that till attempts to reform mankind by teaching doctrines that tare in opposition to tho natural laws and impulses roved dis mal failures and as tho grandest example of this kind ho must have recognized his own christian religion which lilts neither prevented tho dark ago of barbarism during which tho christians surpassed the lowest brute in ferocity cruelty told immorality nor could it cheek tho covert stealthy action of those agencies that have wrought a trans million of ideas which finds a tangible expression in the phenomenon called progress Where in tho world a letter security can bo found for THE BLUE GRASS BLADE 7 the improvements of land than its ownership I am unable to understand us little its the reason why the tact of non possession should prove a greater incentive for productive ness than ownership The great remedy to make land public property finally turns out to ho nothing else hut a change of taxu lion to abolish all taxation save that upon hind value Mr G seems to assume that all laud was preoccupied or rather preempted before it was cultivated and was never worked hy the owner but always hy some one else who to pay rent As it really is with money as the gen tuxeIfspeaks of land monopoly but does not state how this monopoly originated If he had investigated this question without any prejudice ho would have discovered the truth that this unequal distribution of soil was the result of division of labor under the pressure of tho struggle of existence The bestowal of largo land grants in tho old country upon persons as a reward for real or imaginary services during tho mediaeval age forms the basis of many possessory titles and was tho result of the feudal system Hilt how did it happen that this monopoly grew up hmo in America under a republican government tho owner of an immense area of uncultivated land ofwhich prior land grants form but an insignificant part Only a hundred years ago land was so plentiful in the United States that everyone could take a homestead How did some persons acquire more land than others though they could not pre empt more under the llnd Did they steal it No they bought it or received it in return for sonic work crformcd in tho interest of the community squiring tho outlay of money Thus tho accumulation of money preceded tho appropriation of land and in that cause of tho land monopoly not tho effect as Mr G wants tho people to believe And how did individuals gain the money By their superior ability or tho ignorance of tho people which amounts to tho same in its results in short through all these factors described in the preceding chapters The value of land is measured by the sauce standard as any thing else by money by tine probable income that maybe derived front it it has no other value besides Desert land unfit for cultivation is not worth tho costs of recording land requiring irrigation is worthless without the necessary expenditure for ditches etc What tho monopoly value of such land and tho rent that the state is to fake represent is a mystery which the author himself does not appear to know because ho docs not explain it In conclusion the author expresses his belief in a per sonal god eternal life etc and produces the time worn argument that these venerable superstitions must ho true because tho ancient barbarisms and modern savages believe them in one form or another thereby denouncing science and progress CHAPTER XVI Tim UNITED STATUS AMEKICA The better is the enemy of the goodin these few words is contained the whole principle of progress And what constitutes the better Everything that is an it from Mr Leahys own lips that ho had Mr Ingcrsolls advice before he accepted tho presidency and that Mr I tributed 5000 towards the sum necessary for conitho institution I am not sure as to how long continued in operation I think less than 8 years After that Mr L lectured widely throughout tho Southwest He finally became president ofun Independent Normal School in Great Bend Kansas While there ho was converted during evangelistNitsin tho College building The remainder of his life ho spent in trying to undo the evil which ho had done and widely proclaimed the fact of his conversion Ho died about two years after his conversion For my facts as to his con version I am indebted to Prof L II Uausam who was then an unbelieving professor in tho sumo institution at Great Bend and who was converted at the same time Prof Ilausam is now in charge of one of tho Commercial Colleges in Denver Colo and ho can give the exact datesIMi Leahy was very brilliant as an orator Tho finest speaker of That Houghs alleged facts about Leahys conversion were ohtainedsecondhan AVo propose to push this investigation as far as we pos sibly can and hope that our friends capable of doingso will aid us to the full extent of their power THE SIGEL MURDER Tho shocking details that have been revealed as a result of the investigation made into tho murder of Elsie Sigel iu New York City by a Christianized Chinaman are so revolting in character that tho public authorities ought to interfere if foolish parents insist upon allowing giddy girls to run loose among suchcompanions The world knows that no Chinaman ever accepted the Christian religion because ho really believed in it or had any love for it but on the contrary had a personal end to gain business profit to make or some brutal pleasure to gratify Tho good Chinaman docs not have to borrow any religion His own religion is good enough Tho teach ings of Confucius tire enough to induce moral character if consistently followed The Christian religion can offer nothingsuperior Its cheaps and easy means of salvation through blood atonement its redemption from sin through more repentance and forgiveness are not calculated to create tho best of impressions upon tho mind of the Chinese and if tho missionaries succeed in really shaking his belief in his own religion his baser nature is naturally developed thereby It is precisely thus with tho Sigel murder While wo aro not able to say that tho suspected murderer was in every sense a Christian he none tho loss had been mado a special object of attack by tho volunteer female missionaries and it is highly probable that ho had pro fessed Christianity as a means to an end But of what character are these Christian missionaries Public confidence was supreme in Elsie Sigol as a Him tian mission worker among tho heathen Chinese but Ailed I the sickening developments have been made public her other side is exposed and with it comes a shame and disgrace that the blood of Christ can never efface Take even tho confession of Miss Helen Clark director of therChirk mission on Worth Street sold from her lipwe learn that more women missionaries have been degraded and ruined than the number of Chinese mOil converted by their missionary effort Test what the actual figures would show it is impossible to even intimate but we do know that but few Chinese men aro over really converted but large numbers make a profession of conversion If these are counted in Miss Clarks tabulation as converts then the number of degraded and ruined white women at the hands of Chinese must reach larger proportions than wo dare even presume Consider the hordes of Chinese men who flock to and live in this country and then reflect that so few of their women come with them then the dank r of young girls entering their opium dens andchop Sit ey restaurants alone in tho guise of Christian missionary work will become painfully apparent It is no uncommon proceeding in New York City for some white woman mis sionary to marry a Chinaman after a few months work among them But for her death a similar fate awaited Elsie Sigel send in our judgment she is now far better off If ever any fact could bo asked for to show the utter fallacy sold absurdity of Christian missionary enterprise the case under consideration should prove to bo tall that could bo desired Fools there be who willet give of their means to keep up the good work because of tho appeals for cash that will yet lo made by tho dear pastors and the pitfalls continuo to be dug for the unwary feet of fool ish and giddy young girls Had Elsio Sigel gone to work in a laundry or studied tho art of making pie she would bo alive today and of some probable use in the world Asa missionary sho was a failure as they all are fpr with all tho arts sold eloquence that cometh from the gift of tongues they had not succeeded inconvincing one China man perhaps more that murder was wrongs a Chris tian the murderer can secure forgiveness at tho end of tho rope or as ho sits in tho electric chair The springof a trap the touch of a button and another Chinese angel is in heaven Elsie Sigel mission worker as sho was her sins still upon her had no timo for repentance even and if the theoryto had taught bo true wo can understand her fate Tito American mind may now reflect upon to what ex tent tho religion of Jesus will influence the mind ofa Chinaman for good They may also estimate the moral worth of Christianity upon the human mind for if it will produce an Elsio Sigel as well as her Christian murderer then it is timo that something else was tried One is tempted to ask whether this business of missions among the Chinese is worth while since tho history of the movement shows that tho Chinaman is morn likely to con 1YBLUEGRASS BLADE workerisSir Robert Hart for many years in charge of the Chi nese customs on behalf of the British government and probably hotter acquainted with China and tho Chinese than of attending English speaking schools is to learn English and to pickup foreign methods and that John Chinamans pretense of conversion is pretense and nothing more- CIIURCII GRAFT It is gratifying that one preacher in all Americr tins been found who possesses the courage to publicly denounce the infamous systems of graft now being practiced by tho a Seattle Wash dispatch to the daily papers we not tho church members fund its pastor know this before thoy solicited the advertisement and the cash If they did was it not downright dishonesty to take them t But did any church institution ever refuse to accept nosey collectedjgoes even that any church resorting to such a method of getting money is simply using the church for holding up the merchant to get the money and is simply grafting Other means of graft even more despicable have been used bysome churches to get cash Trilby parties wher young ladies of tho church exhibited their bare tootsies at twentyfive cents per glimpse kisses from young church women sold at public auction to tho highest bidder old maids auctions and other devices tore by no means rare among tho sanctified when cash is needed Rev Matthews also denounces the church dinner where the butcher baker and the grocer are asked to give of their stock for tho purpose of furnishing tho meal find then they are charged fifty cents to sit down and cat that which they had given Speaking of these issues Rev Matthews became fiery in his denunciation and his utter ances fire so apt that we prefer to allow him to speak for himself He said further simplyheldpublish programs and cannot give entertainments and din ners without this sort of grafting they should forever cease publishing programs and giving dinners Churches also graft on the cities in which they are
