lecturers on the platform the eloquent Bob Taylor renowned the country over for having defeated his brother a Republican for governor of Tennereee and for having that distinction of being the only governor who is a fiddler of national distinction The Paradise of Fools is considered the equal if not better than The Fiddle and the Bow the lecture that first made Governor Taylor famous on the lecture platform Atlanta is notably a city that ii death on lecturers but when it has ever been announced that Governor Taylor would occupy the platform in this city there has been a crowded house The governor was born among the mountains of Tennessee and he im bued the gift of eloquence and wit when growing upon his fathers plantation Governor Taylor began his lecture by exclaiming that man is a fool Every rich blessing within the sight of the Almighty Father was poured from the cornucopia of heaven into the lap of paradise But it was a paradise of fool because they stained it with disobe-¬ dience and polluted it with sin It was a paradise of fools because in the exer ¬ cise of their own god given free agency they tasted the forbidden fruit and fell from their glorious estate Oh what a fall was there It was the fall of inno- ¬ cence and purity it was the falling of happiness into the abyss of woe it was the fall of life into the arms of death The lecturer pictured the paradise of babyhood of boyhood of youth of man ¬ hood and of home in words now eloquent and pathetic now witty and sarcastic The house roared and cheered when the lecturer touched the people with his wit and pathos Of the paradise of home he said How rich would be the feast of hap ¬ piness in this beautiful world of ours could folly end with youth but youth is only the first act in the Comedy of Errors Whether it be the child at its mothers knee or a man of mature jreara whether it be the banker or the beggar the prince in his palace or the peasant in his hut there is in every heart the dream of a in a great theater at the national capital It was thronged with youth I and beauty and old age and wisdom saw a man the image of his God stand upon the stage and speak His gestures were the perfection of grace his voice was music and his language was more beautiful than I have ever heard from mortal lips He pointed picture after picture of the pleasures the joys and the sympathies of home He enthroned love and preached the gospel of human ¬ ity like ho angel Then I saw him dip a brush in ink and blot out the beautiful picture he had painted I saw him stab love dead at his feet I saw him conducted in any such mode Each justice is furnished with a printed copy of the record and with a copy of each brief tilt d and each one ex ¬ amines the records and briefs at his chambers before the case is taken up for consideration The cases are thoroughly discussed in conference the discussion in some being necessarily more extended than in others Ttie discussion being concluded and it is never concluded until each member of the court has said all that he desires to say the roll is called and each justice prtsent and participat ¬ ing in the decision votes to affirm re- ¬ verse or modify as his examination and reflection suggests The chief justice after the conference and without con sulting his brethren distributes the cases so decided lor opinions No justice knows at the time he votes in a particular case that he will be asked to become the organ of the court in that case nor does any member of the court ask that a particular case be assigned to him The next step is the preparation of the opinion by the justice to horn it has been assigned The opinion when pre- ¬ pared is privately printed and a copy placed in the hands of each member of the court for examination and criticism It is examined by each justice nnd re ¬ turned to the author with such criticisms and objections as are deemed necessary If these objections are of a serious kind auecting the genera trend of the opinion the writer calls the attention of the jus- ¬ tice to them that they may be passed upon The author adopts such sugges¬ tions of mere form as meets his views If objections are made to
