the inhabitants of the Island All hands being employed In useful labor a reasonable drgree of cointort and happness But at length two of the men Stephen and John shrewder and more cunning than the Dlngley Bill which they hoped would commend itself to the Democrats and the President as being simply an amendment to the Wilson Mil and strictly on its lines to provide for such an increase of revenue as would savo the country from further increaso of debt and more bonds They made it strictly an emergency measuro and limit-Â¬ ed its oporation to two years one of which is now gone The bill Â¬ ces in plunging the country deeper into debt without in tho least aiding their main hobby Opposition has been expressed to the Diugley Bill on the ground that it recognizes and attempts to amend an inher Â¬ ently vicious measure Fear is express ed that if it is adopted it will prevent tho passage of a wisely matured equita ble Tariff such as the country demands shall supersede the Wilson Iniquity These objections are not well taken The Dlngley Bill Is expressly limited in its operations to a year from now which will give time to prepare another bill As to the recognition of the Wilson monstrosity that is mere quibbling We have the Wilson Tariff and must endure it until anothei is substituted Until then let us minlmlzs its hurtfulness as far as possible There is no telling when we can get another bill It took two years to pass tho McKinley Bill It will be three months beforo 1resldent McKinley is inaugurated If ho should call an extra session at once the bill could not possibly
