just anything you want to say about woman Now that is certainly license enough and I propose to take ad vantage of it and will present a few rambling ideas on woman some of which need not be taken too subjects selected was that all im portent mad irrepressible one woman In looking over the thousand or more quotations gathered on both lovely and unlovely woman I note that women in speaking of woman seldom have anything bad to say of themselves while in speaking of them they are great ly given to exaggeration either heroizing or lionizing them or viciously abusing them whip men on the other hand are equal ly given to exaggeration either deifying and augelizing the ladies or meanly slurring them Love each other as we may still there always seem to be a little war on hand between the sexes If you would fully comprehend womans infinite variety just read a thousand select quotations of which she is made the subject and your brain will soon get into such a state of bewilderment as to what woman really is that it will never be able to extricate it self from the tangle Certainly wOman is the mys hwy of all mysteries The more you read the moro you wonder and ever stranger and stranger but cease to be Queen of Hearts and no longer would she be able to fascinate and bind the strongest man with a single hair To he serious ladies did it ever occur to you that womans best claim to greatness lies in mans confessed inability to comprehend herDid it ever occur to you that as long as woman remains a mystery to men just that long will she remain a sacred being to him an angel a What a whirlwind is her head and what a whirlpool full of depth and danger is all the rest about her There was Solomon who cer tainly hall every opportunity in the world to judge woman II A fountain I never could have lied groaning all is van ityWith the choice ofa thousand wives Im sure Id a lived a thou sand lives and having lived so muchly here it wouldnt have made much difference to me if I lived again or not Nobody but a fool would die grumbling after having had a thousand wives and they the pick of his empire It used to be I had great sym pathy for womankind When father would go to church Sundays and bring home the preacher and his wife anda half dozen other starved loking saints and set thorn down to a big dinner mother had been all morning cooking it did seem to me that womankind was getting the worst of it and she was But in these later when woman has about quit feru1ingI the preachers and since they have driven schoolteachers bookkeepers stenographers doc tors druggists and half the rest of us out of business I am not nearly so sympathetic as I used to bo 1 fun like the fellow down in North Carolina who stole a horse and was tried for it His lawyer made such an eloquent plea for him that he was acquitted After the trial the lawyer said Now see here Bill you did steal that horse didnt you Well judge said Bill in reply I used to think that I stole that horse but since Ive heard you speak Ill be doggone if I aint in doubt about it Likewise since I have heard women like Sarah Platt Decker and IrShaw and DrSiewers und others speaking and tell how they have put men out of business in the past und what they are doing to them now and what they are going to do them Ill be doggone if 1 aint in doubt just as to where I stand on the woman ques tion You for years just for the possession of a wom an Helen of Troy When did woman ever contend to the death for the possession of a sham As in the ease of Mark Antony men have thrown not only life nay but empires just for a womans love When did man oilget such worship from a always first and last in tIle worship and adoration of all down along the line the female gets the best of it Note till distinction made of eatable birds and animals chickens ducks turkeys swine cattle and sheep Time poor male is doomed to slaughter fattened killed and eatQH and the female let live All of which is evidence of course of the greater need use and import ance of the female But nevertheless it is awful tough on the gentlemen Wo frequently hear it declared that we can tell what people ares by what they eat The reason woman are so viciously disposed against men is duo to the fact of their long continued diet of mania mont When they gilt right mad at us they could just eat usfrom habit and I say Johnson knock ed out the undefeatable Jeffries was all the same to us We could not see that the fate of the white and black races hang trembling in the balance and if we had seen it we should have said that the victory must go to the win ner Nature doesnt share mans prejudices She is perfectly in different about the color of the upper or the lower dogs skin Until the Greeks set up business none of the ancient civilizations were white And after the lapse of moro than two thousad years nature quietly permitted an Asi atic yellow nation to give a Eu ropean white nation a remarka bly sound sinister feature of the JeffriesJohnson fight was the presence of hundreds of ladies heaven save the mark Sour three hundred of the fair sex were seated in what may be called a reservation the rest were scattered among the elegant crowd The phenomenon was ono of time outcomes of liberty Those wire think that women owe their modesty and gentleness to something entirely innate and not to countless ages of evolutionary discipline are to put it mildly mistaken Give women their fling and they will be as bad as men perhaps worse if we may trust the shire of Juvenal There is truth in the old proverb that the corruption of the best is the worst It may also be that woman hurts herself more than man does if she falls Women most frequently turned their thumbs for the death of the defeated in the Roman arenas nor apparently are the ladies behind time gentlemen in their enjoyment of bloodshed- nt a Spanish bullfight r rr Jeffries and Johnson both bragged before the contest but the white bruiser beat the black bruiser at that game The whites indeed are the great est braggarts on earth and their religion helps to make them so las we shall see presently Johns said ho was going to beat Jeffries in religious circles this is in essence the only policy pursued Blacks are not allowed to sit in the same church with t whites Young Miens Christian Associations will not admit colored members They worship tho same God are to be saved by the same blood of Christ and will have to mix with each other in heaven but the white believers will see the black believers damned before they mix with them on BLADE DIE I have just received my copy of the elude and read the editors letter giving notice of the prob able demise of our old friend the ilade Sonic of you have heard a help call before and have helped but it was never more important than now that you help promptly Shall we let the Blade rust out Dear Old Blade It has carried a sharp edge and has mown some rank weeds Shall we relegate it to oblivion while we support those of newer and baser metal I for one feel that we are traitors if we turn our backs on this dear old paper now It has weathered1- 1iany a storm its present edi tor us well as its past editor and founder hats suffered many a hardship for the sake of this keen edged instrument Dont letItdie We need it more than ever before To let it die now wouid Waste all the energy that its editors and supporters have spent on it Lets keep it alive as a monu them to one of the cleanest purest and most honorable old men that ever lived No matter whether you agreed with all he believed and said I did not you could not know tile without recognizing his worth and admiring the good that was in hint The Blade hUB always been clean in its advocacy end it is our duty to stand by it rfhile it is right as it has stood jy us and the cause wo represent it has ever dared to stab the enemy in the defense of right no matter whether that enemy was of high or low degree Its pages are open for the discussion of free thought and it never dictates any particularism The Blade is not a one mans paper but is a paper of the people for the people and by the people I want tosuggest that the Blade be made a monthly and improved in form and made as good read t ing as possible that a Blade Club he formed to support it that the membership fee be 100 pinch will include a years sub ription to this splendid monthI jy this amount to be paid once Ahen said club is organized Then I suggest that the editor make an estimate of what it willI cost to issue the paper for one year figuring on this now monthly and what it will cost per hundred to mail tic paper Ihs can then let it be known through the paper how many members to the club ho gets and if they arc not sufficient to cover the years pense of issue and mailing till club members are to voluntarily contribute the balance This will fix the Blade for one year if its friends will furnish the matter for printing and I will certainly do my part toward urging some of the bright lights to help One year from now if the monthly de serves to live we will contribute our little mites again It is a se rious thing to let a Free Thought paper die Wo have very few mediums of exchange and we certainly need all we have Irresolution and inaction will mean the death of this sheet Do not wait for the other fellows but nil talk at once Write today and tell the editor what you are will ing to do Nothing can scream louder than one of Uncle Sams dollars unless it is several of them1 Dont let an old mans life sacrifice prove a failure Now is the time to prove that you have red blood in your veins by stand ling by an old friend- ELIZABETH WILEY The Blade is grateful to its cor respondent for this letter and should be glad to hear from oth ers along this or other lines We would suggest however that the publishing of a monthly that would do credit to the name of the paper would be as expensive as the publication of the present weekly We have figured our expenses down to the lowest cent and include nothing but the cost of printing and postage yet the receipts for the month of July up to the 24th have not been suffi cient to pay the cost of one issue of the paper LETTER FROM DR WILSON Cincinnati Q July 4 110 Editor Blue Grass Blade Yours received requesting some copy Nk t having time to write anything special along the Liberal line I send you all I have on hand an address delivered last week before the Harriet Tay lor Upton Club the leading wom ans organization of Cincinnati A big part of the address is taken up with matter foreign to that generally discussed in your paper However a little change of grazing is good now and then and it will help to fill up anyhow What little spare time I have now is give nto my Book of Verse which I am still working on with the view of getting it out this fall sureI would like to say to my Blade subscribers that I have had so much to hinder in the last two years that it has been impossible for me to publish it as promised However the delay I am sure wil add not only to the import ance of the book but also to its size At first I intended to pub lish a book of about 125 pages but now I have material for over 300 pages and I am going to put it all in one book as I doubt that I will ever be able to publish an other book and may not write much more I do not know of course how the book will be received but those acquainted with my general writings may judge it from them I shall not please or satisfy all I well know but I feel sure of pleasing many Excepting Lowell and Whitman none of the other Americans poets dared own their own soulsand even they were eminent straddlers and wrote in such a veiled manner that only scholars can comprehend them I have tried to be and dared to be different I do not call myself a poet but just a rhymesterand- have written for the child as well as the man and have endeavored to be up to date avoiding the simpering and cringing and syc opliancy so common to the many My work in size as poetry goes will be really two books in one and will cost much more than I first thought it wouldprobably 200 I need subscribers and would greatly appreciate orders from my friendsYours truly J B WILSON OUR ALLIES By R D Nauman A district conference and camp meeting of Seventh Day Adven tists held recently at Sigourney Iowa has recalled the fact to my mind that in regard to all the most vital questions of public policy demanding a complete separation of church and state not simple its a beautiful theory but as a living fact for which wo as Freethinkers and Rationalists are striving these people arc by flu the best allies wo have Their position on Sunday laws God in thc Constitution appropriations for religious or seuhi ligions purposes chaplains at public expense etc is absolutely correct One of the most eloquent addresses on this subject to which it has ever been my pleas ure to listen was given at this camp meeting by II C Russell of Takoma Park Washington D C who is the chairman of the Religious Liberty Bureau which bureau is under the auspices of the Adventists If the one man in these United States who has done and is now doing the most preventingCongress of religious legislation wider one pretext or another was to be pointed out that one man would be II C Russell Now I do not wish to be understood as saying that these people have made any very greats strides towards the daylight in so far as questions of socalled revealed religion and the superstitions and humbug that follow in its theyhavewell know the Bible has a thou sand different people and the be thoughfoundeda complete separation ofchurch and state is concerned coincides exactly with the conclusions of all Rationalists founded simply on justice experience and common sense Furthermore these Adventists are organized and in dead earn est about this matter They religiousfanaticism as other Christian denominations have it upon the other side low over as the Advenist is absoluu ly right in the position he takes policyinvolving should receive our unstinted sup port and assistance That these people have made progress in the right direction was plainly indicated to me sometime since for when I showed a copy of what are known as The Nine Demands of liberalism to ono of the elders in the Adventist church and after he had carefully inIa exceptions to the wording of one or two paragraphs we would be willing to stand upon that as our own political platform The great thoroughness of their work and the undoubted value of their efforts on behalf of religious liberty was impressed on me most forcibly upon one other occasion when I was circu lating a petition for one of our liberalorganizations against some threatened national Sunday legislationsome twentyfive or thirty signers when I stet a deacon in the Ad ventist church and began to speak to him of the matter With a knowing smile he pulled a roll of paper out of his pocket and to my astonishment unfolded a petition of exactly the same import as my own and beairng some 500 signatures- In conclusion let me recommend personinabout himself find out if there are any Adventists or Seventh neighborhoodwith them Find out what they are doing in regard to keeping church and state forever sepa rate Give them your assistance and a contribution if necessary in this good work for though I have called them our allies I am not quite sure but what we are rather their allies in the great work of preserving those grand principles of a being but the first cans is only a being existence entity or tiringas opposed to or distinguished from a non being a nonexistence a non entity or a nothing The first cause or supreme power is there fore a being entity or existence within the universe and inscrut able or incomprehensible to man and has been well defined to us as the first cause last under stood Now right here is where our views of a God come in In case there is a power or being that we call God it is this inscrutable power back of nature beyond the comprehension of mortal man consequently not for us to know and as no neither can it receive anything from us There fore addresses to it are useless and illogical and those who do so address it seriously involve themselves in an illogical belief in the personality of the First Cause and in its possession of human attributes such us heat ing seeing etc a belief which is founded as we have well on con jecture only It seems somewhat strange says Herbert Spencer that men should suppose the highest wor ship to lie in assimilating the ject of their worship to themselves What we know or can know respecting the inscrutable power is explained by the known laws of JJludo ruse Christians greatest and most noteworthy trait is his sublime fuithalills childlike credulity and Brother Wade seems to have his full share Ono result never fails to follow this trait mitt it hever and always inability to think clearly and ra tionnlly It requires great faith to see a personal God who thinks und designs all things in an in finite universe and who has time to mauve tape Worms while run ning tho complex machinery of a universe so largo it has neither center nor circumference And it is pretty safe to say that only those who run to faith or cred ulity have the least idea or con cepion of such a God The man ifestations of nature do not reveal him or give time least indication that his services are needed or required in the natural order of things and rational thinking seeks in vain to discover any bnsis for the claims of blind faiththat a personal god runs and controls every movement of matter that takes place through out talC infinite realms of space Infinite realms what do these words really mean to a finite mind that can have no con ception of anything beyond cer tain limits Actually nothing for the distance one can project his mind into space is so little compared with what extends beyond that he makes not the least im pression on infinite space and yet so awe inspiring is his effort that he gladly returns mentally to this iniinitesmal earth for rest and relief When man first made god in his own image and with his own characteristics somewhat enlarged the main thing in the universe was this little world and it did not require much of a god to run it but since the discovery of thin fact thatt this earth is such a minute part of the whole we begin to see how mans god falls short of meeting the require ments of designer builder and motive power His little god got along quite nicely when he had nothing to do but take care of this earth although he got so tired when he made it that he had to take a day off and rest up In those days when faith could see him so distinctly god hud leisure to count hairs design tape worms and do no end of trivial things which included listening to the personal prayers of every individual and deciding whether to answer them or not But great changes have taken place since ignorant and credulous men created the bible god to explain how nature dotes her work and this god which Christians still believe in and must or repudiate their book is such an insignificant god compared with one great enough to manage an infinite universe that he and his attributes now create a smile of derision in every shah who does his own thinking independent of a priest or a preacher The bible god is undoubtedly Brother Wades god for his god seems to think plan and act just like that famous anthropo morphic phantom that bible writ ers put up in the sky and their foolish followers have tried to keep there ever since Thinking plunningand then acting are certainly of a per sonal being no matter how large you make him and in such a ing Brother Wade admits he be lieves The moment he does I repeat his belief makes him un and rationally able to reason clearly for a personal god no matter what his size be as un ablo to exercise power through out infinite spree as any or all the gods of ancient mythology Let this idea enter your minds all you god believers an infinite universe requires an infinite god if it has any and such a god could have no thinking apparatus or any intelligent relation to finite beings like ourselves as we understand the word intelligence That lsa word that loses all meaning when applied to anything infinite so if you are going to make gods and believe in themone or many they must be personal gods knowl hence in edge inanda god who hears and answers who comes m closeprayers touch relation with human beings is to believe in a finite god for no other could do such things or sustain such relations to us So about god or when any man talks tries to define the one he pro fesses to believe in he not only buts re makes himself ridiculous veals his pitiful weakness in re results When a man wants to talk ut tor nonsense lot him talk about god and how he works through nature for it is a subject no knows no moro about than Iifs predecessors knew when they wrote the bible or a puling infant knows today in its nurses arms We see nothing but nature and her manifestations and back of them we cannot go for there is nothing back of matter In matter is the force that moves it and it is always under control of natural because inherent modes of motion and no outside lawgiver was ever needed to intro duce artificial laws which are the kind men make and mighty poor are the most of them We know if we know anything that nature or matter in its infinite forms and varieties is not a con scious thinking substance for ever and always nature produces only to destroy Nothing in her works has permanency or stabil ity and whether she is making ivorma to torment her high est handiwork Hs modest man styles himself or is perfecting destroythissuffering and agony it is all the same to nature for there is no consciousness of giving pleasure or pain and her Brother Wades childlike credulity did not prevent him front thinking rationally he would condemn and denounce the murders of his Uod as quick as an atheist If his God is able to run this world without destructive earth quakes why doesnt he1 If he can prevents them by controlling Nature and her movements why does he not do so During the ye year 261 persons have died in this city from the slow and agonizing death that cancers always cause and tapeworm doc tors are kept busy removing from human stomachs those special pets of God and other worms that destroy health and prevent happiness And yet says Bro WadeII I admit the wisdom and the goodness of the tape worm and cancer although not able to see and explain itlll If this is not the limit in blind and docile faith to please God and stultify reason then it is a close second to the other God believer and faithist who knew a certain thing was impossible and that was why he believed it When any nina can write such words it is evident his reason has been perverted and his judg mont distracted for the ability to see wisdomi and goodness in that which inflicts misery and suffering on human beings shows that a mans thinker has gone wrong And such will always be the ease where men permit dead fools and fanatics to do their thinking for them What does any sensible man care for the views of Bible writers when their views cannot stand the test of reason What gives them any value when tested by present knowledge and what has been learned since they lived The world knows more today than it over know before or we are nook ing no progress and where is the man that will dare assert that fact So when a man is heard quoting old St Paul as ultimate authority on any subject it fills mo with disgust Under no conditions or circumstances will I permit that old hooknosed and bringing about the federation of the nations of the earth Who can dispute on such a sub jeet with one so familiar with the intentions of Divine Providence Wo venture to suggest however that speaking humanly Mr Steads evidences might be iiwro convincing Wo confess to being fairly sickened with the hypocritical attitude of American bowlegged Jew to do my think ing and Any mans views of God and another existence are worth just as much as his for he had no knowledge aboilt such things cud imuginutioufOl or ever did live who could tell us any tiling about God or show old lady with her knitting needles making cancers tape worms body lice kinds of Christians They raised heaven and earth and the other place to beingholdwas likely to be very much hurt for boxers dont try to killeach other but a lot of white heath en would enjoy themselves after their own fashion in watching the encounter Now it is the settled conviction of the average Amer ican citizen even more than the average British citizen that all enjoyment but religious enjoy ment is a deadly sin For that reason they clamored against the boxing match in California and succeeded in getting it transfer red to another state as if that was an advantage to anyone but the Reno caterers It was not bru tality and cruelty that they were opposing They did not protest with any vehemence that we heard of against the horrible lynching of a negro about the same time He had merely sent a love letter to u white girl and for that offense he was tortured with redhot wooden stakes and finally burned alive Brutality and cruelty of that kind are tol vermin and very recently something new and novel known as the hookworm Tints does his divine love re veal itself and yet John D the oil man who believes firmly in God and that heII doeth all things well has offered 1000 000 to the medical profession if they will find a way to prevent God from making hook worms to torment human beings and he is also trying to interfere with Gods work in malting cancers and medical men are experiment ing with serums that he hopes will kill the germs of consump tion which God in his wisdom designed created and caused to do the work they doing If goodness and wisdom char acterizes Gods work what bus iness has John D to interfere with it1 And why Bro Wade do you not use and protest against such impertinence is no more autocratic domineering and des potic government in all the world In this government there are no kings princes warriors states mon lane makers or police rulers but queens no gangs but petticoat gangs Whjle it is true male docs no general work who can blnmc llm7 since he is kicked out of of kickisociety kicked out of home an never a meal even cooked for him But even this is not the worst When winter comes the vicious females proceed to sting him to death pitch hint out of time back door and do not even give him a decent burial Now gentlemen here is a smar example of female governmenl and plainly reveals just what will be our finish if ever such a ca lamity as female supremacy should befall us for all females are alike furious when they once get in power Socrates said and he knew a few things woman once made the equal of men becomcth at once his superior and no soon er docs she become his superior than she becomes his despotic master We men are in power now only lbutover mind and we have to admit that woman has the superior mind and if she ever advances to supreme power the government of th bee will be surely repeated und there will be nothing left us men to do but to provide ourselves at once with coats of mail and sting remedies precedenceday excepting the right of the a ballot and it would seem with ev erything else in her hands she ought to be satisfied While not sharing the privilege alwayshashas to do is dress in black and palelooking alwaysbosonher every time For when a womans in the case all other things you know give place And lookat the importance Woman is given in the press of the world Compare the newspaper notices given the marriage of Mice Roosevelt with that ofIher brother Why for eighteen months beIfore Alices marriage and for sixI months after the papers fully on the average a million dollars daily gossiping about it mid besides they called her Princess Alice Now observe the scant notice given tho marriage of her brother will you And do you find any of tho papers calling him Prince Theodore it seems to me that a woman is foolish to want to vote when she knows very well that when she becomes the equal of man and hasa grown common place she will get no greater press notice of her marriage than a man will got and when that happens it will just kill herJust stop a moment ladies and think of all the glory the ballot is gong to deprive you of And just look at the ditlereucc in the cost of getting married All a man has to do is to buy a new suit of clothes two suits of under wear three extra pair of socks a pair of silk suspenders then get a shave shampoo and hair cut and he is ready But look at the stuff a girl thinks she must buy when she gets married Why I cant think of or even name onethird of it Now if woman wasnt superior to man why should she have to have fifteen or twenty times as much clothing Yes woman has the best of ev erything except tho privilege of the ballot but we men may as well give up and let her become the whole push For whether we gracefully yield or not she is going to have her willand theres the end of it a Evidence of this is on every hand The experience of a late census however and to bo serious I believe in woman haying the franchisenot because I think it will better conditions right away but because I believe it is her right and she is itL the franchise is not freedom it is only ono of themeans one of the expressions of frcedonu and only as it is in telligently and patriotically ap plied is it a source of good or evil of safety or danger imtnndIbig vote and crush out at once every evil that afflicts society Let me tell you ladies there never was an evil in the world crushed out prayed out or voted out Evils can only be modified and that by the slow process of evolution Progression is the law of nature only to a certain point and then retrogression Allevils are here to stray And as to your freedom you will be disappointed Man has voting in this republic ever its foundation still millions of men today arc neither politi economicallyfree papers in this country that are free enough to print even the truth But few men have the courage of their convictions and dare to speak the truth So after all you perceive that the franchise is no sure guarantee of free dom Too often it is nothing butI joke too often but the safe guard of greed graft and crimi nality Upon the whole I believe that woman is more conscientious titan unsay but after she has once gotten deep into the swim of poli tics I am not sure that she too will not prove incorruptible Of this much ever I am sure for a long long time she will be governed more by prejudices and emotion than by reason and her vote may often complicate things seriouslyI believe in the indiscriminate ballot for women Neither do I believe in the same for mien If I desire to practice medicine I must spend a lot of time and money in qualifying myself for the same before I am permitted to take human life in my hands The life of this nation is in hands of the voter Even thoI should his vote depend upon ification before he is permitted talc this common life belonging to all in his hands The ballot should be free therefore to all regardless of race or sex but based upon time educational test otherwise ignorance superstition religion or inexperience may preponderate t some critical period and sometime that who would be free himself must strike the blow You ought- to learn sometime that you cant in reality be free women until you become free thinkers If then you would indeed be free cut the cords which bind and enslave you to the past cut out superstition and spookery and a big part of your prejudices and emotions and be broadminded liberal individuals If you would vote like men think determined to be mental slaves you may as well remain as you are You women are accountable today for the greater part of the slavery degradation and evil of the world inasmuch as you allow yourselves to be made the tools of the clergy for the perpetuation of a superstition which is the natural enemy of all science free thought argument and reason which in any manner tends to expose to the light the falsehoods impositions and chicanery which it has maintained for centuries and upon which it bases its power Of all crimes and evils that insinuating one of superstition is greatest and most farreaching in blight and you women allow yourselves to be its chief reposi tory and means of spreading the contagion It is through you it gets the child then the man then voteIbe qual show no to make the creeds you believe Understand me I am not refer ring particularly to all women present most of whom are even more broad minded than most of men but rather to womankind in general Not votes but vision is what woman generally is mostly in need of right nowthe vision to see that there is no lib erty independent of freespeech and freethought in all other things as well as in law and gov ernmentWhy you demand a vote instate affairs involving vast and complex commercial and financial interests when you do not even demand a vote in churchaffairs Before you attempt to step high er why not first prove your indi viduality in this concern to which you so closely attach yourselves Let me tell you ladies and it is only the few who would speak as freely frankly and honestly as I with the view uppermost for your own good your great drawback in this matter of granting the franchise to you isyourselves Statesmen und thinking men generally fear that your vote would result in a great religious clash in this country You Protestant women wouldnt vote and every Catholic woman would and soon we would be in the grip of Home How to get along with religion how to live at peace with it has always been the greatest problem every governmnt of mankind has ever had to contendwith Men finally have learned that by keeping the sects so nearly equal ly divided that they fear each other is a nations greatest guarantee of peace For this reason many hesitate in granting univer sal franchise to women fearing the preponderence of the vote will either destroy the equilibrium of government or lead to unseemly and bitter religious strife involv ing especially our schools and up heaving society generally You leaders in the movement arc doing a great and grand work but you have much to consider that you are not considering I repeat if you would be free women you must first be free thinkers You should get up new declaration of independence declaring the freedom of your own brains Why should you de maud time right to vote when you persist in enslaving the mind of your own child thereby forever disqualifying it for the perform ance of its free and natural func tionsIf women were just as careful and persistent in inculcating into the minds of their children science modern thought and incorruptible citizenship as they are in stuffing them with the myths and superstitions of two thousand years ageand the veneration of saints then indeed they might come consistently demanding the franchise But as long as women are far more interested or often wholly interested in slaking Catholics Protestants or Jews of their children than they are in making them citizens thinkers and men I do not see that the present managed government could be iuiproved upon in the least by the addi tion of the female vote First be open to conviction and hospitable to all new and pro gressive thought for herein lies the key to all progress and lib erty and when you once take this stand you will find liberal and progressive men espousing your cause everywhere You can do nothing without the help of thinking men and in order to get their kelp you must come up to the thinking mans standard Heretofore men in general and the clergy in particular have con demned women for incapacity without ever giving her a trial This is wrong unfair mind unjust It should be the business of every man especially that of our statesmen to know that free mothers make free omen that every advantage should be extend ed for womans development not only for woimms good but for the best development of man him self since he must pass through her being to be at all that man cannot add to his strength and power by prohibiting restraining and robbing thes ounce of his be ing of the best elements of individual liberty and intellectual strength that the weak passive negative and inexperienced brain of woman is not the best soil for the productio ofIL mighty race of men In the end women will be given the franchise My advice is Qual ify the majority for it before you ask it Be patient be slow be sure It remains to be seen if as a class you can stand the test I am optimistic and believe the law of evolution applies to woman as to man and in end all will prove good and well A Scotch parson hind been courting a lass for several years Finally he concluded he had just about readied the
