little cascade ten or twenty feet high fell into the blue water with a rainbow hanging over it nnd in another we saw the remains of a rude log house built out of boat planks To this spot we steered and landed on a point of grey sand up which wo two men pulled the boat high nnd dry above the tide There The first we disembarked our young lady thing to do was to visit the log house The door had fallen from its rude hinges which had been of leather there had been n rough kind of window shutter which now lay on the ground and the roof which could never have been weather tight was built up with planks of which half n dozen had been blown off We looked inside Dressed in On tho floor lay a skeleton rough sailors clothes tho hands in gloves Hu lay the feet in great boots a skeleton with his before that a system of embezzlement by wny of forgery had been in The sigunturo practice for some mouths of tho firm had been forged by some one who knew how to imitfttc the handwriting of Mr Baldwin A sum in all amounting to upward of nine hundred pounds had been thus fraudulently obtained To stop the forger Mr Baldwin had been asked by tho bank to add a private mark to On this morning ho placed In his name my hnnds ho said an envelope containing n check for twelvo pounds with his signature having tho private mark and he had asked me to cash that check at the bank He swore positively that he had drawn that check and no other tho dny before the counter foil proved that yet the check I presented was for eighty pounds and it had not tho privnto mark Observe now how the evidence grew more I hnd ono check nnd mora circumstantial given me I presented another Doubtless I must havo torn up the first on tho wny I came Then an important circumstance back from executing my commission but did not ensh the check I got as far as the door of the office I was seen to look in and Mr Baldwin was in the retreat hurriedly clerks room with one of the partners of the bank I walked fast or rather ran to tho bank I presented the check for eighty pounds in n quick nnxious wny and asked for tho whole nmount in gold Nnturnlly it wns assumed that I was going to noscond with the proceeds of my Inst forgery In fact no question nt nil wns rnised ns to my guilt that was concluded from tho very be-¬ ginning The Lord Mayor refused ball nnd I was sent nt once to the prison which I only left in order to be tried and convicted That was tho story I told it again nnd again while tho wood fire crackled on the Miss Elwood asked mo for every hearth detail she talked tho matter over nnd look ed nt it in nil its lights butshonlwnyscame back to one point Mr Baldwin gave you n check which ho had drawn the dny before How could ho swear that the envelope had no been chang ed by some one else And there was another point It asstim ed though the charge was not pressed that I hud been the forger in the preceding frauds Now no clerk could swear that I had presented any other of the forged checks Also it was proved in tho defense that my life was quite quiet innocent nnd Every hour of my dny was laid simple No motivo was dis open for tho jury no secret covered for the circumstance source of extravagance wns ascertained nnd it wns found that tho frauds had been committed by means of n check book got Heaven knows where not that in the pos No attempt wns session of Mr Baldwin made to find out how I could hnve obtained another check book But these were trifles light ns nir in comparison with the weight of tho circumstances against me Always Miss Elwood enmc back to tho samo point Who could have we wcro in darkness Hen insisted that I should sleep while he kept tho first watch and after prayer by Miss Helen I colled up in the bottom of tho boat nnd was soon in a sound sleep It was far advanced in tho night when I He had stripped him nwoko to relieve Hen self of his coat and laid it over tho shoul ¬ ders of the sleeping girl and was sitting in Ms shirt sleeves Steady Keep her head so said Hon I let him sleep till tho day was high When tho first cold brosze ol tho morning touched our ladys face sho opened her ycs and presently sat up bcsldo mo and wo talked That is to say sho talked Sho told tin nbout herself how her mother was dend in England and her father had taken her out to Australia five or six years ago Ho was a barrister by profession but ho had no prnc lice and a thero stood all by itself a rock about forty or fifty feet high around which hovered and flew perpetually myriads of birds I found a way to the top of this rook nnd planted there our signal of distress a long white streamer fluttering from tho mast of tho boat whlcb wo managed to stick pret ty irmly Into a cleft of tho rock This rigged up we settled down to our new life Tho manner of it was as follows We began with morning prayers said by Then in Then breakfast our chnptaln fine weather Ben and I went fishing in Miss Elwood ¬ ¬ ¬ the baynot far from land you may bo sure because Helen begged us with tears in her eyes not to risk being carried out to sea and lenving her alono upon the Island When we had luck wo would bring home enough fish for dinner and breakfast too On such dnys we were sparing with our Then for dinner besides the fish stores we hnd sea birds eggs strong in taste but not unwholesome boiled or fried nnd sometimes to vary the diet wo knocked down the birds nil three together around the firo of logs nnd talk till Hen gave tho word to turn in Then evening prayers and sleep till dawn Sitting before tho fire in those long even ings of winter when wo did not enro to waste our littlo stock of candles it was natural that we should get to know each other and it stood to reason that I should should be asked to tell my story over nnd over again At first I could sea that old Ben distrusted me A convict he thought must needs to bo a thief Elso how should he be n convict Tho story of innocence wns for a long time too much for him and it wns a joyful Show mo the man as says you could I I went through it from the beginning picking up a thread here and n forgotten Miss Elwood listening wns detail there putting it together until she knew ns much as I knew myself And my story enme to this I tell it hero because it was told so often during our stay on tho island On Friday morning August 18 181G I went ns usual to the office in Lower Thnmcs street being then n clerk in the firm of Battcrick nnd Baldwin of five years standing getting on for years of ngc in the receipt ol n salary handsome for my ace and standing of a hundred nnd twenty pounds a year I lived just south of the Borough between tho church and Kennington Common having my little Huth was sister Ruth with mo in lodgings at school all day but had ten ready for mo when I reached home form in which I was to set them forth was n precise gentleman nnd liked to havo things put in language ns definite as possible When I quto understood what I was to any and how I wns to say it I asked him if there wns any thing else I could do for him Ho looked around nnd taking an envelope which lay at his elbow half opened and handed it to me You may cash that littlo check for me Warneford if you will be so kind hosnid I will tnke it In gold I took tho onvelopo without looking nt the contents nnd went away After executing my first commission nnd receiving a satisfactory answer I returned to the office and my foot was on tho threshold when I suddenly remembered the check It was lucky I thought becauso Mr Bald win was in tho clerks office and with him a gentleman who I remembered afterward was one of the partners in the firm of SylCo our bankers vester Caylcy I ran to tho bank as fast as I could throw the envclopo ncross the counter nnd said Gold please as I pulled out my handkerchief nnd wiped my forehead for the day was hot Tho clerk opened the check looked nt mo with surprise for a moment nnd then left the counter whilo ho wont first to tho door and said something to the porter nnd then walked into tho inner room Ho camo back to me after two or threo minutes nnd said You must go inside pleaso go quietly Its all up at last Now I declaro that I knew no more what ho meant than a child but I supposed there was some message for Mr Baldwin and I went into tho inner room filled with clerks where the real business of the bank was Every body looked at mo oddtransacted ly as I walked to tho end at which tho partners and mnnagers wero to bo found Ono of thorn seemed to be waiting for me he pointed to n chair ho said and wait Sit down The tono of his voice was not encouraging
